This is the last day that dairy products can be eaten before the Lenten fast. The full fast begins the following day on Clean Monday, the first day of Great Lent. On the evening of the Sunday of Forgiveness the Church conducts the first service of Great Lent, the Vespers of Forgiveness, a service that directs us further on the path of repentance and helps us to acknowledge our need for forgiveness from God and to seek forgiveness from our brothers and sisters in Christ. This is the first time that the Lenten prayer of St. Ephraim accompanied by prostrations is read. At the end of the service all the faithful approach the priest and one another asking for mutual forgiveness. Ας πετάξουμε λοιπόν από πάνω μας, τα σκοτεινά έργα της αμαρτίας κι ας ενδυθούμε σαν όπλα τα φωτεινά έργα της ημέρας, όχι σε ξεφαντώματα και μεθύσια, όχι σε μοιχείες και ασελγείς πράξεις, όχι μέσα στη φιλονικία και τη ζηλοφθονία. Αλλά ντυθείτε τον Κύριο Ιησού Χριστό κι ας μην είναι όλη σας η φροντίδα για το σώμα, ώστε να θεριεύουν έτσι μέσα σας οι διάφορες επιθυμίες. Να συμπαθάτε και να αποδέχεσθε όποιον δεν έχει δυνατή πίστη και να μη σας σκανδαλίζει γι αυτόν ο λογισμός σας. Όποιος έχει δυνατή πίστη αυτός κρίνει ότι μπορεί να φάγει απ όλα όποιος όμως έχει αδύνατη πίστη, αυτός τρώγει χόρτα. Κι όποιος τρώγει να μην περιφρονεί, εκείνον πού δεν τρώγει. Κι όποιος δεν τρώγει να μην κατακρίνει εκείνον πού τρώγει. Γιατί αυτός είναι άνθρωπος πού τον δέχθηκε ο Θεός. Ποιός είσαι συ, πού κρίνει τον ξένον υπηρέτη; Τώρα αν αυτός είναι καλός ή κακός αυτό αφορά τον δικό του Κύριο. Είναι βέβαιο όμως πώς θα σταθεί, γιατί ο Θεός έχει τη δύναμη να τον κάνει να σταθεί. GOSPEL Forgiveness Sunday The Gospel According to Matthew 6:14-21 The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and 2

3 where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Όταν νηστεύετε, να μη γίνεστε σκυθρωποί, όπως οι υποκριτές, που παραμορφώνουν την όψη τους για να δείξουν στους ανθρώπους πως νηστεύουν. Σας βεβαιώνω πως έτσι έχουν κιόλας λάβει την ανταμοιβή τους. Εσύ, αντίθετα, όταν νηστεύεις, περιποιήσου τα μαλλιά σου και νίψε το πρόσωπο σου, για να μη φανεί στους ανθρώπους η νηστεία σου, αλλά στον Πατέρα σου, που βλέπει τις κρυφές πράξεις και ο Πατέρας σου, που βλέπει τις κρυφές πράξεις, θα σου το ανταποδώσει φανερά. Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. Lenten Prayer of St. Ephrem O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen. 3

5 February 18 th Forgiveness (Cheese-Fare) Sunday (Matt 6:14-21) This Sunday emphasizes forgiveness and how we must forgive others if God is to forgive us so we can break the chains of sinful tendency which we inherit from the Adam and Eve. This is the last day of preparation as the traditional Lenten fast begins on the following day where no meat, dairy or eggs are to be eaten according to the church tradition. Great Lent Begins February 19th Great Lent is the period that the Church has in her wisdom set aside for us to intensify our own spiritual growth through fasting, prayer and worship. If you follow the Church guidelines on fasting, make time to attend the services and intensify your own prayer life, you will be rewarded with a greater closeness to God. Sunday of Orthodoxy "Triumph of Orthodoxy." The Sunday of Orthodoxy is the first Sunday of Great Lent. The dominant theme of this Sunday since 843 has been that of the victory of the icons. In that year the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726, was finally laid to rest, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday in Lent. Ever since, this Sunday has been commemorated as the "Triumph of Orthodoxy." KITE FLYING AT 5PM 6:00-7:30 PM Compline with Part 1 of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete Αρχή της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, μμ, Απόδειπνον με Α Μέρος του Μ. Κανόνος του Αγ. Ανδρέου Κρήτης Why do we call it Kathara Deftera, Greek for Clean Monday. This is considered to be one of the most important feasts all over Greece, each year commencing the 40-day period of the Great Lent for the Eastern Greek Orthodox Church, which is called Sarakosti. The feast begins on the first day of the 7th week before the Orthodox Easter Sunday. Liturgically though, Clean