THE SOURCE December 2014 Issue # 12-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Back in October I was visiting the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Archangels in Texas with two of my sons and my father (who lives in Texas we were there to visit my parents) and was given a book of Fr. Justin Popovich s writings recently translated from Serbian. I had read some of his essays in seminary so I was very excited to receive this gift. Fr. Justin was a loving pastor and spiritual director of monks and lay people and also a profound student of scriptures and patristic writings. Fr. Justin s writing is clear and is a wonderful integration and distillation of the Church Fathers, to the point where he is a modern day Father of the Church in my estimation anyway. The following excerpt from Fr. Justin s book is better than anything I had in mind for the Christmas issue of The Source, and an excellent reminder of what Christmas is all about. With love in Christ, +Fr. Mark Perfect God-man and Perfect Man A Nativity Epistle written by Archimandrite Justin Popovich. Christ is born! God-man is born on earth, and moreover He is born as a man: perfect God and perfect man the unique God-man. And He has forever remained as the God-man both on earth and in heaven. Indeed, the God-man is the first perfect man on earth. Perfect man? Yes, because only in the God-man is man without sin, without evil, without death, totally filled with God, and thereby filled with all divine perfections. The God-man has demonstrated and proved this most convincingly: man is only a true man when he is completely united with God, and in everything and every way completely lives in God, thinks in God, feels in God, acts in God, is virtuous in God, is immortal in God, is eternal in God. Only and solely in God is man a man, a true man, perfect man, a man in whom all the fullness of the Godhead lives. We can analyze this fundamental, evangelical, Divine-human truth about man.

THE SOURCE DECEMBER 2014 Page 2 The soul of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. The mind of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. (Continued on next page) The heart of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. The conscience of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. The will of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. The body of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. The life of man? Only and solely as the divine soul in the God-man does it become and forever remain sinless, immortal, Godlike, holy, perfect, eternal. Everything that man is, and everything that is of man, perfectly lives, works, thinks, feels, is human, is immortal, is divine, and is eternal only and solely in the God-man, and through the God-man. Only through the God-man, Christ, is man a divine majesty and the highest value next to God in all worlds. For this reason God became man, and has remained the God-man all eternity. With the God-man Christ, all that is God s has become man s, humanity s, ours, so that each of us individually, and all of us assembled together in the Divine-human Body of Christ, the Church, might become god-men [with a lower-case g here], having attained to a perfect man, to the the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:12-13) Therefore, the Nativity, which is the day of the birth of the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ, is the greatest and most important day in the history of all the worlds in which man moves and lives. Truly this is great joy truly this is the only true joy, the only eternal joy of a human being in all worlds. The God-man? This is the most important Event in all the worlds of man: the Ultimate Event. The God-man? This is the most important Justice in all the worlds of man: the Ultimate Justice. The God-man? This is the most important Love in all the worlds of man: the Ultimate Love. The God-man? This is the most important Good in all the worlds of man: the Ultimate Good. The God-man? This is the most important Man in all the worlds of man: the Ultimate Man. The God-man? This is the most important God of all the gods of man: the Ultimate God. On account of all this, the Nativity of Christ is our only Eternal Joy: The Ultimate Joy. The Joy of all joys, the Joy above all joys. Therefore, again and again: Hristos se Rodi! Christ is Born! The God-man is Born! Our deification is Born! Our Divine-human transformation is Born! + Fr. Justin Popovich

