Dear Readers Another academic year has come to an end. Pascal Insight once again captures the very essence of our school. A lot of hard work, excellent academic achievements and participation in competitions, sports, events, trips and clubs are here contained for your enjoyment. We are proud of all the aforementioned and this publication is testimony to all the hard work that has been carried out during the academic year We are proud of the fundraisers and community service that was carried out in an effort to assist our local community in such difficult economic times, we are also proud of the volunteer work carried out for the Pancyprian Special Olympics by our pupils. In addition, we are proud of the university placements of our graduating class and the care and individual attention given to our pupils in making their dreams come true. Most importantly however, we are proud of the young adults that our pupils have become and are becoming. We dare to lead and we are certain that we will all continue to work together thus ensuring success. Through ambitious interaction with each other we have proven that we influence and touch one another s lives positively and the seeds that we have planted are making a difference in this world. Despina Lioliou Headmistress This year Pascal Insight focuses on courage and perseverance. Starting with the cover and continuing with Rudyard Kipling s poem If we invite you to reflect on the idea of taking heart in spite of any hindrance, both physical and emotional. Indeed, our school s philosophy is comparable - We dare to lead is our school s motto. As pupils - and teachers we need the courage to dare and the perseverance to show the way. As you read Insight, you will be heartened to see our school s ethos permeating through its pages. Furthermore, hope must never be lost. As Kipling said: Yours is the Earth and everything in it Editors: Angela Apostolou, Irene Petrou "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill

Teachers in Charge: Ms. Christina Karaviotou, Teachers in Charge: Ms. Angela Apostolou Ms. Irene Petrou, Ms. Maria Anastasiou, Ms. Elina Zervou, Ms. Christianne Camacho Aims: Aims: Our club was very successful this year. We achieved our aims which were to enjoy the grace and beauty of this equestrian sport while, at the same time, discovering a new healthy hobby. We did this by learning or remembering - how to ride a horse, care for and groom it, as well as saddling this beautiful animal. This all took place in a wonderful natural environment with competent, experienced staff. Our year ended with a gymkhana see the photos. Everyone knows that jewellery and diamonds are a girl s best friends!!! That is why our club ran for a third year, this year, with great success. The aim of the club was to show the students simple, clever and cheap ways to make their own jewellery by using different techniques, tools and material. Students who joined the club gained, not only knowledge on how to create trendy, cheap and beautiful jewellery for themselves or friends, but also enjoyed every minute of it. On our first meeting we visited two bead shops here in Larnaca where students saw the different materials, beads and tools used for jewellery making. In the meetings that followed, they made fashionable necklaces, beautiful bracelets, trendy earrings, bookmarks, mobile accessories and dazzled their friends with them.

Teacher in Charge: Ms. Maria C. Zingi Aims: We had an exciting time with our club this year. Everyone obtained a better knowledge of automotive technology. Students coordination of movements, ability and fast thinking improved while enjoying a fun experience. Also, they were able to make quick decisions and have more initiative. Teachers in Charge: Ms. Lena Mahdessian and Ms. Denise Evgeniou Aims: This year, the Mosaics Club students worked on various projects where they decorated artifacts like mirrors, photo frames, tissue boxes and coasters to create some lovely work for their personal use. The first club day involved students visiting Helen s Art Studio where they were shown how to cut tiles with the special cutters, how to glue and create designs on wood. The following club days were spent working on projects, grouting and shining the finished products.

Teacher in Charge: Mr.. Andreas Demetri Aims: Ours is one of the most exciting clubs. The pupils that took part in this club visited several paintball places and the laser battle field. Paintball is an extreme sport in which players compete in teams to eliminate opponents by tagging them with capsules containing water soluble dye inside a gelatin shell (referred to as paintballs) propelled from a device called a paintball gun. The key to a fun game of paintball is to have everyone aiming at the same target. It only takes a few minutes, but quickly going through the safety rules each time will help maximize your paintball experience: *Wear masks and all the necessary equipment at all times. *No blind firing *Allow surrenders. *Teamwork, observation and use of common sense help to succeed at shooting each target. Teacher in Charge: Ms. Constantina Riala-White Aims: The aim of our club was to introduce our students to the art of Photography and basic image manipulation via the use of Photoshop. The students got a chance to practice outdoor photographic techniques during our two outings to Larnaca Salt Lake and Makenzi beach. The rest of the time was spent learning Photoshop and using it to manipulate the students original images and images found on the web. The results were stunning, so we had them professionally printed and displayed on the school premises. We give thanks to Kelima stores Larnaca who printed the students work for free.

