Praying for the Dead By Phyllis Meshel Onest Why Pray for the Dead? Prayer for the dead is an important part of the life as Orthodox Christians. When we remember our deceased family members and friends in prayer, we act on our belief in God's promise of resurrection and eternal life for them and for us. In James 5:16 we read: "Pray for one another...the prayer of a righteous man has great power." Is this prayer only for the living? Given that death does not disrupt the unity of Christ's body, that is, those of us still struggling in this world and those who have already received their reward in the next, the answer is "No." Do we not believe that during the Divine Liturgy the entire Body of Christ participates? Orthodox Christians who are dead can be remembered during the preparation of the Gifts for the Divine Liturgy. As the priest reads their names he places small particles of the bread on the paten below the large square that represents our Lord. Confer with your parish priest regarding how to remember non-orthodox Christians. There is a wide variance on how this is done among the different Orthodox traditions. The prayer of the righteous can help to obtain forgiveness for a sinner, even if he is already dead. By praying for the dead we hope that God will be merciful and grant them pardon of their sins. In II Maccabees 12:44-45 we read about a sin offering made by Judas Maccabeus on behalf of his dead soldiers: "For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore, he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. " Praying for the dead instructs us, the living, reminding us of our own mortality and need to prepare for our own passage from this life to the next. It reminds us of our connection with our deceased family members. In addition, those fallen asleep in the Lord continue to pray for us. We pray for one another! It can be very comforting for our children to remember their beloved grandparents in prayer, and to know that their grandparents continue to pray for them. When my mother-in-law was still living, and our daughters visited her, they knew that Baba Mary would pray on her knees twice a day, for an hour each time. She had her "list" of people to pray for tucked into her worn prayer book that was held together with duct tape. It was an image that the girls will always remember. How Do We Do This? One way is to include the names of the dead on our list of prayer intentions, either in our icon corner or prayer book. This way we can remember them by name often. Another way is to offer Memorial Services in the Church. These are traditionally done on the third, ninth, and fortieth days after their repose, then on the year's anniversary. Some people keep the year's anniversary annually; others on the five-year multiples. According to St. Simeon of Thessalonica, "the Third Day service is celebrated for the reason that the reposed one received his being through the Trinity." It also reminds us that Jesus was resurrected on the third day. Often, the burial takes place on the third day. The Ninth Day says St. Simeon, is kept in remembrance of the nine choirs of angels: "...that the spirits of the deceased dwell together with the holy spirits, the angels, being unmaterial (sic) and naturally similar to them." The Fortieth Day service dates back to the Old Testament. Joseph mourned his father Jacob for forty days, as did the Israelites for Moses. Jesus remained on earth for forty days after His resurrection before ascending to heaven. The Year Anniversary, according to St. Simeon, "is celebrated because it is the consummation, and our God, the Trinity, is the life of all and the cause of being and shall be the restoration of all the renewal of human nature." On these occasions we contact the priest to serve the Memorial Service which can also become a special family gathering. If the family member is buried nearby, the priest can be asked to conduct the Memorial Service at the cemetery. Although Saturday is the day traditionally set apart for prayers for the dead, some Orthodox Churches offer the Memorial Service at the end of Liturgy on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the person's death. Even though this may be considered a "matter of convenience, "it does afford the entire parish, including the children, the opportunity to participate and be reminded of this responsibility. Among those churches that maintain Sunday as strictly the day of the Lord's Resurrection, memorials are held either on Saturday or a weekday. Continued next page...