Monday and thus Lent itself begins on the preceding Sunday night, at a special service, in which all present will bow down before one another and ask for forgiveness. In this way, the faithful begin the Great Lent with a clean conscience, forgiveness and renewed Christian love. The day of Clean Monday is sometimes called Ash Monday, by analogy to Ash Wednesday, the day during which Lent for the Western Christianity begins. Clean Monday also puts an end to the preceding Carnival celebrations, inviting all Orthodox Christians to leave behind the sinful attitudes associated with Carnival festivities and non-fasting foods, which were largely consumed during the BRING YOUR KITE FEBRUARY 19TH 5PM ST. GEORGE three weeks of the Carnival. As a result, the feast, which is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus, is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting foods, as well as the widespread custom of building and flying kites. Clean Monday, however, is not only associated with eating fasting products, but features also many traditions being held all over Greece. Traditionally, as Clean Monday is considered to mark the beginning of the spring season, kite flying is also part of the tradition. Young people and adults organize excursions to open areas, so as to fill the skies with their kites. Apart from kite flying, many areas in Greece maintain their own regional customs. The feast of Clean Monday and all associated traditions and celebrations are in the hearts of the Greek people, as they provide an opportunity for leisure and escaping from the daily routine, while coming in contact with nature and the country s cultural heritage. 7

10 FORGIVENESS SUNDAY (CHEESEFARE) Introduction: The Sunday of Forgiveness is the last Sunday prior to the commencement of Great Lent. During the pre-lenten period, the services of the Church include hymns from the Triodion, a liturgical book that contains the services from the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, the tenth before Pascha (Easter), through Great and Holy Saturday. On the Sunday of Forgiveness focus is placed on the exile of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, an event that shows us how far we have fallen in sin and separated ourselves from God. At the onset of Great Lent and a period of intense fasting, this Sunday reminds us of our need for God s forgiveness and guides our hearts, minds, and spiritual efforts on returning to Him in repentance. Biblical Story The Sunday of Forgiveness, the last of the preparatory Sundays before Great Lent, has two themes: it commemorates Adam s expulsion from Paradise, and it accentuates our need for forgiveness. There are obvious reasons why these two things should be brought to our attention as we stand on the threshold of Great Lent. One of the primary images in the Triodion is that of the return to Paradise. Lent is a time when we weep with Adam and Eve before the closed gate of Eden, repenting with them for the sins that have deprived us of our free communion with God. But Lent is also a time when we are preparing to celebrate the saving event of Christ s death and rising, which has reopened Paradise to us once more (Luke 23:43). So sorrow for our exile in sin is tempered by hope of our re-entry into Paradise. The second theme, that of forgiveness, is emphasized in the Gospel reading for this Sunday (Matthew 6:14-21) and in the special ceremony of mutual forgiveness at the end of the Vespers on Sunday evening. Before we enter the Lenten fast, we are reminded that there can be no true fast, no genuine repentance, no reconciliation with God, unless we are at the same time reconciled with one another. A fast without mutual love is the fast of demons. We do not travel the road of Lent as isolated individuals but as members of a family. Our asceticism and fasting should not separate us from others, but should link us to them with everstronger bonds. The Sunday of Forgiveness also directs us to see that Great Lent is a journey of liberation from our enslavement to sin. The Gospel lesson sets the conditions for this liberation. The first one is fasting the refusal to accept the desires and urges of our fallen nature as normal, the effort to