11 Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre: primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director (5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre ): primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). If you have a loved one currently in a care facility or are looking into future residency, and you are interested in the opportunity of residence within a Greek unit at the Charleswood Care Centre, please contact Mr. Chris Argiriou via the Church office at

13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

18 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Beloved in Christ, First, congratulations to all who are graduating and moving on to the next stage of their studies or careers. Thank you to all our Greek School and Sunday School teachers for another year of dedication to the education of our youth. On Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world, the completion of Christ s promise, and the fulfilment of the hope of the Apostles. This day is the final celebration of God s love for His creation. On Pentecost the uneducated fishermen are made wise by the Holy Spirit and are now able to preach and explain the divine doctrines. The Apostles become messengers of the Truth as they are ordained by Christ. Often we hear that Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. This, however, is not true, since the Fathers of the Church teach that the Church existed before all other things, since the Body of Christ includes everyone who believed and followed the True God, from the beginning of time to today. In fact, the Church existed from the creation of the angels, who were created before the world and are members of the Church. Pentecost then, is not the birth of the Church, but it is the ordination of the Apostles and the beginning of their preaching to the nations. On this day, Christ ordained the Apostles and made them stewards and priests of the Holy Altars. Christ also made them worthy to ordain others through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The ordination of the Apostles by Christ Himself means that the grace of the Holy Spirit came through the ordination of the Apostles to their successors, up to the present day. Pentecost is the beginning of the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, by which we become partakers of the Body and Blood of Christ. Before Pentecost, the Apostles practiced prayer and supplication (Acts 1:14), but after the coming of the Holy Spirit, they began to offer the Holy Eucharist to the faithful. On Pentecost we began to partake of Christ in the most intimate way, by receiving His saving and purifying Body and Blood inside us. Pentecost is not the birthday of the Church, but it is the beginning of the priesthood of grace. From that point on, the Apostles proclaimed the Good News, preaching, baptizing, and ordaining successors and shepherds to the flock of Christ by imparting to them the priesthood. On Pentecost, the division of the tower of Babel is broken, as Christ calls all to unity through the mouths of the Apostles, who are guided always by the Holy Spirit. Glory to God, Who made the uneducated fishermen wise fishers of men, catching in their spiritual nets the whole world, through the power of the Holy Spirit. A blessed and safe summer to you and your families. May we return from our holidays rejuvenated and ready to do God s work in His vineyard. 18

19 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Αγαπητοι, Πρώτα, συγχαρητήρια σε όλους που αποφοιτούν και προχωρούν στο επόμενο στάδιο των σπουδών τους. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στους δάσκαλους του Ελληνικού Σχολείου και Κατηχητικού μας για ακόμα ένα χρόνο αφιέρωσης προς την εκπαίδευση της νεολαίας μας. Στην Πεντηκοστή γιορτάζουμε τον ερχομό του Άγιου Πνεύματος στον κόσμο, την ολοκλήρωση της υπόσχεσης του Χριστού, και την εκπλήρωση της πίστεως των Αποστόλων. Αυτή είναι η τελευταία γιορτή της αγάπης του Θεού για την κτίση Του. Στην Πεντηκοστή οι αγράμματοι ψαράδες γίνονται σοφοί από το Αγιο Πνεύμα και τώρα μπορούν να κηρύξουν και να εξηγήσουν τα θεία δόγματα. Οι Απόστολοι γίνονται αγγελιοφόροι της Αληθείας, αφού χειροτονούνται από τον Χριστό. Συχνά ακούμε ότι η Πεντηκοστή είναι το γενέθλιο της Εκκλησίας. Αυτό είναι λάθος, γιατί οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας διδάσκουν ότι η Εκκλησία