Ἔτσι θὰ σᾶς χορηγηθῇ πλουσίως ἡ εἴσοδος εἰς τὴν αἰωνίαν βασιλείαν τοῦ Κυρίου μας καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Διὰ τοῦτο, δὲν θὰ ἀμελήσω νὰ σᾶς ὑπενθυμίζω αὐτὰ πάντοτε, ἂν καὶ τὰ ξέρετε καὶ εἶσθε στερεοὶ εἰς τὴν ἀλήθειαν, ποὺ ἤδη ἔχετε. Νομίζω εἶναι δίκαιον, ἐφ ὅσον εἶμαι εἰς τοῦτο τὸ σῶμα, νὰ σᾶς ξυπνάω μὲ ὑπομνήσεις, ἐπειδὴ ξέρω ὅτι γρήγορα θὰ τὸ ἀποβάλω, ὅπως καὶ ὁ Κύριός μας Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς μοῦ ἐφανέρωσε. Ἀλλὰ θὰ φροντίσω νὰ ἔχετε τὰ μέσα ὥστε, καὶ ὅταν θὰ ἔχω φύγει, νὰ θυμᾶστε αὐτὰ πάντοτε. Διότι σᾶς ἐγνωστοποιήσαμεν τὴν δύναμιν καὶ τὴν ἔλευσιν τοῦ Κυρίου μας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὄχι ἀκολουθήσαντες ἐντέχνους μύθους, ἀλλ ἐπειδὴ εἴδαμε μὲ τὰ μάτια μας τὴν μεγαλειότητά του, ὅταν ἔλαβε ἀπὸ τὸν Θεὸν Πατέρα τιμὴν καὶ δόξαν, καὶ ἦλθε εἰς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τὴν μεγαλοπρεπῆ δόξαν μιὰ τέτοια φωνή: αὐτὸς εἶναι ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητὸς, εἰς τὸν ὁποῖον ἐγὼ εὐαρεστοῦμαι. Τὴν φωνὴν αὐτὴν ἐμεῖς ἀκούσαμε νὰ ἔρχεται ἀπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν, ὅταν ἤμαστε μαζί του εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ ἅγιον. Καὶ ἔτσι ἔχομεν μεγαλυτέραν βεβαίωσιν διὰ τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον, εἰς τὸν ὁποῖον καλὰ κάνετε νὰ δίνετε προσοχήν, σὰν σὲ ἕνα λυχνάρι ποὺ φωτίζει μέσα σὲ σκοτεινὸν μέρος, ἕως ὅτου γλυκοχαράξῃ ἡ ἡμέρα καὶ ὁ αὐγερινὸς ἀνατείλῃ στὶς καρδιές σας. EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Peter's Second Universal Letter 1:10-19 BRETHREN, be more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall; so there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore I intend always to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. And I will see to it that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Καὶ μεταμορφώθηκε μπροστά τους καὶ ἔλαμψε τὸ πρόσωπόν του ὅπως ὁ ἥλιος, τὰ δὲ ἐνδύματά του ἔγιναν ἄσπρα σὰν τὸ φῶς. Καὶ ἐμφανίσθηκαν εἰς αὐτοὺς ὁ Μωϋσὴς καὶ ὁ Ἠλίας, οἱ ὁποίοι συνωμιλοῦσαν μαζί του. Τότε ελαβε τὸν λόγον ὁ Πέτρος καὶ εἶπε εἰς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, «Κύριε, καλὸν εἶναι νὰ μείνωμε ἐδῶ. Ἐὰν θέλεις, ἂς κάνωμεν ἐδῶ τρεῖς σκηνές, μίαν γιὰ σένα, μίαν διὰ τὸν Μωϋσὴν καὶ μίαν διὰ τὸν Ἠλίαν». And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead." Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 11 Why Do We Bless Grapes for the Feast of the Transfiguration? In the ancient Church, during the offering of bread and wine by the faithful, or the celebration of the Mystery of the Divine Eucharist, other products were also offered and blessed, such as wheat, oil, honey, grapes and other fruits, as well as milk, cheese, produce, flowers, and even animals. The first ecclesiastical reaction to this old habit comes to us from the 3rd Apostolic Canon, which, in order to preserve the biblical-apostolic tradition of the offering of only bread and wine at the Divine Eucharist, it prohibited the habit derived from the Old Testament Law of sacrificing animals in the sanctuary, as well as the offering of eucharistic fruits and products during the Divine Liturgy. This Canon in regards to the eucharistic gifts only allows the offering of new green wheat (new wheat stalks) and grapes, with the understanding that such an offering is made for "the appropriate