The bags include religious books and quiet activities that can help your children learn about the Orthodox faith, with your guidance, during Divine Liturgy. You are also encouraged to work with the young ones during the Liturgy by having them stand up for the processions, Epistle and Gospel readings, the Nicene Creed, and the Lord's Prayer, as well as kneel at the appropriate time. Engage them in looking at the icons and quietly remind them of what they see in Church. Please RETURN THE BAGS in their original condition to the room in the Narthex prior to Sunday Church School so others can enjoy them the following Sunday. The CHURCH QUIET BAGS were lovingly donated by the Moustoukas and Peterson families and sponsored by the ECYM Committee. YOUTH HYMNOLOGY PROGRAM Parents, please mark two important Saturdays on your calendars. The Sunday Church School students have been practicing special hymns to chant in church during April and May, and their presence is needed on the following dates: April 23 9:00 am Saturday of Lazarus Service Rehearsal immediately after Divine Liturgy, followed by Communion Breakfast April 30 9:00 am SHARP! Students will chant Hymn of the Three Youths, and teens will offer Bible readings. Students in 4th Grade and older are invited to sing with the adult choir on Sundays and Friday evenings, when mentors will assist them. They must arrive by 10:00 am on Sundays and by 7:00 pm on Fridays. There has been a positive response to this initiative. No matter how much we may study, it is not possible to come to know God unless we live according to His commandments for God is not known by science but by the Holy Spirit. Many philosophers and learned men came to the belief that God exists, but they did not know God. It is one thing to believe that God exists and another to know Him. If someone has come to know God by the Holy Spirit, his soul will burn with love for God day and night, and his soul cannot be bound to any earthly thing. (Saint Silouan the Athonite, Writings, VIII.3) As it is impossible to verbally describe the sweetness of honey to one who has never tasted honey, so the goodness of God cannot be clearly communicated by way of teaching if we ourselves are not able to penetrate into the goodness of the Lord by our own experience. (Saint Basil the Great, Conversations on the Psalms, 29) If a person wants to get an idea about the pyramids of Egypt, he must either trust those who have been in immediate proximity to the pyramids, or he must get next to them himself. There is no third option. In the same way a person can get an impression of God: He must either trust those who have stood and stand in immediate proximity to God, or he must take pains to come into such proximity himself. (Saint Nicholas of Serbia, Thoughts on Good and Evil) The Fathers of the Church share great wisdom on a myriad of experiences that help us grow and progress on our Spiritual Walk. The three samples of wisdom from the Fathers address the question: Do you know God? To know Him we must study Him, and we must attempt to communicate with Him. You cannot have any fruitful relationship without healthy communication. When we meet someone new in Church, how do we get to know that person to welcome him/her to our Spiritual Home? We walk up to them, introduce ourselves, and engage in conversation. To know God better we also engage in communication: prayer. Moreover, God has left His thoughts and hopes for us His Children through His revealed Word in the Bible. Each Christian confirmed in the Orthodox Faith has received the Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit. We may also get to know God better by recognizing Him in His people God, the Holy Spirit is in all who are Baptized and Confirmed. We may come to know God through being in His Holy House, the Church. As we gather in the corporate Body of Christ, we are the Church that collectively lifts up her voice to give God the glory and praise His Holy Name. When we come to know God, we understand how each of us may follow His commandments and how we ought to live our lives for Him.
