Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Contacts: Christos Argiriou, Greek Community board member: primary contact for any questions or concerns. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre: primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director (5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre ): primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). If you have a loved one currently in a care facility or are looking into future residency, and you are interested in the opportunity of residence within a Greek unit at the Charleswood Care Centre, please contact Mr. Chris Argiriou via the Church office at

Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

Thoughts from our Parish Priest The Dormition of the Theotokos By Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos Today's feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, my beloved brethren, is characterized by our people as the "Summer Pascha". People make their appearance today in all the churches to honor the Dormition of the Theotokos and celebrate with reverence and joy. Every church, every chapel and shrine is filled with many pilgrims, and in many cases after the Divine Liturgy the celebration continues throughout the course of the day. It is preceded by a period of fifteen days of fasting and prayer, in order that we may celebrate in the best possible way the feast of the Mother of Christ, and our Mother. The feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is called "Summer Pascha", because apart from the brilliant celebration, today's feast reminds us of the Pascha in the spring, the Resurrection of Christ. On the brilliant day of the Resurrection we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, the rising of His Body, and later we celebrate the glorious Ascension of Christ with His resurrected Body. By analogy, the same is celebrated today. Today's feast is called the Dormition of the Theotokos, but it is also characterized as the Metastasis of our Panagia and her heavenly rising. This Metastasis was the resurrection of her body, and her heavenly rising was her ascension into the heavens with her body. Hence, the Panagia is physically in heaven, near her Son. Of course, there is a basic difference, because Christ Himself rose His own Body by His divinity, while the resurrection of the Theotokos was by the power and energy of her Son, of Christ. According to the tradition of our Church, three days after the entombment of the Panagia, when the disciples went to her tomb to venerate her, they saw that her body was missing. This tradition is preserved in many hymns of the Church. In one hymn we chanted this morning, written by Saint Kosmas the Poet, it says: "You received many victorious trophies against nature, Pure One, having given birth to God, yet, imitating your Maker and Son, you supernaturally bowed to the laws of nature, and having died you rose and are with your Son for eternity." The resurrection of the body of our Panagia and her ascension into the heavens is explained theologically by the fact that the Word of God united the divine nature to His human nature in His hypostasis, thereby deifying human nature. Therefore, the Panagia is the first to taste of the fruits of the hypostatic union of the divine and human nature in the hypostasis of the Word, and she also was the first to behold the Resurrected Christ, according to the teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas. And in as much as the Body of Christ that came forth from the Panagia rose, it was obvious that the body of our Panagia would also rise and ascend. 18
Thoughts from our Parish Priest Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite gathered many passages from the Holy Fathers that refer to the topic of the resurrection of the body of our Panagia, such as from St. Andrew of Crete, St. John of Damascus, St. Gregory Palamas and St. Mark the Evgenikos. We also find it in many hymns of the Church. This is why the Dormition of our Panagia is called a glorious Dormition. The important thing from today's feast, my beloved brethren, is that today we celebrate another Pascha, the "Summer Pascha". It shows that what took place with our Panagia, will certainly take place with us at the Second Coming of Christ, when our own bodies will rise. And we must pray today to our Panagia to intercede for us, that we may live according to the commandments of her Son that we also may be found worthy to find rest in the eternal Pascha with Christ, the Panagia and all the saints. Therefore, we should not fear death, but we should get ready until the time we enjoy eternal life in the Pascha of the Kingdom of God.
Thoughts from our Parish Priest 20

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas UPDATE: The iconographer will be coming in the fall to install the icons. If you would like to make a donation towards one of the icons that are still available, please contact the church office immediately!! All icons need to be ordered and completed before the iconographer arrives to install them. 22