time", that is, the time of the ripening of fruits, "not offered as a sacrifice, but as the first-fruits of sweet fruit". This annual offering of wheat and grapes, as a blessing of first-fruits, had the character of being a thanksgiving to God, "Who has given them to us for our sustenance and healing". The Synod of Carthage (419) insisted on separating the outer-eucharistic goods from the offering and oblation of the Divine Liturgy. In the 37th and 44th Canons of this Synod it was decided not to mix the first-fruits of bread and wine with either honey or milk, but they are to be blessed separately "for they conflict with the sanctification of the Lord's Body and Blood". The mutual offering of "grapes and wheat" alone was allowed, in the sense that they were always the first-fruits and not a sacrifice, just like the previous Apostolic Canon mentioned. In some churches, however, the priests continued, until the end of the seventh century at least, to mix grape juice with the Divine Eucharist, and "according to a custom which has long prevailed... distributed both to the people at the same time". This matter was discussed at the Sixth Ecumenical Synod in Trullo (Quinisext or Penthekti, 691), which in its 28th Canon ruled that grapes are to be regarded as first-fruits so "the priests may bless them apart [from the offering of the oblation] and distribute them to such as seek them as an act of thanksgiving". In other words, they are blessed separately and given to the faithful, apparently after the Divine Liturgy "to Him Who is the Giver of the fruits by which our bodies are sustained and fed according to His divine decree". Prayers for the first-fruits have been preserved in our liturgical tradition from the third century, and we also encounter in liturgical manuscripts the "Prayer for the Offering of First-Fruits" or "Prayer Upon Offering New Fruits", such as, for example, grapes, figs, pomegranates, apples, peaches, etc. These short texts are full of thanksgiving to God, Who gives "every fruit for the gladness and nourishment of humanity". Man offers in return the "first-fruits", believing that this offering is received from God. Through the offering of the first-produce, there is kept alive the memorial and communion of the gifts of God, and of course the taste and hope of eternal treasures and pleasure. With this ancient tradition, especially with the act of blessing the harvest, they are related to two characteristic ceremonies of the Byzantine Euchologion (Book of Prayers) and the imperial etiquette of Constantinople. The first ceremony is testified to in the oldest liturgical codex, the Berberini Euchologion 336 (8th- 9th cent.), titled "Prayer by the Patriarch, When the Harvest is Usually Performed by the King". From subsequent codexes we are informed that this ceremony, which had two prayers for the kings, took place in the 11