Continued... When can we pray for the dead? The Church sets aside certain days as "Saturday of the Souls." In the Greek tradition: the two Saturdays before and the first Saturday of the Great Fast. In the Slav tradition: the Saturday of Meatfare, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturdays of the Great Fast, and the Saturday before St. Demetrios (October 26/November 8). In both traditions: the Saturday before Pentecost. The Slavic tradition also includes prayers for the dead on the Tuesday after St. Thomas Sunday, and for those fallen in battle, on the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (August 29/September 11). On the first Saturday of the Great Fast we remember the miracle of St. Theodore of Tyre in 362AD with koliva. The Emperor, Julian the Apostate, had the food in the market sprinkled with the blood of animals sacrificed to pagan gods in order to defile the first week of the Great Fast. Patriarch Aphdoxios of Constantinople appeared to the saint in a dream warning him of the emperor's scheme. St. Theodore told the people to cook the wheat they had at home rather than grinding all of it into flour. Thus, they did not buy anything in the market and avoided the tainted food. There are certain days when Memorial Services are not permitted. They include Feast Days, between Christmas and Theophany, and between Palm Sunday and St. Thomas Sunday (the Sunday after Pascha/ Easter.) In many places it is the custom to visit the cemetery during Bright Week to place flowers, newly dyed Pascha eggs, and burning candles by the graves. If it is a parish cemetery, as is the case in my parish, the priest and the faithful, adults and children, visit on St. Thomas Sunday to pray and to sing "Christ is Risen!" to all those departed this life. Food at Memorial Services Among some Orthodox Christians, koliva (kolyva) or boiled wheat is prepared for the Memorial Service. Among others the custom is to prepare a sweetened bread or cake, or sweetened rice. The important idea in most cases seems to be that the memorial food is some sort of grain, sweetened, and distributed to all in attendance. The grain recalls Jesus' reference to His own death and resurrection: "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit." John 12:24 In some parishes there are people who regularly make the required food for these services, so check with your parish priest. If you plan to make it yourself, include your children. It provides them the opportunity to learn how it's done, plus gives you an occasion to reflect on its spiritual meaning. If a parishioner is employed to make the food item, ask if you can bring your children to watch. Koliva appears in a variety of forms, from a bowl of glutinous, purposely overboiled, unsweetened, unidentifiable grain, to a fantasy of royal icing, paper lace, and dragee. The only constant is that the grain is boiled for a bowl of traditional Greek style koliva that would be offered at the Liturgy on a Saturday of the Souls.

A Message from the President October 2018 Parishioners, Thanks to you all, we are off to good start for the 2018-19 Ecclesiastical Year. Our youth participation is up, and other ministries continue to expand. Specifically, our GOYA is as strong as it has been in years with active participation in the Basketball League (with two boys teams and a girls' team), the Kick-off Retreat weekend, and having already commenced our dance practices (the kids will be performing at Media's Festival) and Sights and Sounds preparations. We are now exploring initiating a Delaware Valley Basketball League for our little ones (ages 6-12) and initiated discussions with other local parishes. Recently, the Parish Council has begun an initiative of outreach and program development for our College (OCF) Ministries and, formation of programs for our 21-35 year old adults, married and single, in order to foster greater participation in our parish and fellowship, generally. We will present a slate of proposed programs at the General Assembly on November 4th. I have also encouraged the Delaware Valley Youth Commission to become more active in developing programs for these age groups and fostering more coordination between the parishes with respect to these programs once they have been implemented. Our classrooms will be equipped with a computer laboratory in the next month that will be available for Religious Education as well as Greek School lessons. Recently, Kosta Fountzoulas and I have discussed beginning a Greek language class for adults and hope to have this program in place for the new year. Finally, the Parish Council has reached out to the (already established and successful) Young at Heart group to see what can be done to better assist its programs and realize even more success. Philoptochos Sisterhood of Holy Trinity St. Agape Chapter Dear Beloved Parishioners and Philoptochos Members, The Ecclesiastical year is off to a great start! We started our year with the Annual Welcome Back Ministry sign-up Picnic. All who came had a wonderful time of food and fellowship. If you were unable to be there and would still like to join the Philoptochos, we are always accepting all Orthodox women, ages 18 and over, to come and be a part of this long standing ministry! On Sunday, September 23rd, we celebrated our Chapter s Name day by offering an Artoclasia for the health and well being of our members and we hosted a luncheon for the coffee hour. On September 25th we had our Welcome Back Dinner Meeting and made plans for the coming year. More information will follow when upcoming events draw near. A History of the Wilmington Greek Community In the early years, community dances attracted just about all community members. Some early AHEPA dance program books noted the musical selection for dances