2 FATHER JAMES MESSAGE Do you ever feel you lack the resources to solve the problems you see around you? When this happens, you must think outside the box! During my studies at Hellenic College/ Holy Cross, it was a great honor and blessing to serve as the Ecclesiarch (keeper of the Church). From my third year at the college until graduation from the School of Theology, I was responsible for the entire function of the Chapel of the Holy Cross. I even learned to make the Prosforo, the offering bread, but was challenged when I was told to prepare the loaves of bread for the service of Artoclasia. During those years, googling a recipe was not an option and there happened to be no cookbooks available; I had to think out of the box. Relying solely on prayer and ingenuity, I used the basic Prosforo recipe; knowing that the bread needed to be sweet, I added some sugar, spices, and oil. After the breads were baked, I coated them with honey and a powdered sugar dusting. It was a hit! Every time there was an Artoclasia after this, the aroma from the leftovers in my dorm room brought classmates to my door, asking if there were any extra loaves for them. I don t think I have done as many Artoclasia services in all my years as a priest as I have at St. Nicholas Cathedral. And that s a blessing! But why do we have Artoclasies? During special feast days and joyful occasions, we witness the service of the blessing of the five loaves. This service reminds us of this week s Gospel lesson from Matthew 14:14-22, read at harvest time, in which Jesus feeds 5,000 hungry people with nothing but two fish and five loaves. When the disciples told the Lord that the five loaves and two fish that were available was not enough food for the multitude, He calmly told them to feed these people. Why did the Lord do that? He did it not to embarrass His disciples, but to teach them the very fundamental approach to problem solving: to become partakers, rather than spectators, of a solution. He wanted to teach them to think not along the lines of what others should do for the solution of life s problems, but to use their ingenuity with their personal contribution as the beginning of the solution; to think outside the box. It was as if He was trying to remind them that if He had decided to be a Heavenly Spectator of human conditions, salvation would have never come into the world. The miracle occurred with the multitude being fed and food even left over for the next day. Jesus was talking to His disciples, but through them He is talking to us, His modernday disciples. How many times haven t we also pointed out the problems surrounding us, but avoided becoming part of the solution? How often has it been stated that society is not what it ought to be any more, that family is going down the drain and that the media is corruption the young? How many times have these problems or similar ones been discussed, and yet they continue to plague us? Pointing out the problems does not solve them; doing something personally about them, does! What Jesus teaches us is that things really begin rolling when we personally begin doing something about problems around us. Do you abhor the injustices around you? Do something about it. Revolt with goodness! Do you speak of human pain and suffering that are so evident in the world today? Do something personally to ease someone s pain. Volunteer to feed the hungry! You might think: But what can I do? I don t have the right resources. I have nothing to offer. That is what the disciples said: We have only five loaves and two fish. When you think you have nothing to offer, remember this Gospel story and remember that the miracle begins with an unimpressive offering that you make to help solve a problem. I had only a recipe for Prosforo and yet turned it into five loaves of sweet bread, by thinking outside the box and praying to the Lord that these breads be acceptable. However small is your offering, when passed through the hands of the Lord, it becomes a great offering. (Cont. on p. 11)

5 EPISTLE I Corinthians 1:10-17 B rethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. GOSPEL Matthew 14:14-22 A t that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

6 Saints and Feasts of the Week THE DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS When the time drew nigh that our Savior was wellpleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. Meanwhile, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one was preaching, and brought them to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed them, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God. With reverence, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that Godreceiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent her forth. One Jew, moved by malice, stretched forth his hand upon the bed and immediately those daring hands were severed by an invisible blow. When he repented, his hands were restored. When they had reached the place called Gethsemane, they buried there the all-immaculate body of the Theotokos. ΚΟΙΜΗΣΙΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ Όταν ήλθε η στιγμή να τελειώσει την επίγεια ζωή της η Θεοτόκος, άγγελος Κυρίου της το έκανε γνωστό τρεις μέρες πριν. Η χαρά της υπήρξε μεγάλη, διότι θα συναντούσε το μονογενή της Υιό και Θεό όλων των ανθρώπων. Πήγε, λοιπόν, και προσευχήθηκε στο όρος των Ελαίων. Έπειτα, γύρισε στο σπίτι του Ιωάννη, όπου έκανε γνωστή την επικείμενη κοίμηση της. Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι την τρίτη ήμερα από την εμφάνιση του αγγέλου, λίγο πριν κοιμηθεί η Θεοτόκος, οι Απόστολοι ήταν σε μακρινούς τόπους όπου κήρυτταν το Ευαγγέλιο. TRANSLATION OF THE IMAGE OF OUR LORD AND GOD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST When the fame of our Lord Jesus Christ came to Abgar, the ruler of Edessa, who was suffering from leprosy, he sent a messenger named Ananias, through asking the Savior to heal him, while bidding Ananias bring back a depiction of Him. When he came to Jerusalem, He, the Knower of hearts, asked for water, and having washed His immaculate and divine face, wiped it dry with a certain cloth, which He gave to Ananias to take to Abgar; the form of the Lord's face had been wondrously printed upon the cloth. As soon as Abgar received the cloth, which is called the Holy Napkin, he reverenced it with joy, and was eventually completely healed of his leprosy. Abgar had it fixed to a board in a rounded hollow at the city gate, commanding that all who entered the city reverence it as they passed through. Abgar's grandson, however, returned to the worship of the idols, and the Bishop of Edessa learned of his intention to replace the Holy Napkin with an idol. The bishop set a burning lamp before the Holy Napkin, put a tile facing it, then bricked up the place and smoothed it over, so that the holy icon made without hands was no longer to be seen, and the ungodly ruler gave no further thought to it. The hidden icon was forgotten until the year 615, when Chosroes II, King of Persia, besieged Edessa. The Bishop of Edessa, Eulabius, instructed by divine revelation, opened the sealed chamber above the city gate and found the Holy Napkin incorrupt, the lamp burning, and the tile bearing an identical copy of the image that was on the Holy Napkin. The Persians had built a huge fire outside the city wall; when the Bishop approached with the Holy Napkin, a violent wind fell upon the fire, turning it back upon the Persians, who fled in defeat. The Holy Napkin remained there until 944, when it was brought to Constantinople. It was enshrined in the Church of the most holy Theotokos (the Pharos). This is what we celebrate on August 16.

7 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him. 14 St. Nicholas Cathedral Vacation Bible School During our 2016 week of VBS, we learned about and celebrated Super Heroes of Orthodoxy We had amazing teachers, wonderful parents and awesome children. We appreciate our parents for bringing their children to VBS. Mostly, we must say Thank You to Nicholas Athanasatos, Niko Gonatos, Maria Laden, Mr. Emmanuel Gombos and four awesome young ladies: Danielle, Stephanie, Ashley and Nicole Alexiou. We truly enjoyed our week together!