12 Church of Blachernae at the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, on August 15th. The importance of this fact is shown by the presence of the emperor who, as usual, performed the beginning of the harvest and offered the Patriarch the new fruit of the vine. Balsamon mentions this fact, who clearly connects this with the annual offering of first-fruits, especially of grapes, after the Divine Liturgy. The second ceremony of the harvest is testified to and described by Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitos ( ) in his Book of Ceremonies in the chapter "All That Has Been Preserved for the Day of Harvest to be Done in Iereia". Outside the palace, therefore, in Iereia (Fenerbahçe), a region located on the Asiatic side of the Bosporus, and before the rulers, officials and the emperor, the Patriarch, on the day of harvest, wearing his phelonion and omophorion, blessed the grapes with the special prayer "during the church service". In this ceremony, which was accompanied with improvised hymns, there was an exchange of grapes between the Patriarch and the emperor, as well as a meal, emphasizing the harmonious coexistence of secular and ecclesiastical power, and it had the character of a reaction against pagan Dionysian elements which prevailed at the time during the harvest, the pressing the grapes and the storage of new wine in jars. Therefore, it is clear that the Church in accordance with an old habit always blessed the harvest and the grapes, exactly like it did with the first-fruits and first-produce. There is even a Canon requiring the blessing of wheat and grapes before they are consumed by the faithful. A precise continuation of this tradition is the blessing of the grapes on August 6th, the feast of the Transfiguration. There has survived even a special prayer, which is testified to in manuscripts from the tenth century under various titles, such as "Prayer of the Grapes", "Prayer for the Partaking of Grapes", "Prayer for Grapes and All Fruits" and "Prayer for the Vines and Grapes". It is a simple and brief prayer, by which the Church thanks God, that through "temperate seasons, showers of rain, and calm weather" by His good-pleasure, "we who partake thereof may be filled with joy; and upon those who offer this fruit of the vine for use at Thy Holy Table, may it confer forgiveness of sins, through the sacred and holy Body and Blood of Thy Christ". As we can see, there is a clear link between the grapes and the Divine Eucharist. In later manuscripts there is testimony of another "Prayer for the First-Fruits of Grapes and Figs on the 6th of the Month of August on the Feast of the Transfiguration". It refers only to the blessing of the grapes and a clear reference to spiritual freedom granted by Christ and the eucharistic life. However, there is not a clear moment when the blessing of the grapes, which is an ancient tradition, became associated with the feast of the Transfiguration. If we consider that this feast, which is among the most ancient of the Christian Church, was officially known in Jerusalem from the seventh century, and was in the Byzantine calendar in the ninth century, we cannot exclude that this association was from the beginning. Besides at that time, the end of the seventh century, there took place, as we saw, the definitive separation of the first-fruits from the offering of the eucharistic gifts. Of course the question is ultimately why we bless grapes on the feast of the Transfiguration. In the relatively old liturgical typikon of Kasoulon (12th cent.), it is noted that the blessing of the grapes took place by the Priest on the 15th of August, after the Divine Liturgy. Something similar was done, as we saw, in Constantinople when on August 15th the Patriarch blessed the grapes in the Church of Blachernae in the presence of the emperor. Most sources connect the blessing of the grapes with the Transfiguration. The Typikon Rule of Saint Neilos, a Hieromonk of the 13th century, says that "on this day we eat grapes, as the Church shows in the 12

