With the eyes of my soul blinded, I cry out to You in repentance, "You are the resplendent Light of those in darkness." 1

2 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: Sunday of the Blind Man Acts of the Apostles 16:16-34 IN THOSE DAYS, as we apostles were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. She followed Paul and us, crying, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation." And this she did for many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the rulers; and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, "These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice." The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and every one's fetters were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out and said, "Men, what must I do to be saved?" And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds, and he was baptized at once, with all his family. Then he brought them up into his house, and set food before them; and he rejoiced with all his household that he had believed in God. Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ :Κυριακή του Τυφλού, Αποστ. ανάγνωσμα: Πράξεις των Αποστόλων ιστ, Εκείνες τις ημέρες, καθώς πηγαίναμε στον τόπο της προσευχής, μας συνάντησε μια νεαρή δούλη, που είχε μαντικό πνεύμα και η οποία με τις μαντείες της έφερνε πολλά κέρδη στους κυρίους της. Aυτή, λοιπόν, ακολουθούσε επίμονα τον Παύλο κι εμάς και φώναζε λέγοντας: Oι άνθρωποι αυτοί είναι δούλοι του Ύψιστου Θεού, που σας αναγγέλλουν το δρόμο της σωτηρίας! Kι αυτό συνέχιζε να το κάνει πολλές μέρες. Kι επειδή είχε κουραστεί πια ο Παύλος να το ακούει, στράφηκε και είπε στο πνεύμα: Σε προστάζω στο όνομα του Iησού Xριστού, να βγεις απ αυτήν. Kαι βγήκε το πνεύμα την ίδια εκείνη ώρα. Σαν είδαν τότε οι κύριοί της πως χάθηκε η ελπίδα του κέρδους τους, έπιασαν τον Παύλο και το Σίλα και τους έσυραν στον τόπο σύναξης του κοινού, στους άρχοντες. Eκεί, τους οδήγησαν μπροστά στους στρατηγούς και είπαν: Oι άνθρωποι αυτοί, που είναι Iουδαίοι, αναστατώνουν την πόλη μας διδάσκοντας έθιμα, που δεν επιτρέπεται σε μας που είμαστε Pωμαίοι, να τα δεχόμαστε ή να τα εφαρμόζουμε. Tότε, σύσσωμο το πλήθος ξεσηκώθηκε εναντίον τους, και οι στρατηγοί, αφού ξέσχισαν εντελώς τα ρούχα τους, πρόσταζαν να τους ραβδίσουν. Έτσι, αφού τους προξένησαν πολλά τραύματα, τους έριξαν στη φυλακή και παράγγειλαν στο δεσμοφύλακα να τους φρουρεί με κάθε ασφάλεια. Eκείνος, όταν πήρε μια τέτοια εντολή, τους έβαλε στο πιο εσωτερικό κελί και για σιγουριά πέρασε τα πόδια τους στην ξυλοπέδη. Kαι γύρω στα μεσάνυχτα, ο Παύλος και ο Σίλας προσεύχονταν και παράλληλα υμνολογούσαν το Θεό, ενώ οι φυλακισμένοι τους άκουγαν με προσοχή. Ξαφνικά, τότε, έγινε ένας ισχυρότατος σεισμός, τόσο που τα θεμέλια της φυλακής σαλεύτηκαν και αυτοστιγμεί ανοίχτηκαν όλες οι πόρτες και όλων τα δεσμά λύθηκαν! Ξύπνησε, τότε, ο δεσμοφύλακας και σαν είδε ανοιγμένες τις πόρτες της φυλακής, έσυρε το μαχαίρι του έτοιμος ν αυτοκτονήσει, νομίζοντας πως είχαν δραπετεύσει οι φυλακισμένοι. Φώναξε τότε ο Παύλος δυνατά λέγοντας: Mην κάνεις κανένα κακό στον εαυτό σου, γιατί είμαστε όλοι εδώ! Tότε αυτός, αφού ζήτησε φώτα, πήδησε μέσα στη φυλακή και κυριευμένος από τρόμο έπεσε μπροστά στον Παύλο και το Σίλα. Kατόπιν τους οδήγησε έξω και είπε: Kύριοι, τι πρέπει να κάνω για να σωθώ; Kι εκείνοι απάντησαν: Πίστεψε στον Kύριο Iησού Xριστό και 2

3 θα σωθείς εσύ και η οικογένειά σου. Στη συνέχεια κήρυξαν το Λόγο του Θεού σ αυτόν και σε όλους εκείνους που ήταν στο σπίτι του. Tους πήρε τότε ο δεσμοφύλακας, την ώρα εκείνη μέσα στη νύχτα, κι έπλυνε τις πληγές τους και βαφτίστηκε αμέσως ο ίδιος κι όλοι οι δικοί του. Kατόπιν τους ανέβασε στο σπίτι του και τους έστρωσε τραπέζι και αναγάλλιασε που με όλη την οικογένειά του είχε πιστέψει στο Θεό. THE GOSPEL READING Sunday of the Blind Man The Gospel According to John 9:1-38 At that time, as Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him. We must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man's eyes with the clay, saying to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" Some said, "It is he"; others said, "No, but he is like him." He said, "I am the man." They said to him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" He answered, "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash'; so I went and washed and received my sight." They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know." They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. The Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes and I washed, and I see." Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was a division among them. So they again said to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight, and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" His parents answered, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself." His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him to be Christ he was to be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, "He is of age, ask him." So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner." He answered, "Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see." They said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He answered them, "I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you too want to become his disciples?" And they reviled him, saying, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from." The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?" And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of man?" He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who speaks to you." He said, "Lord, I believe"; and he worshiped him. ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ: Κυριακή του Τυφλού, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα: Ιωάνν. θ 1-38 Εκείνο τον καιρό, καθώς πήγαινε στο δρόμο του ο Ιησούς, είδε έναν άνθρωπο που είχε γεννηθεί τυφλός. Τον ρώτησαν, λοιπόν, οι μαθητές του: «Διδάσκαλε, ποιος αμάρτησε και γεννήθηκε αυτός τυφλός, ο ίδιος ή οι 3

4 γονείς του;» Ο Ιησούς απάντησε: «Ούτε αυτός αμάρτησε ούτε οι γονείς του, αλλά γεννήθηκε τυφλός για να φανερωθεί η δύναμη των έργων του Θεού πάνω σ αυτόν. Όσο διαρκεί η μέρα, πρέπει να εκτελώ τα έργα εκείνου που με έστειλε. Έρχεται η νύχτα, οπότε κανένας δεν μπορεί να εργάζεται. Όσο είμαι σ αυτόν τον κόσμο, είμαι το φως για τον κόσμο» Όταν τα είπε αυτά ο Ιησούς, έφτυσε κάτω, έφτιαξε πηλό από το φτύμα, άλειψε με τον πηλό τα μάτια του τυφλού και του είπε: «Πήγαινε να νιφτείς στην κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ», που σημαίνει «απεσταλμένος από το Θεό». Ξεκίνησε, λοιπόν, πήγε και νίφτηκε και όταν γύρισε πίσω έβλεπε. Τότε οι γείτονες κι όσοι τον έβλεπαν προηγουμένως ότι ήταν τυφλός, έλεγαν: «Αυτός δεν είναι ο άνθρωπος που καθόταν εδώ και ζητιάνευε;» Μερικοί έλεγαν: «Αυτός είναι», ενώ άλλοι έλεγαν: «Είναι κάποιος που του μοιάζει». Ο ίδιος έλεγε: «Εγώ είμαι». Τότε τον ρωτούσαν: «Πώς λοιπόν άνοίξαν τα μάτια σου;» Εκείνος απάντησε: «Ένας άνθρωπος που τον λένε Ιησού έκανε πηλό, μου άλειψε τα μάτια μου και μου είπε: πήγαινε στην κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ και νίψου. Πήγα λοιπόν εκεί, νίφτηκα και βρήκα το φως μου». Τον ρώτησαν, λοιπόν: «Που είναι ο άνθρωπος εκείνος;» «Δεν ξέρω» τους απάντησε. Τον έφεραν τότε στους Φαρισαίους, τον άνθρωπο που ήταν άλλοτε τυφλός. Η μέρα που έφτιαξε ο Ιησούς τον πηλό και του άνοιξε τα μάτια ήταν Σάββατο. Άρχισαν λοιπόν και οι Φαρισαίοι να τον ρωτούν πάλι πώς απέκτησε το φως του. Αυτός τους απάντησε: «Έβαλε πάνω στα μάτια μου πηλό, νίφτηκα και βλέπω». Μερικοί από τους Φαρισαίους έλεγαν: «Αυτός ο άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να είναι σταλμένος από το Θεό, γιατί δεν τηρεί την αργία του Σαββάτου». Άλλοι όμως έλεγαν: «Πώς μπορεί ένας αμαρτωλός άνθρωπος να κάνει τέτοια σημεία;» Και υπήρχε διχογνωμία ανάμεσά τους. Ρωτούν λοιπόν πάλι τον τυφλό: «Εσύ τι λες γι αυτόν; Πώς εξηγείς ότι σου άνοιξε τα μάτια;» Κι εκείνος τους απάντησε: «Είναι προφήτης». Οι Ιουδαίοι όμως δεν εννοούσαν να πιστέψουν πως αυτός ήταν τυφλός κι απέκτησε το φως του, ώσπου κάλεσαν τους γονείς του ανθρώπου και τους ρώτησαν: «Αυτός είναι ο γιος σας που λέτε ότι γεννήθηκε τυφλός; Πώς, λοιπόν, τώρα βλέπει;» Οι γονείς του τότε αποκρίθηκαν: «Ξέρουμε πως αυτός είναι ο γιος μας κι ότι γεννήθηκε τυφλός πώς όμως τώρα βλέπει, δεν το ξέρουμε, ή ποιος του άνοιξε τα μάτια, εμείς δεν το ξέρουμε. Ρωτήστε τον ίδιο ενήλικος είναι, αυτός μπορεί να μιλήσει για τον εαυτό του». Αυτά είπαν οι