3 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE : The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Γιατί γίναμε θέαμα για τον κόσμο, για αγγέλους και γι ανθρώπους. Εμείς παρουσιαζόμαστε μωροί για χάρη του Χριστού, ενώ εσείς είστε σοφοί χάρη στο Χριστό εμείς είμαστε αδύναμοι, ενώ εσείς είστε δυνατοί εμείς είμαστε περιφρονημένοι, ενώ εσείς είστε τιμημένοι! Ως αυτή την ώρα πεινάμε, διψάμε, γυρνάμε με κουρέλια, ξυλοδαρμένοι, από τόπο σε τόπο χωρίς σπίτι, και μοχθούμε να ζήσουμε δουλεύοντας με τα ίδια μας τα χέρια. Στους εμπαιγμούς απαντάμε με καλά λόγια, στους διωγμούς με υπομονή, στις συκοφαντίες με λόγια φιλικά. Καταντήσαμε σαν τα σκουπίδια όλου του κόσμου, ως αυτή την ώρα θεωρούμαστε τα αποβράσματα της κοινωνίας. Δε σας τα γράφω αυτά για να σας κάνω να ντραπείτε, αλλά για να σας συμβουλέψω όπως ο πατέρας τα αγαπημένα του παιδιά. Γιατί κι αν ακόμα έχετε χιλιάδες δασκάλους στη ζωή σας με το Χριστό, δεν έχετε πολλούς πατέρες αλλά μόνον ένα. Στη σωτήρια οικονομία του Ιησού Χριστού, εγώ σαν πατέρας σας γέννησα με το κήρυγμα του ευαγγελίου. Σας ζητώ λοιπόν να μου μοιάσετε. THE GOSPEL: 10th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή Ι Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. ανάγνωσμα: Μτθ. ιζ Όταν έφτασαν στο πλήθος, τον πλησίασε ένας άνθρωπος, γονάτισε μπροστά του και του είπε: «Κύριε, σπλαχνίσου το γιο μου, γιατί είναι επιληπτικός και υποφέρει πολλές φορές μάλιστα πέφτει στη φωτιά και στο νερό. Τον έφερα στους μαθητές σου, αλλά δεν μπόρεσαν να τον θεραπεύσουν». Ο Ιησούς απάντησε: «Γενιά άπιστη και διεφθαρμένη, ως πότε θα είμαι μαζί σας; Ως πότε θα σας ανέχομαι; Φέρτε τον μου εδώ». Ο Ιησούς επιτίμησε το δαιμόνιο, και βγήκε απ αυτόν από εκείνη την ώρα το παιδί γιατρεύτηκε. Πήγαν τότε ιδιαιτέρως στον Ιησού οι μαθητές και τον ρώτησαν: «Γιατί εμείς δεν μπορέσαμε να το βγάλουμε;» Κι ο Ιησούς τους είπε: «Εξαιτίας της απιστίας σας» «σας βεβαιώνω πως, αν έχετε πίστη έστω και σαν κόκκο σιναπιού, θα λέτε σ αυτό το βουνό, πήγαινε από δω εκεί, και θα πηγαίνει και κανένα πράγμα δε θα είναι αδύνατο για σας. Αυτό το δαιμονικό γένος δε βγαίνει παρά μόνο με προσευχή και νηστεία». Ενώ οι μαθητές περιέρχονταν τη Γαλιλαία, τους είπε ο Ιησούς: «Ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου πρόκειται να παραδοθεί σε χέρια ανθρώπων θα τον θανατώσουν, και την τρίτη μέρα θα αναστηθεί». 3

5 Divine Liturgy offerings Today s Divine Liturgy offerings are given by the Herodotus family in loving memory of +Meropi Herodotus Please contact the Church office and speak with Antonia at If you would like donate the items for Divine Liturgy. The offerings include: 10 prosfora, the communion wine, the oil, the incense and charcoal. All items used during the prothesis in preparation for the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion. Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva: contact Katina Kollias or directly as she prepares the Sunday Kolyva Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Koliva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 7 Temptations in our Life Christ performed many miracles. He performed miracles on people, such as when He cured the paralytic at Capernaum, the ten lepers, the son of the widow of Nain and so on. He also performed miracles which showed us facets of His personality, such as the miracles of the Transfiguration, the Resurrection and the Ascension. Finally, He performed miracles on inanimate material, such as when He multiplied the five loaves and cursed the barren fig-tree. In today s Gospel reading, He calms the waters of the sea and makes the wind drop. The absence of Christ After the multiplication of the five loaves, He told his disciples to get into the boat and go before him to the other side (Matth. 