13 typikon". The Typikon of Saint Savvas considers it also a tradition of the Fathers that the blessing of grapes be on the feast of the Transfiguration. The same is true for the Typikon of Riga, which even determines exactly at what point of the Divine Liturgy this blessing takes place: "After the prayer before the ambon, we chant the apolytikion of the feast and the kontakion and the priest of the Lord prays and blesses through the ordained prayer the grapes placed before the icon of Christ". It appears that the time for the blessing of the grapes depended on the conditions of the climate of each region and the period the fruits of these places matured. Therefore, it is not surprising the fact that in one place the grapes were blessed on August 15th and elsewhere on August 6th. Indeed, according to hagiographic sources the offering of grapes took place also on the feast of the Exaltation of the Honorable Cross on September 14th. However, apart from the climatic conditions, it is very likely that the association of the blessing of the grapes with the Transfiguration was contributed by the old historical origins of this feast. The Jerusalem Typikon correlates the feast of the Transfiguration with the Jewish feast of Tabernacles, and it is no coincidence that one of the readings of the feast, which was read at that time in Jerusalem, speaks exactly of the multiplication of the gardens, the vines and the fig trees. The blessing of the grapes during the Transfiguration is understood, also, through a theological, anthropological and cosmological dimension of this feast. The Lord "after six days" or "about eight days" after the prediction of His Passion, "on a high mountain... was transfigured before them (Peter, James and John) and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light". This is the Creator of the world, as well as the Ruler of the eschaton. He is the vine "Who has His root in the heavens, the branches are on earth, the body is a vine branch but without a root, a vine that after three days the branches hold the cluster of the resurrection". It is natural, therefore, that with the Transfiguration of the Lord the whole world is illumined and glorified. Creation is exhilarated and acquires the brilliance that creation at one time had. For this reason creation responds with thanksgiving for this gift and this hope, it references its Creator and thanks Him, and the Church in the most appropriate feast is wont to bless the world and the harvest, Creation and the Eschaton, with renewal and hope, confirming the renewal that began with God, and passing through nature it leads to the salvation of man. The blessing of the grapes, representing the harvest of the world, is a liturgical act that emphasizes the doxological and eucharistic offering of the material and the fruits of the earth to the Creator and God of all things. More so, when this fruit of the vine gives us wine, which Christ blessed in Cana, to show the transfiguration of the world in Christ, He also gave it to us in the Mystical Supper as the element that, with bread, at the time of the Divine Liturgy, are made incorrupt by grace, transformed into the Lord's "Body and Blood", the Divine Eucharist. Besides this, the blessing of the grapes stresses the need for our continuous spiritual fruit-bearing and the transfiguring journey of man, so that "proving that those who excel in the height of their virtues shall be made worthy of divine glory". 