3 THE PASTOR S LETTER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. James 4:14 HAPPY NEW YEAR! That s right, it s a new year. Each September 1 st our Holy Orthodox Church celebrates the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. The Church also calls us during this month, to approach with reverence the Holy Cross which we remember on September 14 th. This is a great day as witnessed to us by the many faithful who venerate the Holy Cross to receive its divine grace. There is no other emblem more honorable and holy for the Christian heart then the Holy Cross. The Cross of our Lord is the means of our salvation. On the Cross the Redeemer of humankind spread out His hands and by His sacrifice, returned the sinful man to the Grace of God. As we read above, no one knows what will come tomorrow. We must not waste our precious time thinking about what will come next but only live in the present. It is even more useless to live in the past because it can never be changed. We must only plan for the future while living in the present in order to do the best we can. That is why we are going to continue the programs we began last year so that all members of our parish may either begin or continue on their path towards salvation. It is your responsibility, as a faithful Orthodox Christian, to participate within these programs and projects when called upon. By not participating, only YOU lose out and no one else is to blame but yourself. Let us begin the New Church Year by supporting the many established and new programs and projects of our Parish. Your support and commitment is an expression of love for our Parish and you will certainly receive great benefits. So, make your new year s resolution to participate, you ll be glad you did! In Christ s Service, Fr.

4 Dear Parishioners, Father Nick s Letter Αγαπητά Μέλη της Κοινότητας, September is once again upon us and the start of a new Ecclesiastical Year! Welcome back! I hope and pray that all of you had an enjoyable summer and were able to spend more time with your family and friends either here or abroad. As we prepare for the school year, let us re-focus and commit ourselves to a more active role in our church. This means that we must prioritize our time wisely in order to give God the time HE deserves from us. Are we too busy with our everyday lives to participate? If we try to overload our schedules outside of church then yes, we will NOT have the time for church and church activities. But, if we choose (remember, it s a choice we make) to participate in the life of the church, then, we are able to make the time and fulfill both our spiritual and secular obligations!! Pray on this, then make a choice. Our weekly gathering to worship our Lord, as I stated above, should be first and foremost. If we make only one real commitment this year, let s commit to coming to church more often. Make this commitment and keep it, and the rest of your worries and stresses will fall into place! Sunday school teachers have met, and have begun to prepare for the upcoming Religious Education we will provide to our youth. The Goya, Jr. Goya and Hope & Joy Advisers have met and the Fall calendar looks vibrant for our children! Spiritual meetings and retreats have been planned, along with Trips, outings and group sporting enjoyment. Dance troupe will soon begin to offer practices and classes to continue our appreciation for our cultural roots. As you can see, the church ministries are in full swing as our community prepares for yet another great year! On Sunday September 9 th, following the Divine Liturgy, the Parish Council invites all of you to share fellowship at the annual welcome back picnic, where we will have sections set up for registration of the various ministries of the church. The food and fellowship will be great, and it s a great way to get reacquainted with everyone after the long summer break. I hope to see all of our children and the parent s there!! God Bless all of you and I look forward to seeing everyone back in church.

