3 The Voice of the Greek Community JAN/FEB Remarks From Father Michael by Father Michael Varvarelis Dean of the Cathedral Dear beloved parishioners, A question is often asked: How often should I receive Holy Communion? I will try to respond by engaging in the Holy Scripture and the Church s Holy Fathers Who are the flawless guides to these critical issues for our salvation. Especially now when we are entering into Great Lent, perhaps this question is timely because we want to commune on Sundays and at the Presanctified Divine Liturgies on Wednesdays and Fridays where Holy Communion is offered, namely the Holy Body and Precious Blood of the Lord himself Christ to dwell in us. Since Christ is the Life, when we commune we have life. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life (John. 3:16 & 6:54). Indeed every man with Holy Communion shares the same body and the same blood with the only-begotten Son of God. Man is sanctified by receiving the Eucharist, Christ Himself. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him (John. 6:56). It is therefore necessary to commune, but this is a gift from God and we find in this Gift the fulfillment of the purpose of our life. We must be careful when we come to commune since we should carefully be prepared. Apostle Paul says: Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord s body (I Cor. 11:28). We realize that the Holy Table that is filled with life can become a judgment, a conviction, when we do not prepare ourselves properly. St. Cyril of Alexandria helps us prepare by telling us to seek to conform your life to the law of God. And Saint John Chrysostom advises us to have honesty and purity of soul and only then we should approach for communion, and without this purity we should never come to receive. He asks, How are you approaching the King of heaven with a soul that stinks? This thing is an insult. Moreover, St. John Chrysostom makes an observation that is timely. Many of the faithful have reached to such a point of foolishness and contempt of the holy Sacraments, that while they are full of innumerable evils... they are approaching the Holy Altar unprepared, not knowing that the time for Holy Communion is not to celebrate and feast, but to have a clean conscience and blameless life. Furthermore, St. Paul reveals a reality that we may not how often to commune, we can make the conclusion that when we adhere to the respected rules and conditions referenced in the Bible and the Holy Fathers of the Church then we may come to receive Holy Communion as often or sparingly as it spiritually benefits us. know. He says that he who receives Holy Communion unprepared eats and drinks not discerning the Lord s body, concluding: For this reason many are weak and sick among you and many sleep (die) (I Cor. 11:29-30). As we participate at the Lord s Table with no real repentance, this is the reason that many Christians get sick and many die. Receiving Holy Communion should be determined by purity of the heart, a clear conscience, and a real repentance. Shortly before Holy Communion the Priest raises the holy Body of Christ and says: the Holy Gifts are for the holy people of God. That Holy is the Body and Blood of Christ that is given only to the saints. Saints mean those who have reached the perfection of virtue. It also includes those who are still with the imperfection but they are advancing and want to reach to it. St. John Chrysostom says that with this statement, the Priest examines and addresses all the faithful so that no one will approach unprepared. So these words function as a barrier. You cannot say I did not know, I ignored that there is danger. The Priest with a loud voice, with a horrible cry, lifting up his hand like a preacher, standing tall, he is visible by all and with a loud cry in that absolute silence of the moment, he is inviting others to Holy Communion while he prevents others. The deliverance of sins is not the only factor to form a saint, but also the presence of the Holy Spirit. I beseech and implore you, says St. John Chrysostom Continued on page Και ερωτά «πώς τον Βασιλέα του ουρανού καταφιλείς με ψυχή η οποία βρωμά; All the latest news and photos are now on the web Visit today!