16 Eορτή της Μεταμορφώσεως Μία από τις μεγάλες Δεσποτικές λεγόμενες εορτές είναι η Μεταμόρφωση του Κυρίου: εκεί που στο όρος Θαβώρ ο Κύριος, έχοντας πάρει μαζί Του τους «προκρίτους των μαθητών», τον Πέτρο, τον Ιάκωβο και τον Ιωάννη, «μετεμορφώθη έμπροσθεν αυτών», δηλαδή το πρόσωπό Του έλαμψε σαν τον ήλιο, τα ενδύματά Του έγιναν λευκά σαν το φως, δίπλα Του φάνηκαν οι προφήτες Μωϋσής και Ηλίας, ενώ ακούστηκε άνωθεν, από τον ουρανό, η φωνή του Θεού Πατέρα, η οποία έλεγε «Ούτός εστιν ο Υιός μου ο αγαπητός, αυτού ακούετε». Όλη αυτή η θεοφάνεια, η οποία βεβαίως θυμίζει και το «σκηνικό» της Βάπτισης του Κυρίου, πραγματοποιήθηκε μέσα σε ένα νέφος το οποίο περιέλαμψε τους μαθητές, οι οποίοι μη αντέχοντας το θέαμα έπεσαν πρηνείς, ενώ κάποια στιγμή ο Πέτρος, «μη ειδώς ο ελάλει», βλέποντας και τους Μωϋσή και Ηλία να συνομιλούν με τον Κύριο, είπε σ Αυτόν: «Κύριε, καλόν εστιν ημάς ώδε είναι». Μετά από λίγο, το συγκλονιστικό αυτό θέαμα και άκουσμα τελείωσε, κι ο Κύριος παίρνοντας τους έκθαμβους μαθητές τούς είπε να μην ειπούν τίποτε, έως ότου αναστηθεί εκ των νεκρών, προλέγοντας ταυτοχρόνως και τα γεγονότα του Πάθους Του. Θα έλεγε κανείς ότι σ αυτό το γεγονός έχουμε συμπυκνωμένη τη θεολογία της Εκκλησίας μας, περί της φύσεως του Ιησού Χριστού, περί του σκοπού της ενανθρωπήσεώς Του, περί της ανακαινίσεως του σύμπαντος κόσμου, περί της σχέσεώς Του με την Παλαιά Διαθήκη, θέματα με τα οποία ασχολήθηκαν οι Πατέρες μας ιδίως του 14ου αι., και μάλιστα ο μεγάλος Πατέρας και Διδάσκαλος άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς, όταν δόθηκε η αφορμή από αιρετικούς, οι οποίοι αναφάνηκαν και αλλοίωσαν τη θεολογία της Εκκλησίας, και τα οποία η Εκκλησία μας πάντοτε τα ζει και τα προβάλλει στην πνευματική της ζωή. Ορισμένα από αυτά θα σχολιάσουμε στη συνέχεια: 1. Καταρχάς θα πρέπει να διευκρινίσουμε αυτό που τονίζει η Πατερική μας παράδοση: Η Μεταμόρφωση του Χριστού στην πραγματικότητα είναι Μεταμόρφωση των ίδιων των μαθητών: ο Χριστός, ων πάντοτε Θεός και άνθρωπος, έχοντας ενωμένες τις δύο Του φύσεις «ασυγχύτως, ατρέπτως, αδιαιρέτως, αχωρίστως» στη μία Του θεϊκή υπόσταση-προσωπικότητα, δεν αλλάζει ποτέ: παραμένει πάντοτε ο Ίδιος. Στο γεγονός της Μεταμορφώσεως λοιπόν δεν προσλαμβάνει κάτι που δεν το είχε, αλλά αυτό που ήταν, το δίνει «κατά μέρος», να το δουν και να το νιώσουν και οι τρεις μαθητές Του. Κι αυτό που τους αποκαλύπτει είναι η θεϊκή Του δόξα. Μέχρι τότε οι μαθητές ζούσαν τον Κύριο ως άνθρωπο, ενώ ελάχιστα διαισθάνονταν τη θεϊκή Του προέλευση. Στο όρος Θαβώρ ικανώνονται από το Πνεύμα του Θεού, το Οποίο ως νέφος τους περιέλαμψε και τους άνοιξε τους πνευματικούς οφθαλμούς έχουμε και πνευματικές αισθήσεις που λειτουργούν ή όχι ανάλογα με τη σχέση που έχουμε με τον Θεό να δουν με «μετασκευασμένους» οφθαλμούς τη θεϊκή λάμψη, το «άκτιστον φως» του Χριστού. Η Μεταμόρφωση λοιπόν είναι Μεταμόρφωση των μαθητών, που με άλλα μάτια είδαν τα συγκλονιστικά του όρους Θαβώρ, δηλαδή τον Χριστό, αλλά και στη θεϊκή Του διάσταση. Την πραγματικότητα αυτή η Εκκλησία μας διαρκώς τη διαλαλεί, καθημερινά, όταν μεταξύ των άλλων μας επισημαίνει: «Εν τω φωτί Σου, Κύριε, οψόμεθα φως». Μόνον όταν ο άνθρωπος