Looking forward in September we have the AHEPA sponsored Comedy Night featuring BASILE, which is sure to be a fun time for all who attend. To purchase tickets you can call the church office or talk to any Parish Council member or AHEPA member. Save the date for Saturday, September 15 th starting at 7pm. Please let s all try to attend, as some of the proceeds will benefit our Parish. Moving on into September we will have our 5 th Annual Golf Tournament that will take place on Monday, September 24 th. If you would like to be one of Holy Trinity s sponsors, please pick up a brochure or use the flyer in this bulletin and send it to the Church office or give it to any Parish Council member. You can also come just for the dinner or to volunteer in any way just contact the church office and let us know! All the proceeds of this tournament will benefit our Parish and its ministries. By this time, you should have received a letter concerning the dedication brick/paver Memorial Garden. The Parish Council made some slight adjustments that are explained in the letter. We are in the process of making the final plans for this Memorial Garden and hope to have it completed by the end of October We hope you will be pleased with its new location and that you will want to be a part of this everlasting memorial site. Looking forward to serving you in the coming year, Sincerely, Georgia Halakos The Presidents Page 9 STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM STEWARDSHIP THEME: I CARE ENOUGH STEWARDSHIP IS GIVING BACK TO GOD What does the Bible say about Stewardship? Give with regularity in proportion: Upon the first day of the week let everyone of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him 1 Corinthians 16:2 Give liberally: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6 Give cheerfully: Let everyone give as his heart tells him, neither grudgingly, nor under compulsion, for God loves the man that gives cheerfully. 2 Corinthians 9:7 Stewardship is learning how to be responsible and a concerned caretaker of Christ s Church our Holy Trinity Parish. It is learning how to enjoy Parish life and be happy in our Parish work for in her dwells the fullness of the spirit of God. Stewardship is caring for the needs of others our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ of our Holy Trinity Parish. Stewardship is what a person does after saying I BELIEVE as proof of that belief. Stewardship is a way of life which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts which they have been blessed. A Steward is an active participate in the life of the Parish. The Parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to carefully review his/her personal circumstances and make a commitment of TIME, TALENTS and TREASURES to support the Parish and her ministries. Stewardship is devotion and service to God and His Church our Parish as persons and as families. Stewardship is our active commitment to use ALL of our Time, Talents and Treasures for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgment of Christ s redeeming love. Be Generous Your Parish needs your TIME, TALENTS and TREASURES. We ask that you please consider how much you depend on your Parish to be there for you. The only way your Parish can provide what you need is through your consistent and generous support of your TIME, TALENTS and TREASURES. If you have not offered your 2012 Stewardship Financial Pledge as of today, we ask that you submit it as soon as possible. We are almost in the final quarter of the year and we are over $200,000 short of 2012 Stewardship Financial Goal amount. Study the chart below and see where you fit in. Without your support our ministries cannot continue to function. Are you giving back to God? $50 per week = $2,600 annually $45 per week = $2,340 annually $40 per week = $2,080 annually $35 per week = $1,820 annually $30 per week = $1,560 annually $25 per week = $1,300 annually ** $20 per week = $1,040 annually ** This amount is needed to meet the most minimal budget. It does not provide for building or property maintenance, improvements, or any savings for long term planning. Sincerely, Your Holy Trinity Stewardship Committee

18 F. for Y. your I. information Q. What is the origin of the Ecclesiastical (Church) New Year? A. On September 1 st of each year our Holy Orthodox Church commemorates the beginning of the Ecclesiastical (Church) New Year or as it is known The Feast of the Indiction. This date begins the calendrical cycle of our Holy Orthodox Church. As such, it is a date that marks new beginnings and renewed opportunities for our spiritual growth through our worship of the Triune God. In the liturgical calendar of the Orthodox Church this day inaugurates an annual cycle of worship. Which complements our lives with order and structure, and reflects and informs the teaching of the Church concerning the relationship of humanity to God, our Creator, and to the natural world. From the 1 st of September to the 31 st of August, every day that comes is connected with a specific religious experience related either to the life of the Lord, the Virgin Mary, or the Saints. The cycle of these observances and the composition of the devotional services that are related to them have their beginning on the 1 st of September primarily because, before the adoption of the Julian calendar, the Romans began their year on the 1 st of September. The Byzantines followed this Roman tradition of observing the beginning of the year on Sept. 1. The modern Jewish calendar starts in September, but on a variable date. Therefore, it is accurate to say that the Orthodox tradition of observing the beginning of the Church year on Sept. 1 st is based on the Roman-Byzantine Calendar rather than on the Jewish calendar. Another reason for choosing this date is because the Romans would collect the taxes from its citizen s