THE PASTOR S LETTER November 2010 Νοέμβριος 2010 Dear Parishioners: November the fifteenth marks the beginning of Advent, the Christmas Lent. As our life intensifies on our journey to receive the incarnate Christ into our souls and homes during the Christmas Feast, let us not forget our neighbor in need. Let us call to our fingertips and implement the evangelical precepts of love, fasting, mercy, repentance, forgiveness, charity, humility, meekness, justice, peace, and reading of the scriptures. Ultimately, let us receive worthily and sacramentally Communion with the Most Holy Trinity through the Immaculate Flesh and Blood of the Son of Man / the Son of God. Indeed, our relationships with others should model the Community of the Holy Trinity. As God is love, and as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit live in a Community of love, so must we. Let us focus on the lives of the Saints. For, they have achieved the state of theosis that we all strive for from the moment of our Orthodox Baptism. Let us use them as examples of Christian Champions worthy of emulation. God bless you and keep you. In Christ our Lord, +Protopresbyter Constantine G. Christofis, Ph.D. PRESIDENTS COLUMN Dear Parishioners, As I like to do, I want to begin my column by saying thank you. First, I want to thank everyone who volunteered and supported this year s Greek Glendi. The weather during the first day made it a bit worrisome but thankfully, the crowds did come on both days. With this being the second year we held the Glendi, I am pleased to report that the overall gross revenue figure increased approximately 10% compared with last year. Also, many of our guests from the community who attended commented on how much they enjoyed the idea of a fall Greek festival. I also want to thank everyone who supported the third annual Holy Trinity Golf Outing. Due to the weather, the date of the golf outing was postponed to October 18. I am happy to say that nearly 40 golfers went out, enjoyed a day of fellowship and made their mark on the course. Many thanks to the organizing committee Milt Misogianes, Sotiere Marinis, David Vande Poele and Evan Papanicholas for all their hard work. I especially want to thank Marinis Brothers for their generous support as well as all the sponsors and golfers. As was reported in the General Assembly meeting, the church s 2011 operating budget has further been reduced. Since 2009, the Parish Council has cut the budget nearly 10%. While the budget is some good news, unfortunately the extreme amount of rain we received on September 30/ October 1 caused the roof over the church offices to leak. We are embarking on repairing this new damage to this roof as quickly as possible. The Parish Council will again sponsor a New Year s Eve Party with Neo Kyma. I hope you and your family can join us as we welcome 2011. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. As always, please contact any Parish Council member or me if we can be of any assistance. In addition to my phone number listed in the front of the bulletin, please feel free to email me at spiros.mantzavinos@verizon.net. Thank you.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS There are currently 140 students registered for the 2010-2011 school year. Add to this number 17 gifted and faithful teachers and 9 ready, willing, and faithful substitutes and the result is a truly terrifically blessed Church school! As a group we are sponsoring this Fall season a coat drive. All new and gently used coats donated will be given to the Big Brother/Big Sister of Delaware. Please consider donating a coat--it can be for a child, teenager, or adult. The coats can be dropped off in the classroom wing. The collection will end on Sunday, November 21st. We will also collect hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves for the Ministry of Caring. These may be dropped off with the coats, but this collection will run until the middle of January 2011. This year we were blessed with many volunteers, who cheerfully gave of their time to work at the Glendi. While a successful Glendi ensures that much needed physical improvements to our buildings and property will continue, it also means much more. Working at the Glendi has a way of uniting all of us in showcasing our church and culture to the Wilmington community. This month we will be celebrating Thanksgiving. We here have much for which to be thankful. A recent United Nations study reports that over 99% of the world s inhabitants today exist on less than two dollars a day, and many survive in perpetual hunger. Some, unfortunately, live right here in the Wilmington area. We are grateful to our unsung parishioners who each month offer their time, talent and treasure to the Wilmington community Emmanuel Dining Room and the Ministry of Caring. That s Orthodox stewardship in action, and this example of stewardship also showcases our church and culture. If you would like to help, please call the church office. Also, don t forget the food gift boxes located in the Narthex and outside the church office door. The food items you drop off mean much to the needy, especially this time of year. As we near year end, some of our parishioners have not yet pledged or offered a financial contribution for the 2010 year. We invite you to join the 2010 list of stewards, so that the ministries of our Holy Trinity community may continue unabated. There is no admission charge for attending church. We don t believe in dues. Each person s gift is dictated by personal circumstances. As always, all stewardship contributions, large or small, are kept confidential. At the heart of our Orthodox Christian Stewardship is gratitude in response to God s rich blessings, which He has bestowed on us freely, lovingly, and abundantly. Saint Paul, referring to the generosity of the Macedonians, wrote: They gave beyond their means, of their own free will but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. (2 Corinthians 8:3, 5) We are now able to take Visa & Mastercard payments for pledges/offerings. Please contact the church office for information on how to use this service.