λάβει το φως του Θεού, μπορεί τότε να δει το φως του Θεού. Ο άνθρωπος «βλέπει» ανάλογα με ό,τι έχει μέσα του. 2. Όπως είπαμε, αυτά που είδαν οι μαθητές για τον Χριστό ήταν ό,τι μπορούσαν να αντέξουν. Κατά το κοντάκιο της εορτής, «Επί του όρους μετεμορφώθης, και ως εχώρουν οι μαθητές Σου, την δόξαν Σου, Χριστέ ο Θεός, εθεάσαντο». Κι είναι ευνόητο: Ο άνθρωπος είναι πεπερασμένος και ο Θεός είναι άπειρος. Επομένως ο άνθρωπος, όπως και όλη η δημιουργία, ακόμη και οι άγγελοι, όχι μόνον δεν μπορεί να δει και να μετάσχει στην ουσία του Θεού αυτό είναι μόνο για την αγία Τριάδα αλλά μπορεί να δει και να μετάσχει σ αυτό που λέμε ενέργεια του Θεού, αλλιώς στη χάρη ή τη δόξα ή το φως Του, μόνον εκ μέρους, όσο αντέχει. Αυτό που λαμβάνει όμως από τον Θεό ως παροχή της χάρης Του είναι ό,τι ανώτερο για εκείνον. Κάτι παραπάνω θα τον «διέλυε» και θα τον «σκότωνε». «Κανείς δεν μπορεί να δει τον Θεό και να ζήσει». 16

17 3. Γιατί ο Κύριος θέλησε να τους δώσει αυτήν τη χάρη, να δουν τη θεϊκή Του δόξα; Διότι μετά από λίγο ακολουθούν τα γεγονότα του Πάθους, άρα έπρεπε οι μαθητές να κατανοήσουν ότι το Πάθος ήταν εκούσιο, ότι ήταν η επιλογή του ενανθρωπήσαντος Θεού, για να σώσει το ανθρώπινο γένος, αίροντας την αμαρτία του επί του Σταυρού. Όπως το επισημαίνει το κοντάκιο και πάλι: «ίνα όταν Σε ίδωσι σταυρούμενον, το μεν πάθος νοήσωσιν εκούσιον, τω δε κόσμω κηρύξωσιν ότι συ υπάρχεις αληθώς του Πατρός το απαύγασμα». Ο Χριστός «έδει παθείν», διότι η αμαρτία του ανθρωπίνου γένους ήταν τέτοια, που μόνον ο λόγος, το κήρυγμα δεν ήταν ικανό να σώσει τους ανθρώπους. Έπρεπε να πάθει ο Ίδιος ο Θεός εν σαρκί, γεγονός που φανερώνει την τραγικότητα στην οποία είχε περιέλθει η ανθρωπότητα, αλλά και το άπειρο μέγεθος της αγάπης του Θεού απέναντι σ αυτήν. 4. Στη μέσα στο φως της λάμψης του Θεού θέα του προσώπου του Χριστού, οι μαθητές συνειδητοποιούν και την προοπτική του ανθρώπου, μετά τον ερχομό Εκείνου. Όπως φανερώθηκε ο Χριστός, σαν ήλιος πρωϊνός, έτσι θα φανερωθούμε κι εμείς κατά τη Δευτέρα Του Παρουσία, όταν ακολουθούμε τον Χριστό. Μη ξεχνάμε ότι ο Χριστός ενσωμάτωσε τον άνθρωπο στον ίδιο Του τον εαυτό, κάτι που ενεργοποιείται έκτοτε δια του αγίου βαπτίσματος και βιώνεται αυξητικά μέσα στην Εκκλησία διά των μυστηρίων και της εφαρμογής των εντολών Του, κι αυτή η ενσωμάτωση τον έκανε μέλος Του, δηλαδή δική Του προέκταση, επομένως ό,τι Ε- κείνος ζει, αυτό αποτελεί και θα αποτελέσει ζωή και των πιστών ανθρώπων. Όταν ο άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς και οι Πατέρες των Συνόδων του 14ου αι. τόνιζαν την πραγματικότητα μετοχής στο άκτιστο φως του Θεού, κατά αναλογία με ό,τι συνέβη στο όρος Θαβώρ με τους τρεις μαθητές, ήδη από τη ζωή αυτή, ας φανταστούμε την ασύλληπτη μέθεξη του πιστού σ αυτό το φως μετά τον ερχομό Του για δεύτερη φορά, όταν ο άνθρωπος όχι μόνον ως ψυχή, αλλά και με το σώμα του θα μετέχει σ Εκείνον. Τότε θα λάμψουν οι άγιοι ως ήλιος, όπως έλαμψε κι ο Χριστός. Με τη Μεταμόρφωση λοιπόν αποκαλύπτεται και το μεγαλείο της προοπτικής του ανθρώπου, αυτό που οι άγιοί μας το ονομάζουν «θέωση». 