THE SOURCE DECEMBER 2014 Page 5 Dear Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL The Advent Season is here, encouraging us to participate in all its glory. The Church provides us with opportunities to invigorate our spiritual lives, throughout the year and especially during this special time of year, and we should take advantage. We are also entering a new calendar year, which many of us will mark by making New Year s Resolutions. If we have not taken advantage of our Ecclesiastical New Year, we have another opportunity to commit to our own spiritual growth in 2015. For myself, I thank God for the many blessings in my life, especially my family which now includes two son-in-laws, a daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter! The weddings of my children, the ordination of my son-in-law, and the baptism and chrismation of my first grandchild stand out as highlights. Witnessing the Sacraments of our Orthodox Church for my own family and for your families in my role on the parish council-- renews my faith and lightens the crosses that I bare in my own life. I am also reminded that there are many who carry crosses much heavier than mine. Indeed there is much suffering in this world. Elder Anthony of Optina, a Russian monk, said Of course it would be easier to get to paradise with a full stomach, all snuggled up on a soft feather-bed, but what is required is to carry one s cross along the way, for the Kingdom of God is not attained by enduring one or two troubles, but many. Our Faith tells us that the Lord has not neglected us, that He is with us every day. Presently, our parish may be going through trying times, being fired at high temperatures in the kiln of life, but, with Faith, just like a valuable ceramic we will come out of the fire much stronger than we entered it. As you may know, our parish will undertake projects in the near future in order to sustain our community for years to come, so that our children and grandchildren will grow in Faith in a vibrant and well-maintained church home. Renovations are needed and first will be the replacement of our mechanical systems, which will begin in the middle of January and be completed in the end of March. There are other renovations that will soon be discussed in the General Assembly: new carpeting and/or tile for the floors, replacement of the roof, sealing of the parking lot, and also adding more iconography to our church. Just as those who came before us sacrificed for our community and invested in our Cathedral, we have a responsibility to offer the highest level of support to sustain the Cathedral for future generations. It is a privilege as Orthodox Christians to do so and I hope all will agree on this. Also let us not neglect the most important project of all, that of rekindling the sense of belonging and community of our church. Thank you for allowing me to serve you as president for the last four years. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May we, like the shepherds and Magi, honor Christ s birth. John Harbilas President, Parish Council

THE SOURCE DECEMBER 2014 Page 6 PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS Dear Parishioners: The Board of Elections on Sunday, November 16, 2014, conducted the election of five members of the Parish Council in accordance with the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Archdiocese and our Parish Bylaws. THE SOURCE DECEMBER 2014 Page 15 +++++++++++ Christmas Services Wednesday 24 th 8:30am Royal Hours: This service is a ancient traditional preparation for the Christmas liturgies indicated below. In consists primarily of a collection of prophesies and New Testament readings surrounding the Nativity. The hymns also specifically sing about the events that surround the Nativity. Wednesday 24 th 8:00PM Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. Fasting guideline: receiving Holy Communion for this service does presuppose a day of fasting. The faithful are asked to abstain from all food and drink for least 7-8 hours before the service if they are strong enough, including children. If younger children need sustenance, the food should be as simple as possible, always with the anticipation of receiving the Holy Sacrament. Remember that fasting should also include other disciplines; such as finding moments of quiet, and seeking out forgiveness from others; and forgiving others. The faithful are also encouraged to embrace the gift of reconciliation through Holy Confession during the 40 days before Christmas (the season of 40 days begins November 15). THE SOURCE DECEMBER 2014 Page 17 HOLY TRINITY BOOKS & GIFTS God s Fullness for Our Emptiness - $11.00 This book addresses the great vacuum that exists in our lives and society today, i.e., the value vacuum, the moral vacuum, the spiritual vacuum, etc. Such a vacuum is dangerous because it leads people to fill up with countless forms of escapism. Yet emptiness is also a prelude to God. The author concentrates on how God can fill this emptiness to overflowing through faith, prayer, the sacraments, God's word, the Holy Spirit, etc. Whatever Happened to Truth? - $14.00 Sacred Symbols that Speak Vol. II - $12.00 This book presents a study of the major symbols used in the Orthodox Church. The book includes chapters on Physical Postures as Symbols of Prayer; Sunday: The Symbol of the Start of a New Age; Symbols In the Sacrament of Baptism; The Symbol of the Seal in Holy Chrismation; The Meaning of Nakedness in Baptism; The Meaning of Renunciation and Acceptance in Holy Baptism; Symbols in the Orthodox Paschal Celebration; Pascha: Breaking the Doors of Hades - Hinges and All; Symbols in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony; The Symbolism of Vestments Orthodoxy stands for truth in faith. Objective, absolute truth in today's secular society is nonexistent. Postmodernism has taught the world that truth is relative. Once God is dethroned, the individual manufactures and propagates one's own truth. This book examines objectively the moral relativism of our age with the multitude of clashing truths. Then draws upon countless resources beginning with the Scriptures, the Church Fathers and several intellectuals to show that Truth, with a capital T, does exist and is to be found in its fullness in Him who said, I am the Truth.