γονείς του, από φόβο προς τους Ιουδαίους. Γιατί, οι Ιουδαίοι άρχοντες είχαν συμφωνήσει να αφορίζεται από τη συναγωγή όποιος παραδεχτεί πως ο Ιησούς είναι ο Μεσσίας. Γι αυτό είπαν οι γονείς του, ενήλικος είναι, ρωτήστε τον ίδιο». Κάλεσαν, λοιπόν, για δεύτερη φορά τον άνθρωπο που ήταν τυφλός και του είπαν: «Πες την αλήθεια ενώπιον του Θεού εμείς ξέρουμε ότι ο άνθρωπος αυτός είναι αμαρτωλός». Εκείνος τότε τους απάντησε: «Αν είναι αμαρτωλός, δεν ξέρω ένα ξέρω: πως, ενώ ήμουν τυφλός τώρα βλέπω». Τον ρώτησαν πάλι: «Τι σου έκανε; Πώς σου άνοιξε τα μάτια;» «Σας το είπα κιόλας» τους αποκρίθηκε, «αλλά δεν πειστήκατε γιατί θέλετε να το ξανακούσετε; Μήπως θέλετε και εσείς να γίνετε μαθητές του;» Τον περιγέλασαν τότε και του είπαν: «Εσύ είσαι μαθητής εκείνου εμείς είμαστε μαθητές του Μωυσή. εμείς ξέρουμε πως ο Θεός μίλησε στο Μωυσή, ενώ γι αυτόν δεν ξέρουμε την προέλευση του». Τότε απάντησε ο άνθρωπος και τους είπε: «Εδώ είναι το παράξενο πως εσείς δεν ξέρετε από που είναι ο άνθρωπος, κι όμως αυτός μου άνοιξε τα μάτια. Ξέρουμε πως ο Θεός τους αμαρτωλούς δεν τους ακούει, αλλά αν κάποιος σέβεται και κάνει το θέλημα του, αυτόν τον ακούει. Από τότε που έγινε ο κόσμος δεν ακούστηκε ν ανοίξει κανείς τα μάτια ενός γεννημένου τυφλού. Αν αυτός δεν ήταν από το Θεό δεν θα μπορούσε να κάνει τίποτα». «Εσύ είσαι βουτηγμένος στην αμαρτία από τότε που γεννήθηκες», του αποκρίθηκαν, «και κάνεις τον δάσκαλο σ εμάς;» Και τον πέταξαν έξω. Ο Ιησούς έμαθε ότι τον πέταξαν έξω και, όταν τον βρήκε, του είπε: «Εσύ πιστεύεις στον Υιό του Θεού;» Εκείνος αποκρίθηκε: «Και ποιος είναι αυτός, Κύριε, για να πιστέψω σ αυτόν;» «Μα τον έχεις κιόλας δει», του είπε ο Ιησούς. «Αυτός που μιλάει τώρα μαζί σου, αυτός είναι». «Πιστεύω Κύριε», και τον προσκύνησε. 4

6 Prayers at Church Prayer Upon Entering a Church I will come into Your house in the greatness of Your mercy: and in fear I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before me, that with a clear mind I may glorify You forever, One Divine Power worshiped in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayer upon Leaving a Church Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all people; a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. Prayer at the Icon of Christ We reverence Your spotless icon, O gracious Lord, and ask forgiveness of our transgressions, O Christ our God. Because of Your own good will You ascended the Cross in the flesh, that You might deliver those who You had created from the bondage of the enemy. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of salvation, through the goodness of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed Saints. 10 Ο ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης αναφέρει στην ευαγγελική περικοπή, ένα από τα πολλά θαύματα που επιτέλεσε ο Κύριος ημών Ιησού Χριστός, αυτό της θεραπείας του Τυφλού στην κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ. Ο Κύριος ήρθε στα Ιεροσόλυμα για δεύτερη φορά μαζί με τους μαθητές του, για την μεγάλη εορτή των Ιουδαίων, την εορτή της Σκηνοπηγίας. Σκηνοπηγία (γιορτή της Συγκομιδής ή γιορτή των Σκηνών) ονομαζόταν και ονομάζεται η τελευταία από τις τρεις μεγάλες γιορτές των Ιουδαίων, μετά το Πάσχα και την Πεντηκοστή. Η εορτή της Σκηνοπηγίας είναι διάρκειας επτά ημερών και τελείται προς ευχαριστία για τη συγκομιδή των καρπών και προς ανάμνηση της τεσσαρακονταετούς περιπλάνησης των Εβραίων στην έρημο του Σινά, όπου διέμεναν σε σκηνές. Εκεί στην Ιερουσαλήμ συνάντησε κάποιον άνθρωπο, ο οποίος είχε γεννηθεί τυφλός. Ο Κύριος προσεγγίζει τον εκ γενεητής τυφλό με διπλή διάθεση, όπως συμβαίνει εξάλλου σε όλα τα θαύματά του: Πρώτον να φανερώσει τη θεότητά του, μετά μάλιστα από μία σοβαρή αμφισβήτηση και επιιθετική ενέργεια των Ιουδαίων. Όπως προαναφέρει το ευαγγέλιο: «ήραν λίθους ίνα βάλωσιν επ αυτόν Ιησούς δε εκρύβη και εξήλθεν εκ του ιερού διελθών δια μέσου αυτών και παρήγεν ούτως» (Ιω. 8:59). Δεύτερον, να κανεί αισθητή την παρουσία της Βασιλείας του Θεού, η οποία υπερβαίνει τη φθορά, την ασθένεια και το θάνατο και να δείξει παράλληλα στον κάθε ταλαιπωρημένο άνθρωπο ότι κανείς δεν μπορεί να μας βοηθήσει παρά μόνον ο Θεός. «Ει δε τις υμών λείπεται σοφίας, αιτείτω παρά του διδόντος Θεού πάσιν απλώς και μη ονειδίζοντος, καί δοθήσεται αυτώ» (Ιακ. 