in the 1920s. Fox Trots, Waltzes, etc. Not a single Greek song! That s because the community wanted to assimilate, not to mention that there were no Greek orchestras. AHEPA dances were held in the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel dupont. This month s photo is from March, 1935 and was a community dance. It was probably taken at the Eden Hall Building on 10 th Street. The Parish Council is seated in the foreground. You ll note in the background, to the left, is the bottom of the AHEPA banner which is still displayed in the AHEPA Room. To the right of center, there is the bottom of another banner. Can anyone make it out? You ll also note the members of the band in the back against the wall from their instruments. BOINES SCHOLARSHIP 2018-19 Holy Trinity is grateful for the extraordinary contributions of the late Mr. James and Mrs Ethel Boines and is proud to present the Boines Scholarship for graduating high school seniors of Holy Trinity in addition provisions for students attending Hellenic College and/or pursuing the priesthood. Please review the following criteria and any questions should be directed to the Church Office. Boines Scholarship PROGRAM I Types of Scholarships There are three types of scholarships available to be distributed from the Boines Fund: (1) Boines College Scholarships, (2) Boines St. John Oratorical Festival College Scholarships, and (3) Boines Hellenic College/Holy Cross Scholarships. These scholarships shall be for the first year of college, except as otherwise stated. II Who Is Entitled A. A graduating high school student may apply for any of the above three scholarship programs if he or she has fulfilled the following three requirements during the past school year: (1) Eighty percent (80%) Sunday School attendance, (2) participation in two of the following: (a) St. John Oratorical Festival, (b) Church Choir or Liturgical Choir Competition at Sights & Sounds, (c) altar service (for boys), and (3) sufficient active participation in GOYA as determined by the point award system in the GOYA Youth Directory (as it may be amended). B. Attendance in Sunday School is defined as follows: 1. Eighty-percent (80%) attendance for Sunday School throughout the church year; 2. An absence shall be excused if the student presents a note from a parent that the student was ill, or if the student presents a note from another Orthodox Sunday School teacher that the student attended Sunday School in another Orthodox Church. 3. Singing in the Church Choir and/or service as an altar boy during the Divine Liturgy is also an excused absence if the student arrives in choir or the altar service at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. C. Scholarships will be available only to the children of parishioners who have been stewards of the Holy Trinity Parish for three years, except that this three-year requirement shall not apply for the award of St. John Oratorical Festival scholarship awards.

Continued... BOINES SCHOLARSHIP 2018-19 III Amount of Scholarship Awards A. An amount equal to approximately 2.5% of the fund (determined as of April 30 each year) will be made available for scholarships. B. No one scholarship grant shall exceed $5,000.00 (for example, if there is only one eligible student) or be less than $3,000.00. The scholarship amounts may otherwise vary from year to year, depending on the number of eligible students, The Boines Scholarship Committee (see IV below) may request additional funds from the Parish Council, to be distributed from the Boines Fund, if it determines that the 2.5% distribution is not enough to accommodate at least $3,000.00 for each eligible student. C. Graduating high school students who have participated in the St. John Oratorical Festival are also entitled to the following additional scholarships awards, provided they have met the three requirements contained in the first paragraph of this section. $250.00 for all students who participate at the local level; $500.00 for students who succeed to the regional level; $750.00 for students who succeed to the Metropolis level; and $1,000.00 for students who succeed to the national level. D. Scholarship awards may be made available for the children of Holy Trinity parishioners who matriculate in Hellenic College/Holy Cross on the following basis. A first -year student entering Hellenic College will be entitled to a scholarship amount double the amount otherwise available to first year students entering other colleges. This Scholarship shall only be available for the student s first year attending Hellenic College. The son of parishioners who enter Holy Cross for the avowed purpose of preparing for and entering the priesthood will be entitled to a scholarship for the full eight-year Hellenic College/Holy Cross program (assuming funds are available) leading to the priesthood, provided that prior to the award of any such scholarship such student agrees to request ordination within three years following his graduation from the seminary. The intent of such an award to a student who enters Hellenic College/Holy Cross leading to the priesthood is to supplement, and not replace, other scholarship programs available at the Hellenic College/Holy Cross such as the Leadership 100 scholarship program. It is required that the student apply for all other scholarship grants available before an award is made hereunder. IV Boines Scholarship Committee A Boines Scholarship Committee will be elected by the parishioners during a duly convened Spring General Assembly to administer this program. The parish priest and the President of the Parish Council will serve as ex officio members of the Boines Scholarship Committee. V These rules may be amended, subject to a majority vote by a duly convened General Assembly of the Parish.