free ourselves from the dictatorship of the flesh and matter over the spirit. To be effective, however, our fast must not be hypocritical, a showing off. We must appear not unto men to fast but to our Father who is in secret (vv ). The second condition is forgiveness If you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you (vv ). The triumph of sin, the main sign of its rule over the world, is division, opposition, separation, hatred. Therefore, the first break through this fortress of sin is forgiveness the return to unity, solidarity, love. To forgive is to put between me and my enemy the radiant forgiveness of God Himself. To forgive is to reject the hopeless dead-ends of human relations and to refer them to Christ. Forgiveness is truly a breakthrough of the Kingdom into this sinful and fallen world. Icon of the Feast The icon of the Sunday of the Last Judgment incorporates all of the elements of the parable from Matthew 25: Christ sits on the throne and before him the Last Judgment takes place. He is extending his hands in blessing upon the Theotokos on his right, and John the Baptist on his left. Seated on smaller thrones are the 10

11 Apostles, represented by Peter and Paul, a depiction of the words of Christ in Matthew 19:28. (1.) The icon shows Adam and Eve standing before Jesus Christ. Prior to their descent into sin through disobedience, Adam and Eve were blessed with a beautiful relationship of communion and fellowship with God. However, they were tempted by the devil appearing in the form of a serpent to disobey God and eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17). When they took of the fruit and sinned, they realized that they were naked. Further, when they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord (3:8). The icon shows Adam and Eve attempting to cover themselves with fig leaves as they try to hide, and yet they stand ashamed before the Lord. Because of their disobedience the Lord expelled them from the garden. The icon shows the Archangel of the Lord directing them out of Paradise, through the gate of Eden where God placed the cherubim and a sword flaming and guarding the way to the tree of life (3:23-24). Adam and Eve are dressed in the garments of skins made for them by God (3:20). Orthodox Christian Celebration of the Sunday of Forgiveness The Sunday of Forgiveness is commemorated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, which is preceded by the Matins service. A Great Vespers is conducted on Saturday evening. The hymns of the Triodion for this day are added to the usual prayers and hymns of the weekly commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ. The naming of the Sunday is taken from the commemoration of the Exile of Adam and Eve from Paradise and from the Gospel reading of the Divine Liturgy. Scripture readings for the Sunday of the Last Judgment are: At the Orthros (Matins): The prescribed weekly Gospel reading. At the Divine Liturgy: Romans 13:11-14:4, Matthew 6: The Sunday of Forgiveness is also known as Cheesefare Sunday. This is the last day that dairy products can be eaten before the Lenten fast. Orthodox Christians are encouraged to enter Great Lent in repentance and confession by attending these services, coming for the Sacrament of Confession, and dedicating themselves to worship, prayer, and fasting throughout the Lenten period. The first day of Lent, Clean Monday, signifies the beginning of a period of cleansing and purification of sins through repentance. On the Saturday before this Sunday, the second of three Saturdays of the Souls are held. This is a special commemoration when the Church offers a Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service for the departed faithful. This is considered a universal commemoration of the dead. Through the memorial services, the Church is commending to God all who have departed and who are now awaiting the Last Judgment. This specific Saturday is a general commemoration of all the ascetic Saints of the Church, both men and women. As we set out on the Lenten fast we are reminded that we will make this journey as members of a family, supported by the intercessions of the Saints. 11