1:5) Για το λόγο αυτό και ο Κύριος εργάσθηκε στη συνέχεια με το καταπληκτικό θαύμα του εκ γενετής τυφλού. Στη συνέχεια της περικοπής οι μαθητές αυθόρμητα ρώτησαν τον Ιησού «τις ήμαρτεν, ούτος ή οι γονείς αυτού, ίνα τυφλός γεννηθή;» Ο άνθρωπος πάντοτε ψάχνει να βρει μια αιτία σε κάθε δοκιμασία, αλλά και σε κάθε ασθένεια σωματική ή ψυχική που τον ταλαιπωρεί μέσα στη ζωή. Ειδικότερα όμως στην ερώτηση των μαθητών αυτό που κάνει εντύπωση είναι η αναζήτηση της αιτίας της ασθένειας σε αμαρτία του ιδίου του εκ γενετής τυφλού. Αυτό στηρίζεται σε διδασκαλία των ραββίνων της εποχής, οι οποίοι υποστήριζαν ότι και το έμβρυο δύναται να αμαρτήσει. Η απάντηση του Ιησού όμως θέτει το πρόβλημα σε νέα βάση: «Ούτε ούτος ήμαρτεν ούτε οι γονείς αυτού, αλλ ίνα φανερωθή τα έργα του Θεού εν αυτώ». Ο Ιησούς Χριστός απάντησε στους μαθητές του, ότι κανείς δεν αμάρτησε, αλλά μοναδικός σκοπός είναι να φανερωθεί η δόξα του Θεού. Ο Κύριος είναι κατηγορηματικός, αναφέροντας ότι καθένας είναι υπεύθυνος για τα δικά του αμαρτήματα. Αποτέλεσμα αυτής της ασθένειας είναι η σωτηρία του ανθρώπου. Ο εκ γενετής τυφλός ευεργετήθηκε από το Θεό, γιατί με την τύφλωσή του και τη θεραπεία του από τον Κύριο, δεν ανοίχθηκαν μόνο τα σωματικά του μάτια, αλλά ανοίχθηκαν και τα μάτια της ψυχής του. Ο Ιησούς διακήρυξε, ότι όσο καιρό είναι στη γη πρέπει να εργάζεται για τη δόξα του Θεού, γι αυτό με το θαύμα αυτό της θεραπείας του τυφλού, θέλει να δηλώσει στον άνθρωπο ότι σκοπός της παρουσίας Του στη γη είναι να τον οδηγήσει στο πνευματικό φως, «το φως της αληθείας», να φωτίσει τις ψυχές μας με το δικό Του φως και να μας λυτρώσει από το πνευματικό σκοτάδι και να μας οδηγήσει στη σωτηρία. «Εγώ ειμι το φως του κόσμου ο ακολουθών εμοί ου μη περιπατήση εν τη σκοτία αλλ έξει το φως της ζωής», τονίζει σε άλλη περίπτωση (Ιω. 8:12). Ο Κύριος με αξιοθαύμαστο και παράδοξο τρόπο θεράπευσε τον τυφλό, χρησιμοποιώντας το χώμα και το σάλιο του. Με τα δύο αυτά υλικά ήθελε να φανερώσει, να θυμίσει στους ανθρώπους ότι είμαστε όλοι πλασμένοι από χώμα, αλλά και να φανερώσει τη θεότητά του, ότι ο ίδιος είναι ο Θεός και Δημιουργός μας. Χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρεται ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος, όπως ένας οικοδόμος συμπληρώνει τη μισοτελειωμένη οικία του, έτσι και ο Χριστός κάνει στην περίπτωση του εκ γενετής τυφλού «το σώμα το ημέτερον συγκολλά και αναπληροί». Έπειτα, αφού έφτιαξε πηλό με το σάλιο του, έχρισε με τον πηλό τα μάτια του τυφλού, και θέλοντας να διεγείρει την πίστη του, δεν τον θεράπευσε αμέσως, αλλά τον πρόσταξε να πάει στην κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ. «Ύπαγε νίψαι εις την κολυμβήθραν του Σιλωάμ, ο ερμηνεύεται 10

11 απεσταλμένος. Απήλθεν ουν και ενίψατο, και ήλθε βλέπων». Η κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ, συμβολίζει τον ίδιο το Χριστό, ο οποίος είναι ο απεσταλμένος του Θεού, είναι αυτός που κήρυξαν οι προφήτες και ήλθε στον κόσμο για να οδηγήσει τον αμαρτωλό άνθρωπο στη σωτηρία, χαρίζοντας του τη σωματική και τη ψυχική θεραπεία. Ο Κύριος είναι η πνευματική κολυμβήθρα του Σιλωάμ, μέσω της οποίας καθαρίζονται οι άνθρωποι από τις αμαρτίες τους. Είναι δηλαδή ένας μεγάλος ποταμός όπου καταφεύγουν οι άνθρωποι για να δροσίσουν και καθαρίσουν την ψυχή τους από την αμαρτία. Ο Κύριος για να προσφέρει τη θεραπεία στον άνθρωπο χρειάζεται να έχει πραγματική πίστη, γιατί χωρίς πίστη στο Θεό δεν μπορούμε να δεχθούμε τη θεραπεία του σώματος και της ψυχής. «Συ πιστεύεις εις τον υιόν του Θεού; Και τις εστί, Κύριε, ίνα πιστεύσω εις αυτόν; Πιστεύω, Κύριε και προσεκύνησεν αυτώ». Είναι πραγματικά αξιοθαύμαστη η ομολογία του πρώην τυφλού. Ομολογεί στην αρχή γεμάτος χαρά και ευγνωμοσύνη στους γνωστούς το θαύμα. Ακολούθως, όταν τον οδήγησαν μπροστά στους τυφλωμένους από τον φθόνο και την υποκρισία Φαρισαίους, δεν κάμπτεται από τις απειλές τους και την ασφυκτική τους πίεση, αλλά αντιθέτως με τόλμη τους περιγράφει το θαύμα και ομολογεί χωρίς να φοβάται ότι ο Ιησούς είναι προφήτης. «Συ τι λέγεις περί αυτού Ο δε (ο τυφλος) είπεν ότι προφήτης εστίν». Μετά και τις απειλές των Φαρισαίων, οι οποίοι απαιτούν από τον τυφλό να ομολογήσει ότι είναι πλανεμένος, αυτός χωρίς φόβος επιμένει στην αλήθεια, φεύγοντας μακριά από αυτούς, μένοντας σταθερός στην πίστη και την εν Χριστώ ομολογία του, οποιοδήποτε και αν είναι το τίμημα. Εξάλλου το είπε ο ίδιος ο Κύριος προς τους μαθητές τους και όλους όσοι επρόκειται να πιστέψουν: «Έσεσθε μισούμενοι υπό πάντων διά το όνομά μου». (Λουκ. 21:17) Αυτή η ομολογία πίστεως του εκ γενετής τυφλού μας διδάσκει, ότι πάντοτε πρέπει να ομολογούμε κι εμείς την αλήθεια της πίστεως μας με θάρρος και ενθουσιασμό, όπου και όταν μας το ζητήσει ο Κύριος, ακόμα και αν υποστούμε απειλές και εκφοβισμούς.