because they had just completed their harvesting of their crops. This tradition also continued into the Byzantine times. The purpose of the liturgical year was to bring to the minds of believers the teachings of the Gospel and the main events of Christian history in a certain order. Each liturgical feast renews and in some sense actualizes the events of which it is a symbol; it takes this event out of the past and makes it immediate. The liturgical year is, for us, a special means of union with Christ. In the liturgical year, we are called to relive the whole life of Christ: from Christmas to Pascha, from Pascha to Pentecost, we are exhorted to unite ourselves to Christ in His Birth and in His growth, to Christ suffering, to Christ dying, to Christ in triumph. The liturgical year includes the cycle of feasts of the Saints, for the Saints are glorified members of Christ. Their sanctity is but a shining ray of the holiness of Christ Himself. To celebrate the feast of a Saint is to celebrate a special grace that flows from Christ to that saint and so to us. On Sept. 1 of each year, the Church makes a solemn declaration to the world: to proclaim with Her devotional services, teachings, and works of philanthropy that Jesus is the Master of all time, the King of the Universe, and more especially, the Lord of our lives. We hope to see you there!! 19 The Nativity of the Theotokos ~ September 8 The most Holy Virgin Mary was born at a time when people had reached such a degree of moral decay, that it seemed altogether impossible to restore them. People often said that God must come into the world to restore faith and not permit the ruin of mankind. The Son of God chose to take on human nature for the salvation of mankind, and chose as His mother the All-Pure Virgin Mary, who alone was worthy to give birth to the source of purity and holiness. The Nativity of our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary is celebrated by the Church as a day of universal joy. Within the context of the Old and New Testaments, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary was born on this radiant day, having been chosen before the ages by divine providence to bring about the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God. She is revealed as the Mother of the Savoir of the World, our Lord Jesus Christ. The most Holy Virgin Mary was born in the small city of Galilee, Nazareth. Her parents were righteous Joachim of the tribe of the Prophet King David, and Anna from the tribe of the first Priest Aaron. The couple was without child, since St. Anna was barren. Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did not lose hope in God s mercy. They had strong faith that for God everything is possible, and that he would be able to overcome the barrenness of Anna even in her old age, as he had once overcome the barrenness of Sarah, spouse of the Patriarch Abraham. Sts. Joachim and Anna vowed to dedicate the child which the Lord might give them, to the service of God in the Temple. Childlessness was considered among the Hebrew nation as a divine punishment for sin, and therefore the righteous Sts. Joachim and Anna had to endure abuse from their own countrymen. On one of the feast days at the Temple in Jerusalem the elderly Joachim brought his sacrifice to offer to God, but the High Priest would not accept it, considering him to be unworthy since he was childless. St Joachim, in deep grief, went into the wilderness, and there he prayed with tears to the Lord for a child. St. Anna wept bitterly when she learned what had happened at the Jerusalem Temple. Never once did she complain against the Lord, but rather she prayed to ask God s mercy on her family. The Lord fulfilled her petitions when the pious couple had attained extreme old age and prepared themselves by virtuous life for a sublime calling: to be the parents of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the future Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Archangel Gabriel brought Joachim and Anna the joyous message that their prayer was heard by God, and of them would be born a most blessed daughter Mary, through whom would come the Salvation of the world. The Most Holy Virgin Mary surpassed in purity and virtue not only mankind, but also the angels. She was manifest as the living Temple of God, so the Church sings in its festal hymns: the East Gate bringing Christ into the world for the salvation of our souls (2 nd Sticharion on Lord, I have cried, Tone 6). The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the change of times when the great and comforting promises of God for the salvation of the human race from the slavery to the devil are about to be fulfilled. This event has brought to earth the grace of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of truth, piety, virtue, and everlasting life. The Theotokos is revealed to all of us by grace as a merciful intercessor and Mother, to whom we have recourse with filial devotion. Elevation of the Cross ~ September 14 As important as any of the feast days commemorating the exalted saints of the Church is the feast day held annually on September 14 in special tribute to the Cross of Jesus Christ, the reproduction of which is worn or displayed in every corner of the earth as a symbol of the mightiest faith in all the universe. The two timbers in which the Messiah died to save the world, priceless beyond measure, is the most familiar and beloved symbol in a world full of symbols and emblems. For nearly three hundred years after his death, the Cross was buried in obscurity, eventually to be salvaged through the efforts of a devout Byzantine emperor and his mother. The Emperor Constantine the great was not only the first Christian Emperor, but together with his mother has been honored with sainthood, the latter for her determined efforts in the cause of Christianity. It