16 Η αγία και μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή... πορεία προς την ΖΩΗ Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή, η ακρόπολη του εορτολογίου της Εκκλησίας. Ανοίγεται και πάλι μπροστά μας «το στάδιο των αρετών», στο οποίο ο υμνωδός της Εκκλησίας μας, μας καλεί να εισέλθουμε, «αναζωσάμενοι τον καλόν της νηστείας αγώνα». Νηστεία, με όλο το βάθος και το πλάτος και το ύψος, που της δίνουν ο λόγος του Θεού και οι ερμηνευτές του, οι θεοφόροι Πατέρες. Σήμερα Κυριακή της Τυρινής, μια μέρα πριν την έναρξη της (Σαρακοστής), και η ευαγγελική περικοπή είναι παρμένη από την επί του Όρους ομιλία του Ιησού Χριστού (Ματθ. κεφ. 6). Η επιλογή της οφείλεται σε δύο κυρίως λόγους που σχετίζονται άμεσα μεταξύ τους: στο συναξάρι της ημέρας, που γίνεται αναφορά στην εξορία του Αδάμ από τον Παράδεισο της τρυφής, και στην εικόνα της Σαρακοστής ως πορείας της ανθρωπότητας από την πτώση στην ανάσταση. Τρία σημεία, τρείς κατευθυντήριες γραμμές θέτει μπροστά μας το ευαγγέλιο: Πρώτον, τη συγχωρητικότητα ως προϋπόθεση της συγνώμης του Θεού προς τον άνθρωπο, δεύτερον την αληθινή νηστεία και τρίτον την αναζήτηση του αληθινού θησαυρού, της βασιλείας του Θεού. Συν χωρώντας με το Θεό και τους αδελφούς. «Εὰν ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν, ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν». Δεν γίνεται να ζητούμε από τους άλλους να συγχωρέσουν τα σφάλματά μας, ενώ εμείς να φαινόμαστε σκληρόκαρδοι και να μην συγχωρούμε τους άλλους όταν διαπράξουν κάποιο σφάλμα. Όταν ο χριστιανός δεν αγαπά και δεν συγχωρά τον συνάνθρωπό του, είναι σαν να μην αγαπά τον εαυτό του σαν να τον αποκλείει από την αγάπη και τη συγγνώμη του Θεού (Α Ιω. 3,17). Όλοι οι χριστιανοί πρέπει να έχουμε μια καρδιά γεμάτη αμνησικακία και όλοι σαν τον ουράνιο Πατέρα μας πρώτοι να σπεύδουμε στη συμφιλίωση, στη συγχώρεση, στην αγάπη (Λουκ. 15,20). Εξάλλου η συγχωρητικότητα αποτελεί ένα θέμα σημαντικό για εμάς τους χριστιανούς έτσι ώστε να το ενσωματώσουμε στην προσευχή μας. Η Κυριακή Προσευχή, που μας έχει παραδοθεί από τον ίδιο τον Χριστό, περικλείει αυτή την ανάγκη της συγχωρητικότητας στο στίχο που λέει «και άφες ημίν τα οφειλήματα ημών, ως και ημείς αφίεμεν τοις οφειλέταις ημών». Ο Χριστός εδώ μας το λέει ξεκάθαρα ότι αν δεν συγχωρήσουμε τους συνανθρώπους μας για τα δικά τους παραπτώματα, τότε δεν θα συγχωρέσει και ο Θεός τα δικά μας παραπτώματα. Μόνο έτσι θα μπορέσουμε να κατανοήσουμε τη σημασία που έχει η συγχωρητικότητα. Όταν δηλαδή βάλουμε τον εαυτό μας στη θέση του άλλου, τότε αντιλαμβανόμαστε πόσο ανάγκη έχουμε την συγχώρεση από τους συνανθρώπους μας. Η μνησικακία δεν οδηγεί στη βασιλεία του Θεού και στη θέα της δόξας Του. «Πάσης αμαρτίας, αυτή χαλεπότερα», υπογραμμίζει ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος. Μισεί και αποστρέφεται ο Θεός τον άνθρωπο που δεν συγχωρεί τον συνάνθρωπο του, αλλά συνέχεια θυμάται το κακό που του έγινε και έτσι χάνει την φιλανθρωπία του Θεού. Γενικά εκείνος που μισεί και δεν διαλύει την έχθρα, λιώνει, βρίσκεται σε συνεχιζόμενη εσωτερική ακαταστασία και πόλεμο. Η μνησικακία είναι μεγαλύτερη αμαρτία και από την πορνεία και τη μοιχεία. Ο δυνατός λόγος του ιερού Χρυσοστόμου και πάλι μας καθοδηγεί: «Έχεις αδικηθεί πολύ και στερήθηκες πολλά εξαιτίας κάποιου, κακολογήθηκες και ζημιώθηκες σε πολύ σοβαρά θέματα σου και γι αυτό θέλεις να δεις να τιμωρείται ο αδελφός σου; Και εδώ πάλι είναι χρήσιμο να τον συγχωρήσεις. Γιατί; Εάν θελήσεις ο ίδιος να εκδικηθείς και να επιτεθείς εναντίον του είτε με τα λόγια σου, είτε με κάποια ενέργεια σου, ή με την κατάρα σου, ο Θεός όχι μόνο δεν θα επέμβει κατ αυτού-εφόσον εσύ ανέλαβες την τιμωρία του-αλλά επιπλέον θα σε τιμωρήσει ως θεομάχο. Άφησε τα πράγματα στο Θεό. Αυτός θα τα τακτοποιήσει πολύ καλύτερα απ ότι εσύ θέλεις». 16

