3 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE : St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 3:9-17 Brethren, we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are. ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ :Κυριακή Θ Επιστολών, Αποστ. ανάγνωσμα: Α Κορ. γ 9-17 Αδελφοί, είμαστε συνεργάτες στην υπηρεσία του Θεού κι εσείς το χωράφι του Θεού, το οικοδόμημα του Θεού. Σύμφωνα με το ειδικό χάρισμα που μου έδωσε ο Θεός, ως έμπειρος αρχιμάστορας, έβαλα εγώ το θεμέλιο. Άλλος τώρα χτίζει πάνω σ αυτό. Ο καθένας όμως ας προσέχει πως χτίζει. Γιατί κανένας δεν μπορεί να βάλει άλλο θεμέλιο εκτός από αυτό που υπάρχει και που είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Τώρα, αν κάποιοι χτίζουν πάνω σ αυτό το θεμέλιο με χρυσάφι ή ασήμι ή πολύτιμα πετράδια, με ξυλεία, χορτάρι ή άχυρο, η δουλειά του καθενός θα φανεί θα τη φέρει στο φως η ημέρα της κρίσεως. Γιατί η ημέρα αυτή θα φανερωθεί με τρόπο πύρινο, και η ποιότητα του έργου καθενός θα δοκιμαστεί από τη φωτιά. Αν το έργο που έχτισε κάποιος αντέξει, αυτός θα λάβει μισθό αν όμως το έργο του καταστραφεί από τη φωτιά, αυτός θα χάσει την αμοιβή του ο ίδιος όμως θα σωθεί, όπως ένας που περνάει μέσα από τις φλόγες. Δεν ξέρετε πως είστε ναός του Θεού κι ότι το Πνεύμα του κατοικεί ανάμεσά σας; Αν κάποιος, λοιπόν, με τις διαιρέσεις καταστρέφει το ναό του Θεού, αυτόν θα τον αφανίσει ο Θεός. Γιατί ο ναός του Θεού είναι άγιος, κι ο ναός αυτός είστε εσείς. THE GOSPEL: The Gospel According to Matthew 14:22-34 At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they entered the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 3

4 ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή Θ Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα: Μτθ. ιδ Εκείνο τον καιρό, ο Ιησούς υποχρέωσε τους μαθητές να μπουν στο καΐκι και να πάνε να τον περιμένουν στην απέναντι όχθη, ωσότου αυτός διαλύσει τα πλήθη. Κι αφού διέλυσε τα πλήθη, ανέβηκε μόνος του στο βουνό να προσευχηθεί. Όταν βράδιασε ήταν μόνος του εκεί. Το καΐκι στο μεταξύ βρισκόταν κιόλας στη μέση της λίμνης και το παίδευαν τα κύματα, γιατί ήταν αντίθετος ο άνεμος. Κατά τα ξημερώματα, ήρθε ο Ιησούς κοντά τους περπατώντας πάνω στη λίμνη. Οι μαθητές, όταν τον είδαν να περπατάει πάνω στη λίμνη, τρόμαξαν έλεγαν πως είναι φάντασμα κι έβαλαν τις φωνές από το φόβο τους. Αμέσως όμως ο Ιησούς τους μίλησε και τους είπε: «Έχετε θάρρος, εγώ είμαι, μη φοβάστε». Ο Πέτρος του αποκρίθηκε: «Κύριε, αν είσαι εσύ, δώσε μου εντολή να έρθω κοντά σου περπατώντας στα νερά». Κι εκείνος του είπε: «Έλα». Κατέβηκε τότε από το πλοίο ο Πέτρος κι άρχισε να περπατάει πάνω στα νερά για να πάει στον Ιησού. Βλέποντας όμως τον ισχυρό άνεμο φοβήθηκε, κι άρχισε να καταποντίζεται έβαλε τότε τις φωνές: «Κύριε, σώσε με!». Αμέσως ο Ιησούς άπλωσε το χέρι, τον έπιασε και του λέει: «Ολιγόπιστε, γιατί σ έπιασε η αμφιβολία;». Και μόλις ανέβηκαν στο καΐκι κόπασε ο άνεμος. Κι όσοι ήταν στο καΐκι ήρθαν και τον προσκύνησαν λέγοντας: «Αληθινά, είσαι ο Υιός του Θεού!». Αφού διασχίσανε τη λίμνη, ήρθαν στην περιοχή της Γεννησαρέτ. Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva: contact Katina Kollias or directly as she prepares the Sunday Kolyva Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Koliva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 6 Την προηγούμενη Κυριακή, ακούσαμε στο ιερό ευαγγέλιο, την διήγηση του θαύματος του χορτασμού των πεντακισχιλίων (χωρίς τις γυναίκες και τα παιδιά) με τον πολλαπλασιασμό των πέντε άρτων και των δύο ιχθύων. Στη συνέχεια ο Κύριος, προκειμένου να αποτρέψει τις ενθουσιώδεις εκδηλώσεις του πλήθους οι οποίοι δεν μπορούσαν να τον αποχωριστούν και επιθυμούσαν μάλιστα να τον ανακηρύξουν βασιλιά τους, αναγκάζει τους μαθητές του (γιατί δεν ήθελαν ούτε στιγμή να αποχωριστούν από αυτόν) να ανέβουν στο πλοίο και να περάσουν στην απέναντι πλευρά της λίμνης Γεννησαρέτ, αναμένοντάς τον, μέχρι Εκείνος να διαλύσει τα πλήθη. Αμέσως μετά, μας διηγείται σήμερα ο ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος, ο Κύριος ανέβηκε στο όρος μόνος για να προσευχηθεί όπου και έμεινε όλο το βράδυ. Επιλέγει ερημικό τόπο να προσευχηθεί. Σημειώνει ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος πως, ο Κύριος φεύγει αδιάκοπα στις ερημιές όπου εκεί περνά πολλές φορές τις νύκτες του με προσευχή, τονίζοντας έτσι σε εμάς την αναγκαιότητα της προσευχής ιδιαίτερα της ατομικής ή προσωπικής προσευχής αλλά και την γαλήνη, ησυχία που έχουν τα μέρη αυτά. Αφότου οι μαθητές ξεκίνησαν με το πλοίο το βράδυ, η θάλασσα ήταν ήρεμη. Όταν άλλαξε η φορά των ανέμων όμως, τα κύματα έγιναν τεράστια, το πλοίο άρχισε να κλυδωνίζεται κι οι μαθητές φοβήθηκαν. Ο Κύριος βέβαια τα προγνώριζε όλα αυτά. Άφησε σκόπιμα όμως τους μα-θητές του να εκτεθούν στον κίνδυνο, ώστε να νιώσουν πόσο αβοήθητοι κι αδύναμοι ήταν χωρίς Εκείνον και να στερεωθούν στην πίστη τους, να θυμηθούν μια προηγούμενη καταιγίδα στη θάλασσα, όταν ο Κύριος βρισκόταν μαζί τους κι εκείνοι τον ξύπνησαν έντρο-μοι, φωνάζοντας: «Κύριε, σώσον ημάς, απολλύμεθα» (Ματθ. η 25). Όταν είχαν φτάσει στο έσχατο σημείο της απόγνωσης, ο Κύριος έσπευσε, περπατώντας πάνω στα κύματα, να τους βοηθήσει και να τους ενθαρρύνει. Αυτό σημειώνει ο ευαγγελιστής συνέβη «τετάρτη φυλακή της νυκτός». Οι Ιουδαίοι, όπως κι οι κυβερνήτες τους, οι Ρωμαίοι, είχαν χωρίσει τη νύχτα σε τέσσερις φυλακές (στρατιωτική σκοπιά), που η καθεμιά τους διαρκούσε τρεις ώρες. Ο Κύριος εμφανίστηκε στους μαθητές του την τέταρτη φυλακή της νύχτας, δηλαδή λίγο προτού χαράξει, μεταξύ 3 6 το πρωί. Οι μαθητές από την άλλη, διακρίνοντας μέσα στο σκοτάδι κάποιο σαν φάντασμα, να περπατά πάνω στα κύματα και βλέποντας το να πλησιάζει, κυριεύονται από φόβο ώστε αρχίζουν να βγάζουν κραυγές τρόμου. Τότε ακριβώς που η αγωνία τους κορυφώνεται, ακούγεται η φωνή του Κυρίου: «Θαρσείτε, εγώ ειμι μη φοβείσθε». Σε αυτές τις πέντε λέξεις, βλέπουμε κατά τρόπο ζωντανό και ανάγλυφο από την μια την αδυναμία και μετριότητα του ανθρώπου και από την άλλη την αγάπη και Παντοδυναμία του Θεού απέναντι στο δημιούργημά του. Τότε του ανταπάντησε ο Πέτρος, ο οποίος φοβήθηκε προφανώς μήπως κάποιο δαιμόνιο τους κοροΐδευε: «Κύριε, εάν όντως είσαι εσύ κάλεσέ με να έλθω προς το μέρος σου, επάνω στα νερά». Ο Απόστολος Πέτρος δείχνει το μέγεθος της πίστης του προς τον Κύριο. Εάν τον καλούσε ο Κύριος και στην φωτιά θα το έπραττε. Βέβαια, ακόμα δεν ήταν πλήρως έτοιμος. Όμως έδειξε πως μέσα του έκαιγε η φλόγα της πίστεως και περίμενε μια απλή κλήση, μια απλή προσταγή για να κάνει κάτι που κανένας απλός άνθρωπος δεν θα έπραττε. Και ο Κύριος γνωρίζοντας τη πίστη του, δεν του λέει πολλά, παρά μόνο μία απλή αλλά τόσο σημαντική λέξη:»ελθέ!». Καθημερινά, ο Χριστός μας απευθύνει το κάλεσμα, πλην όμως ελεύθερα και αβίαστα, να τον ακολουθήσουμε: «Όστις θέλει, οπίσω μου ελθείν» (Ματθ. ιστ 24). Τα εμπόδια όμως που φράσσει 6

