Ανάγνωσμα: Α Κορ. α Αδελφοί, σας ζητώ, στο όνομα του Κυρίου μας Ιησού Χριστού, να είστε όλοι σύμφωνοι μεταξύ σας και να μην υπάρχουν ανάμεσα σας διαιρέσεις, αλλά να είστε ενωμένοι, με μια σκέψη και με ενα φρόνημα. Αυτό το γράφω, αδελφοί μου, γιατί με πληροφόρησαν για σας άνθρωποι της Χλόης οτι έρχεστε σε προστριβές μεταξύ σας. Θέλω να πω οτι ο καθένας σας λέει κατί διαφορετικό. Ο ένας λέει: «Εγώ είμαι του Παύλου», ο άλλος: «Εγώ είμαι του Α- πολλώ», ένας άλλος: «Εγώ είμαι του Κηφά» και κάποιος άλλος: «Εγώ είμαι του Χριστού». Διαμοιράστηκε, λοιπόν, ο Χριστός; Μήπως είναι ο Παύλος που πέθανε πάνω στον σταυρό για να σας σώσει; Η μήπως στο όνομα του Παύλου έχετε βαφτιστεί; Ευχαριστώ τον Θεό που δεν βάφτισα κανένα σας εκτός απο τον Κρίσπο και τον Γαϊο. Έτσι δεν μπορεί να πει κανείς πως τον βάφτισα στο δικό μου όνομα. Ναι, βέβαια, βάφτισα και την οικογένεια του Στεφανά. Εκτός απ αυτούς, όμως, δεν θυμάμαι να βάφτισα κανέναν άλλο. Η αποστολή που μου όρισε ο Χριστός δεν ήταν να βαφτίζω, αλλά να κηρύττω το ευαγγέλιο, χωρίς σοφά και περίτεχνα λόγια, ώστε ο θάνατος του Ιησού Χριστού στον σταυρό να μη χάσει το περιεχόμενο του. EPISTLE:.The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17 BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή H Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα Ματθ. 14: Εκείνο τον καιρό, είδε ο Ιησούς πολύν κόσμο και τους σπλαχνίστηκε, και γιάτρεψε τους αρρώστους των. Όταν έπεσε το δειλινό, τον πλησίασαν οι μαθητές του και του είπαν: «Ο τόπος είναι ερημικός, και η ώρα είναι περασμένη. Διώξε τον κόσμο να πάνε στα χωριά για ν αγοράσουν φαγητά να φάνε». Ο Ιησούς τους είπε: «Δεν υπάρχει λόγος να φύγουν, δώστε τους εσείς να φάνε». Κι αυτοί του λένε: «Δεν έχουμε εδώ παρά πέντε ψωμιά και δύο ψάρια». Κι αυτός ειπε: «Φέρτε μού τα εδώ». Κι αφού πρόσταξε τον κόσμο να καθίσει για φαγητό πάνω στο χορτάρι, πήρε τα πέντε ψωμιά και τα δύο ψάρια, έστρεψε το βλέμμα του στον ουρανό, τα ευλόγησε, έκοψε τα ψωμιά σε κομμάτια και τα έδωσε στους μαθητές κι οι μαθητές στο πλήθος. Έφαγαν 2

3 όλοι και χόρτασαν. Και μάζεψαν τα περισσεύματα από τα κομμάτια, δώδεκα κοφίνια γεμάτα. Αυτοί αφού έφαγαν ήταν περίπου πέντε χιλιάδες άντρες, χωρίς τις γυναίκες και τα παιδιά. Αμέσως ύστερα ο Ιησούς υποχρέωσε τους μαθητές να μπούν στο καΐκι και να πάνε να τον περιμένουν στην απέναντι όχθη, ωσότου αυτός διαλύσει τα πλήθη. GOSPEL: 8th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 14:14-22 At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. 6 Message from Metropolitan Alexios My Beloved Ones, During this summer period, it is a blessing to know that while many are on vacation, your Metropolis of Atlanta family is always working, especially with our young people. We are nearing the end of the fourth week of St. Stephen s Summer Camp, with one more week remaining. Each week we have been blessed to have around 100 campers and 20 staff members, including clergy and various counselors, who provide the means for our young people to have an experience that is both spiritually fruitful, as well as one that is full of fellowship. We work very hard to create opportunities, situations, and activities which allow our young people to grow closer to our Creator. For when we build up a relationship with God, then we allow ourselves to achieve a greater and more powerful sense of spiritual understanding. This is demonstrated in this Sunday s Gospel, where we see our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,...healing every disease and every infirmity among the people (Matthew 9:35). The Evangelist makes a point to stress that this was not simply limited to healing the blind, but that Christ also