14, 22). When He had dismissed the crowds, He went up onto the mountain to pray. In the course of His prayer, the boat got into difficulties because the sea became very choppy and the disciples were beaten by the waves. In the early hours of the morning, Christ appeared and calmed the turbulent waters. His disciples had become used to His presence. He wanted to make them realize that they had to be closely connected to Him. The more anxious they became, the more they desired the presence of Christ, writes Saint John Chrysostom. A storm arose, the wind was against them, hours passed and there was no help to be had. The Lord wished to see how patient they were. He wanted to get them to understand how to bear what befell them with courage as one of the saints writes. The storm at sea was training for the disciples in patience, endurance and prayer. Whenever Christ was about to grant people an abundance of Grace, He always prepared them beforehand through temptations. The Apostles were to preach to the whole world, they were going to perform miracles, Christ would give them the power to work signs and supernatural events, which is why He first trained them through temptations, so that they wouldn t despair when they encountered difficulties and adversities. Christ s appearance in the early hours of the morning dispersed all their fears and also calmed the sea. Temptations in our life There are two kinds of temptation in our life. One kind is temptations to do with faith. People have little faith in God, have thoughts of blasphemy, don t accept the teaching of the Church, deny the sacraments and are of two minds. They re also attacked by fornication, pride and the great passions in general. We can t fight against these temptations properly on our own. It s only with God s help that we can combat the situations just mentioned. When such temptations enter our lives, we say Jesus prayer: Do not lead us into temptation (Matth. 6, 13). These temptations separate us from God. We must expel immediately anything which separates us from God. There are, though, other trials that are of benefit to us. For example, when we re deprived of material goods, when we re slandered, when our friends and family mock us, when our superiors are unsympathetic, when we suffer from incurable or debilitating illness, or other sicknesses which temporarily afflict us and so on. All of these trials aren t bad for us so long as we face them in the spirit of the Gospel and with the power of prayer. Blessed are those who have withstood temptation, for having been tried, they will receive the crown of life (Jas. 1, 12) writes the Apostle. He also says that we should be joyful when we fall into temptation. These trials are good for us, indeed, greatly so, according to Abba Isaac the Syrian. People who wish to strive and live a life of virtue are not alone in their struggle. Their burden is shouldered by God and it becomes light. We have to believe that God won t abandon us. It s no good believing in Christ if we don t have any confidence in His person. We have unshakeable faith that God will intervene in our life and, in the end, will smooth over our trials, provided we don t complain or grumble, but have patience. God has given us spiritual weapons to combat temptations and to prevent us from falling into sloth and despair. Let us keep our attention fixed firmly on Christ, so that we don t drown in the billows of the daily temptations of our life. 7

8 «Κύριε, ἐλέησόν μου τόν υἱόν» Οι σημερινοί γονείς οδηγούν τα παιδιά τους στον Χριστό; Ὁ Κύριος, ἀγαπητοί μου ἀδελφοί, μέ τούς τρεῖς Μαθητές του Πέτρο, Ἰάκωβο καί Ἰωάννη, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἀποτελοῦσαν τό στενό κύκλο τῶν Μαθητῶν, εὑρισκόταν πάνω στό ὄρος Θαβώρ, ὅπου ἔλαβε χώρα ἡ θεία Μεταμόρφωσή Του, που εορτάσαμε σύμφωνα με το τυπικό της Εκκλησίας μας την 6η του Αυγούστου, ενώ η ακριβής χρονική στιγμή του γεγονότος αυτού είναι ενδιαμέσως της Αγίας Τεσσαρακοστής. Η μεγάλη αυτή εορτή της Μεταμορφώσεως του Κυρίου, μετετέθη σοφώς από τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας για να μπορεί να εορτάζετε πανηγυρικώς από τους πιστούς. Το Ευαγγέλιο εκείνης της ημέρας, της εορτής της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος, μας θύμισε το ιστορικό αυτό γεγονός, όπου έλαμψε όλος ο τόπος και εμφανίστηκε ο ολοφώτιστος ο Ιησούς με τους Προφήτες Του, τον Ηλία και τον Μωυσή, ενώ την ίδια ημέρα η εκκλησιαστική παράδοση έχει εντάξει στο τυπικό της, την ευλόγηση από τους ιερείς του πρώτου καρπού της αμπέλου με την "ευχή της σταφυλής" στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, που θα είδατε και στον δικό μας Ναό, όσοι συμμετείχατε στον εορτασμό, ενώ μετά το "Δι' ευχών..." μοιράστηκαν και πάλι εκ των ιερέων μαζί με το αντίδωρο τα ευλογημένα αυτά πρώτα σταφύλια της χρονιάς, τα οποία και φέρνουν οι ίδιοι οι πιστοί από το πρωΐ και ευλογημένα πια τα επιστρέφουν στα σπιτικά τους για το μεσημεριανό τραπέζι.