2 Martyr Agatha of Palermo in Sicily The Holy Virgin Martyr Agatha was the fifteen-year-old daughter of rich and respected Christian parents from the city of Palermo (formerly Panormos) in Sicily. During the persecution under the emperor Decius ( ), the city prefect of Catania, Quintianus, having heard about Agatha s wealth and beauty, sent his soldiers after her to bring her to trial as a Christian. At Catania they housed the saint with a certain rich woman, who had five daughters. They all attempted to tempt Saint Agatha with fine clothes, amusements and entertainment, urging her to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, but the saint disdained all these things. The more they tried to move her, the more resolute she became. She prayed that she might soon face martyrdom. During her interrogation under Quintianus, the holy martyr was swayed neither by the flattery, nor by the threats, and she was subjected to cruel torments. They also tried to remove her breasts with metal tongs, and when this failed, they used knives. The holy Apostle Peter appeared to her in prison and healed her wounds. Saint Agatha was led to torture again, and Quintianus was astonished to see her completely healed, with no trace of cutting. Then the torture began once more. At this moment an earthquake took place in the city, and many buildings were destroyed. Among those killed were two of Quintianus s advisors. The terrified inhabitants rushed to Quintianus, demanding an end to Agatha s tortures. Fearing a revolt by the people, Quintianus sent Saint Agatha back to prison. There the martyr, offering thanks to God, peacefully surrendered her soul to the Lord. 2 19

5 GOSPEL READING Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today The Gospel according to Luke 18:10-14 The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. 8 PHILOPTOCHOS GO RED SUNDAY! Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association s national call to increase awareness about heart disease. In support of this program, National Philoptochos is designating Sunday, February 5th as Philoptochos GO RED SUNDAY. St. Vasilios "Athena" Chapter is dedicated in giving back to our St. Vasilios community. Philoptochos Sisters will be passing out a red carnation to all women at the end of both Divine Liturgies as a symbol to live healthier lives. For more information, go to: THE SISTERHOOD OF ST. MAKRINA The Sisterhood of St Makrina will start up on Thursday, February 2. We will meet following Liturgy that morning around 10am. VOTIVE CANDLE SAFETY Votive Candle Safety We have noticed that increasingly the faithful have been lighting candles and placing them in front of the Iconostasis (icon screen). We have also noticed that more and more of the faithful are having their votive candles brought into the Holy Altar. Because of the number of votive candles, twice we have had wax spills on the chairs in the Altar. Furthermore, we often find that candles have been left burning in the Altar and in front of the Iconostasis and this is a fire hazard. The decision of the Parish Council, along with Father Chris, is that votive candles are to remain in the Narthex of the church where they remain in safety glass in case the plastic insert catches fire and not brought into the Altar or placed in front of the Iconostasis. 10 GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY LUNCHEON Saturday, March 25, 2017 St. Vasilios Philoptochos invites you to attend the Independence Day Luncheon on Saturday, March 25, 2017 immediately following the Divine Liturgy. There will be a special hour of coffee and a brunch cocktail from 10:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. followed by our Lenten lunch at 11:45 a.m. in the Rev. Andrew J. Demotses Educational Center. The 25th of March represents two very important holidays -- the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day. The menu will be baked haddock, fava beans, cole slaw, feta & olives, rolls, wine and coffee for $15. Children s menu will be pizza, juice and cookies for $5.