Are thoughts of turkey, stuffing, potatoes and all the trimmings filling your head? We are so blessed in our community. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS The ladies of the Philoptochos joined with our community to help with our Second Annual Glendi. I would like to thank all the ladies who worked hard for two days to sell the pastries. We had a lot of positive feedback from the community at large about this event. We conducted our Board and General meetings on Tuesday, October 19th. We were able to discuss and plan our activities for the rest of the year. The meetings took place in the Philoptochos room on the balcony. I would like to bring to your attention a change in our Annual Schedule. We usually have our main fundraiser of the year in the spring. This year we are holding our Bid and Buy in November. Saturday, November 6, 2010 to be exact. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information. I hope everyone can attend. We anticipate a fun-filled afternoon. Also in November, we will once again be collecting for Thanksgiving. On Sunday, November 21st, we will pass a tray for this worthy cause. If you would rather mail your donation, please see the flyer in this bulletin for further information. We will hold Board and General meetings in November. Our Board meeting will be held on Sunday, November 14th after the coffee hour. The General meeting will be held on Saturday, November 20 th at 10:30 am. Both meetings will take place in our room on the balcony. This December, let the ladies of the Philoptochos make your holidays a bit easier. In this bulletin, you will find two flyers that should do that. Again this year we will be baking our delicious Christopsomo. The attached flyer will tell you how to order your breads and when to pick them up. The breads make wonderful Christmas gifts and also freeze very well. Another way we can help make your holidays a breeze is with our Christmas Card. We print and mail the card with your name to all your friends, neighbors, and relatives so that you don t have to. I would like to call your attention to an important event that the Philoptochos sponsors every year in December. It is the Communion Breakfast. This event had been sponsored by a late member of our parish who left money in his will so that the children of the community have a special breakfast every year. When the funds ran out, the ladies of the Philoptochos stepped in to continue this annual event. This year it will be held on Sunday, December 19th. There will be breakfast for all the children of our community and coffee hour for the adults. We will also take a break from working with our Annual Christmas Luncheon. It will be held on Saturday, December 11th at the Mendenhall Inn. Please join us for a fun afternoon filled with good food, good people and surprises. Again refer to our flyer in this bulletin for more information. On behalf of all the ladies of the Philoptochos, I wanted to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving. Maroula Haralambidis

28 th October 1940 Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas 15 th August, 1940. While the Hellenes were observing the Assumption of Virgin Mary an Italian submarine, without any warning sank the Greek torpedo destroyer Elli, which was docked in the harbor of Tenos. This was the prelude of the attack against Greece of the fascistic Italy, ally of the nazi Germany. The rest of the Western Europe, except for Sweden and Finland, who were allies of Germans, and Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland, was under the German yoke. Turkey was and remained neutral until 10 days before the end of the Second World War at which time it joined the allied forces. At 3 o clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940, the ambassador of Italy in Athens gave an ultimatum to the prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, demanding permission for the Italian army to go through Greece on its way to Middle East. The Middle East oil was necessary for both Italy and Germany because they did not have sufficient energy resources. Greece s prime minister answer was NO ( OXI ). Italy s dictator Mussolini threatened to send 8 million bayonets, one for each Hellene, to occupy Hellas. Only two hours after the ultimatum to the prime minister, the Italian troops attacked Hellas: from its borders with Albania at 5 o clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940. The state radio of Athens announced in a laconic way that the Hellenic troops are defending the motherland. The Greek people, worthy of their glorious ancestors, responded enthusiastically to the mobilization to defend their country. They went to the front with all possible means. The Greek women, like the ancient Spartans mothers, were saying good-bye to their beloved husbands, sons and brothers and urging them to return home victorious. Italy was militarily superior to Greece. It had a much bigger army, superior air force and advanced weapons. In contrast, Greece s main weapon was the decisiveness of its people to die for their freedom and independence. People willing to die for its freedom is a prerequisite for winning the war. The Hellenes, in a few days after the sudden attack, counterattacked successfully. Names of towns like Sarantaporo, Tepeleni, Argyrokastro and Hagioi Saranta always remind us of the heroism and triumph of the Hellenes in the Greco-Italian war of 1940. The mountains of Epiros and of Northern Epiros became the grave for the attacking Italians. Within six months, despite the efforts of the Italians and Mussolini s personal efforts, the Hellenes had pushed the Italians well within Albania. They almost threw them in the Adriatic sea. The victory of Hellenes was the first victory of the allies of the Second World War. Winston Churchill, who afterwards was called the Father of The Victory, said in admiring the Hellenes for their victories, that from now on we will not say that the Hellenes fight like heroes but the heroes fight like the Hellenes. The contribution of the Greek women in the war was tremendous. They were sending packages with food and clothes which they had themselves knitted for the fighting soldiers. But not only this. The heroic women of Epiros, worthy descendants of the women of Souli, walking in the mud of the snowed mountains of Epiros, were carrying ammunition and food for the soldiers on their shoulders. The victory of the Hellenes against the Italians delayed the Hitler s attack to Russia for six months. This delay forced the Germans to fight the Russians during the heavy Russian winter of 1942 with disastrous for them results. However, the cost of the Greco-Italian war, the German occupation that followed and the civil war were disproportionally heavy for Greece. From 1940-1950, out of 8 million Greeks there were one million dead, many wounded handicapped people, a completely destroyed country, and created seven hundred thousand refuges. The price Hellas paid for its independence was very heavy. Let their example inspire us to always raise our voice and our sword in defense of liberty and justice. Let the memory of the fallen brothers of ours stay with us eternally.