Teachers in Charge: Mr. Gregoris Demetriou, Ms. Despina Kaitani, Ms. Maria Evangelidou, Mr. Demos Kaoullas Aims: Now in its third year running, the 6 th Former s Club continues to provide its exclusive members with a rewarding package, comprised of adventure, daring feats of action and hearty good old fashioned fun. We literally jump started the year with the legendary leaping of students off the marked cliff at Cape Greco into the deep blue waters below. As summer slipped away we welcomed autumn on the Go Karts track, where our L plate graduates put pedal to metal, scraping round corners and charging ahead to achieve unbeatable lap times. Our third club day was spent on the paintballing battle fields of Alethrico where teachers and students fought for revenge over bitter classroom disputes gone by. Much paint was spilled. With winter in full swing we pushed ourselves to the limit, visiting a famous rock face in the Paphos region to abseil in snowy icy winds. Needless to say, we treated ourselves to tea and hot chocolate waving hands frantically at a lit fire place straight afterwards! With the sun s return we headed for the beach once again, this time KOT in Larnaca. Our aim here was simply to have fun and relieve the pressure that comes with being in the final year. We played beach volley, football and even went for a refreshing dip. We would like to take this opportunity to thank this years group for truly making all seven club days a fantastic experience. Teacher in Charge: Mr. Elias Kamaratos Aims: Over the course of the school year 13 Pascal (Lca) students weathered cold waters and rough seas to successfully complete their SCUBA diving course with Alpha Divers Diving School. Twelve got their PADI SCUBA Diver certificate while two more as well as Mr. Kamaratos achieved their Advanced Open Water Certificate. During the last club days and with excellent weather conditions they dived in the bay of Larnaca with the Advanced group achieving 30m on the wreck of the Zenobia. All divers learned what they need to know about diving safely and having fun doing so. Hopefully next year they will have more fun diving with the SCUBA club and move up to the next certificate.

Teacher in Charge: Mr. Marios Thoma Aims: During the club days, students developed the skills, knowledge and judgment required to supervise and rescue patrons in an aquatic environment. Students underwent the relevant training to become qualified lifesavers, learning a wide range of water safety, swimming, lifesaving and resuscitation skills. These are essential skills which will enable them deal with accidents that may occur either to themselves or others. We were using a pool for our training and we were assisted by a life saving instructor. Both theoretic and practical lessons in life-saving and first aid were given. Students who successfully complete the course will be able to take a life saving certificate, and further more will be able to continue to further stages of life saving certification. The certificate can be added to students CV s and can lead to future employment in life saving at pools and municipal beaches. Teachers in Charge: Ms. Maria Kimitri, Ms. Eleni Malla Aims: The Young Volunteers club is a new club introduced this year to our school, with the main aim of serving and learning. Throughout this academic year we will try to promote to our pupils that there is no age restriction to volunteering! We can all volunteer our skills at every stage of our life! The existence of this club in our school this year, attempted to develop a number of events (raising money in most cases) and helped to expand on students understanding of the term volunteer so that it becomes more acceptable to young people. UNICEF, the world s leading children s charity, was also represented on one club. Poverty, violence, disease and discrimination are the greatest obstacles in a child s path. Our role may be rather insignificant, but the emotional reward of supporting and assisting towards building a world where every child s rights are realized, was incomparable.

2012 Pascal English School Writing Competition- Lower School Winner Home At Last Tom s point of view Man down! screamed the major, Tom dived into the bunker, inspecting the injured man. Bullets sprayed above his head, as he poured antiseptic over the man s wound. He took a pair of tweezers out of his medical satchel and slowly retrieved the bullet from the shallow wound of the soldier s upper arm. You re going to be ok James, he shouted over the sound of gunshots and Afghan aeroplanes. James point of view James lay in the bunker, his arm was throbbing in pain as medic Tom Jones dressed and bandaged his bullet wound. I m alright! James explained, sitting up. His name was Sergeant. James Zokora, and he was an African-English 32 year old who d been fighting for England against Afghanistan since he was 29, in He was a superior in his field, but many of the lower ranks resented his position because of his skin colour. He retrieved his gun from the ground, a semi-automatic Barett Sniper Rifle. He gathered a handful of men. Ok, he announced, this is what we re gonna do, we re going to head into the forest, wipe out any Afghans that might be lurking in there, then go round and destroy their camp. He grabbed 6 bags of C4 and strapped them to his back, Let s go. They headed into the forest. He ignored the agonizing pain as he pulled himself out of the bunker. They quickly ran into the forest on their left. It was very hot in Afganistan and his men were growing tired and dizzy. They came across a few Afghan stragglers that were either injured or were making a run for it. They shot them all. They did lose a few men of their own, the guards that were circling the camp noticed and shot many of them dead. James only had three men left, but they managed to finish