17 Η αληθής νηστεία ως μέσο και όχι ως σκοπός προβολής Αρχικά καθιερώθηκε η νηστεία της Τετάρτης και της Παρασκευής σε ανάμνηση των γεγονότων της σύλληψης και της Σταύρωσης του Ιησού Χριστού που έγιναν αυτές τις δυο μέρες. Η αξία της νηστείας φαίνεται από το ότι την συνέστησε ο ίδιος ο Θεός όταν οι Πρωτόπλαστοι ήταν στον Παράδεισο, για να τους προστατέψει σαν μάνα από το κακό «συνηλικιώτης» του ανθρώπου λέγει ο Μέγας Βασίλειος. Από τον καρπό του δένδρου της γνώσεως του καλού και του κακού δεν θα φάγετε είπε στον Αδάμ ο Θεός. Αυτό το δεν θα φάγετε αποτελεί νομοθεσία νηστείας και εγκράτειας. Η μη τήρηση της τόσο μικρής απαγόρευσης από τους Πρωτοπλάστους, ήταν και η αιτία της εξορίας τους από τον Παράδεισο. Υπάρχουν δύο μορφές νηστείας. Η υλική (σωματική) που αναφέρετε στις τροφές και η πνευματική η οποία αναφέρετε στις αμαρτίες. Η σωματική νηστεία συνίσταται στην αποχή από ορισμένες τροφές και στη λήψη άλλων νηστήσιμων τροφών. Παράλληλα όμως πρέπει να γίνεται περιορισμός και λιτότητα στη διατροφή. Πνευματική νηστεία, είναι η νηστεία της ψυχής, η αλλοτρίωση των κακών αυτή είναι ευάρεστη στο Θεό νηστεία. Η αλλοτρίωση των κακών είναι η αποφυγή κάθε είδους αμαρτίας, η αποφυγή κακών λόγων, επιθυμιών, ακάθαρτων λογισμών, η καταπολέμηση του εγωισμού και των παθών, η καταλλαγή και συμφιλίωση με τους άλλους ανθρώπους. «Συ δε νηστεύων, άλειψαί σου την κεφαλήν και το πρόσωπόν σου νίψαι, όπως μη φανής τοις ανθρώποις νηστεύων». Ο στίχος, εκτός από το προφανές νόημα που έχει το «άλειψαί σου την κεφαλήν και το πρόσωπόν σου νίψαι» που είναι η αποφυγή της επιδεικτικής εμφανίσεως του νηστεύοντος, έχει και κάποιο βαθύτερο νόημα. Το πρόσωπο που νίπτεται είναι «ο εσωτερικός άνθρωπος της καρδιάς», που νίπτεται με τα δάκρυα της μετανοίας, ενώ η κεφαλή που αλείφεται είναι ο νους, που με την προσευχή ελκύει την χάρη του Αγίου Πνεύματος και το έλεος του Θεού. Αυτά τα δύο εσωτερικά έργα (δηλ. η κρυφή εργασία για την κάθαρση της καρδιάς και η αναφορά της ψυχής, δια της προσευχής, προς τον Θεό) είναι εκείνα που κατακαίουν την υποκρισία στη ρίζα της, διότι γίνονται «εν τω κρυπτώ» και «ο Πατήρ ο ουράνιος» θα τα επιβραβεύση «εν τω φανερώ». «Μη θησαυρίζετε επί της γης Θησαυρίζετε εν ουρανώ» Μια θέση και μια άρση. Όποιος άνθρωπος έχει πάρει την απόφαση του επί γης θησαυρισμού γίνεται ψυχρός σαν το μέταλλο, σκληρός σαν το γρανίτη. Γίνεται αδιάφορος για τα πνευματικά αγαθά, και έτσι κατεργάζεται την καταστροφή του. Ο Κύριος όμως προσθέτει: Εκεί στον ουρανό δεν θα υπάρχει σκόρος για να φάει τους θησαυρούς σας, ούτε κλέφτες για να σας τους κλέψουν και να τους εξαφανίσουν. Ο άνθρωπος ο οποίος αποφάσισε να θησαυρίσει «εν ουρανώ» θα αποκτά όλο και περισσότερη διάθεση πνευματικού θησαυρισμού, ο οποίος όχι μόνο δεν καταστρέφει το σώμα και την ψυχή, αλλ αντίθετα τα τονώνει και τα κατευθύνει σε μια αιώνια ευτυχία και μακαριότητα. Ο πνευματικός θησαυρισμός είναι ανώτερος, είναι εκείνος τον οποίο ζητά η ψυχή του καλού ανθρώπου και είναι εκείνος για τον οποίο δόθηκε από τον Θεό η επιθυμία του θησαυρισμού. Όσο πιο βαθιά κατανοούμε τις αλήθειες του Ευαγγελίου, μετέχουμε στα νοήματα της υμνογραφίας της Εκκλησίας μας και μετέχουμε στη λατρευτική ζωή, τόσο πιο σωστά θα θησαυρίζουμε «εν ουρανώ». Επανερχόμαστε και πάλι στο δεύτερο κεντρικό θέμα της περικοπής εν όψει της ενάρξεως της Μ.Σαρακοστής. Ας μπούμε λοιπόν με χαρά στο στάδιο των αρετών, στη περίοδο της νηστείας. Η σημερινή κοινωνία της κατανάλωσης από τους πλουσίους και τα φαινόμενα των αδελφών μας που έχουν ανάγκη από ένα πιάτο φαϊ ταυτίζει την επιθυμία με την ανάγκη. Η αποφυγή της σπατάλης και του περιττού, η υπέρβαση της καταναλωτικής μας βουλιμίας, θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει σήμερα το σκοπό της νηστείας. Δια μέσου της (σ.σ νηστείας) να βοηθήσουμε οι άνθρωποι όσους έχουν ανάγκη, αν δεν έχουμε άλλο τρόπο να βοηθήσουμε. «και περικεφαλαίαν την ελεημοσύνη» μας τονίζει ο ιερός υμνωδός. Να κόψουμε από το δικό μας στόμα για να δώσουμε σ αυτούς που στερούνται. Όσο η κοιλιά αδειάζει την περίοδο της νηστείας, τόσο το πνεύμα γεμίζει. Απολαμβάνει περισσότερη προσευχή, περισσότερη μελέτη του λόγου του Θεού-Μαζεύουμε θησαυρούς στο ουρανό! «Κατατρυφήσωμεν του Κυρίου» (Μ. Βασίλειος ΕΠΕ 6.72). 17