7 συνεχώς μπροστά μας ο αντίδικος διάβολος δεν μας αφήνουν. Στη ζωή του ανθρώπου υπάρχουν δύο ειδών πειρασμοί. Υπάρχουν πειρασμοί που αναφέρονται στην πίστη. Ο άνθρωπος ολιγοπιστεί απέναντι στο Θεό, έχει λογισμούς βλασφημίας, δεν παραδέχεται τη διδασκαλία της Εκκλησίας, αρνείται τα μυστήρια και τη σωστική χάρη τους. Πολεμάτε από την πορνεία, την υπερηφάνεια και γενικά από τα μεγάλα πάθη. Σε αυτούς τους πειρασμούς ο άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να τα βγάλει πέρα μόνος του. Μόνο με τη βοήθεια του Θεού μπορεί να χειριστεί και να νικήσει τις καταστάσεις αυτές. Υπάρχουν και οι πειρασμοί που μας ωφελούν. π.χ οι πειρασμοί της στέρησης των υλικών αγαθών, η συκοφαντία σε βάρος μας, οι ονειδισμοί των οικείων και των φίλων μας, οι διαφόρων ειδών ασθένειες, ανίατες αλλά και άλλες που μας ταλαιπωρούν για λίγο και φεύγουν. Όλοι αυτοί οι πειρασμοί δεν μας κάνουν κακό, όταν τους αντιμετωπίζουμε με το ευαγγελικό πνεύμα και τη δύναμη της προσευχής και της πίστης. Την ώρα λοιπόν του καταποντισμού, ο Χριστός επεμβαίνει σωστικά αρπάζοντας τον Απόστολο Πέτρο από το χέρι. Παράλληλα είναι επικριτικός γιατί, ενώ ο Πέτρος επικαλείται τη βοήθεια Του, την ίδια στιγμή εκδηλώνει ολιγοπιστία. «Ολιγόπιστε! Εις τι εδίστασας»; Ολιγόπιστε, γιατι σ έπιασε η αμφιβολία;. Αγνόησε και υποτίμησε ουσιαστικά τόσο την παρουσία όσο και τις δυνατότητες του διδασκάλου του. Πρόταξε την ανθρώπινη λογική και υποτίμησε την πίστη. Αυτή την ολιγοπιστία του Πέτρου, εκδηλώνουμε σχεδόν καθημερινά και εμείς σαν άνθρωποι. Οι δυσκολίες της ζωής και τα καθημερινά προβλήματα, μας καταποντίζουν συνεχώς, ένεκα της ολιγοπιστίας μας. Στις δύσκολες εκείνες στιγμές παρά την ολιγοπιστία μας, καλούμαστε να παρακαλέσουμε με πίστη τον Κύριο και να είμαστε σίγουροι ότι θα εισακούσει της προσευχής μας και επέμβει σωστικά προς επιτέλεση του σωστού χειρισμού της κατάστασης, του θέματος και ωφέλεια πνευματική. 8 Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ August6th The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on August 6. The feast commemorates the transfiguration or metamorphosis of Christ on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John. The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9: Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ. This reference to the booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. The blessing of grapes, as well as other fruits and vegetables on this day is the most beautiful and adequate sign of the final transfiguration of all things in Christ. It signifies the ultimate flowering and fruitfulness of all creation in the paradise of God s unending Kingdom of Life where all will he transformed by the glory of the Lord. This is an ancient Christian custom. The first week of August, on the sixth of August, the farmers use to gather the early fruits of their summer harvest (grapes, figs etc.) and to present them in the Church to be blessed and to give them for free to congregation. These fruits are called the beginnings. HYMNS OF THE FEAST Apolytikion You were transfigured on the Mount, Christ God revealing Your glory to Your disciples, insofar as they could comprehend. Illuminate us sinners also with Your everlasting light, through the intercessions of the Theotokos. Giver of light, glory to You. 9 Dormition Fast And Paraklesis Services For the first fourteen days of August during each year, the Church enters into a strict fast period in honor of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary. St. John of Damascus, pointed out that when the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Mother of God and gave birth