(αυτή είναι η ομορφιά της Ιεράς Παραδόσεως της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας μας, του ίδιου του λαού του Θεού δηλαδή, όπου τα πάντα θέλει να γίνονται με την ευλογία του Ιδρυτού της) Η σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή από το κατά Ματθαίον ευαγγέλιο που θα ακούσουμε την Κυριακή της 28ης Αυγούστου 2016, είναι η συνέχεια αυτής της ιστορίας. Τήν ἴδια ὥρα δηλαδή της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος Χριστού, αλλά ἐκεῖ ὅπου εὑρίσκοντο οἱ άλλοι ἐννέα Μαθητές, κάποιος πονεμένος πατέρας ὁδήγησε κοντά τους τό ἄρρωστο καί δαιμονόπληκτο παιδί του καί ζήτησε νά διώξουν τό δαιμόνιο καί νά τό ἐλευθερώσουν. Οἱ Μαθητές ὅμως ἀφοῦ δοκίμασαν δέν τά κατάφεραν. Ἔτσι ἀκολούθησε μιά σύγχυση. Ὁ πατέρας ἔμενε ἀπογοητευμένος καί οἱ Γραμματεῖς, οἱ ὁποῖοι εὑρίσκοντο πλησίον ἄρχισαν νά κάνουν σχόλια σέ βάρος τῶν Μαθητῶν. Ἐκείνη τήν ὥρα ἐμφανίσθηκε ὁ Κύριος κατερχόμενος ἀπό τό βουνό καί συνοδευόμενος ἀπό τούς τρεῖς Μαθητές, για να αποκαταστήσει πλήρως την τάξη, να θεραπεύσει τον νέο και να ψέξει τους μαθητές του για την έλλειψη πίστης που τους χαρακτήριζε. Μποροῦμε νά ποῦμε ὅτι τόν σύγχρονο σταυρό τῆς κοινωνίας, τῆς οἰκογένειας καί ἑκάστου ἐνδιαφερομένου γιά τή νεολαία, ἀποτελοῦν οἱ διάφοροι πειρασμοί καί ποικίλοι κίνδυνοι, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἐπαπειλοῦν καί καθημερινά "δέρνουν" τήν νέα γενιά. Ὁ νέος τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἀποτελοῦσε ἕνα θῦμα τοῦ δαίμονος. Ἡ δαιμονοπληξία ἔδερνε καθημερινά τόν ἴδιο, τυραννοῦσε ἀλύπητα τήν οἰκογένειά του καί παρεῖχε προβλήματα πολλά στό κοντινό καί μακρυνό περιβάλλον του. Ἡ πολυκέφαλη ἁμαρτία βλέπουμε, ὡς ἄλλη Λερναία Ὕδρα, να χτυπά με μανία τά σύγχρονα νιάτα, να τά ρίχνει συνεχῶς στό βάραθρο, να ἀνοίγει πληγές στή ζωή τῆς οἰκογένειας, να διαλύει τήν εὐτυχία τῶν ἀνθρώπων καί ἰδιαίτερα τῶν νέων και τέλος να ἀφήνει πίσω της ἐρείπια. Μπορεῖ κάποιος νά ἰσχυρισθεῖ ὅτι ἡ ζωή ἑνός μέρους τῆς νεολαίας μας εἶναι ἀπογοητευτική καί δέν διαφέρει ἀπό τίς ἀντιδράσεις τοῦ δαιμονόπληκτου νέου της ευαγγελικής περικοπής που θα ακούσουμε την Κυριακή αυτή από τα χείλη των ιερέων μας σε όλη την Ορθόδοξη οικουμένη. Τά ναρκωτικά, ἡ μέθη, τά σαρκικά ἁμαρτήματα, η προσκόλληση στα υλικά αγαθά, οἱ ἀπάτες και οι αυταπάτες της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας μας, ἡ τεμπελιά, η έλλειψη ενδιαφέροντος για οτιδήποτε θα μπορούσε να θρέφει υγιώς την ψυχή τους καί πολλά ἄλλα καταστρέφουν καθημερινά τά θεμέλια τῆς ζωῆς τους. Αυτά είναι τα όπλα που χρησιμοποιεί ο σατανάς για να υποδουλώσει τα παιδιά μας και πιστέψτε με είναι όπλα δυνατά γιατί προσφέρονται με πολύ σαγήνη και 8

9 μαεστρία από αυτόν. Ὁ πατέρας τῆς περικοπῆς ἔστω καί μέ τήν ἀτελῆ πίστη του, ὁδήγησε τό παιδί του κοντά στό Χριστό. Ὁ Κύριος ἐλευθέρωσε τό νέο ἀπό τίς ἐπιδράσεις τοῦ ἐχθροῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τοῦ Σατανᾶ καί παρέδωσε τό νέο ὑγιή στόν πατέρα του. Οἱ γονεῖς πρέπει νά γνωρίζουν ὅτι στό δύσκολο ἀγώνα τους νά ἀναθρέψουν τά παιδιά τους καί νά τά ἀποκαταστήσουν στή ζωή, «ἐν παιδείᾳ καί νουθεσίᾳ Κυρίου» (Ἐφεσ. στ 4) δέν εἶναι μόνοι, αλλά δίπλα τους είναι ορθάνοιχτη η αγκαλιά της Εκκλησίας του Χριστού μας, απλά πρέπει να την διαβούν για να απολαύσουν την προστασία της, να σώσουν τα παιδιά τους. Ὁ Χριστός με την Εκκλησία Του απευθυνόμενος σε όλους τους γονείς, καλεῖ καί λέγει: «ἄφετε τά παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με, καί μή κωλύετε αὐτά» (Μαρκ. ι 14). Ἡ Ορθόδοξη θρησκευτικότητα πρέπει νά