«πας ος αν ομολογήση εν εμοί έμπροσθεν των ανθρώπων, και ο Υιός του ανθρώπου ομολογήσει εν αυτών έμπροσθεν των αγγέλων του Θεού» (Λουκ. 12:8) και «Πας όστις ομολογήσει εν εμοί έμπροσθεν των ανθρώπων, ομολογήσω καγώ εν αυτώ έμπροσθεν του πατρός μου του εν ουρανοίς» (Ματθ. 10:32). 12 All of Us Are a Generation of People Born Blind : On the Sunday of the Blind Man But why did the Savior heal him in particular? Why was this miracle of God manifest in this particular person, and not in the whole crowd of people standing near him, who were just as misfortunate, injured, or sick? Our contemporaries, blind people who were healed liked the man blind from birth, were subjected to difficult trials, interrogations, and mockery by the Pharisees of this age, and many of us were cut off from the society of our friends and relatives. What happened to the man blind from birth in the Gospels happened also to many of us. But why did the Savior heal him in particular? Why was this miracle of God manifest in this particular person, and not in the whole crowd of people standing near him, who were just as misfortunate, injured, or sick? Two weeks ago we read in the Gospels how the Savior healed the paralytic. That man thirsted and hoped for healing over the course of thirty-eight years, but the man blind from birth did not even have faith, for he did not know who to believe in. He simply could not see the Lord; he did not see the One Who said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam.The Savior revealed His Divinity to precisely this man, because He saw his courageous confession before the enemies of the Truth, the enemies of God. Even so, why was one man healed, and no one else? Why did the Savior pass by the crowd of wretched, poor, crippled, and paralyzed, take one of them, and heal him? Why, out of the millions and billions of those born blind does only a little flock gain its sight spiritually? Why, out of hundreds of different nations living in the world, do only a few of them confess the saving Orthodox Faith? Humanly speaking, it is not fair. Humanly speaking: What made the other blind men any worse than this one? And the other paralytics who lay by the pool of Siloam what made them any worse than that paralytic who was healed? Why are you and me (and each of us knows our own worth: not so very high) any better than the millions of our brothers and sister in this world, who were not enlightened by the light of faith? Even during the Savior s earthly life, when He walked the earth, He chose out of many only those whom He chose. The same thing is happening now. Even out of those nations all together, the Lord chooses only those whom He chooses. So who, after all, are those whom the Savior chooses? Before His sufferings, at the Last Supper, He said to His disciples, I have chosen you out of the world (Jn. 15:19). Later, in his High-Priestly prayer, He says to the Father, Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me (Jn 17:11). Who are they? Wealthy and great people? Of course not. Only the poor? Again, wrong. Amongst God s chosen were people of every economic class. Or perhaps they were people who were rich in something else reason and wisdom? Nothing of the sort. There were wise people who recognized the feebleness of their minds, and there were people entirely unlearned, even holy fools, to whom extraordinary revelations were suddenly sent. Perhaps these were people rich in sins, because the Lord was sent to save sinners? But we know that all are sinful before God. Or maybe these were people rich in faith? Yes, the Lord required faith of people. But He healed the man blind from birth without the latter s faith. He healed the man sick of the palsy, for whom the roof of the house was opened and broken up, and who was lowered down before Him (cf. Mk. 2:4), only because of the faith of those who had brought him. But we also know that the demons believe, and tremble So who does the Lord choose for His inheritance? The Apostle says in one of his epistles, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me(gal. 2:20). These are the ones whom the Savior chooses: those who can deny themselves and become God s dwelling. 12