to Christ, the Redeemer of Mankind, she became the mother of mankind. We call the Virgin Mary Theotokos, which means The Birth-Giver or the Bearer of God. This is the highest title that can be bestowed upon any member of the human race. The Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, was blessed amongst women, and she was chosen to bear the Savior of our souls. We, therefore, as Orthodox Christians, consider her to be the Queen of all the saints and the angels. Knowing that she holds such a high place in the Kingdom of Heaven and that she is eternally present at the throne of God interceding for mankind, we, as good Orthodox Christians, must pray for her love, guidance, and protection. We must never forget to ask for her intercessions in times of sickness and danger, and we must constantly thank her for her care and her prayers in our behalf. Every year the Orthodox Church sets aside the first fourteen days of August in honor of the Virgin Mary. This fast period is climaxed on August 15th to celebrate the Great Feast of the Dormition (Falling-Asleep) of the Theotokos. During this fourteen day fast period, the Orthodox Church prescribes that the Paraclesis Service be held in honor of the Mother of God. The word paraclesis has two different meanings: the first is consolation, from which the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, or Consoler ; the second is supplication or petition. The Service of the Paraclesis to the Theotokos consists of hymns of supplication to obtain consolation and courage. The theme of these Paraclesis Services centers around the petition.. Most Holy Mother of God, save us. If you have a problem or if something is burdening your soul, if you feel spiritually uneasy and if you are not at peace with yourself and with those around you, then, you should come to the Church during the first fifteen days of August and ask for the intercessions of the Mother of God. Even if you are fortunate enough to be one of those very few who are at peace with themselves and with God, then those blessed ones should come to these services and thank God and His Blessed Mother for the blessings that they have bestowed upon you and your family. This is also a good time to participate in the sacrament of Confession ************************************************************************************** WEEKDAYS are Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, wine, and oil. SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS are Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, and fowl. The one exception to these general rules is that the Great Feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord, God, and Saviour Jesus Christ (August 6), which always falls during the Dormition Fast, is celebrated as a Fish, Wine, and Oil Day. On this great feastday, the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, and fowl. Notes: Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father. 9

Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. Make it up Alternatively, when you get back from your time away, give a little more in the weeks that follow in order to make up for the lost weeks. Use your envelopes Are you a check-writing person? Then simply fill in advance your offering envelopes with your weekly gift. If you have a check in every envelope, then on any given Sunday you need only to bring that day s envelope and whatever earlier Sunday envelopes are there.