20 The Meaning of Memorial Services Praying for our Departed Loved Ones by Fr. Luke A. Veronis At no matter what age of life we die, we always see death as a distortion of our existence. Death portrays a horrible tragedy because it is the fruit of evil in the world. We were not created to die. When Almighty God created the first man and woman in his own image and likeness, he meant for all humanity to live for eternity with Him. Since God has no end, He desired for His beloved creation to dwell in His infinite love forever. This is why, deep within each of us, we all sense an innate desire for life! From this perspective, death is fearful, and something we despise. And yet, although we can see death as the greatest evil, St. Paul counsels us not to mourn as those who do not have hope. He advises us to never despair over the dead, because if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (1 Thess 4:14) Here is the essence of our Christian faith and the Good News we proclaim week after week. Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by His own death, and granting life to those in the tombs! For all of us who have believed in Christ and walked with Him in the newness of life here and now, death becomes but a doorway into a fuller union with Him. This is why St. Paul could say, For me to live is Christ and to die is gain. (Phil 1:21) The Apostle Paul goes on to say, If we have been united [through baptism] in the likeness of Christ s death, we also shall be [united] in the likeness of His resurrection. (Rom 6:4-5) Today, I want to talk about the topic of death because I want to relate it to the Memorial Services we do so often at the end of our Sunday Divine Liturgies. We all have loved ones who have passed away, and as a Church we never forget them. At each Divine Liturgy, I remember all the faithful who have died and passed on. On their anniversaries, like the 40 day memorial that we offer today for Kosta Magaritidis, or the 17 year anniversary, which we also offer today for Kosma Hadjoclou, we remember the departed, and pray for them. Why? What is the purpose of our memorial service and why do we pray for the dead? To answer this question, I first want us to understand clearly how we, as Orthodox Christians, view death itself. Then, I will explain why we remember the dead continuously, and pray for them. Although death is the culmination of evil in our world, for Christians our faith in Jesus Christ transforms death. For one who is united to our Lord here on earth, death is no longer a fearful and tragic conclusion of one s life. It is but an entranceway into a new beginning! I remember a story my parents told me about their first travel abroad. My father and mother had only been married for half a year, and my mother was several months pregnant, when both got on a boat heading towards Greece, so that my father could study at the University of Athens. Both my parents remember vividly the scene of their farewell, as they leaned on the rail of the ship waving goodbye to tearful family and friends. Many mixed emotions passed through their minds as the ship slowly sailed away, and the figures of their loved ones got smaller and smaller in the horizon. During the long journey which followed, my parents became anxious about their separation from family, their pregnancy, and their new life in Athens. When they arrived at the port of Piraeus many days later, however, their anxieties and concerns were washed away as other relatives and family friends lovingly waited to receive them in their new country. Death itself may seem like an uncertain, even fearful journey, and yet as Christians we know who awaits us on the other side. Our Lord Jesus Christ is there, lovingly waiting, with His arms outstretched, ready to embrace us in deeper union with Himself, and welcome us into our eternal home. As Christians, we can face death with hope, knowing that our loving, all merciful and compassionate Lord awaits us! Divine love is greater than death. St. Paul even dares to say, Death has been swallowed up in victory! The victory of divine love. Well, this same love is central to understanding the role of the Memorial Service in the Orthodox 20