υπήρχε πριν από κάθε άλλο πράγμα, εφόσον το Σώμα του Χριστού συμπεριλαμβάνει όλους όσους πίστεψαν και ακολούθησαν τον αληθινό Θεό, από την αρχή του κόσμου έως και σήμερα. Στην πραγματικότητα, η Εκκλησία υπήρχε από την δημιουργία των Άγγελων, οι οποίοι δημιουργήθηκαν πριν τον κόσμο, και είναι μέλη της Εκκλησίας. Άρα η Πεντηκοστή δεν είναι το γενέθλιο της Εκκλησίας, αλλά η χειροτονία των Αποστόλων και η αρχή του κηρύγματος των στα έθνη. Αυτή την ημέρα, ο Χριστός χειροτόνησε του Αποστόλους και τους έκανε λειτουργούς στα Αγια Θυσιαστήρια. Ο Χριστός τους έκανε άξιους να χειροτονούν άλλους μέσω της καθοδήγησης του Άγιου Πνεύματος. Η χειροτονία των Αποστόλων από τον ίδιο τον Χριστό σημαίνει ότι η χάρη του Άγιου Πνεύματος ήρθε και σε αυτούς που χειροτόνησαν οι Απόστολοι, έως και σήμερα. Η Πεντηκοστή είναι η αρχή του εορτασμού της Θείας Ευχαριστίας, μέσω της οποίας γινόμαστε συμμέτοχοι του Σώματος και Αίματος του Χριστού. Πριν την Πεντηκοστή οι Απόστολοι συμμετείχαν σε προσευχή και δέηση (Πράξεις 1-14), όμως μετά τον ερχομό του Άγιου Πνεύματος, άρχισαν να προσφέρουν την Θεία Ευχαριστία στους πιστούς. Στην Πεντηκοστή αρχίσαμε να λαμβάνουμε τον Χριστό στον πιο οικείο τρόπο, με την μετάληψη του Άγιου Σώματος και Αίματος μέσα μας. Η Πεντηκοστή δεν είναι το γενέθλιο της Εκκλησίας, αλλά είναι η αρχή της ιεροσύνης της χάριτος. Από αυτό το σημείο οι Απόστολοι κηρύξαν το Ευαγγέλιο, βαπτίζοντας και χειροτονώντας διαδόχους και ποιμένες της Εκκλησίας με την μετάδοση του Άγιου Πνεύματος. Τη Πεντηκοστή, ο χωρισμός του πύργου της Βαβέλ διαλύεται, και ο Χριστός καλεί όλους στην ενότητα μέσω των στομάτων των Αποστόλων, τους οποίους καθοδηγεί το Αγιο Πνεύμα. Δόξα Τον Θεο, που έκανε τους αγράμματους ψαράδες σοφούς ψαράδες ανθρώπων, πιάνοντας στα πνευματικά δίχτια τους όλο το κοσμο, μέσω της δύναμης του Άγιου Πνεύματος. 20 CHRIST IS RISEN! Message from the Community President On behalf of the Board of Directors, we hope that you all had a joyous and blessed Pascha. What a very busy month we have had. I would like to take a few moments to tell you all about our great events that took place over the course of the last four weeks. A new spiritual retreat that was started by our Sunday School Director Victoria Marckx, along with Athena Dinos (principal of our Greek School). The children celebrated Lazarus Saturday, with a spiritual retreat. The event was held in the main hall of the church. This was an absolutely beautiful event, that had young and older children involved in learning about our faith while playing games and many other interactive activities, all designed to learn about Lazarus Saturday and Holy Week. This was a great way to get the children involved and to learn all about the different services that take place during Holy Week. Thank you very much Victoria and her husband Xenios for organizing the retreat. This was a great opportunity for the Greek school and the Sunday school children to come together and be a part of something very wonderful! We had a lot of service during Holy Week, and we have a lot of people to thank for making this week go very smoothly. First of all, our Spiritual Leader Fr. Kosta and Deacon John. Our tireless Chanters both young and old. Our wonderful choir who sang so beautifully. Our wonderful Altar boys. The beautiful young Girls (the Μυροφόρες). Our Καντηλανάφτη Μιχάλη. The young men and some of our board members that helped carry the Επιτάφιο outside and around the church. Also, each and every one of you for coming to the services and supporting our church and our community. As we move forward into the month of May, we held our second annual Mother's Day lunch after church on Sunday, May 8th. I would like to thank everyone for coming out, supporting and celebrating our great mothers. I would like to thank all the volunteers for helping with this event. A very special Thank you goes to John and Vicki Ganas (NICK'S INN) for donating the chicken for the luncheon. On Saturday, May 14th, the Daughters of Penelope held their second annual fund-raising dinner at the main hall of the church, to raise funds for Η Κιβωτού του Kόσμου. This is a great cause to help children in Greece. The Daughters did a great job and served a wonderful and delicious meal. Our annual spring cleanup was also held on May 28th. It was an opportunity to get together with some parishioners and board members to help spruce up and beautify the outside of our church and courtyard. 20

