AHEPA MEMORIAL Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. (Please see the Calendar in the middle of the Bulletin for all liturgical services.) 8 9

8 Thoughts from our Parish Priest St. James the Monk, the murderer and the rapist God sees His creatures, such as man, not from what can be observed, but from the heart. And by His choices, He gives a loud slap to our respectability and pietism. If such a man as Saint James lived today, journalists would completely destroy him. Yet this man was recognized by God, and God revealed him to be one of our saints. Yes, actions are a sign of holiness or evil, but not always. There are cases when saints have fallen, and fallen hard. A well known example from ancient times of an adulterer and murderer is King David, the man who was after God s heart. But in later times, God has allowed saints to have dramatic falls, for many reasons, of which the three most important are: 1. That we may not rest on our laurels. 2. That our pietism and criticism of others may be struck. 3. That we might experience the saving power of repentance, and defeat despair. For fifteen years James was an ascetic in a cave. One time, people from the nearby town - proponents of secularism, sent to James a prostitute to offer herself to him. James did not give in to the temptation, and this encounter shocked the woman to the point that she repented and lived a Christian life. After a few years, a nobleman sent his daughter to the monk, because she suffered from a serious illness. James prayed for her and she was released from the illness. James accepted to keep her and her brother in his cave for a few days, at the request of their father. However, James was overcome by temptation. He raped the daughter, and in his fear of being caught, he killed her and her brother, as he was the only witness of the crime. In a panic, James fled to the desert, dug a grave and sat in it hoping to die, having lost all hope of mercy from God. The local bishop learned of the situation and travelled to where James was. When he found him, he explained to James that despair is a sin greater than his crimes. James accepted the bishop s words, but he did not leave the tomb he dug. He decided to stay in there until his last breath as an exercise of self-denial. At one point, a great drought came over the area, and the bishop had the purity of heart to see that only if James prayed, could nature be overcome. Clergy and lay people walked out to the desert to the tomb where the criminal ascetic was sitting. They convinced him to pray, and right away the rain came, verifying the holiness of the repentant man. Thoughts from our Parish Priest God does not judge from what can be observed, as people do. Nor is it beneficial for the Church to judge. Christians are not judges of their brethren, but physicians and fellow spiritual patients. Their role is not to condemn, but help, comfort, and heal their fellow ill with God s help, no matter how heavy their illness may be. Purification for Christians is a personal matter, and applies to each person individually. It is not massively applicable to a group, whether it is the Church or something else. Because in every group there will always be someone who falls, and in the field of the Lord there will always be weeds, until the end of time. So let us not condemn our brethren, whatever they may do. Instead, let us weep and pray for them, for whose sake Christ died. Let us revive ourselves, saying, Woe to me a sinner! For if this my good brother fell, what kind of fall awaits me, the sinner and ungodly! For God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble, and with the measure by which we measure, by the same measure we will be measured.