13 By God s unsearchable care for mankind, only such people are chosen, even though they may be fainthearted like the paralytic, who betrayed the Savior two weeks ago. Even he could say, if only once in his life, See Christ lives in me. He could have become God s temple. Judas was also God s temple at one time! But God will give over to corruption those who corrupt God s temple I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. Anyone who has been chosen by God can say the same. The old man is done away with, and Christ is born in him. However, Christ lives in us in a way that is not at all mere speculation not only in our minds. There are many believing Christians with Christ in their minds: Protestants, Catholics, and those who simply say, yes, I believe in Christ, but I do not belong to the Church. There are people who philosophize about Christ, who make dreamy assumptions about Him, and want to hear about Him; but the life of Christ is not in them. They are outside the Body of Christ, outside the Church of Christ. Therefore, it turns out that many peoples who have heard about Christ nevertheless live outside of His body, outside of His Divinity. Of course, we speak of this not in order to feel proud. The Holy Church speaks of the chosen ones as God s great mercy towards sinful people, but also as a great responsibility. Because the chosen, unfortunately, can also be like Judas; they can become apostates, in whom Christ once lived, but who later betray and crucify their Savior. Our gaining of sight consists in our beginning to see ourselves as full of sins and capable of every evil and betrayal. Our gaining of sight consists in our seeing the world as it really is: lying in evil. Our gaining of sight consists in our beginning to see and appreciate in this world only God s great mercy toward us and all of blind humankind. But if we do not see all of this, it means that we only think we that we see, but in fact we remain in our blindness from which may the Lord deliver us! Christ is Risen! 14 Ο Παύλος και ο Σίλας στη φυλακή Στο σημερινό αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα το οποίο προέρχεται από το βιβλίο των Πράξεων, περιγράφονται γεγονότα σχετικά με την άφιξη και την δράση των Αποστόλων Παύλου, Σίλα και Τιμόθεου εις την Μακεδονία και ιδιαίτερα στη πόλη των Φιλίππων. Μετά τη διαφωνία των αποστόλων Παύλου και Βαρνάβα για το αν θα έπρεπε να συμμετάσχει και ο Μάρκος σ αυτή τη περιοδεία, χωρίζονται οι δυο και ο Παύλος μετά από όραμα μεταβαίνει στην Μακεδονία μαζί με τους Σίλα και Τιμόθεο. Κατά τις μέρες που έμεναν εκεί και ενώ περνούσαν από την πόλη για να μεταβούν σε συγκεκριμένο χώρο, όπου ήταν η συναγωγή για προσευχή και διδασκαλία, μια νεαρή δούλη η οποία είχε πνεύμα Πύθωνος, ακολουθώντάς τους φώναζε «ούτοι οι άνθρωποι δούλοι του Θεού του Υψίστου εισίν, οίτινες καταγγέλουσιν ημίν οδον σωτηρίας». Πύθιος ή Πύθων λεγόταν ο Απόλλωνας, ο οποίος λατρευόταν από τους ειδωλολάτρες ως Θεός και είχε το μαντείο του στους Δελφούς. Από αυτό εξάγουμε το συμπέρασμα ότι η δούλη εκείνη βρισκόταν κάτω από την επίδραση δαιμονίου, το οποίο λεγόταν πνεύμα Πύθωνος και με τις μαντείες της έφερνε μεγάλο κέρδος στους αφέντες της. Αυτή λοιπόν η δούλη ακολουθώντας τους Αποστόλους φώναζε ότι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι είναι δούλοι του Θεού του Υψίστου και μας υποδεικνύουν το δρόμο της σωτηρίας. Πραγματικά είναι απόλυτα σωστή και αληθινή η διακήρυξη αυτή του διαβόλου, ο οποίος και άλλοτε μπροστά στον Χριστό είπε: «Τι εμοί και σοι, Ιησού Υιέ του Θεού του Υψίστου; ορκίζω σε μη με βασανίσεις». Στο περιστατικό αυτό φαίνεται καθαρά η πονηρία του διαβόλου, ο οποίος χρησιμοποιεί δυο μεθόδους για να παραπλανήσει τους πιστούς. Η πρώτη είναι ότι μετασχηματίζεται σε καλό άγγελο, διαλαλώντας τα πιο πάνω για