4 4 JAN/FEB 2015 The Voice of the Greek Community The President s Message by John Tsumas Parish Council President Dear Holy Trinity, What an exciting time to be part of our community at Holy Trinity! It is great to see all the growth that is taking place. Our Cathedral is consistently full, our youth activities are experiencing high levels of participation, our various ministries and committees are engaging many of our parishioners and the general sense feels like Holy Trinity is moving in a positive direction. It is with all mentioned above, that makes our decision to move forward on the Cathedral & Courtyard Renovation even that much more exciting. As most of you already know, at the Renovation Special Assembly our community gave us unanimous approval to move forward on the Renovation project! This culminates many years of hard work by the IRRC Committee, the Technical Committee, the Finance Committee, the Parish Council and many more parts of our community. I personally can t wait to see the first construction truck pull up sometime after the Yiasou Festival this fall. As we move along, many things will be communicated to our community in regards to the project, so please keep a lookout. But I wanted to take the rest of my time to discuss the need for our community s financial support to make the project a success. Since we are a Church, and a family, the financial responsibility falls on each of us. Our forefathers had the vision to create what we have today and did so with active financial support from the community. When you look at what our predecessors built and paid for, it is impressive. The construction of our Cathedral, Father C Hall and the Office/Education Building required the equivalent of over $12 million in today s dollars. We all continue to benefit from their vision and are obligated to protect and improve what we are blessed with. Our property is at the age where many things will require attention so that we can ensure its success for our children and the next generation. When considering how much you can contribute towards the project, please keep in mind the level of importance. There will only be a few times in each of our lives where our Church will need to ask us to make a significant financial contribution. This, my friends, is one of those few times. Our plan is to finance this in a way that leaves us with no debt over a 5-year period. To accomplish this with parishioner donations, we would need an average of $3,560 per family. We have approximately 650 active families. Out of those 650, 113 have already donated an average of $4,222. Now is the time we need the other 500+ families to make their contribution. Everyone will be receiving financial information in the near future, so please begin considering what you will do. Your donations can be made over a variety of ways, from a single payment to spreading it out over the 5 years. Let s look at a breakdown of a $3,560 donation spread out over the longest term of 5 years. This would amount to $59 per month, which is less than your average cable bill. I think most of us find the money for our cable bill, so it should be assumed we could find the money for our spiritual home. I encourage each of you to take time and prayerfully consider your family s commitment. Thank you again for your support for our Cathedral and its Renovation Project. Yours in Christ, John Tsumas Service: As believers we like to fulfill our commitment to serve others within and outside our Community. We do this by sharing our time, talent and treasures for the ministry and the glory of the Lord. Christian Maturity: In Ephesians chapter four, Saint Paul says we are to be a measure of the stature of Christ; that we should no longer be chidren, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head: Christ. Living the Orthodox Life: Putting Christ first in our lives through prayer, worship and partaking in the Sacraments thus building and growing spiritually, His Kingdom on earth. 5 The Voice of the Greek Community JAN/FEB Continued from page 3 Continued from page 3 do not approach this holy Altar unclean, nor with a guilty conscience. No one who remains a sinner may approach. Christ is present Who examines the motivation of each, observes who is approaching with appropriate piety to the holy Sacrament and who with a guilty conscience, with filthy and impure thoughts, with contaminated acts. St. Symeon the New Theologian underlines that a prerequisite for our participation in the Eucharist is the constant repentance expressed by the continuous mourning for the sins committed. Whoever does not do this spiritual work is not worthy to come to Holy Communion. Saint Eythimius the Great had received a gift from God and as the brothers received the Blessed Sacrament, he saw some illuminated by the Eucharist and others judged... So He was saying to his brothers: Brothers and fathers, everyone must thoroughly examine himself and then he should eat of the bread and drink of the cup, Apostle Paul says: For he who unworthily approaches the divine mystery andunworthily communes, eats and drinks judgment to himself. Therefore the priest who offers the bloodless sacrifice, before he starts the Holy Anaphora, he instructs everyone and asks insistently saying: Lift up your hearts. And when the people promise to implement his order, then he takes courage to offer to God the Holy Anaphora. And when the Anaphora is offered, again he raises his hands and with aloud voice says: the holy things for the holy people of God. By his word is like he says: I am human and I bring the same weaknesses as you and I do not know what you or anyone has done or thought, that is why I say to you and ask you before the Lord: Whoever has polluted himself from gluttony or has succumbed to shameful thoughts, or darkened by hatred and grudge or has fogged his mind from envy andanger, or is defeated by pride and arrogance, let him not dare to come to this divine and immaculate fire. Let him first be washed well with the sacrament of repentance and confession, and let him cleanse himself from all carnal and spiritual defilement, striving towards sanctification, and then to come. Because the holy Mysteries are not for the impious but the saints. Those who examine themselves with care, findtheir conscience clean, come to Him and be illumined and radiant and your faces are not ashamed. (I Cor. 11:28, Psalm 34:5) Saint John Chrysostom urges: If you are ever going to receive Holy Communion, please clean yourself thoroughly many days before with repentance, prayer, almsgiving and the preoccupation of spiritual matters. Saint Gregory Palamas says: How can one accept within himself the Body and Blood of Christ, if he is not cleansed first with appropriate confession and repentance... How can we receive God in us and become united with Him, without first deleting our sins by confession and without cleansing first the pollution created by these sins in the soul, with charity and chastity and abstinence, prayer and contrition and the other works of penance? For that reason let us be cleansed, brethren, in the body, mouth and mind, and let us come to commune with a virtuous and pure consciousness. As I finalize my comments on the question of how often to commune, we can make the conclusion that when we adhere to the respected rules and conditions referenced in the Bible and the Holy Fathers of the Church, and with the blessing and guidance of our spiritual father who hears our confession, then we may come to receive Holy Communion as often or sparingly as it spiritually benefits us. All the latest news and photos are now on the web Visit today!