HOLY TRINITY REGISTRY Weddings: Andrew Vande Poele & Caroline Zarroli, were united in marriage on September 8. The Sponsor was Leah Vande Poele. We congratulate the newly united in Christ and pray our Lord will bless them always. Baptisms: Anastasia Charalambides, daughter of Dino & Nia Charalambides, was baptized in our Church on September 1. Her sponsor was Kristen Tripolitis. We congratulate her and her sponsor and welcome Anastasia into the Orthodox faith. Funerals: Milton Misogianes fell asleep in the Lord on September 22, 2018. His funeral was held at Holy Trinity on September 26. He is survived by his daughter Christine, her husband Jared Limbach, his son Bruce, grandsons Beau and James, and his partner Judi McGann. May his memory be eternal. Saint Gerasimos of Cephalonia / October 20 Reading: Saint Gerasimus was from the Peloponnesus, the son of Demetrius and Kale, of the family of Notaras. He was reared in piety by them and studied the Sacred writings. He left his country and went throughout various lands, and finally came to Cephalonia, where he restored a certain old church and built a convent around it, where it stands to this day at the place called Omala. He finished the course of his life there in asceticism in the year 1570. His sacred relics, which remain incorrupt, are kept there for the sanctification of the faithful. For he has rightly received from God the ever-flowing grace of performing healing. He strengthens those with diseases and he heals those with demons. Διάφορα 28η Οκτωβρίου 1940 Δρ. Κώστας Γ. Φούντζουλας 15 Αυγούστου τού 1940. Ενώ οί Έλληνες εόρτaζaν τήν ημέρα τής Κοιμήσεως τής Θεοτόκου ένα Ιταλικό υποβρύχιο εβύθισε τό αντιτορπιλλικό Έλλη στό λιμάνι τής νήσου Τήνου χωρίς καμμιά προειδοποίηση. Αυτό ήταν τό προεόρτιο τής επιθέσεως τής φασιστικής τότε Ιταλίας, συμμάχου τής ναζιστικής Γερμανίας, εναντίον τής Ελλάδος. Η υπόλοιπη Δυτική Ευρώπη, πλήν τής Σουηδίας καί Φιλανδίας, ουσιαστικών συμμάχων τής Γερμανίας, τής Μ. Βρεττανίας, τής Ισπανίας καί τής Ελβετίας, ευρίσκεται ήδη κάτω από τόν Γερμανικό ζυγό. Η Τουρκία εκράτησε ουδέτερη στάση μέχρι 10 ημέρες πρίν τό τέλος τού Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου οπότε επήγε μέ τούς συμμάχους. Στίς 3 τό πρωί τής 28ης Οκτώβριου τού 1940. ο πρεσβευτής τής Ιταλίας στήν Αθήνα έδωσε τελεσίγραφο τής κυβερνήσεώς του στόν πρωθυπουργό τής Ελλάδος Ιωάννη Μεταξά νά αφήση τά Ιταλικά στρατεύματα νά περάσουν από τήν Ελλάδα, μέ προορισμό τήν Μέση Ανατολή. Τά πετρέλαια τής Μέσης Ανατολής ήταν απαραίτητα γιά τήν Γερμανία καί τήν Ιταλία πού δέν διέθεταν πηγές ενεργείας. Ο πρωθυπουργός τής Ελλάδος απάντησε στό τελεσίγραφο μέ ένα ΟΧΙ. Ο δικτάτορας τής Ιταλίας Μουσολίνι είχε απειλήσει ότι θά καταλάβη τήν Ελλάδα στέλνοντας 8 εκατομύρια ξιφολόγχες, όσος καί ο πληθυσμός τής Ελλάδος. Στίς 5 τό πρωί τής 28ης Οκτώβριου, δύο μόλις ώρες