5. Σ αυτήν την ένθεη κατάσταση μετοχής στο φως του Χριστού βλέπουμε ότι ανακαινίζεται μαζί με τον άνθρωπο και η ίδια η φύση. Πώς το βλέπουμε αυτό; Μέσα από τα ενδύματα του Χριστού. Και αυτά έλαμψαν και έγιναν λευκά σαν το χιόνι. Δηλαδή, η χάρη του Χριστού μεταγγίστηκε κατά κάποιο τρόπο και στα υλικά πράγματα, σημείο μετοχής και της φύσεως, όπως είπαμε, στη δόξα του Θεού. Και τούτο γιατί η φύση δεν είναι κάτι κακό ή κατώτερο και συνεπώς αποβλητέο, αλλά στη χριστιανική πίστη αναβαθμίζεται και αυτή, βρίσκοντας την πραγματική της θέση: να είναι βοηθός του ανθρώπου στη σωτηρία του. Η φύση ανήκει στον Θεό και την έδωσε στον άνθρωπο για να είναι ο χώρος κατοικίας του, που σημαίνει ότι η φύση προσέβλεπε στον άνθρωπο ως τον βασιλιά της. Ξέπεσε στην αμαρτία ο άνθρωπος λοιπόν, ξέπεσε και η φύση. Και με την αποκατάσταση του ανθρώπου εν Χριστώ, αποκαθίσταται και αυτή. «Η προσμονή της φύσεως, μας λέει ο απόστολος Παύλος, είναι να σωθεί ο άνθρωπος, ώστε με τη σωτηρία αυτού να σωθεί και εκείνη». Έτσι η Μεταμόρφωση είναι μία ισχυρή απάντηση σ όλους εκείνους που ήθελαν και θέλουν να βλέπουν τον χριστιανισμό ως μία πνευματοκρατία ή ως ένα ιδεαλισμό, με υποτίμηση και άρνηση της φύσεως. 6. Φάνηκαν όμως ο Μωϋσής και ο Ηλίας στο όρος Θαβώρ, πρόσωπα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, που έζησαν αιώνες πολλούς προ Χριστού. Τι σημαίνει τούτο; Πρώτον, ότι ο Κύριος είναι Κύριος της ζωής και του θανάτου. Το γεγονός ότι οι μαθητές βλέπουν αυτούς τους αγίους, κεκοιμημένους ή απόντες από τον κόσμο αυτό από τόσο παλιά, είναι μία ισχυρότατη απόδειξη ότι αυτοί ζουν εν Θεώ. Ο θάνατος δεν είναι το τέλος της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. Ο άνθρωπος εναποθέτει το σώμα του, αλλά η ψυχή του, με τη χάρη του Θεού, συνεχίζει να ζει. Κι αυτό το σώμα, όπως η δυναμική της αναστάσεως του Κυρίου έφερε, θα αναστηθεί για να ενωθεί με την ψυχή και πάλι. Ο θάνατος λοιπόν με τον Χριστό έγινε μία απλή δίοδος, που μας οδηγεί μέσα στην αγκαλιά του Χριστού, πολύ πιο έντονα και άμεσα όμως: «πρόσωπον προς πρόσωπον». Μία προεικόνιση αυτού του γεγονότος είναι και η παρουσία των προφητών αυτών στο Θαβώρ. Κι από την άλλη: ο Κύριος φανερώνεται ότι αποτελεί το κέντρο και της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Η Παλαιά Διαθήκη, που συγκεφαλαιώνεται στον Νόμο και τους Προφήτες τον Μωϋσή και τον Ηλία συνιστά την πρώτη αποκάλυψη του Χριστού, με αποκορύφωση τον ερχομό Του στην Καινή. Παλαιά και Καινή αποτελούν ένα ενιαίο γεγονός, που δεν μπορεί κανείς να ξεχωρίσει, χωρίς να διαστρεβλώσει και τα δύο. Η Μεταμόρφωση λοιπόν δίνει απάντηση και στο θέμα αυτό. Η Παλαιά Διαθήκη έχει χριστοκεντρικό χαρακτήρα. Ο Κύριος συνιστά το νόημα και εκείνης. 17

18 Η θεολογία της Μεταμορφώσεως του Κυρίου είπαμε από την αρχή ότι συγκεφαλαιώνει όλη την πνευματική ζωή της Εκκλησίας. Αποκαλύπτει εκτός από τον Χριστό και τον άνθρωπο στην προοπτική του. Αλλά προϋποθέτει αυτό που προϋποθέτουν όλα τα πνευματικά γεγονότα στην Εκκλησία: την ετοιμότητα του ανθρώπου αποδοχής του πλούτου που περιέχει. Ποτέ δηλαδή κανένα πνευματικό γεγονός δεν προσφέρεται στον άνθρωπο, χωρίς αυτός να μπορεί πνευματικά να το αντέξει. Όπως ένα πλουσιότατο γεύμα δεν μπορεί να προσφερθεί σε ένα βρέφος, κατά τον ίδιο τρόπο ο πλούτος της χάριτος του Θεού, που τονίζεται στη Μεταμόρφωση απαιτεί τον «ενηλικιωμένο» χριστιανό. Γι αυτό και η Εκκλησία μας «τρέμει» μπροστά σε φαινόμενα νεανικού ενθουσιασμού, δηλαδή όταν νεαροί που ακούνε για «άκτιστον φως», νομίζουν ότι μπορούν χωρίς κόπο, εύκολα, να το αποκτήσουν. Και δυστυχώς τα αποτελέσματα είναι τραγικά. Τα λεγόμενα «νεανικά ναυάγια» δεν είναι μόνο σε θέματα ηθικής, αλλά δυστυχώς και σε θέματα πνευματικά. Κι εκείνο που πολύ καθαρά μας δίνει τις προϋποθέσεις βιώσεως της χορηγίας χάρης της