8 8 JAN/FEB 2015 The Voice of the Greek Community Hellenic Dance Festival/Folk Dance Festival By Charlie Kleto THRYLOS Hellenic Dance Festival and Folk Dance Festival The Thrylos adult dance group, from Holy Trinity, began making a name for themselves at their very first competition, the 2013 Hellenic Dance Festival, hosted in Winston Salem, where they won the top award known as the Diamond. Thrylos continued to bring home the top prize during the next two consecutive years, securing their third Diamond award at this past year s Hellenic Dance Festival (HDF) in Charlotte.Over the years the group has worked very hard to learn and perform authentic dances. They have accomplished this through firsthand research by their director, Sarantos Kaperonis. This past year, at the 15 th annual HDF in Charlotte, Thrylos presented two suites from Evros, Thrace (Northern Greece). They had the pleasure of bringing a Thracian Lyra player, from Evros, to play during their two shows. With the material researched and performances presented to the judges, Thrylos won the Diamond award for the third year in a row.while prepping for HDF 2015, Thrylos was also hard at work preparing to compete, for the first time, at the Folk Dance Festival (FDF) 2015 in Anaheim, California. The Metropolis of San Francisco s Folk Dance Festival has been around for the past 39 years, and is double to triple the size of our Metropolis competition. Enthusiasts from both near and far attend FDF to watch some of the best dance groups in the country. In addition to musicians from across the United States, some groups bring the most well-known folk musicians from Greece to play for their suites.fdf hosts competitors from across the West coast, ranging from Arizona all the way up to Washington State. There were over 3,000 participants and 90 groups from 40 parishes that attended this year s FDF.Thrylos, representing our Holy Trinity parish from Charlotte, was the only dance group to compete from the East coast. Thrylos went to FDF with the intentions of presenting two authentic suites and ethima (customs) from the village of Pentalofos in Evros, Thrace. To accompany them, they brought the band Methorios from Greece. Methorios consists of the same Lyra player used at HDF, a Daouli player from Drama, a Kaval Player from Thessaloniki, and lastly a Gaida player from the village of Pentalofos. The thought of winning was far from most of the dancers minds, but to their surprise they were awarded the highest honor at FDF, known as the Sweepstakes award.thrylos is one out of four groups in the past 18 years to win Sweepstakes, with one of those groups winning it 14 out of the 18 years. Holy Trinity s adult group competed against that group and many other experienced groups, and were able to bring a win back home to Charlotte. Thrylos is one of the only active portions of the YAL here at Holy Trinity and is extremely thankful for the support and help received from the community during their many fundraisers. In coordination with the GOYA dancers of Holy Trinity, Thrylos will be hosting a Paschaliatiko Glendi/ Dance fundraiser, with LIVE MUSIC, on Saturday April 25 th at 8:00 pm in the Fr. C. Hall. Thrylos has already begun planning for HDF and FDF in 2016 and hopes to continue to represent their community through the preservation of our culture s paradosi. C Hall.

From the choir loft that morning emanated a rare and exceptional sound consisting of the combination of all the HTC Adult Choirs First Service, Second Service and the St. Romanos Baritone Choir. Under the choral direction of First Service Conductor, Toni Karnazis, the rich sound made it an uplifting and inspirational experience. Thank you all and to Toni for a job well-done! If any of your 2015 resolutions include devoting more time to any of the ministries of our Church, consider the music ministry and join the Choir! Choir practices for the First Service Choir are Monday evenings at 7pm and for the Second Service Choir are Thursday evenings at 7pm. Allocate and dedicate your time to Him who protects us! Holy is He! Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and sing joyful songs of praise. Psalm 95: 2 Preschool By Preschool Staff Whooo s in the News at the Preschool? Happy New Year and many blessings in 2015! We hope that everyone enjoyed their Christmas holiday as we celebrated the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. It was great to have all of our children back at the preschool after the holiday break. January and February have been busy months at the preschool. We started the month with our annual Doughnuts for Dads on January 13th and 14th. All of the Dads and Pappous were invited to come and have doughnuts and coffee with their children and grandchildren. Our World s Finest Chocolate Candy bar fund raiser is winding down and has been a huge success. Thank you to all of our preschool families and our Holy Trinity parishioners for supporting the preschool. In February, we kicked off the month with the opening of registration for the school year. Registration was off to a great start and the available spaces were quickly filling up. Each of the classes enjoyed their individual Valentine s Day parties, eating sweets and exchanging cards. On February 16th, preschool was closed for a teacher workday. We wrapped up the