Suhayda Nick Harisiadis, Protopsaltis THE SEVEN DEMONS OF MARY MAGDALENE Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out (Luke 8:2) Based on this passage from the Gospel of Luke, it had been assumed by the medieval Church in the West that Mary Magdalene was to be identified with the sinful woman from Luke 7. The Greek Fathers, however, made no such error in confusing the identities of these women. Hence, Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute, but ill. In her life, which is kept in the Great Lavra Monastery in Mount Athos, the following is said regarding the seven demons: When you hear of seven demons think of the opposing spirits of the seven virtues. Namely, the spirit of fearlessness of God, the spirit of imprudence, the spirit of ignorance, the spirit of falsehood, the spirit of vanity, the spirit of elation, the spirit of beauty. All these are contrary to the opposing virtues. For every sin has its demon, or rather the spirit gives its energy. Theophanes Kerameus ( ) writes: Let no one think that Mary had seven demons. But it is just as the gifts of the Holy Spirit are synonymously called seven spirits, as the great Isaiah numbered them: The spirit of wisdom and prudence, the spirit of counsel, the spirit of might and knowledge and reverence and fear of God (Is 11:2-3). Thus the energies of the demons are also called demons. Despondency, thriftness, contempt, envy, falsehood, greed and every passion is synonymous with the demon that begat it. Whoever is dominated by these passions, is possessed by demons. Therefore, it was not all unlikely and impossible for Mary Magdalene to be possessed by seven passions, from which she was redeemed and became a disciple of the Savior. Therefore, the benevolent and merciful Lord healed Mary through His grace and freed her from seven demons, which are synonymous with seven passions that are energies of evil spirit. Thankful for the great benefaction, she left everything and became a follower of her Savior and Teacher, together with the Twelve. She abandoned all inclination towards wickedness and became adorned with every virtue and goodness. In the history of the church and New Testament, Mary was never a prostitute. According to Nikephoros Xanthopoulos, in his Discourse on the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles and Myrrhbearer Magdalene that she was raised in a wealthy and philanthropic family who loved God. Mary indulged herself with the study of Scripture and the prophecies concerning the Messiah. Her parents died when she was young, and she was inspired to live a life of chastity. She spent her time in, fasting, praying studying, asceticism. She acquired all the vitures. The devil, who wants to keep humanity bound to their sins and passions, sent seven spirits against her that battled for her soul, but the Lord delivered her. Therefore, Mary Magdalene is looked upon by the Orthodox Church as not a sinful woman, but as one who was sick by the demonic onslaughts that battled against her. And when she encountered the Messiah, and the signs and miracles which followed, she was healed by Him. This inspired her to follow Christ faithfully to the end, serving Him, the disciples and also having a close relationship with the Theotokos. She reposed in peace in the city of Ephesus and was buried by the Evangelist John the Theologian. She kept her purity intact becoming for all generations of Christianity a model of purity. HOW TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION Orthodox Christians in good standing are encouraged to receive Holy Communion frequently, provided they have prepared themselves spiritually, mentally and physically. They must be on time for the Divine Liturgy, and be in a Christ-like, calm state of mind. They should be in a confession relationship with their priest or spiritual father, and they should have selfexamined their conscience. On the day of receiving Holy Communion, it is not proper to eat or drink anything before coming to church. When you approach to receive Holy Communion, state your Christian (baptismal) name clearly, and hold the red communion cloth to your chin. After receiving, wipe your lips on the cloth, step back carefully, hand the cloth to the next person and make the sign of the Cross as you step away. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." 7 Ανακοινώσεις STEWARDSHIP 2017 Εαν δεν έχετε συμπληρώσει την κάρτα προσφοράς σας για το 2017, παρακαλούμε όπως επιληφθείτε το συντομότερο. Δεν έχουμε θέσει όρια, αλλά αληθινό stewardship σημαί -νει να δίνoυμε ανάλογα των εισοδημάτων μας. Το επίπεδο προσφοράς του stewardship θα πρέπει να είναι ένα ποσό που θα αντιπροσωπεύει την αυξανόμενη αγάπη μας προς τον Θεό και την εκτίμησή μας δια τις ευλογίες και όλα τα καλά που μας προσφέρει η εκκλησία μας!