μετά τό τελεσίγραφο, τά Ιταλικά στρατεύματα άρχισαν τήν επιθεσή τους κατά τής Ελλάδος στά Ελληνοαλβανικά σύνορα. Τά πρώτα ανακοινωθέντα τού ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού Αθηνών από τό μέτωπο έλεγαν απλά κάι λιτά ότι τά Ελληνικά στρατεύματα υπερασπίζονται τό πάτριο έδαφος. Ο Ελληνικός λαός σύσσωμος, μέ ενθουσιασμό αντάξιο τών προγόνων του ανταποκρίθηκε στό κάλεσμα στά όπλα. Μέ κάθε μέσον προωθήθηκαν οι στρατιώτες στά σύνορα. Οί Ελληνίδες γυναίκες, σάν άλλες Σπαρτιάτισες, κατευώδωναν τούς συζύγους, υίους καί αδελφούς τους, μέ τήν ευχή νά επιστρέψουν νικητές. Η Ιταλία διέθετε στρατιωτική υπεροπλία σέ όλους τούς τομείς. Η Ελλάδα σέ αντίθεση είχε μέν πολύ λιγότερο στρατό καί πολεμικά υλικά αλλά ένα λαό αποφασισμένο νά πεθάνη γιά τήν ελευθερία καί ανεξαρτησία του. Όταν ένας λαός έχει αποφασίσει νά πεθάνη γιά τήν ελευθερία του τότε κερδίζει. Οί Έλληνες κατώρθωσαν μέσα σέ λίγες μόνο ημέρες νά περάσουν στήν αντεπίθεση. Ονόματα πόλεων όπως Σαραντάπορο, Τεπελένι, Αργυρόκαστρο καί Άγιοι Σαράντα είναι συνυφασμένα μέ τό έπος τών Ελλήνων στόν Ελληνοιταλικό πόλεμο τού 1940. Τά βουνά τής Ηπείρου καί τής Βορείου Ηπείρου έγιναν ο τάφος τών Ιταλών. Ο ηρωϊσμός τών Ελλήνων ξεπέρασε κάθε όριο. Μέσα σέ έξη μήνες, παρ όλες τίς προσπάθειες τών Ιταλών καί τού ίδιου τού Μουσολίνι προσωπικά, οί Έλληνες είχαν απωθήσει τού Ιταλούς μέσα στήν Αλβανία. Παρ ολίγο νά τούς πετάξουν στήν Αδριατική θάλασσα. Η νίκη τών Ελλήνων ήταν η πρώτη συμμαχική νίκη τού Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Ο Winston Churchill, ο μετέπειτα ωνομασθής Πατέρας τής Νίκης, είχε ειπεί θαυμάζοντας τούς Ελλήνες γιά τίς νίκες τους ότι από τώρα καί εμπρός δέν θά λέμε ότι οί Έλληνες πολεμούν σάν ήρωες αλλά ότι οί ήρωες πολεμούν σάν Έλληνες. Στόν ηρωϊκό αυτόν αγώνα η συνεισφορά τών γυναικών ήταν μεγαλειώδης. Έστελναν δέματα μέ τρόφιμα καί ρούχα πού έπλεκαν οί ίδιες στούς Έλληνες στρατιώτες. Καί όχι μόνο αυτό. Οί ηρωϊκές Ηπειρώτισες, άξιες απόγονοι τών Σουλιωτισών, κουβαλούσανε στήν πλάτη τους, πάνω στά χιονισμένα βουνά τής Ηπείρου, μέσα στήν λασπη καί στό κρύο, πολεμοφόδια καί τρόφιμα στούς στρατιώτες πού πολεμούσαν στό μέτωπο. Η νίκη τών Ελλήνων κατά τών Ιταλών το 1940 καθυστέρησε τήν επίθεση τού Χίτλερ κατά τής Ρωσίας κατά έξη μήνες. Αποτέλεσμα αυτής τής καθυστερήσεως ήταν ότι οι Γερμανοί αντιμετώπησαν τούς Ρώσους μέσα στόν βαρύ Ρωσικό χειμώνα μέ καταστροφικά αποτελέσματα γιά αυτούς. Το κόστος όμως τού Ελληνοιταλικού πολέμου, τής Γερμανικής κατοχής καί τού εμφυλίου πολέμου πού ακολούθησαν ήταν δυσανάλογα βαρύ γιά τήν Ελλάδα. Μέσα σέ δέκα χρόνια υπήρξαν, σέ σύνολικό πληθυσμό οκτώ εκατομμυρίων, ένα εκατομμύριο νεκροί Έλληνες, πολύ ανάπηροι καί μιά χώρα τελείως κατεστραμμένη. Τό τίμημά πού επλήρωσε η Ελλάδα γιά τήν ελευθερία της ήταν πολύ βαρύ. Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη τών νεκρών αδελφών μας.