τους Αποστόλους και αυτό το κάνει για να παραπλανήσει το λαό, ότι αναγνωρίζει τους αποστόλους ώστε μετά την αναχώρησή τους, να διεκδικήσει οπαδούς και να τους κρατήσει στη δική του εξουσία. Η δεύτερη μέθοδος είναι όταν ο διάβολος χρησιμοποιεί ανθρώπους που διαθέτουν κακία και προκαλούν κακό σε άλλους ανθρώπους. Στην προκειμένη περίπτωση έχουμε τους κυρίους της δαιμονιζομένης δούλης, οι οποίοι συνέλαβαν τον Παύλο και τον Σίλα και τους κατηγόρησαν στους στρατηγούς ως ταραχοποιούς. Εκείνοι στη συνέχεια αφού τους έδειραν, τους έκλεισαν στη φυλακή για να τους εξοντώσουν. Δηλαδή τη μια φορά τους επαινεί και την άλλη τους κατηγορεί! Αυτό είναι συνεχώς το έργο του διαβόλου. Μετέρχεται πολλά τεχνάσματα για να διαστρέφει τις καλές διαθέσεις των ανθρώπων. Αυτό το γεγονός λοιπόν με την δαιμονισμένη επαναλαμβανόταν για αρκετές μέρες με αποτέλεσμα ο Παύλος ενοχλημένος, στρέφοντας το πρόσωπό του προς αυτή διέταξε το δαιμόνιο «Παραγγέλω σοι εν τω ονόματι Ιησού Χριστού, ίνα εξέλθης απ αυτής». Και πράγματι εκπληρώνοντας τον λόγο του Κυρίου που προφήτευσε για όσους τον πιστέψουν πραγματικά «εν τω ονόματι μου δαιμόνια εκβαλούσιν», ευθύς εξήλθε και ελευθερώθηκε η παιδίσκη εκείνη από την δαιμονική τυραννία. Μαζί όμως με το δαιμόνιο που έφυγε, έπαψαν εντελώς και οι μαντείες της νέας, διότι δεν ήταν αυτή που «μάντευε» αλλά μέσω αυτής ο διάβολος. Αυτό είναι ακριβώς που συμβαίνει και στις μέρες μας με όλους αυτούς τους «επιστήμονες» της μαντικής τέχνης που προβλέπουν με διάφορες μεθόδους το μέλλον συνεργαζόμενοι με τους δαίμονες, πλουτίζοντας έτσι εκμεταλλευόμενοι την αφέλεια πολλών. Βλέποντας λοιπόν οι κύριοι της ότι σταμάτησε η πηγή των κερδών και του πλουτισμού τους, αφού έπαψε πλέον να μαντεύει, τους συκοφάντησαν και πέτυχαν την φυλάκισή τους με τη δικαιολογία ότι αναστατώνουν την πόλη φέρνοντας ξένες συνήθειες. Πράγματι ο Χριστιανισμός παρουσιάστηκε στην ιστορία ως ένας νέος τρόπος ζωής, σαφώς αντίθετος προς τον τότε υπάρχοντα τρόπο ζωής. Ο Χριστιανισμός δεν μπορεί να συμβιβαστεί ποτέ με τον παλαιό τρόπο ζωής που εμπνέεται από τον διάβολο. Ο Θεός είναι φως ενώ ο σατανάς σκότος. Ο σατανάς είναι νεκρό πνεύμα που μεταδίδει τη νέκρωση σε όσους τον πλησιάζουν, ενώ ο Θεός είναι ζωή και μεταδίδει στους ανθρώπους την «όντως ζωή». Έτσι ακριβώς συνέβηκε με τους αποστόλους οι οποίοι φυλακισμένοι όπως ήταν στην 14

15 εσωτέρα φυλακή, κτυπημένοι και δεμένοι, καθόλου δεν εμποδίζονταν από το να δοξολογούν τον Θεό και ο Θεός, «ο ευλογών τους ευλογούντας Αυτόν» με δεύτερο θαύμα, με σεισμό, ανοίγει την φυλακή και ελευθερώνει από τα δεσμά τους δούλους Του. Αντιθέτως ο δεσμοφύλακας, ο δούλος του διαβόλου, μόλις αντιλαμβάνεται το κακό που τον βρήκε ετοιμάζει το μαχαίρι του για να αυτοκτονήσει. Όμως ακόμα και μέσα στο σκοτάδι της φυλακής θα νικήσει το φως του Αναστημένου Χριστού και δια της αγάπης του Αποστόλου Παύλου ο δεσμοφύλακας θα σωθεί και θα ζητήσει να διδαχτεί και στη συνέχεια να βαπτιστεί αυτός και όλος ο οίκος του «και παραλαβών αυτούς εκείνη την ώρα της νυχτός, έλουσε από των πληγών και εβαπτίσθη αυτός και οι αυτού πάντες παραχρήμα». Το σημερινό αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα διαλαλεί πως η χάρις του Θεού ενεργεί σαν αστραπή. Το μόνο που χρειάζεται είναι ο άνθρωπος ελεύθερα να δώσει την προαίρεσή του και τα υπόλοιπα είναι έργο του παντοδύναμου Θεού. 17 Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, 1969 We Should Approach a Person As a Mystery We heard today the story of the man born blind. We do not know from experience what physical blindness is, but we can imagine how this man was walled in himself, how all the world around him existed only as a distant sound, something he could not picture, imagine. He was a prisoner within his own body. He could live by imaginations, he could invent a world around himself, he could by touch and by hearing approximate what really was around him; but the total, full reality could only escape him. We are not physically blind, but how many of us are locked in themselves! Who of us can say that he is so open that he can perceive all the world in its width, but also in its depth? We meet people, and we see them with our eyes; but seldom it happens that beyond the outer shape, features, clothes, how often does it happen that we