Μεταμορφώσεως είναι ο ύμνος που λέει: «καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀστράψωμεν, ταῖς θείαις ἀλλοιώσεσιν, αὐτὴν κατασπαζόμενοι (την θείαν Μεταμόρφωσιν). Ὄρος ὑψηλότατον τὴν καρδίαν, κεκαθαρμένην ἐκ παθῶν, ἔχοντες ὀψόμεθα, Χριστοῦ τὴν Μεταμόρφωσιν, φωτίζουσαν τὸν νοῦν ἡμῶν». Δηλαδή: Ας αστράψουμε κι εμείς από τις θείες αλλοιώσεις (της Μεταμορφώσεως), καταφιλώντας την (μέσα στην αγκαλιά μας). Έχοντας την καρδιά μας ως υψηλότατο όρος, καθαρισμένη από τα πάθη, θα δούμε τη Μεταμόρφωση του Χριστού να φωτίζει τον νου μας. Η κάθαρση της καρδιάς μας, δια της μετανοίας και της τηρήσεως των εντολών του Χριστού, είναι η προϋπόθεση για να δούμε κι εμείς το φως του Χριστού να λάμπει μέσα μας. Γένοιτο. π. Γεωργίου Δορμπαράκη Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Our Lord had spoken to His disciples many times not only concerning His Passion, Cross, and Death, but also concerning the coming persecutions and afflictions that they themselves would endure. Since all these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance, evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is prepared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, fulfilling that which He had promised shortly before, that "there be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His Kingdom" (Matt. 16:28), He took His three foremost disciples and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion which was about to take place. Standing before Him as reverent servants, they showed that He is the Lord of both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from Hades, having died many centuries before, and Elias, as it were from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased; hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5). Such are the marvels, truly worthy of God, celebrated in this present feast, which is an image and prefiguring of the future state of the righteous, whose splendor the Lord spoke of, saying: "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun" (Matt. 13:43). It is because of this that the Kontakion of this Feast is said daily (when there is not a great feast) in the Service of the Typica in perpetual commemoration of the glory that will be the lot of the Saints. According to tradition, the Lord's Transfiguration came to pass forty days before His Crucifixion; this is why the Transfiguration is celebrated forty days before the Exaltation of the Cross. 18

20 We celebrate the Dormition of the Mother of God after this fasting period. By tradition, a Paraklesis (Small Service of Supplication to the Theotokos), sometimes called the Office of Consolation to the Most Holy Theotokos is sung daily during the Dormition Fast, August It is a service of supplication for the welfare of the living. It is addressed to the Most Holy Theotokos whose intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms, hymns, and litanies. The general guidelines for the Dormition Fast are as follows: WEEKDAYS are Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish, and wine (and oil). SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS and Transfiguration: fish and wine permitted (and oil). We still abstain from meat, dairy 1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. 2. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 3. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father.
