JAMES MAROPOULAKIS DENNEY Jim, an attorney, is married to the former Marta Cole, has five children and four grandchildren. He organized the Peroulakis/Theodorakis Mahoning Valley Ohio Chapter in 2002, and serves as the current president. Previously he served as PAA National Legal Advisor for four terms and District III Governor for one term. He also currently serves as an advisor and legal counsel on the Hellenic Project, which produces documentaries on the Greek Roots of Western Civilization. 2. MARIA MATSAMAKIS Maria (Kladis) Matsamakis was born in Chicago. After graduating Loyola University with a degree in psychology, she married Dimitri Matsamakis and moved to Michigan, where they had two beautiful boys, Timmy and Niko. ΜΉΝΥΜΑ ΠΡΟΈΔΡΟΥ A Month of Freedom and Dignity Panagiotis Psarakis PAA President Takisps@verizon.net Dear Compatriots, October 28 marks the 75th anniversary of OXI Day. On that day, in 1940, Greece said NO to Italy s request to station their troops in Greece and demonstrated Greece s resolve to resist the Italian (and German) invasion. The resulting change in strategy by the Italians and later by the Germans ultimately influenced the course of World War II events. Winston Churchill paid homage to the Greek resistance by claiming, until now we would say that the Greeks fight like heroes. From now on we will say that heroes fight like Greeks! This month also commemorates the 86th anniversary of the Pancretan Association of America. On October 14, 1929, the leaders of several independent Cretan organizations across the country met in Chicago and formed the then-called Pancretan Union in America. The legacy continues! During our National Board teleconference in July, the members of the Editorial Board for KPHTH Magazine were submitted and ratified by our officers. Helene Semanderes was appointed Chair and Chryssoula Barbas, Amalia Lagoudakis Kalogridakis and Chrysoula Tzortzakis joined the editorial board along with current members Tina Katsounakis and Helen Ranney. Under the direction of 2nd Vice President Kostas Tsiskakis and the Editorial Staff, our goal is to deliver a vibrant publication that highlights news of our organization and showcases our rich Cretan culture and traditions through words and pictures. We appreciate their strong commitment and hope you continue to support KPHTH magazine. This year, for the holiday issue, we have added a new category, Snowflakes, giving you more options to express your greetings to your family and friends. I urge you to review and submit your order form early to ensure the holiday issue can be prepared and distributed in a timely fashion. My short trip to Crete was very productive. There, along with Ms. Amalia Kalogridakis, we were able to visit and exchange thoughts/ideas of cooperation with most of the authorities. Also, I have the pleasure to inform you that a very intelligent cleric and musician, Rev. George Tzavlas, from the Lasithi region, will be representing the PAA along with Amalia in Crete. Rev. G. Tzavlas was the lead chanter in our great PAA event History of the Church of Crete. On behalf of the entire board and our membership, our deepest gratitude is extended to Mr. George Thanopoulos and Mr. John Sifakis for their generous donations to our scholarship fund. Their contributions will strengthen our commitment to assist our youth as they pursue their continuing education. Thank you all for being part of PAA. Have a great month. Panagiotis Psarakis President Μήνας Ελευθερίας και Αξιοπρέπειας Α γαπητοί συμπατριώτες, 28 Οκτωβρίου σηματοδοτεί την 75η επέτειο της ημέρας του «ΟΧΙ». Εκείνη την ημέρα, το 1940, η Ελλάδα είπε «ΟΧΙ» στο αίτημα της Ιταλίας να εγκαταστήσει τα στρατεύματα της στην Ελλάδα, και επέδειξε την απόφαση της Ελλάδας να αντισταθεί στην ιταλική (και γερμανική) εισβολή. Η προκύπτουσα αλλαγή στρατηγικής από τους Ιταλούς και αργότερα από τους Γερμανούς τελικά επηρέασε την πορεία των γεγονότων του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Ο Ουίνστον Τσόρτσιλ απέτισε φόρο τιμής στην ελληνική αντίσταση επικαλούμενος «. μέχρι τώρα θα λέγαμε ότι οι Έλληνες πολεμούν σαν ήρωες. Από τώρα και στο εξής θα λέμε ότι οι ήρωες πολεμούν σαν Έλληνες»! Αυτό τον μήνα, επίσης, εορτάζουμε την 86η επέτειο της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης της Αμερικής. Στις 14 Οκτωβρίου 1929, οι ηγέτες διαφόρων κρητικών οργανώσεων σε ολόκληρη την χώρα συναντήθηκαν στο Σικάγο και συγκρότησαν την τότε αποκαλούμενη «Παγκρητική Οργάνωση στην Αμερική». Η κληρονομιά συνεχίζεται. Κατά τη διάρκεια τηλεδιάσκεψης του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου μας τον Ιούλιο, τα ονόματα των μελών της Συντακτικής Επιτροπής του περιοδικού ΚΡΗΤΗ υποβλήθηκαν και επικυρώθηκαν από το συμβούλιο μας. Η Ελένη Σημαντήρη διορίστηκε πρόεδρος, και οι Χρυσούλα Μπάρμπα, Τίνα Κατσουνάκη, Αμαλία Λαγουδάκη Καλογριδάκη, Ελένη Ράνεϊ και Χρυσούλα Τζωρτζάκη αποτελούν μέλη της Επιτροπής. Υπό την καθοδήγηση του Δευτέρου Αντιπροέδρου, Κώστα Τσισκάκη, και του συντακτικού προσωπικού, στόχος μας είναι να παρέχουμε ένα έντυπο ποιότητας που δίνει έμφαση στις ειδήσεις της οργάνωσής μας και επιδεικνύει τον πλούσιο κρητικό πολιτισμό και τις παραδόσεις μας μέσα από λέξεις και εικόνες. Εκτιμάμε την μεγάλη αφοσίωση τους και ελπίζουμε ότι θα συνεχίσετε να υποστηρίζετε το περιοδικό ΚΡΗΤΗ! Φέτος, στο Χριστουγεννιάτικο τεύχος, έχουμε προσθέσει μια νέα κατηγορία - «Νιφάδες» - που σας δίνει περισσότερες επιλογές να εκφράσετε τους γιορτινούς χαιρετισμούς σας στην οικογένεια και στους φίλους σας. Επίσης, είμαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ενημερώσω, ότι ο αξιοσέβαστος κληρικός και μουσικός, πρωτοπρεσβύτερος Γεώργιος Τζάβλας, από την περιοχή του Λασιθίου, θα εκπροσωπεί την ΠΕΑ μαζί με την Αμαλία στην Κρήτη. Ο πρωτοπρεσβύτερος Γ. Τζάβλας ήταν ο πρωτοψάλτης στην μεγάλη εκδήλωση της ΠΕΑ «Ιστορία της Εκκλησίας της Κρήτης». Εκ μέρους ολόκληρου του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και των μελών μας, επεκτείνουμε την βαθύτατη ευγνωμοσύνη μας στους κ. Γεώργιο Θανόπουλο και κ. ΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΑ so very much, and the value it holds, to me, was only heightened by my participation in the convention and my family trip to Crete this summer. The Pancretan Association has granted me financial awards, yes, but the biggest award I have ever received from the PAA was my opportunity to learn how to dance. I have danced for my home chapter, Arkadi-Maleme, for almost ten years now, which has proven to be one of the most rewarding, most enjoyable experiences of my life. I grew up with it, I am extremely passionate about it, and I cannot imagine what my life would have been like without it. I ll begin my sophomore year at the University of Pittsburgh this September. I m a writing major, and I am looking to double major in marketing. I m also a member of the varsity marching band, and a writer for the Pitt News. Paying university bills is certainly not easy, but $2,000 will make a very significant contribution towards them. Thank you for establishing scholarship funds for young Cretan men and women such as myself. I know they ll continue to bless our lives for years to come. I appreciate this opportunity and this gift so very much. Alongside our professors and cleft palate organizations, we will provide speech therapy and hold workshops to train speech language pathologists in Ghana and Ethiopia about post-operational treatment. During my undergraduate career, I served as a research assistant in the Towson University Literacy Lab and presented my research at the National Speech Language Hearing Association Convention. In addition, I held various leadership positions, including treasurer of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, president of the Smile Train Club, and fundraising chair of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity. I will be attending the University of California at Davis, but am not sure what my major will be (yet). I am very proud of my Cretan heritage and culture. My great-grandparents on both sides came from Chania and were early members of Pancretan. In fact, my Kelaidis (Callas) great-grandparents were founding members of chapters in Denver and my other great-grandparents were all active in their chapters in San Francisco and Utah. My parents met at the 1983 Cretan Youth Convention in San Francisco and have continued their involvement through the years. My brother and I learned Cretan dances from Vasilis and Effie Fourakis and have performed in California, in Greece (including Crete, of course!) and most recently at the Salt Lake Convention. Dance, for