1 Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Sunday, September 30, nd Sunday of Luke St. Gregory the Illuminator, Bishop of Armenia Feast day: September 30th This Saint, a Parthian by race, was the son of Anak. He was born about the year 240 and was taught the Faith of Christ in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He entered the service of Tiridates, King of Armenia, but when discovered to be a Christian, he was subjected to many horrible torments at the King's hands, then was cast into a pit of mire with poisonous serpents and left to die. By the power of God, however, he abode there unharmed for fourteen years, his needs provided by a certain widow, until he was made known by revelation and set free. He converted to piety innumerable multitudes of Armenians, including Tiridates himself, and was consecrated bishop by Leontius, Archbishop of Caesarea, to shepherd the vast flock he had gained for Christ. He spent the last part of his life in retirement in the ascetical discipline, and reposed in peace about the year 325. Saint Gregory is honored as the Illuminator of Armenia. A thought from St. John Chrysostom If artists who make statues and paint portraits of kings are held in high esteem, will not God bless then thousand times more those who reveal and beautify His royal image? For man is the image of God. When we teach our children to be good, to be gentle, and to be forgiving - all attributes of God; to be generous, to love their neighbor, to regard this present age as nothing, we instill virtue in their souls, and reveal the image of God within them. This, then, is our task: to educate both ourselves and our children in godliness; otherwise what answer will we have before Christ s judgment seat?... Let us be greatly concerned for our wives and our children and for ourselves as well. 2 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ EPISTLE READING FOR THE DAY ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ GOSPEL READING FOR THE DAY Ἀδελφοί, ὁ σπείρων φειδομένως, φειδομένως καὶ θερίσει καὶ ὁ σπείρων ἐπʼ εὐλογίαις, ἐπʼ εὐλογίαις καὶ θερίσει. Ἕκαστος καθὼς προαιρεῖται τῇ καρδίᾳ μὴ ἐκ λύπης ἢ ἐξ ἀνάγκης ἱλαρὸν γὰρ δότην ἀγαπᾷ ὁ θεός. Δυνατὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς πᾶσαν χάριν περισσεῦσαι εἰς ὑμᾶς, ἵνα ἐν παντὶ πάντοτε πᾶσαν αὐτάρκειαν ἔχοντες περισσεύητε εἰς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθόν καθὼς γέγραπται, Ἐσκόρπισεν, ἔδωκεν τοῖς πένησιν ἡ δικαιοσύνη αὐτοῦ μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. Ὁ δὲ ἐπιχορηγῶν σπέρμα τῷ σπείροντι, καὶ ἄρτον εἰς βρῶσιν χορηγήσαι, καὶ πληθύναι τὸν σπόρον ὑμῶν, καὶ αὐξήσαι τὰ γενήματα τῆς δικαιοσύνης ὑμῶν ἐν παντὶ πλουτιζόμενοι εἰς πᾶσαν ἁπλότητα, ἥτις κατεργάζεται διʼ ἡμῶν εὐχαριστίαν τῷ θεῷ. Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος καθὼς θέλετε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως. καὶ εἰ ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας αὐτοὺς ἀγαπῶσι. καὶ ἐὰν ἀγαθοποιῆτε τοὺς ἀγαθοποιοῦντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσι. καὶ ἐὰν δανείζητε παρ ὧν ἐλπίζετε ἀπολαβεῖν, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς δανείζουσιν ἵνα ἀπολάβωσι τὰ ἴσα. πλὴν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ ἀγαθοποιεῖτε καὶ δανείζετε μηδὲν ἀπελπίζοντες, καὶ ἔσται ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολύς, καὶ ἔσεσθε υἱοὶ ὑψίστου, ὅτι αὐτὸς χρηστός ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀχαρίστους καὶ πονηρούς. Γίνεσθε οὖν οἰκτίρμονες, καθὼς καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν οἰκτίρμων ἐστί. The Lord said, "As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."