21 Church. We remember and pray for the dead because of God s divine love for us, and our sacred love for one another. As the famous French writer and Catholic reformer Leon Bloy once wrote, To say to a person I love you is tantamount to saying you shall never die. We express our love to our departed ones through our prayers to reaffirm that those who have died are not dead to us, nor to God. Our love for one another continues even after death. Metropolitan Anthony Bloom so beautifully explains, A person bereaved must learn never to speak of the love relationship that existed before in the past tense. One should never say We loved one another. We should always say We love each other. If we allow our love to become a thing of the past, we have to recognize that we do not believe in the continuing life of the person that died. St. Paul teaches, Love never ends. The Church understands well this precept, and therefore, continues to pray for the dead always. Since love never ends, our prayers never end; our communion with the departed never end; our union with them through Christ never ends. Our prayers for the dead reveal in a most beautiful way our understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ both here on earth and in heaven. We are one Church, which includes those struggling here on earth, together with those who now live in fuller union with God in paradise. Just as we pray for one another here on earth, we also pray for those who have departed. The Body of Christ is not just the members who we see each week in Church. The Church is also the saints who we see in the icons, and the beloved faithful who have died and live in Christ. That is why before each Divine Liturgy, when I am preparing the bread which will be used for Holy Communion, I offer prayers for each one of you by name, as well offer prayers for the names of many who have died. There is no separation in our prayers for the living and the dead. Divine love unites us all together, as one Church. So we hold Memorial Services and pray for the dead because we love! Now, I know some people will say, OK, I understand we pray for the dead because our love for them never ends, but do our prayers actually help those who have died? Sincere prayer unites us to God, and when we pray for others, we believe our prayers can help others in their own union towards their Creator. Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald, a professor at Holy Cross Theological School, writes, Death alters but does not destroy the bond of love and faith which exists among all the members of the Church. Orthodoxy believes that through our prayers, those "who have fallen asleep in the faith and the hope of the Resurrection" continue to have opportunity to grow closer to God. Therefore, the Church prays constantly for her members who have died in Christ. We place our trust in the love of God and the power of mutual love and forgiveness. We pray that God will forgive the sins of the faithful departed, and that He will receive them into the company of Saints in the heavenly Kingdom. Of course, some who have died have not lived a righteous life of faith and love in Christ Jesus. Even for such as these, we still pray with hope. We know that God s unfathomable mercy and love is immeasurably greater than any sin or shortcoming of a person, no matter how evil. Therefore, by turning to this ocean of love in prayer, we believe as Orthodox Christians that our prayers in some way, and this way may be a part of the mystery of God, our prayers bring in some way comfort and benefit to the person we pray for! Love compels us to pray for one another, with hope and with faith. And death can never stop this! As a symbol of this hope we have for the dead, it is traditional for the family to bring a bowl of boiled wheat to the Church for the Memorial Service. This wheat, known as kollyva in Greek, reminds us of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ spoke, Unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. 22 Η σημερινή τέταρτη Κυριακή του Τριωδίου ονομάζεται Κυριακή της Τυρινής. Η ονομασία αυτή προήλθε από την κατάλυση γαλακτοκομικών προϊόντων που κάνουν οι πιστοί κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας αυτής. Το σημερινό αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα είναι παρμένο από την προς Ρωμαίους επιστολή του Αποστόλου Παύλου και στοχεύει στο να μας προετοιμάσει για το πώς πρέπει να συμπεριφερόμαστε κατά την περίοδο της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, η οποία ξεκινά από αύριο. Το κείμενο αυτό για να μπορέσουμε να το καταλάβουμε καλύτερα, το χωρίζουμε σε δυο μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος περιλαμβάνουμε τις συμβουλές τις οποίες δίνει ο Απόστολος Παύλος προς τους πιστούς για να τους βοηθήσει στο να αυξήσουν τους πνευματικούς καρπούς της χριστιανικής τους