us, is a huge part of our culture and heritage and we love it! ΝΕΑ ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟΥ Meet the New Scholarship Chair Debbie Nikokavouras PAA Scholarship Chair debbien1747@gmail.com It is with great pleasure that I have accepted the responsibility of the Venizelion Scholarship Chair. I have over 20 years of experience in the field of education, with a master s degree in leadership administration from National-Louis University in Chicago. I am in my seventh year as a vice principal in a Chicago Public School and have been a Sunday School director for ten years at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago. My Cretan roots and appreciation of the Cretan culture has inspired my family and me to be active in our culture and traditions. Currently, I am serving as the vice president of the Cretan Ladies of Amalthia. My husband, Laki, is serving as District 4 lieutenant governor, and our children, Kalliopi and Evie, are active members of the Chicago Cretan Dance Group. As a devoted educator, I pledge to continue to seek donors to carry forward this most admirable cause. I also believe that united we can accomplish more. I intend to work with our district governors to refine the online application process. In addition, I would like to collaborate with the San Francisco Convention chairs to host a meet and greet for the scholarship donors and recipients at the 2017 PAA National Convention. I am proud and honored to have the opportunity to participate in this worthy program, and look forward to helping young Cretan adults pursue their dream to a higher education. With these degrees in hand, I then plan to enter a well-developed pharmacy program through the University of Florida, home of the fighting gators. This pharmacy program is offered at our local community college as part of a university partnership. ΝΕΑ ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΙΟΥ FROM THE BOARD Women s Executive Director Report Roxanne Kotronakis Koston Women s Executive Director Roxannekoston01@hotmail.com Dear members of our Pancretan Association of America and friends, Greetings to you all from sunny California, the home of the 2017 San Francisco PAA Convention. After many years of serving the sixth district, I was elected women s executive director at the PAA National Convention in Salt Lake City. Many thanks to Kosta Katsohirakis and the entire committee and membership for an unforgettable, outstanding, wonderful and fun convention. It will be hard to top such a successful convention. It is a privilege to have been elected women s executive director and to join the ranks of women who have served our association before me. With help and advice from our respected former women s executive directors, I intend to serve our chapters to the best of my abilities. My intention is to inspire and ignite a new spark in our women s chapters and all women members in every chapter within the PAA. We have exciting ideas and programs that I can help implement; and, with the help from our chapter ladies, we can make a difference. I am excited about my new position and I look forward to meeting many of our members. We can restore the excitement of just being together with a cup of coffee, thinking of fun things to organize and do. This past summer while in Χανιά, Κρήτη, I was fortunate to meet with many ladies from the New York chapters. We met in a coffee shop and visited for hours. While enjoying a delicious frappe and fresh orange juice, we talked about how we would meet again in New York and at our chapters. I thank the gentlemen who escorted their wives and treated us all in celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Tsangarakis anniversary as well. We then continued to Georgioupolis for a great lunch, courtesy of Mr. Xenakis. Ladies present at the coffee shop were: Maria Stratoudakis, Voula Vrionakis, Eleftheria Xenakis, Koula Xenakis, Evangelia Maroulakis, Elpida Tsontakis, Dina Arvanitidou, Tasoula Mihail, Georgia Kalinderakis, Christina Diamantakis and Eleni Tsangarakis. ΝΕΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΚΡΗΤΗ Πάει κι αυτό το καλοκαίρι... Το κρητικό καλοκαίρι έφτασε κι αυτό στο τέλος του, σαφέστατα νωρίτερα από το αντίστοιχο αμερικάνικο, αλλά ειδικότερα φέτος, νωρίτερα από