4 Εκκλησία, η μάνα μας Ρώτησαν κάποτε ένα μοναχό: τι κάνετε τόσες ώρες μέσα στην Εκκλησία, δε βαριέστε; Κι εκείνος απάντησε: εσύ τι έκανες εννιά μήνες στη μήτρα της μάννας σου; Τίποτα. Ήσουν εκεί και τρεφόσουν με το μητρικό αίμα. Το ίδιο κάνουμε κι εμείς. Είμαστε εδώ και τρεφόμαστε από την παρουσία του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Από το σώμα και το Αίμα του Χριστού. Γιατί η Εκκλησία είναι η Μάνα που μας τρέφει. Η φιλόστοργη Μάνα. Η πνευματική καρδιά απ την οποία διαχέεται το αίμα και κρατιούνται ζωντανά τα παιδιά της. Η Εκκλησία είναι σώμα. Δεν είναι κόμμα. Είμαστε μέλη. Δεν είμαστε οπαδοί. Σώμα ένα με κεφαλή το Χριστό. Πονάει ένα μέλος και πονάμε όλοι. Δοξάζεται ένα μέλος και δοξαζόμαστε όλοι. Οικογένεια μία είναι η Εκκλησία: Οι Ζώντες, όσοι είμαστε μέσα στην Εκκλησία και όσοι βογγάνε έξω απ αυτήν - Αυτοί που έφυγαν, οι αδελφοί μας οι Κεκοιμημένοι. Κι αυτοί που ακόμα δεν ήρθαν Οι αγέννητοι.., τα παιδιά των παιδιών μας, τα δισέγγονα και τα τρισέγγονα, όσοι θα μπουν στην Εκκλησία και όσοι θα βογγάνε έξω απ αυτήν. Οικογένεια μία. Γι αυτό στην Εκκλησία δεν εορτάζουμε αλλά συνεορτάζουμε. Δεν νηστεύουμε αλλά συννηστεύουμε. Δε στενάζουμε αλλά συστενάζουμε. Δεν προσευχόμαστε αλλά συμπροσευχόμαστε. Συλλειτουργούμε και συλλειτουργούμαστε. Σώμα ένα είμαστε. Οι γιαγιάδες μας το ήξεραν καλά αυτό. Ήξεραν ότι πρώτα ανήκουμε στην Εκκλησία και μετά στον εαυτό τους. Πρώτα στην Εκκλησία και μετά στο σπίτι τους. Γι αυτό συμμετείχαν στις ανάγκες της. Στο χτίσιμο της Εκκλησίας, στο στρώσιμο, στον έρανο, στις νηστείες, στους εσπερινούς, στα Μυστήρια, στη Λειτουργία. Οι παλιοί άνθρωποι ήξεραν πως δεν υπάρχει άλλος δρόμος, γιατί άλλος δρόμος βγάζει σε άλλο τέρμα. Γνώριζαν ότι η σωτηρία είναι μόνο μέσα στο Καράβι του Χριστού που όσα κύματα και όσες θύελλες κι αν το χτυπούν, δεν καταποντίζεται. - Γέροντα, τα παιδιά μας κοιμούνται στην Εκκλησία, μήπως να μη τα φέρνουμε; - Στο Καράβι να είναι κι ας κοιμούνται, επέμενε ο Γέροντας Πορφύριος. Η Εκκλησία, το Σκάφος του Χριστού! Το Σώμα του Χριστού! Το Στόμα του Χριστού! Η Κιβωτός που μπαίνεις μέσα και σώζεσαι! Αλήθεια, έχουμε βαθιά και ορθή γνώση του τι είναι η Εκκλησία; Είναι μόνο για τις Κυριακές και τις γιορτές ή μπολιάζει όλο το βίο μας; Είναι μόνο για ορισμένες ηλικίες ή αγκαλιάζει όλο τον άνθρωπο από τα πρώτα μέχρι τα έσχατα; Τι περιμένουμε απ Αυτήν; Τι θέλουμε να μας δώσει και τι της χρωστάμε; Αναρωτηθήκαμε ποτέ τι είναι η Εκκλησία και τι της οφείλουμε; Οι Πατέρες λένε πως η Εκκλησία είναι ένα μεγάλο Νοσοκομείο που εφημερεύει σε εικοσιτετράωρη βάση, εδώ και δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ένα Νοσοκομείο που εφημερεύει για όλους. Για ασφαλισμένους και για α- νασφάλιστους. Για πλούσιους και για άπορους. Για επώνυμους και για ανώνυμους και περιθωριακούς ανθρώπους. Ένα μεγάλο Νοσοκομείο στο οποίο αντιμετωπίζεται κάθε νόσημα όσο βαθύ, όσο λοιμώδες και όσο θανατηφόρο κι αν είναι. Ένα