9 Thoughts from our Parish Priest 10 Church Iconography Program Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas The iconographer will be coming this spring/summer to install the icons. If you would like to make a donation towards one of the icons that are still available, please contact the church office immediately!! 19 Cypriot Association ST. NEOPHYTOS, THE UNKNOWN CYPRIOT SAINT? St. Neophytos was born in the year 1134 of pious Orthodox parents who had eight children. His parents, Athanasios and Evdoxia, strove to impart to their children a love for our Lord. Evdoxia upon the death of her husband entered a convent. The family was extremely poor and the Saint had to till the fields with his father and was not able to attend school even for one day. When Saint Neophytos became eighteen years old, his parents, according to the custom of the time, undertook to arrange a marriage for him. Even at that young age, St. Neophytos had come to understand the vanity of this world and his soul desired to give itself completely to the Savior. He secretly departed from his paternal home and sought to find a monastery where his parents would not find him. He reached Mount Koutsoventes where he found a monastery dedicated to Saint John Chrysostom. In this monastery, the Saint was given the obedience to work in the vineyards. He remained in this service for five years, praying and studying the word of God night and day. Although had never attended school, through the Grace of God he was soon not only able to read, but could recite by heart the Psalms of Prophet David. As well, the Lord gave him such understanding that his writings can be compared with the works of the great Fathers of the Church. It is estimated that he was the author of many works totaling as much as five thousand pages. Currently scholars at the University of Edinburgh Scotland are preparing to publish the surviving writings of Saint Neophytos. Following his stay at the monastery, St. Neophytos wanted to leave Cyprus to go to Mount Latros in Asia Minor where most of the fathers from Palestine and Egypt had gathered. However, when the he reached the port city of Paphos, he was arrested by the guards of that city who suspected that he was a fugitive. He was bound and cast into prison where he remained for a sufficient length of time. Certain Christians of the city learned of his situation and arranged for his release. Seeing this as a sign from God, the Saint determined not to leave Cyprus. Not having any particular place in mind he left the city and directed himself toward the highlands. North of Paphos, high on a mountain he found a desert place with a steep precipice On closer examination he was able to discern a small cave and immediately the Saint knew that this was the desert which the Lord selected for him. This cave was found on the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, June 24th, 1159, where he enclosed himself giving it the name Enkleistra or Enclosure, and laid the foundation for the present day monastery. On his way to Jerusalem to take part in the Third Crusade, Richard the Lion-hearted invaded and captured Cyprus on May 6, 1191, and subsequently sold it to the monastic order of the Knights Templars, who in turn sold it to the deposed King of Jerusalem, Guy de Lusignan, in The Franks introduced the Feudal system and all Cypriots became serfs. The Orthodox Church was persecuted and all educated people and most bishops were forced to leave. Using similar methods in Southern Italy and in Sicily, the Papacy forced the people to become Roman Catholics. Saint Neophytos, at fifty-eight years of age, was called on by God to undertake a new struggle as the spiritual guide of all Cyprus. In 1196 under the direction of Pope Celestine III, a Latin Metropolitan along with suffragan bishops were given the spiritual leadership of the people of Cyprus. This was the Papal policy in all the conquered lands where there were Orthodox. Saint Neophytos led the resistance against the latinization of Cyprus without Cypriot Association going against his vow to remain in his cave. When it was necessary, he would write general epistles which were sent to the various parish throughout Cyprus. Saint Neophytos observed that the growing numbers of the faithful and those who desired to attend to his teaching were depriving him of his cherished solitude. He decided that after forty years in his beloved cave of the Holy Cross he would have to leave and go higher up on the precipice. Placing a ladder on the ledge outside his cave he stood on top of the ladder and excavated a small opening which with time he enlarged so that it would become his new place of habitation. Once the new cave was complete he wished to make a ledge upon which he could walk. As the ledge was nearing completion, a boulder was dislodged and, as it rolled, it would take with it the man of God. Just as the Saint was about to roll off the ledge and fall to his death, by miracle the boulder was held back. His fame in the new cave known as New Zion, spread everywhere and many flocked to him for his prayers and blessing, and to become his disciples. After much pleading he consented to accept a few disciples, later commanding that his monastery never exceed eighteen fathers. In a divine vision, Basil, the Bishop of Paphos, who had great love and veneration for Saint Neophytos, pleaded with him to accept ordination from his hands. Finally, in obedience the man of God received the Grace of the Priesthood. He was thirty-six years of age when through Gods Providence he entered the final stage of preparation which would make him the spiritual father of all Cyprus when the Latin cloud would descend upon it. St. Neophytos reposed on April 12th, 1219 (at the age of 85) after having given the people of Cyprus the guidance which would assist them in resisting the efforts of the Papists. The Grace that flowed from that holy cave, however, would not cease. His presence was something the people of Cyprus always felt although for hundreds of years no one knew where his Holy Relic was. On September 27th, 1750, a certain monk who had thought that he found a hollow space in the wall of the Enkleistra was overcome by temptation and imagined that there was a treasure to be found behind the wall. That night he waited for the fathers to sleep and he went to the Cave of the Holy Cross with a pickaxe and made an opening in the wall. He was then struck down by a Divine hand. When he came to himself, he ran to the abbot to confess his sin. The abbot, realizing the true nature of the treasure that was found, summoned the other fathers and lifted the marble cover and immediately the cave was filled with indescribable fragrance. Since then the 28th of September is also kept as a feast day by our Holy Church. The St. Neophytos main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after his death and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Enkleistra. You can also see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery and also visit the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period. Interesting places for the visitor are the cave with the cell of Saint Neophytos (Enkleistra). The Enkleistra, an enclosure carved out of the mountain by the hermit, contains some of the finest Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to the 15th century. His rock-table and the stone platform on which he slept are still preserved in his cell, as is his grave. According to legend, this grave is adjusted so that it comes to measures whoever tries it

26 Community Event Photos 4th Salutations to the Theotokos service & Spiritual Retreat with His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios (8 & 9 April 2016, St. Demetrios Greek Church) Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Contacts: Christos Argiriou, Greek Community board member: primary contact for any questions or concerns. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre: primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director (5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre ): primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). If you have a loved one currently in a care facility or are looking into future residency, and you are interested in the opportunity of residence within a Greek unit at the Charleswood Care Centre, please contact Mr. Chris Argiriou via the Church office at