τα κρητικά καλοκαίρια του παρελθόντος. Φταίνε οι κλιματικές αλλαγές, φταίει η μέχρι τώρα πολιτική αστάθεια της χώρας, φταίει το φλέγον ζήτημα των άμοιρων προσφύγων στα νησιά μας, πάντως το σίγουρο είναι ότι όλοι οι Έλληνες «λουζόμαστε» κάτω από τα πρωτοβρόχια του φθινοπώρου σε μια προσπάθεια εξαγνισμού και επανεκκίνησης. Είχα την τιμή να συνοδέψω τον πρόεδρο, κύριο Ψαράκη, σε μία πολύ σύντομη περιοδεία στο νησί, στην προσπάθεια να συναντήσουμε τοπικούς παράγοντες/άρχοντες ώστε να διαδώσουμε το έργο της ΠΕΑ. Θεωρώ ότι αυτό που αποκομίσαμε και οι δύο είναι ότι, παρά τις αντίξοες συνθήκες, το σθένος των Κρητικών παραμένει αλώβητο. Πιστεύω, όμως, ακράδαντα ότι μας δίδεται άλλη μια φορά η ευκαιρία να σταθούμε στο πλευρό της χώρας μας για να την βοηθήσουμε να βγει από αυτές τις δύσκολες συγκυρίες, όπως κάναμε και μεταπολεμικά. Είναι σημαντικό να σημειώσω ότι ο Κρητικός όσο και να τον χτυπούν, δεν «γέρνει», και ότι θα πρέπει να συντονίσουμε όλες μας τις φιλανθρωπικές προσπάθειες με διακριτικότητα και ανθρωπιά, και όχι με απώτερο σκοπό την αυτοπροβολή και τις φανφάρες. Γι αυτό το κομμάτι, της ταπεινότητας και της μετριοφροσύνης, είμαι σίγουρη, καθώς είναι συνυφασμένο με τον χαρακτήρα του προέδρου μας. Τέλος, είμαι ιδιαίτερα χαρούμενη για την έναρξη της συνεργασίας μας με τον Πατέρα Γεώργιο Τζάβλα από το Λασίθι. Ο παπα-γιώργης θα είναι αντιπρόσωπος της οργάνωσής μας στην ανατολική Κρήτη για την καλύτερη, αποτελεσματικότερη και πιο άμεση αντιμετώπιση ζητημάτων. Στο επόμενο τεύχος, θα του παραχωρήσω την στήλη μου έτσι ώστε να σας συστηθεί και να τον γνωρίσετε καλύτερα. Είναι ένας άνθρωπος του πνεύματος, αναγνωρισμένος για το έργο του, που έχει άκομα πολλά να προσφέρει, και με μεγάλη όρεξη για δουλειά. Καλό φθινόπωρο σε όλους. Whether it was because of the awkward weather, the political instability of the country, or the raging refugee crisis, one thing is for certain: Fall is an opportunity to press the reset button and get things going. I was honored to accompany President Psarakis on his recent visit to Crete this past month. While his time was limited, we had the opportunity to meet with local government officials to talk about the mission of the PAA. What struck me during all our meetings was, that despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the homeland, Cretans continue to conduct themselves with dignity and grace. Notwithstanding, it is once again our turn to give back to the birthplace of our forefathers and to coordinate all philanthropic efforts with discretion and humility. Finally, I am especially happy to announce the beginning of our collaboration with Father Georgios Tzavlas from Lasithi. Father George will represent the PAA in Eastern Crete and that way our response in that area will be faster and more effective. He is well known for his philanthropic and cultural work, and especially his contribution to traditional music, as he is a master of the kanonaki. In our next issue, Fr. Καλογριδάκη Λαγουδάκη αφού ενημερώθηκαν από το Δήμαρχο για τη λειτουργία του Δήμου, τις υπηρεσίες και τους τομείς αρμοδιότητάς του με έμφαση την κοινωνική πολιτική για την ανακούφιση των ασθενέστερων δημοτών, εξέφρασαν την πρόθεση της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής να συνδράμει στην ενίσχυση του Δημοτικού Ιατρείου, της νέας σημαντικής δομής που ετοιμάζει η Δημοτική Αρχή στην πόλη. Όπως ανέφεραν στο Δήμαρχο είναι ενημερωμένοι για τη συστηματική προσπάθεια που συντελείται στον τομέα της Κοινωνικής Πολιτικής και τις δράσεις που υλοποιεί ο Δήμος, παρά τις αντιξοότητες, και γι αυτό το λόγο επιθυμούν να βοηθήσουν όσο μπορούν, με την αποστολή ποσότητας ιατρικών αναλώσιμων για τις ανάγκες λειτουργίας του Δημοτικού Ιατρείου. ΝΕΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΚΡΗΤΗ NEWS FROM CRETE 10:30 π.μ. Συνάντηση με τον Σταύρο Αρναουτάκη. Ο Περιφερειάρχης Κρήτης επανέλαβε στον Πρόεδρο Ψαράκη ότι η Περιφέρεια Κρήτης ήταν, είναι και θα είναι δίπλα στην ΠΕΑ, γιατί αποτελεί το καλύτερο πρεσβευτή της Κρήτης στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Ο Περιφερειάρχης υπογράμμισε παράλληλα ότι, η προσφορά των Αποδήμων Κρητών είναι συνεχής για την ανάπτυξη, την τουριστική προβολή της Κρήτης, του πολιτισμού της, για την προώθηση των κρητικών προϊόντων στις διεθνείς αγορές. Επισήμανε δε, ότι στο πολιτιστικό κομμάτι, η περιφέρεια θα είναι αρωγός σε ολες τις προσπάθειες του Πρόεδρου Ψαράκη. Συνάντηση με Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κρήτης κ.