was Constantine who beheld a vision in the sky in which were emblazoned the words En Touto Nika, translating into In this Conqueror, etched across a brilliant Cross of Jesus Christ. Ordering that all shields of his army bear the sign of the cross, Constantine went on to subdue the enemies of the state and to establish the Christian Faith, which has outlived his empire and will endure forever. Helen, the mother of Constantine and a saint of the church, had the full support of her son when she decided to recover the Cross of Christ, and although nearly three hundred years had elapsed since the Crucifixion, she was optimistic in her resolve to find the cross and return it to the city of Constantinople. After months of diligent search, painstakingly following every historic clue as to its whereabouts, Helen and her dedicated group of searchers discovered the cross on September 14, 325 in the vicinity of Golgotha, where it had been buried in the dust of the centuries. On the spot where the cross was discovered there was found to grow a hitherto unknown flower of rare beauty and fragrance which has been named Vasiliko (Basil), meaning the flower of royalty, out of respect to the Dowager Queen who led the expedition. This flower, since that memorable day over 1600 years ago, has been the official flower of the Orthodox Christian Church and is in evidence when clergymen engage in the age-old tradition of blessing homes or the waters on which seamen ply their trade. Helen afterwards made countless pilgrimages to the Holy Land and was responsible for the establishment of Churches at the sites of the Nativity, the Holy Sepulcher and the Ascension, and at many other places. For the next three hundred years the Cross stayed in the possession of the Christian contingents sent from various parts of the empire to watch over it, but after a series of forays the city of Jerusalem was captured by the Persians in 614 and the Cross fell into the hands of the enemy that for years prior and since scoffed at the Faith of Jesus Christ. Several attempts were made by devout and bold Christians to recover the precious Cross, but they were no match for the Persian hordes. Finally, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclitos, in the tradition of his ancestor Constantine, amassed an army of size and equipment to match that of the Persians and after months of planning launched an attack on the Holy City but with no immediate success. What the Persians lacked in faith they made up for in numbers of trained warriors who respected nothing but the sword, and because of this relentless defense the tide of battle wavered over an agonizing fifteen years until at last the Christian forces broke through the Persian defenses and regained control of the Holy City and its priceless treasure. The successful outcome of the campaign is celebrated jointly with the finding of the Cross by St. Helen on September 14, and the veneration of the Precious and Life-giving Cross and is again celebrated by Christians on the third Sunday of Lent. With the sign of the cross so much in evidence in the daily life of the Christian, the celebration seems to extend over every minute of every day of every year, but the official days underscore the magnitude of the Cross in the Christian concept.

20 St. Sophia and her Three Daughters: ~ Sts. Faith, Hope, and Charity ~ September 17 The story of a second-century Roman mother who sacrificed herself and her three children in the name of Jesus Christ is not the often repeated family tale, principally because it is anything but a bedtime story, which for sheer horror is unsurpassed even in the imaginations of today s writers of grisly screen scenarios. It would be far better to tell of the family delights and Christian fidelity and to mention in passing that they were put to death for their faith, but the stark truth has to be faced to underscore the depth of belief in the Savior. The Spiritual attainment of this family alone is positive proof that Christianity transcends every aspect of human life to focus on the eternity of the soul. The mother of this rare family bore the classical Greek name of Sophia; her three daughters bear the familiar anglicized names of Faith, Hope, and Charity. This quartet of frail females stood up to the brutal might of Rome at a time when a mere whisper of dissent could mean death to a Roman citizen, Christian or pagan. Sophia was a widow under whose loving care three daughters acquired a poise and Christian virtue looked upon with respect by the village which they left for a more rewarding city life of Rome, the eternal city where Christians had firm roots and where Christians could melt in the crowds and escape persecution. Sophia and her three lovely little girls milled about unobtrusively in the teeming city, but in the Christian community that gathered n candlelight in the catacombs to worship the Messiah, they became highly respected figures, the children all the more so because of their display of deep devotion to the Savior and to their mother. In the dark recesses of the subterranean shelters, the family drew themselves closer to God and to their fellow man emerging into the light to convert others, who perceived the glow of happiness which was not to be found in the pagan temples nor in the company of those who shared their spiritual darkness. Fate decreed that this blessed family would be called upon to assert their faith in an incredibly monstrous test of Christian endurance. The Emperor Hadrian did not share the majority view that Christianity was a harmless form of worship practiced by patriotic Romans, but looked upon them as enemies of the state whose Kingdom of Heaven sought to displace his authority. He instituted a sweeping wave of persecution with an army of operatives infiltrating all sections of the city, spinning a giant web, which caught up with