Various 28 th October, 1940 Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas 15 th August, 1940. While the Hellenes were observing the Dormition of Virgin Mary, an Italian submarine, without any warning sank the Greek torpedo destroyer Elli, which was docked in the harbor of the island of Tenos. This was the prelude of the attack against Greece of the fascistic Italy, ally of the nazi Germany. The rest of the Western Europe, except for Sweden and Finland, who were allies of Germans, and Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland, was under the German yoke. Turkey was and remained neutral until 10 days before the end of the Second World War at which time it joined the allied forces. At 3 o clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940, the ambassador of Italy in Athens gave an ultimatum to the prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, demanding permission for the Italian army to go through Greece on its way to Middle East. The Middle East oil was necessary for both Italy and Germany because they did not have sufficient energy resources. Greece s prime minister answer was NO ( OXI ). Italy s dictator Mussolini threatened to send 8 million bayonets, one for each Hellene, to occupy Hellas. Only two hours after the ultimatum to the prime minister, the Italian troops attacked Hellas: from its borders with Albania at 5 o clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940. The state radio of Athens announced in a laconic way that the Hellenic troops are defending the motherland. The Greek people, worthy of their glorious ancestors, responded enthusiastically to the mobilization to defend their country. They went to the front with all possible means. The Greek women, like the ancient Spartans mothers, were saying good-bye to their beloved husbands, sons and brothers and urging them to return home victorious. Italy was militarily superior to Greece. It had a much bigger army, superior air force and advanced weapons. In contrast, Greece s main weapon was the decisiveness of its people to die for their freedom and independence. The prerequisite for winning a war is people not to hesitate to die for their freedom. The Hellenes, in a few days after the sudden attack, counterattacked successfully. Names of towns like Sarantaporo, Tepeleni, Argyrokastro and Hagioi Saranta always remind us of the heroism and triumph of the Hellenes in the Greco-Italian war of 1940. The mountains of Epiros and of Northern Epiros became the grave for the attacking Italians. Within six months, despite the efforts of the Italians and Mussolini s personal efforts, the Hellenes had pushed the Italians well within Albania. They almost threw them in the Adriatic sea. The victory of Hellenes was the first victory of the allies of the Second World War. Winston Churchill, who afterwards was called the Father of The Victory, said in admiring the Hellenes for their victories, that from now on we will not say that the Hellenes fight like heroes but the heroes fight like the Hellenes. The contribution of the Greek women in the war was tremendous. They were sending packages with food and clothes which they had themselves knitted for the fighting soldiers. In addition, the heroic women of Epiros, worthy descendants of the women of Souli, walking in the mud of the snowed mountains of Epiros, were carrying ammunition and food for the soldiers on their shoulders. The victory of the Hellenes against the Italians delayed the Hitler s attack to Russia for six months. This delay forced the Germans to fight the Russians during the heavy Russian winter of 1942 with disastrous for them results. However, the cost of the Greco-Italian war, the German occupation that followed and the civil war were disproportionally heavy for Greece. From 1940-1950, out of 8 million Greeks there were one million dead, many wounded handicapped people, a completely destroyed country, and created seven hundred thousand refuges. The price Hellas paid for its independence was very heavy. Let their example inspire us to always raise our voice and our sword in defense of liberty and justice. Let the memory of the fallen brothers of ours stay with us eternally.