Kill off the Afghans around the camp. They then climbed the walls and got inside. The soldiers stealthily moved around the camp, evading most guards and silently dealing with others. They reached the base, a large round building with great double doors. They snuck behind it and planted the C4 on the back of the outer wall. They began retreating out of the camp and were about to scale the wall again, when they heard yelling behind them. James was struck on the temple with a hand gun and his companions were disarmed and shot in the head. He woke up two hours later with a splitting headache and bump like an orange on the side of his temple. James squinted in the dim light and realised there were iron bars in front of him, he was a prisoner of war! Just like his father had been back in World War II. Rats scuttled in the corner of the cell, cowering away from him. He turned and looked out of the barred window, he was still in the camp, must be under the building he tried to blow up. A pang of sadness struck him at the death of his companions, but all thought faded as a wave of tiredness engulfed him and he fell into a deep sleep. Time passed, he didn t know how long he d been there, but his senses had sharpened. He could hear the rough chatter of the guards outside, and the pitter-patter of rat s feet. James thought of his wife Nadia, and his son Charlie. He wondered if he d ever see them again when suddenly there was yelling outside and chaos erupted. He heard close explosions. He stood up, leaning away from the window. Abruptly, the wall on the left side of the cell exploded and James was thrown into the bars at the right of the room. Light shone into the room. He stood up, unscathed, and saw his chance. He ran to the gaping hole in the wall and pulled himself up and out of the cell. He ran frantically. Part of the wall surrounding the camp was blown to rubble and James sprinted out. He thanked the Lord and the British Bomber planes and sprinted into the forest. James sat in an aeroplane three days later. The General accepted his resignation from the British army and sent him off on the next plane to England. The flight was eight hours long and he was exhausted when he arrived at Heathrow airport, but infinitely relieved at being back in England. He took a taxi back to his house in Southgate, London. He paid the driver then ran to the door of his home. He knocked three times, then his wife opened the

door, and her eyes widened at the sight of him. She threw her arms around him, James! You re back! Charlie! Come and see who s here! Charlie ran to the door. Dad, he screamed in joy as he hugged his father. James walked through the door and sighed. 42 Writing Competition Runner up Upper School The Sound of Silence It s quiet now. Silence is never complete, but this is as close as it can get. The wind blows mournfully quiet through cracked windows in towering monoliths, crippled by cracks and rot. Once these buildings were hubs of life, a cacophony of talk and laughter, held up by business and money. Money and business have long since stopped working, so now the buildings lie dormant, nearing their eventual demise as they fail to support their weight, crushing all beneath them, perhaps knocking more of the great buildings down, like the gods, or whatever is out there,, decided to play a twisted game of dominoes, with them. I wander between these decaying monarchs of a dead world. The silence is oppressive, the only audible sound is the muffled clapping of my feet as I walk, and if you make a sound, you feel out of place, as you never make enough noise to break the silence, just enough to remind you of it. I m drawn back to my usual line of thought. I was young, but old enough to remember how it was, loud, boisterous and oh, so enjoyable. I don t know what happened to make everyone leave, maybe they died, maybe they left, maybe they left because of something I did. I don t know. As I walk among the ruins, I spot a building, larger than the smallest, but still pretty small. This is usually what I look for in among all this dead city. It had glass doors that opened on their own, I remember. They don t work now, and are covered in grime. I wipe some off, and peer inside. Faded packets of once bright colour catch my eye, there is still food here. I raise my foot, and smash open the glass doors. Some things from the old world I still know how to do, I can read and write, ever since I was taught by a happy-faced, plump lady in school a long time ago. Ever since then I carried a pencil, or charcoal with me, and a small little notepad, so I remember to write every now and then, so I don t forget how. Next to the food is a display of pens and

paper, so I help myself to what I need, then go back to the hunt for more food, now with a small filled bag over my shoulder, clanking and rustling pleasantly as I walk away. I hear something. Something new, and all at once beautiful and tragic, I ve never heard before, so curiously I set off to find it, bag in tow. The sound is so strange, it s familiar, but I can t think of what it reminds me of. Whatever it is, it breaks the silence so wonderfully, I don t truly care as I hurry towards it. As I get close to the source of it, it stops and is replaced by footsteps that for once aren t my own. I run after them, determined to find out what is making those nearly perfect sounds. My breath comes in gasps as I catch up to the footsteps, which had run through a myriad of paths around my dead city, until they went around a corner leading to a thin, dead end little alleyway. There was a yelp, and the footsteps stopped, finally I got to have a look at what made the noises! It was just like me! Almost, it was a girl I think, a similar age to me, blue eyes, brown, long hair. It was glaring at me, then it tried to move back. She was scared of me. I motioned for her to stop, fished the notepad and pen out of my bag, and wrote my name and an apology for scaring her. She stared at the notepad confused, she couldn t read? What do you want? She demanded, I have trouble following the words, but they re pleasant to listen to. I try to talk back. H-Hel-Hello, I stammer I m T-Trent, s-sor-sorry for sc-scaring you. She looked at me strangely, I hadn t spoken in a while, I hope she understood. She wasn t glaring at me, but still looked wary. Hello Trent she murmured. I don t know why, but I think the silence, at this moment, was breaking. I m Clara. The silence seemed to crack. I m lost, can you help me? I smiled, and the silence seemed to break