ἀποτελεῖ ἀπαραίτητο στοιχεῖο στήν καλλιέργεια τοῦ ἐσωτερικοῦ κόσμου τῶν παιδιῶν από τις οικογένειες τους, από τον πατέρα και την μητέρα, αλλά και από τον παππού και την γιαγιά, κατόπιν δε από το σχολείο, τώρα θα μου πείτε από ποιο σχολείο την στιγμή που για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία της Παιδείας στην χώρα μας, την Ορθόδοξη κατά τα άλλα Ελλάδα, αποδομούνται τα ιερά και τα όσια, τα σύμβολα της χώρας μας και οι αξίες των πατέρων μας, που μάθαμε τόσα χρόνια, και καθ' όλη αυτήν την διάρκεια της ζωής του νέου, παράλληλα με όλα τα άλλα, από την Εκκλησία μας, που θα του δώσει μαζί με την ευλογία της και τα χαρακτηριστικά εκείνα και τα όπλα για να νικήσει στην σώμα με σώμα μάχη που θα δώσει αργότερα με το κακό στην ενηλικίωση του. Μόνο ἔτσι, και σε απόλυτη συνεργασία όλων των εμπλεκομένων στην διαμόρφωση του χαρακτήρα του παιδιού μας, θά ἔχει ἡ κοινωνία γερούς καί ἀκραιφνεῖς στυλοβάτες καί μελλοντικούς καλούς καί ἐνάρετους ἀναμορφωτές τῆς ζωῆς της, οἱ ὁποῖοι θά ὁδηγήσουν στήν σωτηρία καί θα εμφυσήσουν το χριστιανικό ήθος και στα δικά τους παιδιά και εις τον αιώνα του αιώνος... Μόνο έτσι θα σωθεί η νεότητα της Ελλάδος και το μέλλον της χώρας μας γενικότερα από τις διαρκείς επιθέσεις των οπαδών της παγκοσμιοποίησης και ομαδοποίησης των όμορφων ανθρώπων που αποτελούν το ηρωϊκό έθνος μας, σε ένα αποτυχημένο όπως αποδείχθηκε κατασκεύασμα, που τώρα, μέσα από όλα αυτά που συμβαίνουν γύρω μας, το βλέπουμε καθαρά, πως οδηγεί στην καταστροφή, οδηγεί στην τρομοκρατία και στην παντελή έλλειψη Δημοκρατίας. Όμως, όπως πολύ πρόσφατα είδαμε στις τηλεοράσεις μας, οδηγεί και σε μανιασμένες μειοψηφίες αντεξουσιαστικών μαζών, κυρίως αποπροσανατολισμένα και επικίνδυνα νεαρά παιδιά, που τελικά, υπό την καθοδήγηση αοράτων και περίεργων δυνάμεων, όπως βλέπετε μας εξουσιάζουν πια, και κατατρώγουν την αξιοπρέπεια της δικής μας πλειοψηφίας, και μάλιστα είναι υπό την κρατική ασυλία, ενός φοβισμένου κράτους που αποδομώντας στο διάβα του οτιδήποτε καλό απορρέει από την Ορθόδοξη πίστη μας και την διδασκαλία του Χριστού μας, αναρωτιέται τώρα γιατί εξελισσόμαστε, μέρα με την μέρα, σε καταστρεπτικά αγρίμια και κακέκτυπα των Ευρωπαίων, και όχι μόνο, "φίλων" μας. Ας μην εφησυχάζουμε λοιπόν, τα παιδιά μας κινδυνεύουν έξω από την Εκκλησία και εμείς είμαστε οι υπεύθυνοι γιαυτό. Ανοίξτε τους τον δρόμο μέσα από τα σκουπίδια που τους εμποδίζουν για το όμορφο μέλλον τους και ελάτε και εσείς μαζί για να τα χαρείτε μαζί μας να προοδεύουν μέσα στην αγκαλιά της και στην προστασία των χιλιάδων των Αγίων της. 9

10 10th Sunday of Matthew And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him. And Jesus answered, Faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why could we not cast it out? He said to them, Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day. And they were greatly distressed. It is clear from the Gospel reading that the boy s illness was not of the body but of the spirit and that this had repercussions on his bodily health. It wasn t epilepsy but demonic possession. His father called him a lunatic [i.e. under the influence of the moon ], but the Evangelist writes that a demon departed from him. He wanted to say that the illness wasn t what people often call lunacy, but an attack from the evil spirit. This is confirmed by Christ s own words when he says that this kind[of demon] cannot be expelled except through prayer and fasting. The boy s father believed that his son had a bodily sickness, but the Gospel confirms that it was more than this. It may be that when Christ said: Faithless and perverse generation, it was this erroneous view that He was condemning. God really is saddened when people are deliberately obtuse, when they don t want to see what s actually happening to them. In another instance in the Gospels, it says that Christ grieved for the Pharisees for the hardness of their heart [Mk. 3, 5]. This is the disbelief and perfidy which really saddens God: Faithless and perverse generation. I fear, however, that our own generation may be the same. Perhaps we don t want to recognize the extent