Ήταν όμορφο κι ελπιδοφόρο να βλέπης μαθήτριες και μαθητές, παληούς και νέους, να πλημμυρίζουν το σχολείο μας. Ήταν τόσο όμορφο να ακούμε πάλι τις φωνές τους μετά από την τρίμηνη καλοκαιριάτικη ησυχία. Εφέτος αποφασίσθηκε οι τάξεις ν αρχίσουν αμέσως μετά το ετήσιο πικνικ καλωσορίσματος της επιστροφής από τις καλοκαιρινές διακοπές για τους εξής λόγους: α) 2 ώρες μάθημα την εβδομάδα για 8 μόνο μήνες τον χρόνο είναι πολύ λίγες για την εκμάνθηση της γλώσσας, που περιλαμβάνει, γραμματική και ορθογραφία, ιστορία, και τον Ελληνικού πολιτισμό εν γένει. β) ο εορτασμός των δύο εθνικών μας εορτών, της 28 ης Οκρτωβρίου και 25 ης Μαρτίου, απαιτεί ιδιαίτερη προετοιμασία και χρόνο. γ) ΠΑΡΕΛΑΣΗ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΑΝΕΞΑΡΤΗΣΙΑΣ, ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΕΙΑ, ΠΕΝΝΣΥΛΒ. γ) Η προετοιμάσια της χοροεσπερίδας του σχολείου μας απαιτεί χρόνο από τους γονείς και διαδακτικό προσωπικό. Ο χορός μας είναι κατ αρχήν μέρος της απαραίτητης διαφημίσεως του σχολείου μας. Τα έσοδα του χορού μας είναι επίσης μία σημαντική πηγή ενισχύσεως του προυπολογισμού του σχολείου που χρησιμοποιείται γαι αγορά βιβλίων και μισθοδοσίας των διδακτικού προσωπικού, ώστε τα δίδακτρα να μην επιβαρύνουν πολύ τον οικογενειακό προϋλογισμό σας. δ) Εφέτος η πρόοδος των μαθητών και μαθητριών θα προσμετράται από την εργασία στο σπίτι, εξετάσεις και συμμετοχή στο μάθημα. Μία γλώσσα, οποιαδήποτε γλώσσα, ακόμη και η μητρική μας, χρειάζεται προσπάθεια και γνώση του γραπτού λόγου. Ο προφορικός λόγο από μόνος του δεν επαρκεί. ε) Μαθήματα χορού θα δίνωνται περιστασιακά και ειδικά πριν από μερικές εαπό τις εκδηλώσεεις μας στ) Εκδρομή στο τέλος του χρόνου! Με τη σύμφωνη γνώμη του προέδρου της κοινότητας, Γεωργίου Ρασσιά αποφασίσθηκε η δημιουργία «Εργαστηρίου Υπολογιστών» για όλους του μαθητές και μαθήτριες. Fountzoulas Our Hellenic School began on Wednesday, September 12, with the established Agiasmos (water Blessing). It was beautiful and hopeful to see again schoolchildren, old and new, running in the classrooms of our school. It was so beautiful to hear their voices again after the three-month summer silence. This year it was decided that the classes will begin immediately after the annual welcome back picnic of the community from the summer holidays, for the following reasons: a) 2 hour lessons per week for only 8 months a year are very few, as a matter of fact too few for the learning of the language, including grammar and spelling, history, and Greek culture in general. b) the celebration of our two national holidays on 28 October 1940 (OXI DAY) and 25 March 1821 (GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY) requires special preparation and time. c) GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE, PHILADELPHIA, PA! d) The preparation of our school dinner-dance requires the time of both, parents and staff. Our dinner-dance is mainly a necessary advertising tool of our school. Our dinner-dance income is also an important source of budget support for the school, and its used to purchase of books and pay for the salaries of the teachers, so the tuition fees do not strain too much your family budget. e) This year the progress of the pupils will be measured from the assigned homework, tests and attendance of the classes. A language, any language, even our mother tongue, needs effort and the necessary knowledge of writing and its rules. Speaking alone is not enough. f) Dance lessons will be given occasionally and especially before some of our significant events. f) End of the year trip! With the concurrence of the president of the community, George Rassias, it was decided to create a "Computer Lab" for all pupils. In this way our school enters the 21st century! September 12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room East We sincerely thank Paulette Alexandridis for sponsoring the meal on September 12th again this year in loving memory of her friend, Mary Manolakis. Mary generously supported and served this dining room in September for many, many years. Dimitra Pappoulis and Tina Ganiaris worked in the kitchen that day serving 145 men, women and children a warm luncheon meal. Dimitra Pappoulis will sponsor and serve the meal on Friday, October 12th. All are welcome to help serve that day and on the 12th of every month! We sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who generously give of their time and charity to this dining room and ministry! Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Food Pantry We at Holy Trinity, as Orthodox Christians, must always be alert and aware, to the needs of our less fortunate neighbors. Almost everyday, articles are appearing in our newspapers on the plight of the poor and working poor who, every month, need help in stretching their food dollar. The most effortless way to be involved in this Christian program of feeding the poor is by filling our bins with your food donations. The bin can be found by the Church Office. Always needed are non-perishable items such as: Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, cranberry sauce, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, etc. Any food item that will not spoil. While doing your food shopping, but extra items to share with the poor. We are always being reminded in the Bible to look after and care for the poor. One example is in Psalms 41:1-2: Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the Lord will help them when they are in trouble. The Lord will protect them and preserve their lives.