had power over the demons. The ability to cast out demons can happen when an individual truly devotes him or herself to God s Word; when he or she truly lives out His Commandments, and strives to apply God s Will to their own life. Of course this is something that sounds, not only very difficult, but even above and beyond the abilities and logically oriented understanding of today s human beings. In essence, however, it is not so impossible; rather, it is simply a decision that we must make to give ourselves over to a lifestyle that is totally Godly oriented. This lifestyle itself was given to humanity by our Creator. Therefore, if we truly live out this Godly oriented life, we as humans will be able to move past our weaknesses, and, as I stated before, we will truly be able to grow in a closer connection to our Heavenly Father, which is the goal of all Orthodox Christians. Therefore, I pray that we all continue to teach our young people what is Orthodox. When they return home from St. Stephen s Summer Camp, and they are filled with the desire to pray in the mornings; before meals; in the evenings; or during any occasion, I hope that you, their parents and grandparents, will continue to support this lifestyle which we give to them. Encourage them to hold fast to these practices, so that they will not simply feel close to God for only a week, but for all time. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta 6

7 Call for Volunteers! Have you worked in a business office? Have you operated your own business? St. George needs you! Beginning with the new ecclesiastic year, we will have an improved system to greet visitors to the office and church and accommodate them. We will have a reception area in the Kontos Event Center lobby to help people schedule events, appointments, fill out forms, get information about the church and ministries, and we will also provide access to the church upon request for prayer, tours, or bookstore shopping. Please volunteer for an area which interests you and in which you are skilled. The schedule will be flexible. We will have 2 hour and 4 hour shifts available. Please contact Tina Wilson at to choose your preferred time. The goal is to have volunteer training in mid August and have volunteers in place shortly after that. Your church really needs you to contribute your talent. Whenever, you give time and talent, the church saves money and makes you a valued steward of St. George. 8 Η σημερινή Ευαγγελική περικοπή μας διηγείται το θαύμα του πολλαπλασιασμού των πέντε άρτων και των δύο ψαριών από τα οποία έφαγαν πέντε χιλιάδες άνθρωποι και χόρτασαν. Είδε λέει, ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος, ο Ιησούς πολύ κόσμο να τον ακολουθεί και τον σπλαχνίσθηκε και θεράπευσε τους αρρώστους τους. Γιατί αυτός είναι κατά τον προφήτη Ησαία που σήκωσε στους ώμους του τον πόνο μας και υπέμεινε τις ασθένειές μας. Από τον αριθμό των ανθρώπων που βρίσκονταν μαζί με τον Ιησού Χριστό για να ακούσουν το κήρυγμα του συμπεραίνουμε πόσο πολύ είχαν επηρεαστεί από το λόγο του και τα θαύματα τα οποία επιτελούσε. Βρισκόμενοι σε τόπο ερημικό δεν προέβλεψαν ότι η διδασκαλία Του θα διαρκούσε αρκετή ώρα και δεν είχαν φροντίσει για το δείπνο τους, ώσπου κάποια στιγμή οι μαθητές πλησιάζουν τον διδάσκοντα Κύριο για να του υπενθυμίσουν ότι πρέπει να διακόψει, για να πάει ο κόσμος να προμηθευτεί τροφή διότι εκείνοι δεν διέθεταν την υπερβολική αυτή ποσότητα, ώστε να φτάσει για όλους, δεδομένου ότι ήταν πέντε χιλιάδες άνδρες εκτός των γυναικών και των παιδιών και διέθεταν μόνο πέντε ψωμιά και δύο ψάρια (Ματθ. ιδ, 14). Με την ανθρώπινη λογική εδώ θα περιμέναμε τον Ιησού Χριστό