of the evil which is afflicting us and thus deliberately deceive ourselves. Despite the fact that we don t believe in God, that we re all superstitious and gullible, we still deny the existence of the spirit of evil and we attribute whatever happens to us to natural causes. We think it beneath us to consider that we might be in thrall to the evil one, that we might be more ill than we want to believe, or that our cure doesn t depend on human intervention but on God Himself. The times in which we live are so critical and our experiences so tragic that we won t be saved unless God intervenes for us. Many of those who hear these words will think they re exaggerated, without foundation and foolish; that we re in no danger; that everything will turn out fine, so long as we believe in ourselves. All that means is that we aren t aware of the nature of our sickness, nor do we know the identity of the Healer Who can cure us. We re more ill than we know and this sickness isn t of the body but of the spirit. As Scripture tells us the whole world lies under the power of the evil one, [1 Jn. 5, 19]. It s a bold and brave person who would talk today about demonic influence on thoughts and in the heart. People aren t willing to take such talk seriously, when they re dubious even when they hear about God. Our hearts and minds have been made arid by unbelief. People today have cast God out of their lives and, in His stead, have placed themselves. It may, in fact, not be too much to wonder whether the age in which we live is the era of apostasy concerning which Saint Paul writes in his second Epistle to the Thessalonians. At that time, the lawless one will be revealed, the son of perdition. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. So, is this time the era in which we live? Because people have certainly rebelled and have become insolent towards God, and are working to destroy everything that has so far been considered holy and sacred. They ve put themselves in God s place and demand to be recognized as gods. Within such a climate, when even talking about God is difficult, it s harder still to speak about the spirit of deceit, about demonic influence on our 10

11 thoughts and heart. But this, too, is a ploy on the part of the evil one: to put into our minds the idea that he doesn t exist and that any talk of him is to be considered outmoded and laughable*. But we can t get round the fact that the whole of Scripture talks about the spirit of evil who deceives the whole world. If what I m saying now were simply my own words, I wouldn t expect anybody to set any great store by it, but it isn t; it s the word of God, Holy Scripture. Just as Scripture talks about God and people, so it also speaks about the evil one. Not as a second god, the god of evil, but as an archangel who fell from heaven and at an opportune time [Lk. 4, 13] opposed himself to the work of God, which is for our salvation. Without the devil- not as the personification of evil, but as a personal, spiritual being- the fall, the incarnation and the whole mystery of the divine dispensation are inexplicable. Today s sermon seems pessimistic. But it s something which the Church should be preaching, with a sense of responsibility. When the disciples reported to Him that they were unable to expel the evil spirit from the sick boy, Jesus Christ said: this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting. Who s going to say this, who s going to preach this in the modern world? In a world that doesn t hunger and thirst after righteousness, a world which is perishing with hunger in the midst of a surfeit of material goods. In the face of the grave dangers which are threatening us and the failure of all human means to provide us with better days and a way of being saved, all that remains is to listen to the preaching of the Church, which constantly calls us to repentance. We re not saved by either our wisdom or our strength, because we re sick not in the body but in the spirit. So let us pray, let us fast; in brief, let us repent. Amen. 