GOYA NEWS Hello all! With the arrival of this new GOYA season we have so many things planned, not to mention a sizable group of new members! After our first successful meeting, we found that a little over a dozen GOYAns were interested in attending the GOYA Kickoff Retreat on October 12th, 13th and 14th. We encourage all GOYAns to take part in this retreat as it is a great way to meet youth and make friends from other churches in a non competitive environment! In addition to that, we have decided on our first service project as well as a few fundraising ideas. For our first service project we will be volunteering our time at Faithful Friends in Elsmere, a no kill shelter with roots in our local community! We also plan to visit the Ronald McDonald House again this year as well as other service projects with new groups and charities. We are also beginning to prepare for the Saint Sophia Basketball Tournament in Washington DC on October 27th-28th! We have many eager members because as we have found, traveling to other churches for tournaments and dances is always enjoyed by all. Our meeting this month will be held October 7th in the large Sunday school classroom (Room 8), we look forward to seeing all of our members again! St Luke the Evangelist (October 18 - Feast Day) The awesome figure of St Luke looms larger and larger out of both the New Testament and the pages of documented human history so that nearly two thousand years after his death his image has no less been diminished by time than that of the Nazarene, Jesus Christ, whom he so nobly served. His fellow apostle St. Paul called him the glorious physician, but that was only one of the many talents which this magnificent man applied in a service to God. He was a man of such monumental proportion as to make him appear incredible. His many gifts were spiced with unswerving loyalty, prolific creativity, and matchless perfection. Hailing from the ancient city of Antioch, Syria, Luke was a Roman whose early conversion to Christianity is evidenced by his membership in the Christian Community of Antioch, prior to his emergence as an apostle, after meeting Paul. He had by that time developed a remarkable command of the Greek language and employed its idiomatic expressiveness in his beautiful narrative form of recording history. He became the Church s most articulate historian and wrote with such sensitivity and clarity that his Gospel in the New Testament has been called the most beautiful book ever written. Luke, a physician whose skills healed many of his suffering comrades, joined St. Paul on his second missionary journey, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Their odyssey began in Troas, about 50A.D., and took them to Philippi, Rome, Caesarea, and ultimately to the Holy Land of Jerusalem. His prominence as a physician obscured his skills as an eloquent orator in the cause of Christ, but he was later to display a considerable talent as an artist whose icon of the Virgin Mary he gave to the Mother of God herself and which is now the prized possession of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Although his skill as a physician and his talent as an artist may have by themselves given St. Luke a small place in history, it was his consummate gift as a writer that made him one of the greatest figures in all Christendom. Luke s contribution to the cause of Jesus Christ are beyond all measure, and his early influence on the Christian scene had enabled the Christian Church to rise to its ever increasing influence in human experience. One has only to read the book of Acts, and his Gospel as well, to realize the stature of this most holy man; however, it is reserved to the privileged few who can comprehend classical Greek that the sheer beauty of his language can be appreciated. The praises of Luke as a writer may seem excessive, particularly since he is one of many authors represented in the New Testament, chief among whom are St. Matthew (the man), St. Mark (the lion), and St. John (the eagle). Among these, the fourth, St. Luke, suffers in comparison with the title St. Luke (the calf). But out of the twenty-seven books comprising the New Testament, none shines with the brilliance of those composed by St. Luke. He is considered to have excelled beyond the others in expressiveness, historical method, sensitivity of narrative, and idiomatic phrasing. The patron saint of physicians and artists, St. Luke is surrounded by many legends and traditions that have not withstood the test of time. The discounted accounts of his martyrdom must now give way to the actual facts of life. It is known that he remained a bachelor all of his life, devoting himself to the utmost degree to the cause of Christ. When advancing years curbed his campaigning, he withdrew to write his memorable accounts and died in Thebes at the age of eighty-four. An appraisal of the contributions to Christianity by St. Luke cannot be measured by the number of words he wrote, the miles he traveled in missionary journeys, or the number of years he spent in exclusive dedication to the service of Jesus Christ. St. Luke, like so many who have given so much to all of us, is not to be appraised, only to be honored.