να προτρέψει τον όχλο να διαλυθεί, έτσι ώστε να μπορέσουν να κατέβουν στα κοντινά χωριά να αγοράσουν την τροφή που χρειάζονταν. Εντυπωσιακή όμως είναι η στάση του Χριστού στην προτροπή των μαθητών του να απολύσει τους όχλους. Ο Κύριος τους απαντά ότι δεν χρειάζεται να φύγουν, αλλά δώστε τους εσείς να φάνε. Οι μαθητές εξεπλάγησαν γιατί πώς ήταν δυνατό να θρέψουν τόσες χιλιάδες ανθρώπους από το τίποτε. Ανατρέπει την σκέψη τους ο Διδάσκαλος. Τους θέλει ενεργούς στην λύση του προβλήματος. Θα έπρεπε με άλλα λόγια οι μαθητές να κάνουν το πρώτο βήμα και να δώσουν ότι είχαν, και στην συνέχεια να έχουν το θαυμαστό αποτέλεσμα του χορτασμού (Ι. Χρυσοστόμου, «Λόγος εις τους πέντε άρτους και τους δύο ιχθύας»). Η Θεία Ευχαριστία είναι ο ουράνιος άρτος των ανθρώπων. Ακόμη μπορεί οι Όμως αυτό που είναι αδύνατο για τους ανθρώπους είναι δυνατό για τον Θεό. Ο Ιησούς στρέφει τα μάτια στον ουρανό, προσευχόμενος, ευλογεί τις υπάρχουσες τροφές και θρέφει ολόκληρο το πλήθος των ανθρώπων αφήνοντας και πολλά περισσεύματα. Σχολιάζει σχετικά ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος: «Ο τόπος μπορεί να είναι έρημος, όμως υ τρέφει την οικουμένη. Η ώρα έχει περάσει, αλλά μαζί σας συνομιλεί Εκείνος, που δεν υπόκειται στο χρόνο». Στους μαθητές Του, ανάμεσα τους αδύνατο για τους ανθρώπους είναι δυνατό για τον Θεό. Εκείνος πο δίνει τους άρτους για να τους μοιράσουν στο πλήθος, για να θυμούνται μόνιμα και συνεχώς το θαύμα. Ακόμη δίνει τους άρτους, για να μην νομισθεί πως κατά φαντασία θαυματούργησε. Τα περισσεύματα είναι δείγμα ατράνταχτης αλήθειας. Το θαύμα των πέντε άρτων είναι σύμβολο και της Θείας Ευχαριστίας άρτοι να συμβολίζουν και τα πολλά χαρίσματα του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ο Κύριος τρέφει το λαό του και την εκκλησία Του με τον εαυτό Του. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι ο ζωοποιός Αρτος. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός με το θαύμα του πολλαπλασιασμού των άρτων μας φανερώνει πως δεν ενδιαφέρθηκε μόνο για την ψυχή του ανθρώπου αλλά μερίμνησε και για το σώμα του. Τις υλικές ανάγκες του. Ο Χριστός δεν περιφρονεί τα υλικά αγαθά, αλλά 8

9 τα ιεραρχεί. Πρώτα είναι η βρώση η μένουσα ( Ιωαν. 6,27) και μετά η πρόσκαιρη. Η εκκλησία ενδιαφέρεται το ίδιο για τις υλικές ανάγκες του ανθρώπου, αλλά θέτει όρια στις απαιτήσεις μας. Πρώτα δίδαξε ο Ιησούς Χριστός τον όχλο και μετά τους έδωσε ψωμί να φάνε. Οφείλουμε εμείς οι άνθρωποι να αγωνιζόμαστε να κρατήσουμε το σύνδεσμο με το Χριστό που είναι ο ζωοποιός άρτος και όχι η επιθυμία να αποκτήσουμε περισσότερα εφήμερα αγαθά. Σίγουρα δεν παραμένουμε μόνο στο έργο της διδασκαλίας του Ευαγγελίου αλλά και στη χρήση των αγαθών, αποφεύγοντας τη σπατάλη και κινούμενοι στην βοήθεια των άλλων από το περίσσευμα μας. Να μην λησμονούμε τον σοφό λόγο που ο Απόστολος Παύλος γράφει προς τους Χριστιανούς της Κορίνθου «Το δικό μας περίσσευμα πρέπει να καλύπτει το υστέρημα των άλλων» (Β Κορ. η,14). Αμήν. Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 13 «I Believe In God But I Don't Go To Church» By +Archimandrite Paul Papadopoulos We often hear the above phrase from acquaintances, friends and relatives, so our discussion will focus a little more on spiritual matters. The basic argument of people who say that they believe in God yet do not go to church to participate in the Mysteries of our Orthodox Church, is that they are bothered by certain things, such as the luxuriousness of churches, obnoxious priests and chanters, the language is ancient (they don't understand it), the microphones, the lights, the candle offering (where they give money for a candle), the time the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, etc. The