κ. Ειρηναίο Με τον ταπεινό, και σχεδόν ασκητικό, Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κρήτης, Σεβασμιώτατο κ.κ. Ειρηναίο συναντήθηκε ο πρόεδρος, η σύζυγός του, και η αντιπρόσωπος της ΠΕΑ. Το γραφείο του Σεβασμιωτάτου ήταν κατάμεστο από συμπολίτες που βρίσκονταν εκεί για να του ζητήσουν βοήθεια, σε όλους του οποίους προσφέρθηκε την δροσερό κέρασμα για να ανακουφιστούν από την ζέστη και υγρασία. Κατά τη διάρκεια της συζήτησης, έμφαση δόθηκε στο ζήτημα της νεολαίας και μιας μελλοντικής συνεργασίας με τις νεανικές κατασκηνώσεις της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής. Βραδινή συνάντηση με τον Πατέρα Γεώργιο Τζάβλα. Συζήτηση με θέμα την αποτελεσματική αντιπροσώπευση της ΠΕΑ στο Λασίθι. ΠΕΜΠΤΗ 10/9 10 π.μ. Συνάντηση με δήμαρχο Ρεθύμνου κ. Γιώργη Μαρινάκη. Θερμή και εποικοδομητική ήταν η συνάντηση με τον δήμαρχο Ρεθύμνου. Ενημερώθηκε για τις σημαντικές δράσεις της ΠΕΑ και των συλλόγων της. Στο πλαίσιο της συνεργασίας κατέθεσαν όλοι την κοινή τους αγωνία για να διατηρηθεί ο Ελληνισμός της Διασποράς, των επομένων πλέον γενεών, ζωντανός, ακμαίος, να μιλά την Ελληνική γλώσσα και να μυηθεί στην ιστορία, τα ήθη και την παράδοση του τόπου καταγωγής τους. Σε αυτό το πνεύμα συμφώνησαν σε κοινές δράσεις πολιτισμού και ο δήμαρχος δώρισε στον πρόεδρο και την αντιπρόσωπο αρκετά αντίτυπα βιβλίων για τις βιβιλιοθήκες της οργάνωσής μας. Ευγένιο. Η συνάντηση με τον Σεβασμιώτατο έγινε σε κλίμα φιλικό και άνετο, καθώς μόλις είχε τελειώσει την συνάντησή του με παράγοντες του Αναγεννησιακού φεστιβάλ που βρίσκονταν στην πόλη του Ρεθύμνου. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος ρωτήθηκε για την ανθρωπιστική κρίση που περνάει η χώρα μας, και επεσήμανε ότι η Μητρόπολις χειρίζεται τα περιστατικά της πόλης με διακριτικότητα και σεβασμό προς τον συνάνθρωπο. Φυσικά, από την συζήτηση δεν μπορούσε να λείπει εκτενή αναφορά στις επετειακές εκδηλώσεις για το Ολοκαύτωμα του Αρκαδίου, για το οποίο ο Σεβασμιώτατος έδωσε την ευχή του να πραγματοποιηθούν εκδηλώσεις στη διασπορά με το θέμα αυτό. ΡΕΠΟΡΤΑΖ OXI Day This year marks the 75th Anniversary of one very small phrase that had a very great impact on the outcome of World War II. On October 28, 1940, the Italian ambassador to Greece, Emanuele Grazzi delivered an ultimatum from Benito Mussolini to Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas. The ultimatum demanded the entry of the Italian army and the occupation of Greek territory. Metaxas resoundingly replied in French: Alors, c est la guerre ( Then it is war ), a phrase that was quickly transmuted into Oxi by the citizens of Athens. Shortly after the response to the ultimatum, the Axis forces descended on Greece, expecting that it would quickly fall, but the Greek resistance forced Hitler to change his plans. This delay changed the course of World War II. A letter from U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the Ambassador to Greece praising the heroism of the Greeks was sent on October 29, 1942. SPECIAL REPORT All free peoples are deeply impressed by the courage and steadfastness of the Greek nation. Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States 1933-1945 My Dear Mr. Ambassador: On the early morning of October 28, 1940, the Fascist aggressors handed an ultimatum to Greece. The challenge was hurled back without a moment s hesitation. This was what might have been expected from a gallant and courageous people devoted to their homeland. You commemorate tonight the second anniversary of the beginning of the total resistance of the Greek people to totalitarian warfare. More significant, even, than the initial reply to the challenge is the fact that Greece has continued to fight, with every means at its command. When the Greek mainland was overrun, the resistance was carried on from the islands. When the islands fell, resistance continued from Africa, from the seas, from anywhere the aggressor could be met. To those who prefer to compromise, to follow a course of expediency, or to appease, or to count the cost, I say that Greece has set the example which every one of us must follow until the despoilers of freedom everywhere have been brought to their just doom.
