Reading #1 Many people have become famous for running -- like Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C., or Stylianos Kyrides, who won the Boston Marathon in 1946 but only one man has become famous for walking: an American named Edward Payson Weston. He weighed only two kilos when he was born in the state of New York in 1839, and as a child he was small and weak. But when he was 15, a friend told him to eat vegetables and drink lots of milk, and to walk a mile every day. He did, and that was the beginning of it all. When he was 21, Weston took his first long walk: 733 kilometers, from Boston to Washington, D.C., to get a look at the new President, Abraham Lincoln. Newspapers wrote about his walk, and soon he had a job, which was to carry mail (on foot) to soldiers in the American Civil War (εµφύλιος πόλεµος). Next came a walk from Maine to Chicago. He had to walk 2,147 kilometers in 30 days to win some money. He only rested on Sundays, and he arrived in 29 days. Does walking keep you young? At age 68 Weston repeated his Maine to Chicago walk and broke his own record. Then, on his 70 th birthday, he started a walk across the whole of America, from New York to California, from sea to shining sea, in the words of a famous song. He walked through snow and wind, through dry valleys and across high mountains. Once the wind was so strong that he had to walk on hands and knees for four miles. His time: 104 days, seven hours. Then he walked back, in 76 days and 23 hours. That s 96 kilometers a day! Why so much faster? He had the wind helping him, he said, and he also took an easier and shorter way. Weston said that comfortable shoes were important to him. Perhaps the way he dressed also helped. His clothes were not like those that modern athletes wear. He dressed very well, with hat, coat, tie, and long pants, as if he was walking to the village church, not across the country. When he was in his ninetieth year, he was hit by a car in a city street. He had never liked cars. He used to say, Why ride when you can walk?
101. The words and that was the beginning of it all in line 7 refer to (αναφέρονται) the beginning A) of the first years of Weston s life. B) of what made Weston famous. C) of Weston s poor health as a child. D) of Weston s first walking race. 102. Which is not a reason Weston walked? A) to win some money B) to see President Lincoln C) to do his job D) to fight in a war 103. When Weston took his longest walk,,, A) the wind helped him. B) he won some money. C) he was only 21 years old. D) he crossed the U.S. 104. In line 18, why is the word walk in quotation marks (εισαγωγικά)? A) because the word is used in a famous song B) because Weston was famous for walking, not running C) because walking on your hands and knees isn t really walking D) because Weston never told anyone what he had done in the mountains 105. Why didn t Weston like cars? A) He didn t need one. B) He thought they were dangerous. C) He liked to dress up when he walked. D) He died when he was hit by a car.
Reading #2 One morning the people of the village of Tomi were woken by the noise of the animals they kept. Something was wrong, and the animals elephants, horses and pigs were trying to get away. The villagers knew that the animals understood the world better than they did, and so the people followed their animals out of the village and up into the mountains. A few hours later the tsunami (τσουνάµι) came and destroyed all the houses in Tomi. The villagers were sad that they had lost their homes, but of course they were happy that the animals had led them to a safe place. That night all the people slept in the mountains and the next day they started looking for food. In the middle of the day the people heard another strange noise, but this time it came from the sky. As they looked up into the clouds, they saw an airplane, and something was falling out of the plane. They whispered to each other, because at first they were afraid, but they slowly walked towards the boxes that had fallen from the plane. One of the bravest men touched a box, and then carefully opened it. He started shouting happily there was food in the box! Immediately the other villagers opened the other boxes and they found more food. All the people were very excited and started talking and laughing, but one man said very seriously, We must take some of this food to Tabasko, the village on the other side of the mountains. But how could they take heavy boxes of food across the high mountains? The older men talked for a few minutes and then they spoke to Ravi. Ravi was a good, brave boy and he was also the owner of Minnie, the largest elephant in the village. When the villagers told him they wanted him to carry food across the mountains to Tabasko, he immediately agreed. Minnie and Ravi left the village early the next day and followed a path through the trees up to the top of the mountain. Ravi saw many other animals on his journey, and heard many strange noises, but he was not afraid because he knew he was safe on Minnie. Once some monkeys jumped onto the food she was carrying and tried to steal some, but Ravi shouted at them and they quickly ran away. There was no path going down the other side of the mountain, so Minnie had to walk more slowly and carefully; sometimes she had to break branches so that they could continue. When they arrived at the village of Tabasko they found the houses there were also destroyed and it was very quiet. Ravi called out, but no one answered. Now it was dark, and he began to feel lonely, so he started to sing to make himself feel better. To his surprise, he heard another voice singing the same song, and then another and another. Looking up, he saw that in many of the trees there were children who had heard his song and had started singing too. The villagers had run away to hide when they heard Ravi and Minnie coming, because they were frightened. But when they heard all the children singing, they understood that Ravi and Minnie were not a danger. Ravi explained that he had brought food and the people were very happy. They all said that Ravi was a brave boy who had saved them and that Minnie was the best elephant on the island.