Sunday School Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS: Sunday School registration will begin this month for the coming year which begins Sunday, September 11. This year's registration forms will be a little different from last years, so please, everyone must fill them out, even if you have done so in previous years. *************************************************************************************** SUNDAY SCHOOL IS OPEN TO ALL THOSE WHO WILL TURN THREE ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, Our classes are mixed grade classes and go from pre-k all the way to University level, and are taught in English, although some Greek language hymnography may be taught. CLASSES ARE FREE TO ALL! *************************************************************************************** We are planning a much more dynamic program this year, and we ask that parents please keep in mind that in order to plan for the various activities and classroom crafts we need to have attendance be as consistent as possible. If your child will not be able to make it to class due to a scheduling conflict, please notify your child's teacher or Victoria Marckx in advance so the teachers are aware for planning purposes. In addition, please note that upon registration you will receive a handbook explaining some of the different programs we will be having this year. Victoria Marckx will always be available to discuss questions, comments, or concerns any parents may have about the curriculum, or about the individual needs of the students. *************************************************************************************** We are still looking for a teacher to teach our Junior High level class (Grades 7, 8, and 9). If you are interested please contact Victoria Marckx at or by at victoriamarckx@ gmail.com. Prospective teachers please note: We have outstanding materials for this grade level, so you will not be required to invent lesson plans... all we ask is devotion to the Church, enthusiasm, and patience with and love for children. ************************************************************************************** ATTENTION CRAFTERS: The Sunday School is looking for donations of fabric and sewing 24
Sunday School materials that can be used to make costumes for our younger children (grades Pre-K - Grade 3). If you have extra fabric from projects, or can volunteer some time to sew, we would love your help! We are looking only for colours that would have been common in biblical times, so please, no florals (stripes are OK) or bright colours... think iconography, for a guide. *************************************************************************************** FOR ALL SINGERS: Do you love to sing? Can you sing some basic hymnography in Greek and English? Do you like to teach small children to sing? If so, then please consider volunteering for our Sunday School Music Days! Once a month or so, we will be having a day devoted to the hymns of our church, with each grade learning to sing the beautiful hymns of the church that are appropriate for their grade level. We would like each class to have a special "music teacher: who can visit them on these days, and teach them hymns which range from the simplest Trisagion to festal hymnography, depending on age. You only feel confident teaching the simplest hymns? NO PROBLEM! We can use you with our youngest children! Accomplished cantor? PLEASE...we can use your skills also with our high school and university children! Let's fill our halls and our church with music! (we need anywhere from 4-5 teachers, so, please, contact us to help) ************************************************************************************** ATTENTION PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS/GODPARENTS: This year will mark the beginning of a Sunday School Parent-Teacher Association. Please consider joining! The time commitment will be small, but it is vitally important that the teachers have parent contacts and feedback. As of this writing, none of the teachers have any children, so we need some parent input! Please help us to provide the best programming for the children in our parish...their future concerns us all. ************************************************************************************** The Sunday School would like to thank those who made donations for curriculum materials over the summer. In particular, we would like to thank the Philoptochos, AHEPA, Orthodox Lighthouse, Potamitis Publishing, and others who made donations either of money or of materials but would like to remain anonymous. Thanks to their generosity, we have been able to purchase new curriculum materials that were sorely needed for our students. We still have many items on our wish list for each class, so if you are able, please speak to Victoria Marckx to ask how you may help! May God keep us all under his care and watchful eye. Rev. 26 ST. DEMETRIOS NOW HAS A MOBILE CHILDREN'S ORTHODOX BOOK LIBRARY!!! WHAT IS IT??? Our library is a rolling library cart with Orthodox books for children of all ages. As of this writing, we have 60 books, mostly picture books, and are looking to purchase many more. HOW WILL WE USE IT??? The cart will visit each Sunday School class each week. Children will have a few minutes of "library time" to choose their books, fill out the library check out card, and can then take their books home to share with the family for two weeks. Parents with children younger than three are welcome to check books out for their children as well. Teachers will have an extra wealth of extra-curricular books to make the classroom more fun! Children can sign up for reading contests with prizes once the number of books gets to a level that supports this. CAN WE BUY ANY OF THE BOOKS??? Twice a year (in October and in February) Order forms will be sent home with the students so parents can order books in time for Advent or Lenten reading. Special arrangements have been made with publishers for bulk purchases. WHAT IF I HAVE A FAVOURITE ORTHODOX CHILDREN'S BOOK THE LIBRARY DOESN'T HAVE? We'd love to hear about it, and we'd love to purchase it if it's in print. HOW CAN WE HELP BUILD THE LIBRARY??? Thanks to the very very generous donations from authors, parishioners, non-parishioners, and others, we were able to get the cart, the paper goods (library pockets, cards, due date slips, and stamps) and the first sixty books in record time. We need to purchase many more books to fill our cart! Donations are requested of money only (please no used books without talking to Victoria Marckx or to Fr. Kosta first to see if the item is appropriate for our library). We request monetary donations rather than people individually ordering their favourite books because the Church has discount arrangements with publishers for bulk purchases and can purchase more than individuals can for the same money. All amounts will help us with our purchasing, so please be as generous as you can. MAY I MAKE MEMORIAL DONATIONS OR DONATIONS HONOURING SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY: Yes! Absolutely! We have crafted donation book plates both of "In honour of" and "In Memory of". Donating books to the library would be a wonderful way to honour those we remember and a great way to celebrate the birthday or name day of a child, parent, or grandparent. The library depends on your support. We all know that ordering Orthodox books for our children can cost as much as $50 per book, once customs duties and currency conversion are taken into account. Please be as generous as you can so that all our children can access the wealth of Orthodox children's literature that is out there, waiting to be read. 26
PLEASE DONATE NOW to our Saint Demetrios Orthodox Children s Library All the Finest Orthodox Children s Books in Print! Of all holy works, the education of children is the most holy. ~Saint Theophan the Recluse Please contact Victoria Marckx for details: or victoriamarckx@gmail.com 27

Cypriot Association The following poem was written by Myrianthi Papaonisiforou, first cousin of Kyriacos Hatzipanayis, and it is devoted to the commemoration of the 42 anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, Unfortunately, despite numerous U.N. Council resolutions, 40% of our homeland is still divided and occupied by the Turkish armed forces.