excuses are certainly a lot when someone DOES NOT WANT to live according to how the Church says. Unfortunately these people consider themselves outside the Church since they do not accept the basic components of the life in Christ, which is the participation of a Christian in the Mysteries of the Church. These people are not Christians, at least not Orthodox, because while they (supposedly) believe, they do not follow any word of Christ. The issue of course is that most baptized Christians do not know who Christ is or what the Church is, and what Christ and the Church offer to people. Thus they do not attend church, because essentially they do not know what they are missing, and they do not know what the sacramental life can offer. The Church, with all Her Mysteries, transforms us, sanctifies us, and brings us into communion with God. Our participation in the Mysteries of the Church is the key to this personal resurrection of ours. The Church does not exist merely to take the position of medicine and exhaust all its capabilities, as some wrongly treat it. The Church exists to lead people, the faithful, to the Love, the Light and the Life in Christ through the Mysteries. To say you believe in God is easy, but to believe in God in an Orthodox manner and to do corresponding works is difficult, though not impossible. If a person really wants to know Christ, they can do this through the sacramental life offered by the Church. If you want to fool yourself you can claim to achieve this on your own. However, I do not know anyone that has been sanctified outside the Church. (The crazy thing is that some people consider as saints people like Elder Paisios, Elder Porphyrios, etc., yet they do not accept their lives. Twisted people!) All this happens for just one reason: Egoism. When each person believes themselves to be a better interpreter of the Scriptures, and they believe the God-bearing Fathers of the Church are beneath them, and they believe they are smarter, more worthy and holier than the old "religionists" as they call them, and when they believe they have no need to repent of any of their sins (!), and they could be saved by themselves (whatever that means to them), then this text will probably not trouble them at all, rather it has been a long time since they fell into the abyss of self-love and delusion. The biggest obstacle that prevents contemporary man from reaching communion with God is precisely this: they are trying to know Him the wrong way, using the wrong means, outside the Church. They dismiss the mystery of love and remain willfully grounded in a sterile faith which in a best case scenario simply means "acknowledging the existence of God" and not trusting and surrendering to Divine Providence. 13

15 We celebrate the Dormition of the Mother of God after this fasting period. By tradition, a Paraklesis (Small Service of Supplication to the Theotokos), sometimes called the Office of Consolation to the Most Holy Theotokos is sung daily during the Dormition Fast, August It is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. It is addressed to the Most Holy Theotokos whose intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms, hymns, and litanies. The general guidelines for the Dormition Fast are as follows: WEEKDAYS are Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish, and wine (and oil). SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS and Transfiguration: fish and wine permitted (and oil). We still abstain from meat, dairy 1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. 2. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 3.