CELEBRATING THE FRENCH DAY AT PASCAL LARNAKA On February 2, our school adopted a French look with: French flags, French songs, and a Paris slide show as well as French specialties (croissants, pains aux chocolats, baguettes ) in the canteen: On that occasion, our guest from the French Institute in Nicosia, Mme Chantal Jauneau (attaché de coopération pour le français de l Institut) visited two of our French classes. She first visited the May 2012 International Baccalaureate class where the students represented famous French characters. They talked about each character s biography and explained their admiration for them. Mme Chantal Jauneau later visited 3Awhere students showed their oral skills through everyday life conversations. The event was a real success and we will repeat the event next year making this French Day a tradition at Pascal Larnaca.

SCIENCE FAIR 2012 This year the Pascal Education Science Fair which has become an annual event was held at the Pascal premises in Lefkosia on the 12th of May Finalists from all Pascal Schools were called upon to explain their projects to a panel of judges who had the hard job of deciding who knew their subject better and showed this effectively through a model and poster. Form 3 students this year, different to what was done in the past, had to prepare a powerpoint presentation and present it to the judges. This meant they had to know their material well, make it attractive in the way that it was presented on screen and to overcome their anxiety of speaking in front of a crowd. From PES (Larnaca), the following groups of students were chosen by the teachers of the Science Department to represent our school in the final: Form 1: Alexei Gorskyi (1A), Georgie Kamaratos (1A), Sotiris Ioannou (1C), Constantinos Kouris/Stefanos Ellinas (1C), Froso Tsangari (1C), Giorgos Challoumas (1B). Form 2: Alan Whittingham (2A), Margarita Georgiadis (2A), Frideriki Soteriou (2A), Thekla Kyriacou (2C), Constantinos Kounnas (2C), Christiana Lagou (2B), Marilena Papachristodoulou (2B), Lazaros Pieri (2C). Form 3: Nayia Panayi (3D), Lenos Prodromou (3D), Andria Hadjiyiannakou (3B), Maria Demetriou (3B), Eleni Marangou (3C), Andrew Evgeniou (3A), Nikoleta Xydia (3A), Stylianos Marcou (3E), Kyriaki Vassiliou (3E). Alexei Gorskyi came away with 2 nd Prize in Form 1 for his Tesla Coil and Electroscope, while Eleni Marangou with 3 rd prize in Form 3 for her presentation on Aurora Borealis. Congratulations to all who participated! Tesla Coil by Alexei Gorskyi (1C) Aurora Borealis Presentation by Eleni Marangou (3C).

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream---and not make dreams your master; If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same:. If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling

The Poem Explained Although written over 100 years ago, IF is a poem with values and lessons for today s life. In fact, lines from the poem If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster/And treat those two imposters just the same, - appear over the entrance to Wimbledon s Centre Court a poignant reflection of the poem s timeless and inspiring quality. The poet wants to convey the courage, honesty, self-esteem and self-confidence that a person should have. He is telling us to be true to ourselves, despite the fact that there will always be someone who will misjudge or disagree with us. We should listen to others, however, and not become conceited. The poet also reflects on overcoming obstacles that get in our path. Follow our dreams, but be realistic in our aims. Perseverance is the key idea - keep going, even when things get tough. Never give up. It is truly hard to get back up after life has beaten you to the ground. It can be done, though, if we believe in ourselves and know that Yes! We did it once, so we can do it again! We are equal. Don t put ourselves above anyone else, but know that we are just as good as everyone else. Never waste time. Make every minute of every day count! Are we doing the positive things the poet describes? The poem is like a road map to life and we just have to learn to read the signs.

About...The Poet Rudyard Kipling ( ) The beauty and elegance of 'If' contrasts starkly with Rudyard Kipling's largely tragic and unhappy life. He was starved of love and attention and sent away by his parents; beaten and abused by his foster mother; and a failure at a public school which sought to develop qualities that were completely alien to Kipling. In later life the deaths of two of his children also affected Kipling deeply. Rudyard Kipling achieved fame quickly, based initially on his first stories and poems written in India (he returned there after College), and his great popularity with the British public continued despite subsequent critical reaction to some of his more conservative work, and critical opinion in later years that his poetry was superficial and lacking in depth of meaning. Significantly, Kipling turned down many honours offered to him including a knighthood, Poet Laureate and the Order of Merit, but in 1907 he accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature. Kipling's wide popular appeal survives through other works, notably The Jungle Book (1894) the novel, Kim (1901), and Just So Stories (1902).