month with the start of the Parent/Teacher conferences for our two s, three s and four year old classes. For those of you who are not familiar with Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Preschool, we are a half-day program open from 9:15 am to 1:15 pm. We have classes available for children ages 18 months old to 4/5 year olds. Since we are a Greek Orthodox preschool, your child will have the unique opportunity to be exposed to the Orthodox faith and the Greek language. Preschool registration is on-going for the school year as long as there are spaces available. In order to guarantee a spot for your child, you will need to complete and return the registration forms along with the non-refundable $ registration fee. Annual Cruise: In January, approximately 15 couples from our Holy Trinity community went on a 10-day cruise together to the Central Caribbean Sea. Their trip included the islands of St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Barbados, Dominican and St. Maarten. Everyone had a great time and they are Feeding the Less Fortunate: On early Sunday morning, February 22nd, our 4th grade boys basketball team, along with their coach and parents, took part in a humbling service project. Many of the parents arrived at Church at 5:00am and helped prepare a hot breakfast that included sausage biscuits, pancakes, grits and much, much more, led by Coach Vaki Karampourniotis. The boys came to Church at 7:00am and everyone left together and drove to First United Methodist Church in uptown Charlotte. The boys were briefed on their serving duties and the doors opened at 8:00am. They passed out ham sandwiches that they made themselves and helped serve hundreds of homeless and less fortunate. Their beautiful smiles certainly made a difference in the peoples lives beyond just the nourishment they provided. This is a service project that they will be doing again in the near future. What a great experience this was for our children to truly understand what it is to give back to our community. Your News is what makes Around Charlottetown happen. 16 16 JAN/FEB 2015 The Voice of the Greek Community Hellenic Dance Festival By Stacie Peroulas HOLY TRINITY HOSTS 15TH ANNUAL HELLENIC DANCE FESTIVAL Holy Trinity s dance program had unprecedented success and placed in every competitive category. Two Holy Trinity teams, Fourtouna and Thrylos, received the coveted Diamond Awards, the highest divisional Holy Trinity Cathedral was honored to host the 2015 Hellenic Dance Festival (HDF) on January Over 1000 participants from the Atlanta Metropolis and beyond filled the Sheraton Hotel Uptown with Greek folk dance, song and fellowship. Competition groups traveled from North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Chicago. (highest honor in Division 2), Costume Award HDF Charlotte was truly a community effort, with participation coming from all generations. From the mothers and grandmothers who lovingly and Dynasteia honors in the festival. Below is a complete list of Holy Trinity s awards. Dynasteia 1st place in Primary Category, Folk Expression Award Levendia 3rd place in Junior Category Thrylos meticulously sewed costumes, to the dedicated dancers and instructors, to the parents and other parish members who volunteered on site throughout the weekend as greeters, drivers and registration helpers, the Holy Trinity Dance Board is very grateful. Special thanks Thorivos Holy Trinity had most recently hosted HDF in Seventeen teams and just over 400 participants visited Charlotte that year, and all events were held on church grounds. This year, over 30 teams competed in six divisions from Primary (ages 9 and under) to Adult (over 18). Musicians from across the U.S. and Greece attended to accompany many groups. The sounds of lyra, violin, gaida, daouli and more filled the two competition ballrooms and enhanced the energy and authenticity of the event. In addition to full days of competition on Saturday and Sunday, participants enjoyed a Friday night opening ceremony, during which Metropolitan Alexios offered an Agiasmos and the comedian Basile entertained the Levendia crowd. Saturday evening s dinner and glendi were the only off-site events and were held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, just a few blocks from the Sheraton. Guests had full run of the museum and had the opportunity to experience Charlotte s motorsports history. The weekend culminated with an Oscar-themed Awards Ceremony, complete with a red carpet, that highlighted the roots of Charlotte s community: Arahova and Karpenisi. The HDF torch was then symbolically passed to the city of Orlando, Florida, which will host the 2016 Hellenic Dance Festival in January. The festivities continued well into Monday morning with another glendi and live music and dancing in the Sheraton lobby. Fourtouna Fourtouna Diamond Award (highest donor in Division 1), Costume Award Kataigida 3rd place in Senior Category, Costume Award Thorivos 3rd place in Advanced Senior Category Thrylos Diamond Award All the latest news and photos are now on the web Visit today! Kataigida are due to Father Michael, John Georgopoulos and the parish council for their support and enthusiasm for the program. Holy Trinity looks forward to another successful year and plans to send six competition groups to HDF 2016.
