Parish News Winter Hours - Starting Sunday, September 16th Starting Sunday, September 16th, we will revert back to the winter service schedule: Orthros 9:00 a.m., Divine Liturgy: 10:00 a.m. Thank You to All! On behalf of the Parish Council and the 2012 Greekfest Committee, I would like to extend congratulations and gratitude to all of the volunteers and donors who contributed in any way in making this year s Greekfest successful. It could not have been possible without each and every one of you. Many of you put in countless hours planning during months of meetings, while others organized the baking and cooking preparations prior to the event. So many worked tirelessly, days before, during and after Greekfest. Although many believe that the hard work ends Sunday evening at the close of festivities, it does not. All the tables, chairs and supplies that are set up need to be taken down, and all the equipment, pots and pans need to be washed and put away as well. So, thank you to EVERYONE, including our Philoptochos members, our young adults, our Parish Council members and all the other volunteers who continued working and cleaning up all week after Greekfest was over. Our sincere gratitude, as well, to all those who supported this event by donating in any way, including our Corporate Sponsors, Ad/Program book donors and sponsors, and the food and supplies donors. It is this combined effort of so many coming together as one for the good our parish that makes me especially proud to be a member of the Assumption Church. Philoptochos News The Philoptochos Board will be meeting on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month. All Philoptochos members are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who devoted your time and expertise in baking, cleaning, serving, and working throughout the summer preparing for our Vesper Services and Greekfest 2012. I know we can count on all our members when we need the extra hands, but please don't wait for that call, VOLUNTEER!, as we prepare for our upcoming bazaar we need everyone's help and input. GARDENERS, a special request - We are in need of basil (vasiliko) for the services of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14th. Please call the church office if you can spare some. Just a reminder that our Annual Bazaar will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th. We encourage all members to participate. Once again we are asking for new items to raffle at our Penny Sale table. Look for more information in the October Bulletin. Youth News UPCOMING EVENTS Apple Picking - Sunday, September 30th Youth Ministry will have its first outing for the year. Every one is welcomed to attend. The location will be determined and announced as soon as possible. See page 14 for more details. J.O.Y. (Junior Orthodox Youth) - Youth Program for children ages 4-12 - Registration Sept. 9th *Registration for our J.O.Y. Program will be held on Sunday, September 9th following church services....the JOY program is designated for our youth ages 4-12. Various spiritual and social events will be held on a regular basis in order to give the children (and parents) an opportunity to spend time with each other while learning about matters of faith, culture and society. G.O.Y.A. (Greek Orthodox Young Adults) - Youth Program to our Young Adults ages 13-18 -- Registration Sept. 9th *Registration for our G.O.Y.A. Program will be held on Sunday, September 9th following church services....the G.O.Y.A. program is designated for our Young Adults ages 13-18 and offers them an opportunity to spend social time together while discussing and learning about our faith, culture and social issues. The group volunteers time and service to different events during the course of the year, and sponsor a number of Collections to donate to needy programs through the assistance and generosity of our parish community. PLEASE NOTE: ALL CHILDREN MUST BE REGISTERED AND A RELEASE FORM MUST BE SIGNED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN IN ORDER FOR A CHILD TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY YOUTH PROGRAM. 7