see something of the depth of the person? How seldom it is that we look into a person s eyes and go deep in understanding! We are surrounded by people and every person is unique to God, but are people unique to us? Are not people that surround us just people, who have names, surnames, nicknames, whom we can recognize by their outer looks but whom we do not know at any depth? This is our condition: we are blind, we are deaf, we are insensitive to the outer world, and yet, we are called to read meanings. When we meet a person, we should approach this person as a mystery, that is as something which we can discover only by a deep communion, by entering into a relationship, perhaps silent, perhaps in words, but so deep that we can know one another not quite as God knows us, but in the light of God that enlightens all and each of us. And more than this: we can do, each within his own power, within his own gifts, what Christ did: He opened the eyes of this man. What did this man see? The first thing he saw was the face of the Incarnate Son of God, in other words, he saw love incarnate. When his eyes met the eyes of Christ, he met God s compassion, God s tenderness, God s earnest concern and understanding. In the same way could so many people begin to see, if by meeting us they meet people in whose eyes, on whose face they could see the shining of earnest, sober love, of a love that is not sentimental but is seeing, a love that can see and understand. And then, how much could we be to people around us a revelation of all the meanings that this world holds and contains through art, through beauty, through science, through all the means by which beauty is perceived and proclaimed among human beings. But are we doing this? Is our concern to convey the width, and the depth, the beauty and the meaning of things to every person whom we meet? Are we not rather concerned with receiving than with giving? And yet, Saint Paul who knew what it meant to receive and to give, said, It is a more blessed thing to give than to receive. And yet how much had he received! He had received the knowledge of God in his own experience; he had received teaching, and knowledge, and experience within the Old Testament, and then Christ revealed Himself to him: what did he not receive! And yet, he exulted more in giving than in receiving, because he did not want to be the owner of all the richness that had come his way; he wanted to share it, to give it, to set aglow and afire other lives than his own. Let us reflect on how rich, how richly endowed we are, how much it was given us to see, and to hear. And let us realize at the same time how tragically walled we are within ourselves unless we break this wall in order to give, as generously, as richly, as abundantly as we were given. And then indeed, our joy will be fulfilled according to Christ s promise. And no one, nothing will ever be able to take it away from us. Amen + METROPOLITAN ANTHONY OF SOUROZH 17

21 Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is risen! As we approach Mothers Day this year on Sunday, May 13, I can t help but think back to the Mothers Days in Thessaloniki. There, we celebrated mothers on the great feast of Ypapanti, the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, on February 2. That is the day when God s Mother, the Panagia, brought the Christ child, 40 days after His birth, into the Temple in Jerusalem, in accordance with God s Law. What better mother is there than the Panagia, the mother of us all? What better care can a mother offer her child than to obey God s Law and raise that child up to respect and love Him? This year, on Mothers Day, let us do the same by coming with our family to the Divine Liturgy on May 13, where we can worship and thank God for His many blessings, and ask Him to continue to keep our families healthy and whole by His grace. To all the children, please be sure to send your mothers forward at the end so that we can hand them a beautiful fresh carnation and thank them for all their hard work, love, and sacrifice to both their families and the church. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion. Please let parents with their babies and the elderly approach first.
