3 Koiné Greek Page 3 First Corinthians 13:1-13 Lesson Notes The concepts of translation that we use are annotated in the Grammar Reference. At first we will refer to these notes often, but as they become repetitive we will assume the student already knows them. Simply put, if you understand what has been done in my notes, you can ignore the notes, but if you don t understand refer to them. For each of the verses in this lesson, try to translate it on your own. Compare your results with several good English versions. f you are in agreement, go to the next verse. f you are not in substantial agreement, use your notes and my notes on the verse to determine what you did that made your translation different. Learn from it and then translate the next verse. include complete {Grammar Reference Notes} for the first verse of each lesson or passage. After that, only include them only when the situation is a little outside the norm. The notes are in numerical order in the Annotated Grammar Reference. Textual Alternatives are put in [brackets] or (parenthesis) within the initial Greek text. f there are alternatives they are separated by OR.

KJV And though have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though have all faith, so that could remove mountains, and have not charity, am nothing. (t is a contraction of καὶ ἐὰν) ψωμίσω if fed with morsels Verb of the clause, no equivalent English verb so with morsels has been added in the lexicon. πάντα all An accusative adjective probably modifying the following participle in the same case τὰ ὑπάρχοντα the things owned μου my And if Feed with morsels All my possessions And if gradually fed everything own am having trouble making sense of this verb. m going to need help from the experts. Maybe gradually consume?

9 Koiné Greek Page 9 καὶ and ntroductory conjunction in the vocative slot ἐὰν if Another conjunction for the vocative slot παραδῶ if delivered Verb of the clause in the subjunctive aoist τὸ σῶμα body Direct object μου my Modifies body And if delivered My body and if delivered my body ἵνα so that ntroductory conjunction in the vocative slot (καυχήσωμαι, f myself boasted Verb of the clause subjunctive middle OR Short clause so don t need two rendering charts to decide between the variatioins καυ ήσωμαι) will be burnt Verb of the clause Future passive burnt makes more sense in this context think So that Will be burnt so that will be burnt ἀγάπην love Direct object δὲ but ntroductory conjunction in vocative slot μὴ not Adverb modifying the verb ἔχω, f have Verb of the clause but Do not have love but do not have love οὐδὲν nothing Adjective in the accusative case acting as a substantive ὠφελοῦμαι. have profited Verb of the clause Have profited nothing have profited nothing My Translation: f gradually consume everything own, and if delivered my body so that will be burnt, but do not have love, have profited nothing. Comparison to the Experts: m not sure where the experts got the poor and others but it makes more sense than mine. Darby seems to have the best job of rendering it in a sensible way without adding words. Clearly the verb simply has no English equivalent. KJV And though bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Darby And if shall dole out all my goods in food, and if deliver up my body that may be burned, but have not love, profit nothing. DR And if should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. YLT and if give away to feed others all my goods, and if give up my body that may be burned, and have not love, am profited nothing. NASB And if give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

11 Koiné Greek Page 11 it it is not puffed up. My Translation: Love patiently endures; it is kind; love does not covet; love never brags; it is not puffed up. Comparison to the Experts: We have substantial agreement. There is not enough context to reliably select from the range of sense on the various verbs so there is some variation in terms, but no ambiguity of meaning. like NASB s jealous and arrogant better than my covet and arrogant. KJV Charity suffereth long, [and] is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Darby Love has long patience, is kind; love is not emulous of others; love is not insolent and rash, is not puffed up, DR Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; YLT The love is long-suffering, it is kind, the love doth not envy, the love doth not vaunt itself, is not puffed up, NASB Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,

13 Koiné Greek Page 13 My Translation: Love does not behave rudely, does not desire for itself, is not easily provoked and is not accounted as evil. ( added love from the context since clearly it in the four clauses was referring back to the previous verse.) Comparison to the Experts: We have substantial agreement except on the last clause. Clearly, did not give the middle voice of the verb proper consideration. So, changed it to, Love does not behave rudely, does not desire for itself, is not easily provoked and does not keep track of evil. KJV Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Darby does not behave in an unseemly manner, does not seek what is its own, is not quickly provoked, does not impute evil, DR s not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; YLT doth not act unseemly, doth not seek its own things, is not provoked, doth not impute evil, NASB does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

My Translation: Does not rejoice over evil, but rejoices with the truth. (still talking about love) Comparison to the Experts: We have substantial agreement. Comparison to the Experts: They all used bears instead of forgives in the first clause. So suppose m wrong about that. They all used all things instead of just all but don t see any difference in meaning. They used no preposition in the third clause but don t know what hopes all things means. KJV Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Darby bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. YLT all things it beareth, all it believeth, all it hopeth, all it endureth. NASB bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. all

KJV Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away. Darby Love never fails; but whether prophecies, they shall be done away; or tongues, they shall cease; or knowledge, it shall be done away. Comparison to the Experts: They used in part instead of my partly. can find nothing in the lexicons to allow translating as in so m guessing the experts were doing the same thing was in a different way. (i.e. trying to find an English counterpart to replace a literal translation that was meaningless.) Having looked them all over find like Young s Literal translation the best for this verse.