Spiritual Readings Η Ύψωσις του Τιμίου Σταυρού του Επισκόπου Διονυσίου Λ. Ψαριανού, Μητροπολίτου Σερβίων και Κοζάνης Σήμερα η εκκλησία εορτάζει την παγκόσμια ύψωση του τιμίου και ζωοποιού Σταυρού. Η εορτή είναι αρχαιότατη και μια από τις Δεσποτικές εορτές, τις εορτές δηλαδή τις αφιερωμένες στο Δεσπότη Χριστό. Η εορτή συνδέεται με μεγάλα ιστορικά γεγονότα της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας, γι αυτό έχει πανηγυρικό χαρακτήρα. Συγχρόνως όμως αναφέρεται στη σταύρωση και το θάνατο του Κυρίου, γι αυτό και τιμάται με αυστηρή νηστεία, όπως η Μεγάλη Παρασκευή. Το Ευαγγέλιο, που διαβάζεται στη θεία Λειτουργία, είναι το ίδιο που διαβάζεται και την Μεγ. Παρασκευή. Μέχρι πριν λίγα χρόνια η εορτή της Υψώσεως του τιμίου Σταυρού ήταν ημέρα γενικής αργίας, αλλά μετά τον πόλεμο οι εργάσιμες ημέρες της εβδομάδος, ενώ από έξη έγιναν πέντε, η εορτή του Σταυρού έγινε εργάσιμη ημέρα. Το 326, ένα χρόνο μετά την πρώτη οικουμενική Σύνοδο, η αγία Ελένη πήγε στα Ιεροσόλυμα, να προσκυνήσει τους αγίους τόπους και να ευχαριστήσει το Θεό, για τις νίκες και τις θριαμβευτικές επιτυχίες του παιδιού της και πρώτου χριστιανού αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου. Τότε έκτισε διάφορους ναούς, όπως στο όρος των Ελαιών και στο σπήλαιο της Βηθλεέμ. Με διαταγή του Κωνσταντίνου ανέλαβε να κτίσει μεγάλο ναό στο λόφο του Γολγοθά, εκεί που σταυρώθηκε ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Εκεί, πριν από διακόσια χρόνια, ο αυτοκράτορας Αδριανός, για να εμποδίσει τους χριστιανούς να προσκυνούν τον άγιο τόπο, είχε ανεγείρει ναό αφιερωμένο στην Αφροδίτη. Η αγία Ελένη κατεδάφισε τον ειδωλολατρικό ναό, ξεκαθάρισε τον τόπο, εξακρίβωσε τη θέση που σταυρώθηκε ο Κύριος και βρήκε τον τίμιο Σταυρό. Η είδηση ότι βρέθηκε ο τίμιος Σταυρός διαδόθηκε σ όλο τον τότε χριστιανικό κόσμο. ΈΈτρεξαν λοιπόν όλοι, και μάλιστα οι πιστοί της Παλαιστίνης, για να προσκυνήσουν το τίμιο ξύλο. ΌΌταν περατώθηκε ο ναός της Αναστάσεως, που έκτισε η αγία Ελένη επάνω στο λόφο του Γολγοθά, στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου του 336 έγιναν επίσημα και με κάθε λαμπρότητα τα εγκαίνια. Τότε ο Πατριάρχης των Ιεροσολύμων Μακάριος, επειδή το πλήθος του λαού ήταν πολύ, για να δουν όλοι και να προσκυνήσουν, ανέβηκε στον άμβωνα, που ήταν στη μέση του ναού και ύψωσε τον τίμιο Σταυρό. Οι πιστοί προσκυνούσαν, κάνοντας το σταυρό τους κι έλεγαν «Κύριε, ελέησον». Αυτή λοιπόν την ύψωση του τιμίου Σταυρού εορτάζει σήμερα η Εκκλησία και υψώνει τον τίμιο Σταυρό στη μέση του ναού. ΎΎστερα από 280 περίπου χρόνια, το 614, οι Πέρσες κυρίευσαν τα Ιεροσόλυμα, έκαναν μεγάλες καταστροφές, πήραν αιχμάλωτο τον Πατριάρχη Ζαχαρία και μαζί τη μεγάλη ασημένια λειψανοθήκη, στην οποία η αγία Ελένη είχε φυλάξει τον τίμιο Σταυρό. Ο αυτοκράτορας Ηράκλειος, ύστερα από 14 χρόνια, έκαμε εκστρατεία, έφτασε νικητής ως την πρωτεύουσα της Περσίας, ελευθέρωσε τους αιχμαλώτους χριστιανούς, πήρε τον τίμιο Σταυρό και τον πατριάρχη Ζαχαρία και γύρισε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Από εκεί κατέβηκε στα Ιεροσόλυμα, έβγαλε το βασιλικό στέμμα και ανυπόδητος, σηκώνοντας το κιβώτιο με το τίμιο Ξύλο το έφερε στο Γολγοθά. Εκεί, πάλι στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου και στο ναό της Αναστάσεως, ο Πατριάρχης Ζαχαρίας ύψωσε στον άμβωνα τον Σταυρό κι ο λαός έψαλλε «Σώσον, Κύριε τον λαόν σου». Η ανεύρεση του τιμίου Σταυρού από την αγία Ελένη και η δεύτερη ύψωσή του στον άμβωνα από τον Πατριάρχη Ζαχαρία συνοδεύονται με δύο θαύματα. Το πρώτο θαύμα είναι η θεραπεία μιας ετοιμοθάνατης γυναίκας. Η αγία Ελένη βρήκε 10
τρεις σταυρούς οι άλλοι δύο ήσαν των δύο ληστών. Γεννήθηκε λοιπόν απορία ποιός ήταν ο Σταυρός του Κυρίου. Εκεί κοντά βέβαια βρέθηκε η επιγραφή του Πιλάτου «Ιησούς ο Ναζωραίος ο Βασιλεύς των Ιουδαίων», αλλά ο Πατριάρχης Μακάριος άγγιξε την ετοιμοθάνατη γυναίκα με το τίμιο Ξύλο κι η άρρωστη αμέσως έγινε καλά. Το δεύτερο θαύμα είναι ό,τι ανεβαίνοντας με το τίμιο Ξύλο προς το Γολγοθά, ο αυτοκράτορας Ηράκλειος σταμάτησε και δεν μπορούσε να προχωρήσει. Τότε ο Πατριάρχης Ζαχαρίας του είπε κι έβγαλε το βασιλικό στέμμα και α υποδήματά του. Κι αμέσως ξεκίνησε. Η εκκλησία μας, ως γνωστόν, τιμά και προσκυνεί τιμητικά τα ιερά λείψανα των αγίων και τα άμφια της υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου. Πολύ περισσότερο τον τίμιο Σταυρό του Κυρίου, που είναι «ο φύλαξ πάσης της οικουμένης, η ωραιότης της Εκκλησίας και πιστών το στήριγμα». Από τότε που η αγία Ελένη βρήκε τον τίμιο Σταυρό στα Ιεροσόλυμα, είναι μέγιστο απόκτημα και θησαυρός για κάθε πόλη και μοναστήρι, που μπορεί να έχει ένα ελάχιστο κομμάτι από το τίμιο Ξύλο. Ο ηγούμενος και δυο μοναχοί της Μονής Ξηροποτάμου στο ΆΆγιο ΌΌρος το 1963 έφεραν στην Κοζάνη το τίμιο Ξύλο και προσκύνησε στον άγιο Νικόλαο όλος ο λαός και αγιάσθηκε ο τόπος μας. «Χριστός ο αληθινός Θεός ημών δυνάμει του τιμίου και ζωοποιού Σταυρού ελεήσαι και σώσαι ημάς.».