12 Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ August6th The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on August 6. The feast commemorates the transfiguration or metamorphosis of Christ on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John. The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9: Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ. This reference to the booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. The blessing of grapes, as well as other fruits and vegetables on this day is the most beautiful and adequate sign of the final transfiguration of all things in Christ. It signifies the ultimate flowering and fruitfulness of all creation in the paradise of God s unending Kingdom of Life where all will he transformed by the glory of the Lord. This is an ancient Christian custom. The first week of August, on the sixth of August, the farmers use to gather the early fruits of their summer harvest (grapes, figs etc.) and to present them in the Church to be blessed and to give them for free to congregation. 13 Dormition Fast And Paraklesis Services For the first fourteen days of August during each year, the Church enters into a strict fast period in honor of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary. St. John of Damascus, pointed out that when the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Mother of God and gave birth to Christ, the Redeemer of Mankind, she became the mother of mankind. We call the Virgin Mary Theotokos, which means The Birth-Giver or the Bearer of God. This is the highest title that can be bestowed upon any member of the human race. The Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, was blessed amongst women, and she was chosen to bear the Savior of our souls. We, therefore, as Orthodox Christians, consider her to be the Queen of all the saints and the angels. Knowing that she holds such a high place in the Kingdom of Heaven and that she is eternally present at the throne of God interceding for mankind, we, as good Orthodox Christians, must pray for her love, guidance, and protection. We must never forget to ask for her intercessions in times of sickness and danger, and we must constantly thank her for her care and her prayers in our behalf. Every year the Orthodox Church sets aside the first fourteen days of August in honor of the Virgin Mary. This fast period is climaxed on August 15th to celebrate the Great Feast of the Dormition (Falling-Asleep) of the Theotokos. During this fourteen day fast period, the Orthodox Church prescribes that the Paraclesis Service be held in honor of the Mother of God. The word paraclesis has two different meanings: the first is consolation, from which the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, or Consoler ; the second is supplication or petition. The Service of the Paraclesis to the Theotokos consists of hymns of supplication to obtain consolation and courage. The theme of these Paraclesis Services centers around the petition.. Most Holy Mother of God, save us. If you have a problem or if something is burdening your soul, if you feel spiritually uneasy and if you are not at peace with yourself and with those around you, then, you should come to the Church during the first fifteen days of August and ask for the intercessions of the Mother of God. Even if you are fortunate enough to be one of those very few who are at peace with themselves and with God, then those blessed ones should come to these services and thank God and His Blessed Mother for the blessings that they have bestowed upon you and your family. This is also a good time to participate in the sacrament of Confession ************************************************************************************** WEEKDAYS are Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, wine, and oil. SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS are Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, and fowl. The one exception to these general rules is that the Great Feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord, God, and Saviour Jesus Christ (August 6), which always falls during the Dormition Fast, is celebrated as a Fish, Wine, and Oil Day. On this great feastday, the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, and fowl. Notes: Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father. 13