ζωής, έχοντας υπόψη τους ότι ο χρόνος της δευτέρας παρουσίας του Κυρίου είναι πολύ κοντά. Στο δεύτερο μέρος περιλαμβάνουμε τη συμπεριφορά που πρέπει να έχουν αυτοί που είναι δυνατοί στην πίστη, στους αδύνατους, σ αυτούς δηλαδή που δεν είναι εδραιωμένοι καλά στην χριστιανική πίστη. Αυτό το κάνει για να μην χάνουν την πίστη τους κάποιοι χριστιανοί εξαιτίας της διάκρισης κάποιων τροφών που γίνονταν μεταξύ των πρώτων χριστιανών. Η προσδοκία της δευτέρας ελεύσεως του Χριστού κάνει τον Απόστολο Παύλο να καλεί τους πιστούς να μην αδρανούν αλλά να βρίσκονται συνεχώς σε μια πνευματική εγρήγορση. Η ζωή του πιστού από τη βάπτισή του και έπειτα αποτελεί μια πορεία που θα τον οδηγήσει σ αυτό που πραγματικά προσδοκά και που δεν είναι άλλο από την βασιλεία του Θεού. Στην πορεία του αυτή καλείται να απορρίψει την αμαρτία και να γεμίσει τη ζωή του με τα χαρίσματα του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Για να καταφέρει να πετύχει αυτό πρέπει να συνταυτίσει το θέλημά του με το θέλημα του Κυρίου. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος συστήνει στους πιστούς να πετάξουν από πάνω τους τα έργα του σκότους και να ενδυθούν τα όπλα του φωτός. Λέγοντας έργα του σκότους εννοεί τα έργα της αμαρτίας τα οποία οδηγούν τον άνθρωπο μακριά από το Θεό. Ενώ όπλα του φωτός εννοεί τα όπλα της αρετής τα οποία οδηγούν τον άνθρωπο στο να βιώνει από την παρούσα ζωή την μέλλουσα. Στην προσπάθειά του να βοηθήσει τους πιστούς να ενδυθούν τα όπλα του φωτός και να αποφύγουν τα έργα του σκότους, τους συνιστά την αποφυγή τριών ζευγών από αμαρτήματα. Το πρώτο ζεύγος αναφέρεται στα συμπόσια με τραγούδια αισχρού περιεχομένου όπου γίνεται κατάχρηση του ποτού οδηγώντας τους ανθρώπους στη μέθη και υποδουλώνοντας τους στα πάθη τους. Το δεύτερο ζεύγος αναφέρεται στις παράνομες σαρκικές σχέσεις και διάφορες άλλες σαρκικές αμαρτίες που οδηγούν τον άνθρωπο στην ανηθικότητα. Και το τρίτο ζεύγος που αναφέρεται στις φιλονικίες και το ζήλο που έχουν οι άνθρωποι μεταξύ τους. Τα αμαρτήματα αυτά όταν τα δούμε προσεκτικά βλέπουμε ότι έχουν ως κύριο στόχο να εξυπηρετήσουν τον εγωισμό του ανθρώπου και υποβιβάσουν την αγάπη που πρέπει να δείχνουμε προς τους συνανθρώπους μας. Η ολοκλήρωση της ζωής του πιστού δεν επιτυγχάνεται απλά και μόνο από την αποχή από αυτά τα αμαρτήματα αλλά ολοκληρώνεται με την ένδυση του Χριστού. Ένδυση του Χριστού σημαίνει να ζούμε σύμφωνα με το θέλημά Του έτσι ώστε να είμαστε ενωμένοι μαζί Του. Ένα άλλο φοβερό αμάρτημα στο οποίο αναφέρεται εδώ ο Απόστολος Παύλος είναι η κατάκριση, την οποία πρέπει να αποφεύγουμε όλοι ανεξαιρέτως με κάθε τρόπο από τη ζωή μας. Οι πιστοί θα λογοδοτήσουν ο καθένας ξεχωριστά γα τις πράξεις και τη ζωή του ενώπιον του Θεού. Ο ίδιος ο Χριστός μας τονίζει να μην κρίνουμε τους συνανθρώπους μας για να μην μας κρίνει και εμάς ο Θεός. Με το κριτήριο που κρίνουμε θα κριθούμε και με το μέτρο που μετράμε θα μετρηθούμε (Ματθ. 7,1-2). 22

23 Η κατάκριση περιέχει εωσφορικό εγωισμό και εκβάλλει την αγάπη που πρέπει να δείχνουμε προς τους άλλους συνανθρώπους μας. Έτσι νουθετεί τους πιστούς να δέχονται τους άλλους χωρίς να τους κατακρίνουν. Αν κάποιος έχει ασθενική πίστη να τον δεχόμαστε και να τον στηρίζουμε και όχι να τον κατακρίνουμε. Ιδιαίτερα την περίοδο αυτή που ξεκινά η νηστεία της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής να μην κατακρίνουμε τους συνανθρώπους μας. Θέλοντας να μας φανερώσει πόσο φοβερό πράγμα είναι η κατάκριση μας λέει: «ποιος είσαι εσύ που θα κρίνεις ένα ξένο υπηρέτη;». Όλοι οι πιστοί είμαστε ίσοι μεταξύ μας δούλοι στον ίδιο Κύριο, πως είναι δυνατόν να κρίνουμε ο ένας τον άλλο. Το έργο αυτό ανήκει μόνο στον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό, που είναι ο μοναδικός κριτής της ζωής του κάθε ανθρώπου. Η Αγία και Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή που ξεκινά από αύριο είναι η ωραιότερη και κατανυχτικότερη περίοδος του εκκλησιαστικού έτους. Ας εισέλθουμε σε αυτή έχοντας υπόψη μας τις προτροπές τις οποίες μας δίνει σήμερα ο Απόστολος Παύλος μέσα από αυτή την περικοπή. Αυτό θα μας βοηθήσει στην πνευματική μας αφύπνιση και την αύξηση του πνευματικού μας αγώνα ώστε να οδηγηθούμε και εμείς προς την λαμπροφόρο ανάσταση του Κυρίου μας. Καλή Σαρακοστή. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting.