21 Message from the Community President Our office administrator Anastasia has been very busy in getting our facilities, both the main hall and MHCC rented out for different events in May and in June. This is much-needed revenue for our community to help in paying our bills and keeping our doors open. Also, for the first time ever on Sunday, June 5th, the Board of Directors has decided to have a "MEMBER APPRECIATION DAY". We will be cooking and serving a free lunch to everyone that Sunday and then we will follow with the annual AGM meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the AHEPA family for their $5000 donation and continued support of our St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and Community. AHEPA also contributed to The Greek School, which received laptop computers, The Sunday School received $500, and another $500 was given to GOYA. We would also like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Bill & Debby Vlahos for their generous contribution and continued support of our church and community. They have offered to clean/sweep and prepare our church's parking lot and repaint the much needed parking lines. This would have cost our community thousands of dollars. This is a perfect example of how we can all work together, using our God-given talents, our time and our money to keep our beautiful St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and Community moving forward for many generations to come. 22 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. 24 The Ladies of Philoptochos Christ is Risen! With God s help we have arrived at the end of our ecclesiastical year. There will be no meetings over the summer, and we look forward to seeing everyone in September. We are grateful to our Lord Jesus Christ who has equipped us with every heavenly blessing to continue the mission of Philoptochos. We are so privileged to have with us the wise counsel of some of the original founding members of our chapter from What an incredible inspiration this is for us as we look forward to celebrating our 60th year of service in We thank you ladies and love you!! We also want to remember the contributions of our pioneers that are no longer with us, and those who are home bound. The example of your service and dedication continues to inspire our chapter and our community. We are abiding by the commandment of St. Paul in his letter to the Collosians, What ever you do in word or deed do it as unto the Lord. Ευχαριστουμε τον Κυριο μας Ιησου Χριστο που μας αξιωσε, μας ενδυναμωσε με ολα τα εφοδια του ουρανου να προσφερουμε στο εργο της Φιλοπτωχου. Η δραση των Κυριων συνεχιζεται απο της ιδρυσεως της αδελφοτητος τον Μαιο του 1957 με μεγαλη αφοσιωση. Ειναι μεγαλη ευλογια οτι εχουμε αναμεσα μας προτωπορα μελη παραδειγμα προς μιμηση σε ολους μας. Ενα μεγαλο ευχαριστω με μεγαλη ευγνωμοσυνη στις αδελφες που δεν ειναι μαζι μας και στις αδελφες που για ευλογους λογους δεν μπορουν να παραβρισκοντε στις συγκεντρωσεις μας. 26 Programs for Kids & Adults: Sunday School You are invited Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. The last day of Sunday School this year will be June 12. We will resume classes on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, We are still looking for dedicated people willing to teach Sunday School for our middle grades beginning in September. Please contact Fr. 27 Greek School The 2015/2016 school year came to an end with our Greek School Graduation and Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 28 th. We congratulate all the students for their commitment and hard work. Their accomplishments are great and we are extremely proud of them all! The Order oh AHEPA generously donated a monetary gift to each student graduating this year. Thank you AHEPA for your support! We would like to sincerely thank John Ginakes, Dino and Georgia Chouzouris and Ross Hoople for their donations towards the hot dog lunch for the students on the last day of classes. The Greek School Parent Association would like to take this opportunity to thank our principal, Athena Dinos, for her ongoing dedication to the Greek School and the teaching staff and assistants for their efforts and achievements this year. The knowledge that they share with our children forms the foundation for which our language and culture can pass on from generation to generation.