14 Το σημερινό ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα, προέρχεται από το δέκατο έβδομο κεφάλαιο του Ευαγγελιστή Ματθαίου και περιγράφει το θαύμα της θεραπείας του σεληνιαζομένου νέου. Το περιστατικό αυτό χρονικά, έλαβε χώρα αμέσως μετά το γεγονός της Μεταμορφώσεως του Χριστού στο όρος Θαβώρ το οποίο θα εορτάσει η Εκκλησία μας αύριο. Όταν κατέβηκε ο Ιησούς από το όρος μαζί με τους τρείς προκρίτους μαθητές Πέτρο, Ιάκωβο και Ιωάννη, βρήκαν εκεί το πλήθος συγκεντρωμένο γύρω από τους άλλους αποστόλους, καθώς και το άρρωστο παιδί. Αφού δε βρήκε τον Χρι-στό, ο δύστυχος πατέρας έφερε το παιδί στους μαθητές του, εκείνοι όμως δεν μπόρεσαν να βοηθήσουν «Και προσήνεγκα αυτόν τοις μαθηταίς σου και ουκ ηδυνήθησαν αυτόν θεραπεύσαι». Δεν είχαν τη δύναμη να το κάνουν αυτό για τρεις λόγους: α. επειδή οι ίδιοι δεν είχαν αρκετή πίστη β. επειδή κι ο πατέρας του παιδιού δεν είχε πίστη και γ. επειδή η πίστη έλειπε κι από τους γραμματείς που παρευρίσκονταν εκεί και συζητούσαν με τους μα-θητές, όπως αναφέρει ο Ευαγγελιστής Μάρκος ο οποίος παραθέτει περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες για το θαύμα αυτό στο ένατο κεφάλαιο του Ευαγγελίου του. Η απιστία του πατέρα τού παιδιού γίνεται φανερή από τα λόγια που είπε στο Χριστό. Δε μίλησε όπως ο λεπρός, που είπε: «Κύριε, εάν θέλης δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι» (Ματθ. η 2).Τότε μίλησε ένας άνθρωπος που είχε δυνατή πίστη. Δε μίλησε όπως ο Ιάειρος, όταν κάλεσε το Χριστό για ν αναστήσει την κόρη του: «ελθών επίθες επ αυτήν την χείρά σου και ζήσεται» (Ματθ. θ 18). Κι εδώ μίλησε ένας άνθρωπος με δυνατή πίστη. Ακόμη μίλησε πολύ λιγότερο και από τον εκατόνταρχο στην Καπερναούμ, που ήταν άρρωστος ο δούλος του: «μόνον ειπέ λόγω και ιαθήσεται ο παις μου» (Ματθ. η 8). Εκεί μίλησε η πολύ μεγάλη πίστη. Εκείνη όμως ασφαλώς που είχε τη μεγαλύτερη πίστη ήταν η αιμορροούσα γυναίκα που δεν είπε τίποτα. Παρά μόνο σύρθηκε στα πόδια τού Χριστού και άγγιξε το ιμάτιό του. Ο πατέρας του παιδιού δε μίλησε σαν κι αυτούς. Αυτός είπε στο Χριστό: «εί τι δύνασαι, βοήθησον ημίν» (Μάρκ. θ 22). Ο Χριστός στη συνέχεια, ταλανίζει την απιστία των συμπατριωτών του και συνεπώς και του πατέρα του παιδιού, αλλά και των μαθητών του: «Ω γενεά άπιστος και διεστραμμένη! Εώς πότε έσομαι μεθ υμών; Εώς πότε ανέξομαι υμών;». Η γενεά εκείνη, της οποίας αρχηγοί ήταν οι Γραμματείς και οι Φαρισαίοι, το σαπισμένο και δυσώδες δηλ. κατεστημένο του Ισραήλ, ήταν όχι μόνο άπιστη, αλλά και διεστραμμένη διότι ενώ έβλεπαν τα μοναδικά θαύματα που επιτελούσε ο Ιησούς, επέμεναν στην απιστία τους και περισσότερο βλασφημούσαν, αποδίδοντας την Θεϊκή δύναμη σε δαιμονική ενέργεια. Ο Κύριος λοιπόν με την άμετρη δύναμή του, αλλά και την άρρητη φιλανθρωπία του θεραπεύει τον νέο και απαλλάσσει «το έργο των χειρών του» από την τυραννία του διαβόλου, επεμβαίνει τη στιγμή που το δαιμόνιο για ακόμη μια φορά επιτίθεται στο δυστυχισμένο νέο ρίχνοντας και κτυπώντας τον στο έδαφος. Και ενώ οι μαθητές «ουκ ηδυνήθησαν αυτόν θεραπεύεσαι», ο Ιησούς το «επιτίμησε» και έφυγε από το νέο και έγινε εντελώς καλά. Το δαιμονισμένο παιδί φανερώνει την αναστάτωση και την κυριαρχία των δαιμονικών δυνάμεων στην ζωή του κόσμου και των ανθρώπων καθημερινά. Πολλοί αρνούνται την ύπαρξη του Σατανά και θεωρούν ότι η ύπαρξη του διαβόλου ανήκει στις μεσαιωνικές προλήψεις και στην πρωτόγονη νοημοσύνη. Στις περιπτώσεις αυτές ο διάβολος μπαινοβγαίνει ελεύθερα και χωρίς καμιά αντίσταση στις καρδιές των ανθρώπων και επιτελεί το έργο της απωλείας καταφέρνοντας να μας στήνει την πιο έξυπνη παγίδα: τον φαινομενικό θρίαμβο της ανθρώπινης ανεξαρτησίας. Ο άνθρωπος λοιπόν, όταν βρίσκεται μακριά του Θεού να είναι ανίκανος να φυλάξει τον εαυτό του. Τα πάθη και 14

