THE SOURCE September 2013 Issue # 9-13 HOLY TRINIT RINITY GREE REEK ORTHODO RTHODOX CATHEDRA THEDRAL CAMP HILL ILL,, PA Welcome back from your summer travels. Let me start with a few important reminders before I write anything theological. We go back to regular hours on Sept. 8, i.e. Orthros 8:45 and Liturgy immediately after or approximately 10 a.m. Also, on Sept. 8, Sunday School will resume. On Sept. 7, at Jimmy and Helen Senos home at 205 Saint James Court, Mechanicsburg PA 17050, ( Phone: 717-697-5010) there will be a beginning of the year GOYA picnic from 4-7 p.m. At this meeting there will be an election of officers for the school year, an outline of activities presented, as well as food (it s a picnic after all) and some fun activities. We look forward to seeing you there! In September we have a number of major church events every year. 1 September is the Ecclesiastical New Year or Indiction, being an ancient calendar term related to the beginning of the new year (or period of years for calculating certain taxes in Roman ruled Egypt according to Orthodoxwikipedia.org). 8 September is the feast of the Birth of the Mother of God. The story of the miraculous conception of the Mother of God and her birth and early life are not drawn from scripture but from a book called the Protoevangellion of James. While it was never accepted as scripture officially, the document is quite old (possibly 2 nd Century or older), widely read and translated and was used as material for homilies by such luminaries at St. Gregory Palamas (1296-1359). To give you an idea of St. Gregory s qualifications for determining what is a good source or not, he is described in his Troparian as: O light of Orthodoxy, teacher of the Church, its confirmation, O ideal of monks and invincible champion of theologians, O wonder working Gregory, glory of Thessalonica and preacher of grace, always intercede before the Lord that our souls may be saved. So, some of our Protestant friends and other modernistic, academic theologians may have quibbles about this feast on grounds that it isn t scriptural, etc. As for me, I ll stand with St. Gregory. I admire the saint and his guidance so much that I named one of my boys after him.

THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2013 Page 2 14 September we celebrate the elevation of the Cross. St. Helen went to Jerusalem on pilgrimage and through a miracle involving some basil plants (basil = king in Greek) discovered the true cross of Christ. Shortly thereafter it was raised up (elevated) for the faithful to observe and venerate. Obviously, the Cross is the key symbol of Christianity. This is also the feast day of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline (Boston area), Massachusetts. Most of the clergy of Greek Orthodox Archdiocese are graduates of the school so it is a big day for our clergy. I did not graduate from there (I finished at St. Tikhon s Orthodox Theological Seminary), but I was a part time student at Holy Cross at one point in my life and I can assure you the feast is celebrated there with zeal. According to history/legend St. Constantine had a vision of The Cross in the sky before the battle of Milvian bridge in 312 which cleared the way to his becoming emperor. St. Constantine had his troops paint the cross or the XP on their shields and was victorious. Even though he went on to legalize Christianity and greatly support the church, he did not accept baptism until right before he died. The hymn for the feast probably served double duty as both a hymn for the feast and the national anthem of the empire. This is more obvious in the Greek than in the typical sanitized English translations. To see what I mean, the more literal, original Greek is in the brackets: Troparion (Tone 1) O Lord, save Thy people, And bless Thine inheritance. Grant victory to the Emperor [or "Thy people" or "the Orthodox Christians"] Over the barbarians, [or "their enemies" or their adversaries ] And by the power of Thy Cross Preserve Thy commonwealth. [or "estate" or "habitation"] Σώσον Κύριε τόν λαόν σου καί ευλόγησον τήν κληρονοµίαν σου, νίκας τοίς Βασιλεύσι κατά βαρβάρων δωρούµενος καί τό σόν φυλάττων διά τού Σταυρού σου πολίτευµα. Not that the potential secular/political use of hymn in antiquity takes anything away from it. It is one of a handful of hymns that I d argue would make a list for a greatest hits compilation for the church that everyone ought to memorize and be able to sing. Fr. Kosta and I both wish you a blessed beginning of the new church and school years! + Fr. Mark

THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2013 Page 5 Dear Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL The Fall season is fast approaching. Soon it will be time to enroll our children in Sunday School. I would like families to encourage their children to attend. This gives our children the opportunity to learn about their Lord and Savior and their Orthodox religion. It is also an opportunity for their spiritual growth. Sunday School starts on September 8, 2013. Another important date to remember is September 15 th, the Parish Assembly Meeting. This meeting gives all parishioners who are in good-standing, an opportunity to voice their opinions and ask questions. Your stewardship card was to be updated and turned in by August 31 so that you are eligible to vote and run for the upcoming Parish Council elections. Parents, please enroll your children in Greek School. This is a time when children can easily learn a language. They are not only learning to speak Greek, but they are learning about their heritage and their ancestry. I believe this is very important for the survival of their Greek heritage. Finally, parents please encourage your young men to participate as Altar Boys. Not only are they assisting the priest, but they are serving our Lord. In closing, I would like our Sunday School and Greek School enrollment increase. Please help us to encourage our children to be good stewards of the Lord. May the Lord bless and keep our Church in His Loving Care. Georgia Lucas Parish Council Member **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the annual Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Absentee ballot requests may be obtained from the church office.

This form must be submitted to the church office on or before the date of the Parish Assembly at which the 2013 Parish Council nominations are to be made. THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2013 Page 10 Our first meeting of the year will be on September 25, 2013. Our next book is Everyday Saints by Archimandrite Tikhon Shevkunov and Lowenfield. More than a million copies and several million electronic versions of this book have sold in less than a year. Everyday Saints is the English translation of the work that has soared at the top of the bestseller lists in Russia since its publication in late 2011. Winner of several national awards including "Book of the Year", its readership spans philosophical boundaries, from the devoutly religious to the vehemently atheist. Surpassing all competition many times over, it was voted the most popular book in Russia for 2012. Open this book and you will discover a wondrous, enigmatic, remarkably beautiful, yet absolutely real world. Peer into the mysterious Russian soul, where happiness reigns no matter what life may bring. Page upon page of thanks, praise, and testimonies to the life-changing effect of these bright, good-hearted, and poignant tales have flooded the Russian media. This book has been the cause of many sleepless but happy nights: "I couldn't put it down-was sorry when it ended" is the common reaction. The book is being translated into ten different languages. This English translation, Everyday Saints, is every bit as charming as the original. Everyday Saints is available for purchase from our church bookstore or from Amazon.com. New members are always welcome, please contact Ann Ariano at 564-6955 or ariano@paonline.com for more information.
