Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH October 15, 2017 Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke commemorated on October 18t In Saint Luke s Gospel, the message of the salvation made possible by the Lord Jesus Christ, and the preaching of the Gospel, are of primary importance. The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, was a native of Syrian Antioch, a companion of the holy Apostle Paul (Phil.1:24, 2 Tim. 4:10-11), and a physician enlightened in the Greek medical arts. Hearing about Christ, Luke arrived in Palestine and fervently accepted the preaching of salvation from the Lord Himself. As one of the Seventy Apostles, Saint Luke was sent by the Lord with the others to preach the Kingdom of Heaven during the Savior s earthly life (Luke 10:1-3). After the Resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to Saints Luke and Cleopas on the road to Emmaus. Luke accompanied Saint Paul on his second missionary journey, and from that time they were inseparable. When Paul s coworkers had forsaken him, only Luke remained to assist him in his ministry (2 Tim. 4:10-11). After the martyric death of the First-Ranked Apostles Peter and Paul, Saint Luke left Rome to preach in Achaia, Libya, Egypt and the Thebaid. He ended his life by suffering martyrdom in the city of Thebes. Tradition credits Saint Luke with painting the first icons of the Mother of God. Let the grace of Him Who was born of Me and My mercy be with these Icons, said the All-Pure Virgin after seeing the icons. Saint Luke also painted icons of the First-Ranked Apostles Peter and Paul. Saint Luke s Gospel was written in the years at Rome, under the guidance of the Apostle Paul. In the preliminary verses (1:1-3), Saint Luke precisely sets forth the purpose of his work. He proposes to record, in chronological order, everything known by Christians about Jesus Christ and His teachings. By doing this, he provided a firmer historical basis for Christian teaching (1:4). He carefully investigated the facts, and made generous use of the oral tradition of the Church and of what the All-Pure Virgin Mary Herself had told him (2:19, 51). Saint Luke also wrote the Acts of the Holy Apostles at Rome around A.D. The Book of Acts, which is a continuation of the four Gospels, speaks about the works and the fruits of the holy Apostles after the Ascension of the Savior. At the center of the narrative is the Council of the holy Apostles at Jerusalem in the year 51, a Church event of great significance, which resulted in the separation of Christianity from Judaism and its independent dissemination into the world (Acts 15:6-29). The theological focus of the Book of Acts is the coming of the Holy Spirit, Who will guide the Church into all truth John 16:13) until the Second Coming of Christ. The holy relics of Saint Luke were taken from Constantinople and brought to Padua, Italy at some point in history. Perhaps this was during the infamous Crusade of In 1992, Metropolitan Hieronymus (Jerome) of Thebes requested the Roman Catholic bishop in Thebes to obtain a portion of Saint Luke s relics for the saint s empty sepulchre in the Orthodox cathedral in Thebes. The Roman Catholic bishop Antonio Mattiazzo of Padua, noting that Orthodox pilgrims came to Padua to venerate the relics while many Catholics did not even know that the relics were there, appointed a committee to investigate the relics in Padua, and the skull of Saint Luke in the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Vico in Prague. The skeleton was determined to be that of an elderly man of strong build. In 2001, a tooth found in the coffin was judged to be consistent with the DNA of Syrians living near the area of Antioch dating from A.D. The skull in Prague perfectly fit the neck bone of the skelton. The tooth found in the coffin in Padua was also found to fit the jawbone of the skull. Bishop Mattiazzo sent a rib from the relics to Metropolitan Hieronymus to be venerated in Saint Luke s original tomb in the Orthodox cathedral at Thebes. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." 13 Fellowship for College Students Abounds Jesus tells us the only way to heaven is His way- one of holiness, of repentance, forgiveness and love. How are we to engage this journey towards Him? How are we to be humble and focus our mindset toward this destiny? Do we have the tools to do this? Can we really, in our day-to-day, 21st century American lives, really make it? Jacob is the Pastoral Assistant at Assumption Church in Scottsdale, AZ. He has worked extensively in the field of OCF, the Orthodox Christian Fellowship Campus Ministry, has announced their national events for the academic year. Kicking off with College Student Sunday on Oct. 1st, undergraduate students at any U.S. college or university are invited to download the OCF Connect app to access all Orthodox campus ministry resources, locate a chapter near them, and follow OCF on social media, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (#GLORYTOGOD ocfministry) Information is also available on the 2017 College Conferences taking place Dec at either Antiochian Village in Pennsylvania (CC East,) St. Iakovos Retreat Center in Wisconsin (CC Midwest) or St. Nicholas Ranch in California (CC West.) 15 Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Ladies of the Philoptochos Chapter 6007 Dear Ladies and Community of the Annunciation, We would like to welcome all of the new members. It is great to see such enthusiasm for our wonderful ministry. We held our elections on September 24th and the new board officers will be announced soon. On Sunday, October 15th, after the coffee hour, our General Members Meeting will take place. We passed a tray in Church for the natural disaster in Houston and we sent $1000. Thank you for your generosity. Last weekend. I attended the Metropolis Clergy-Laity Meeting in Columbus. The new Metropolis President is our own Crystal Thomas, from St. Demetrios and Barbara Pasialis is the Treasurer. This is my third year on the Metropolis Philoptochos Board and I am now Ohio liason for elections and other compliance issues. I am proud to announce that we again received the Metropolis Award of Excellence for 100% participation. Also, on November 11, the 2017 National Philoptochos Children's Medical Fund Luncheon will be held in New Jersey. Our Chapter has donated $2500 in memory of Pauline Diamond, a longtime member & officer of our Chapter. I also want to remind the entire community that our Patron Saints will be commemorated on their Nameday with a Liturgy on November 1st. we will serve the poor at St. Herman's.