Sophia and her children. Not even the most hardened pagans anticipated that three girls, aged twelve, ten and nine respectively, would be punished for what could be construed as the offense of the mother. The magistrate Antiochos on the other hand saw in the arrest of the entire family an opportunity to wrest from the mother a disavowal of Christ rather than allow her flesh and blood to be punished. Sophia and her three daughters appeared as a group before the judgment of the pagan court which offered to release the entire family providing that the mother deny the Savior and raise her children as pagans. All three daughters looked up to their mother to assure her that they would remain as steadfast Christians with her and that she should feel no guilt should they be put to death. The agonized Sophia was torn between the love for her children and the love for Jesus Christ. She turned to the court to plead that her children be released, and they could inflict their tortures upon her. In a chorus of small voices that would have melted the flintiest of hearts the youngsters cried out to their mother that they would rather join her in death to be reunited in the Kingdom of God than to remain behind without her. Sophia s glance at the magistrate told her the next move was his. Incredibly the magistrate was unmoved and ordered the first of the girls Faith, to be put before the eyes of her mother, and when that brought not the anguished pleas for mercy but the praises of the Lord, the devout Faith was put to the sword. Hope followed her sister in death, as did her sister Charity, three innocents whose horrified mother was dragged to the side of the bodies, over which she continued to pray as she dies for the Lord. The commemoration of these sweet saints on September 17 has an added solemnity when their complete story is unfolded. NEED KOLLYVA??? We have 4 people in our Parish you can call... 21 HOLY TRINITY FOOD PANTRY BRING A CAN TO CHURCH SUNDAY Since September 1, 2011, each 2 nd Sunday of the Month has been declared Bring a Can to Church Sunday and we ask that every member who attends the Divine Liturgy bring one or more canned goods to donate to our Holy Trinity Food Pantry. If every member who attends Divine Liturgy on the 2 nd Sunday of the month would bring a can or two, we would be able to truly support our Holy Trinity Food Pantry to the best of our ability. Our Holy Trinity Food Pantry supports the following organizations: St. Stephens, Sunday Breakfast Mission, The Salvation Army and Claymont Community Center. We all have been blessed by God to provide food for ourselves and our family but there are those who are unable. By donating one or two cans of food will truly make an unbelievable difference in the life of those who are less fortunate. You may place your cans in one of the two baskets placed within our Church: 1. In the basket in the Narthex 2. In the basket outside the Church Office We thank you for your support of this Project and we hope it will become a great success in the months and years to come. May our Lord bless you with all good things that come from above. Please note that throughout the summer months 57 bags of food were delivered to the various Food Pantries listed above. Thank you for your continued generosity and support! August 12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room East The luncheon meal on Sunday August, 12th was very graciously donated and sponsored by Mrs. Susie Kelleher and family, in honor and memory of Mr. Jimmy Michaels. Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas August 15 th August 15 th is a very special day for the Greek men and women throughout the world. It is the day of the Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, it is the other Mother's Day. Some of the biggest churches of Orthodoxy have been dedicated to the Assumption of Theotokos, such as the Megalochari (The Great Gracious) of Tinos and Panagia of Soumela. She is the Virgin Mary and the Sweet Kissing Mother. Like almost every year, also this year I happen to celebrate the Assumption of Theotokos in Greece. But this year's celebration was different from the celebration of the past years. The usual big crowd of faithful Greeks got together not only in Tinos but also in all the churches dedicated to Her. However, the piety of the faithful was mixed with their concern for tomorrow, the worrisome future. The economic crisis had removed something from the usual joy of this great day of Christendom. However, the decoration of churches with Byzantine and Greek flags and faith of the Greeks that with her assistance they will overcome the financial crisis made me smile. Over the past 30 years, some powerful individuals and groups have tried to make the Greeks forget their history and religion, but no matter how hard they have tried at the end they did not succeed. The reference of the Syros Prefecture Metropolitan Dorotheus to the torpedoing of Elli Destroyer by the Italians on 15 th August 1940 and the reminder to the world of the sacrifice of the Greeks in the Second World War was an indication that the material prosperity of recent years has not dimmed our spirit. What has saved us in all difficult moments of our history was the knowledge of our history and our faith that God will help us. Financial crises have been in the past and will be in the future. No economic crisis though will be overcome without faith in ourselves, the knowledge of our history, religious faith and the destruction of our institutions. It is so comforting to see, that the crisis has strengthened the institution of the family and the faith that the Church is not our enemy but our friend and refuge. By the way, as it has happened for so many centuries the sky is always blue, the sea is clear, the food delicious, and the Acropolis showing to the world who we are and where we come from.