15 οι αμαρτίες τον υποδουλώνουν και γίνεται υποχείριο των δαιμόνων, μη μπορώντας να απαλλαγεί. Η συνάντηση όμως και επαφή με τον Χριστό δίνει στον άνθρωπο την ελευθερία του. Όταν έπειτα οι μαθητές ρώτησαν τον Χριστό, γιατί οι ίδιοι απέτυχαν να βοηθήσουν τον ασθενή νέο, τους είπε το εξής «δια την απιστίαν υμών. Αμήν γαρ λέγω υμίν, εάν έχητε πίστιν ως κόκκον συνάπεως, ερείτε τω όρει τούτω μετάβηθι εντεύθεν εκεί και μεταβήσεται, και ουδέν αδυνατήσει υμίν». Ίσως ο Χριστός αυτή τη στιγμή τους έδειχνε το Όρος της Μεταμορφώσεως και γινόταν έτσι μια έμμεση αναφορά στο θαυμαστό εκείνο γεγονός που είχε προηγηθεί πριν λίγες ώρες εκεί. Θέλοντας ο Χριστός να διδάξει και αυτούς αλλά κι εμάς τους μετέπειτα Χριστιανούς και μαθητές του πως αποκτούνται τα πνευματικά χαρίσματα, λέει στους Αποστόλους: «αυτό το γένος δεν εκδιώκεται με άλλον τρόπο, παρά μόνο με προσευχή και νηστεία». Η νηστεία μαζί με την πίστη προσφέρει μεγάλη δύναμη. Αυξάνει την ευσέβεια και μεταβάλλει τον άνθρωπο σε άγγελο και μπορεί έτσι να αγωνίζεται εναντίον των ασωμάτων δαιμόνων. Αυτό όμως δεν μπορεί να το κάνει από μόνη της η νηστεία, αλλά χρειάζεται και προσευχή και μάλιστα η προσευχή είναι αυτή που κατέχει την πρώτη θέση. Στην προσευχή ο άνθρωπος στέκεται «ενώπιος ενωπίω» με τον Θεό, σε μία σχέση παιδιού προς πατέρα. Είναι και η προσευχή εκδήλωση εμπιστοσύνης στον Θεό, αλλά ταυτόχρονα και αναγνώριση των ορίων μας, της μεγάλης διαφοράς που μας χωρίζει από Εκείνον. Με την προσευχή αναγνωρίζουμε την ευτέλεια και την αδυναμία μας και ξανοιγόμαστε στο πέλαγος της μεγαλοσύνης και της παντοδυναμίας του Θεού. Ο Χριστός πολλές φορές, διαβεβαίωσε τόσο τους αποστόλους όσο και όλους τους ακροατές του, λέγοντάς τους: «Πάντα όσα αν αιτήσησθε εν τη προσευχή πιστεύοντες λήψεσθε». Όσα ζητήσετε με πίστη κατά την προσευχή σας, θα σας δοθούν. Με το να πει σήμερα ο Χριστός ότι «τούτο το γένος ουκ εκπορεύεται ει μη εν προσευχή και νηστεία», θέλει να καταστήσει σαφές ότι με τις ανθρώπινες δυνάμεις η εκδίωξη του δαιμονίου ήταν αδύνατη. Μόνον η επίκληση του Θεού, που επιτυγχάνεται με θερμή προσευχή, μπορούσε να απαλλάξει το νέο από το δαιμόνιο. Και η δύναμη της νηστείας είναι μεγάλη, όπως μας διαβεβαίωσε ο Χριστός. Αυτός που νηστεύει είναι απαλλαγμένος από περιττά βάρη, ελαφραίνει το σώμα και αποκτά φτερά για να μπορεί να προσεύχεται με καθαρή καρδιά. Η νηστεία σβήνει τις πονηρές επιθυμίες, ταπεινώνει την υπερηφανευόμενη ψυχή και εξευμενίζει τον Θεό. Καθώς ο άνθρωπος καθαρίζεται από τις περιττές ανάγκες και μέριμνες με τη νηστεία, μπορεί και προσεύχεται πιο δυνατά και ειλικρινά. Αυτή η προσευχή γίνεται δυνατότερη από τη φωτιά και προσελκύει ευκολότερα τη χάρη του Θεού. Η στέρηση από τη νηστεία και η αποφυγή των άλλων αμαρτωλών παθών, είναι μερικές θυσίες, που μας κάνουν έστω και στο ελάχιστο κοινωνούς στη θυσία και τα παθήματα του Κυρίου μας. Γι αυτό ο Κύριος, αφού μίλησε στους Μαθητές του για νηστεία, στη συνέχεια αναφέρθηκε στο θάνατό του, ίσως γιατί και με τη μικρή θυσία της νηστείας, γινόμαστε «κοινωνοί» στη δική του Θυσία. Με την πίστη, ο άνθρωπος αναγνωρίζει την αποτυχία του να τελειωθεί μακριά από τον Θεό και επιστρέφει στην πηγή της ζωής, τον Θεό, που εγκατέλειψε. Έτσι γίνεται κοινωνός της Χάριτος και νικά τον διάβολο. Με την προσευχή ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να ξεφύγει από το πνευματικό αδιέξοδο που έχει οδηγηθεί, γιατί νιώθει τη χάρη του Θεού να τον κυριεύει πλημμυρίζοντας την καρδιά του με αγάπη και πνευματική ηρεμία. Κάθε άνθρωπος που προσεύχεται αληθινά-πραγματικά δεν επιστρέφει ποτέ άδειος από την προσευχή. Δηλαδή αν ζητούμε κάτι από τον Κύριο και δεν έχουμε ανταπόκριση, αυτό μπορεί να συμβαίνει γιατί ίσως δεν προσευχόμαστε σωστά. «Αιτείτε και ου λαμβάνετε, διότι κακώς αιτείσθε» (Ιακ. δ 3). Στην σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή ο Κύριος, μας διδάσκει ότι πρέπει να πολεμούμε τους πειρασμούς και τα πάθη μας με προσευχή προς το Θεό, σε συνδυασμό με τη νηστεία, έτσι ώστε με τη δύναμη και τη χάρη του Θεού να βγαίνουμε νικητές. Η δυνατή πίστη στον Θεό, η προσευχή και η νηστεία, αποτελούν τα μεγαλύτερα πνευματικά εφόδια για την πνευματική μας ανάταση. 15