μεγάλο Νοσοκομείο στο οποίο μπαίνεις άρρωστος και βγαίνεις υγιής, όπως η αιμορροούσα. Μπαίνεις διώκτης και βγαίνεις Απόστολος, όπως ο Παύλος. Μπαίνεις αμαρτωλός και βγαίνεις άγιος, όπως η αγία Μαρία η Αιγυπτία. Μπαίνεις λύκος και βγαίνεις αρνί, όπως ο άγιος Μωυσής ο Αιθίοπας. Μπαίνεις πτώμα εν αποσυνθέσει και ανίστασαι τετραήμερος, όπως ο Λάζαρος! Γιατί στην Εκκλησία δεν υπάρχει θάνατος. Δεν υπάρχουν νεκροί. Η Εκκλησία είναι η χώρα των Ζώντων όπου υπάρχει Ζωή και περίσσεια Ζωής, δηλαδή ο Χριστός! Από το βιβλίο: «Αντίδωρο»

5 After reading today s Gospel lesson, here are some thoughts we are asking our Sunday School children to ponder: 1. Near the end of this gospel, what does it say God does to the ungrateful and the selfish? 2. Read the prayer of the trisagion that the priest says while we sing the trisagion: what does this prayer say God has done and is doing for us? 3. What does this prayer suggest we have to be grateful to God for? 4. What does this prayer say God is allowing us to do for Him? What should we be offering Him? 5. How much of each day do you think we spend thanking God for what He does for us? Do you think we are showing God we are grateful for what He does for us? 6. What do you think we spend most of our time doing each day? Do you think we are being selfish or generous with our time? 7. How does God respond to us even though we can be ungrateful and selfish? How does this make you feel? *********************************** A thought from St. Paisios the Athonite When we believe in God and have trust in His fatherly providence, then we do not think of ourselves; instead, we know that God is aware of all our needs and looks after our problems, from the simplest to the most serious one. The only thing we must want is to allow God s love and providence to function in our lives, when He wishes to and in the way He thinks is best for us. When we have this kind of faith and inner disposition, we are able to see God s miracles - God Himself - Who is always close to us under all circumstances. In order to experience this, we must reject any form of worldly assistance or human hope and with a pure heart, unhesitatingly and trustfully devote our mind to God. Then, the grace of Christ will fill our soul at once.

7 Για τον Θεό δεν μετράει τόσο η ποσότητα της προσευχής όσο η ποιότητα Όλη η βάση είναι η ποιότητα της προσευχής. Η προσευχή πρέπει να είναι καρδιακή, να γίνεται από πόνο. Για τον Θεό δεν μετράει τόσο η ποσότητα της προσευχής όσο η ποιότητα. Η προσευχή που γίνεται στα μοναστήρια έχει ποσότητα, αλλά δεν φθάνει αυτό. Τόσες ώρες προσευχή που γίνεται από τόσα άτομα, αν ήταν καρδιακή, θα είχε αλλάξει ο κόσμος. Όταν ερχόμαστε στην θέση του άλλου, έρχεται φυσιολογικά η αγάπη, ο πόνος, η ταπείνωση, η ευγνωμοσύνη μας στον θεό με τη συνεχή δοξολογία,και τότε η προσευχή για τον συνάνθρωπό μας γίνεται ευπρόσδεκτη από τον Θεό και τον βοηθάει.
