Betreuer This booklet was produced as part of the course Monument Preservation and Design: Strategies of Preservation by students of architecture in the Department of Monument Preservation at the Vienna University of Technology. The aim of the course was to propose an appropriate utilisation for the vacant monastery Convento de Monchique in Porto, while ensuring that the designs were compliant with the principles of monument preservation. second part was completed upon our return to Vienna, and it contains reports on the trip and introductions to each project. This section has been published in German and English, for the booklet will be sent to the owners of the Convento de Monchique and our Portuguese colleagues, who helped arrange the course. year. The fascinating city dates back centuries, and outstanding architectural monuments from each of these centuries remain standing today, such as the medieval cathedral, the baroque churches of Niccolo Nasoni, technical monuments of the 19th century like the Dom Luís I bridge and the buildings of the Pritzker Prize winners Álvaro Siza and Souto de Mouro. In 1996, Porto s homogenous and well-preserved old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Preserving so many monuments and the old town itself is a sig- almost none of the monuments are still serving their original purpose today. Abandoned and forgotten, they wait patiently for a wealthy investor who will bankroll a new future. Architect Anne Wermeille Mendonça, who has lived and worked in the abandoned Convento de Monchique. The monastery is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone just outside the former city walls. It was founded in the early 16th century and connected to an older palace already on the site. The monastery was used by nuns up until the early 19th century, at which point it was taken over by a local company called Menéres. Run by the family of the same name, Menéres produced wine and cork on site until they re- buildings has worsened ever since, some parts are still in use today. A couple of years ago, the city toyed with the idea of converting the monastery into a Pousada. The idea never took off. In January monastery the focus of our course, and providing the owners with ideas and concepts that could potentially bring life back to the his- With the area being used for such a variety of purposes over the years, many different buildings have been erected, and their condition varies greatly. The church and the main building have outstanding architectural qualities, while others are simply functional buildings. Working on site was perfect for our course, for it gave our study in a classroom alone. - confusing: bricked apertures, concrete walls in front of stone walls, a building stone engraved with a date, out-of-place decorative elements, and corridors with dead ends. After days of studying the structures and comparing plans and old images, the bigger picture was gradually revealed. could be evaluated by just its condition and architectural qualities. weighed up against potential losses regarding the integrity of the area. The history of the Convento de Monchique teaches visitors that buildings can retain their original qualities despite being used for with respect. Instead of completely re-inventing the site, they found new ideas and concepts, working with the variety of interesting places already available to them. In many cases, these areas need only be maintained, while others require repair, better access, and concepts to ensure future conservation. We found inspiration in the monastery s history as place of learning and, later, as a place of production following the takeover of the Menéres family in the 19th century. As a result, the students developed diverse concepts that all had one common interest: to breathe new life into the monastery in a way that is compatible with the needs of a historic monument. Planning changes to such a building without visiting the site, is certainly impossible. So it was a big advantage for us, to have the opportunity to brainstorm and to verify our ideas on site. - ings. It quickly became clear, that there was big potential but also very many undiscovered corners and old walls. We were told to listen to the building. To listen to it closely for a while to understand it and realize what it is made to be and what it wants to be. Certainly the biggest problem for us was, that it only spoke monastery, it became clear how to communicate with the buildings. and many confusing connections began slowly to make sense, by analyzing the different construction stages and signs of decay. In his own to understand the details and we started thinking about necessary interventions. During the week, those thoughts could be the gained knowledge. Our visit at the Faculty of Architecture of Alvaro Siza was very moving. It is a project that we gradually discovered and could not put tiated and highly embedded into the surrounding area. Apartments I Typ Wohnhaus 2 The visited building is in a narrow street of the UNESCO puffer zone of Porto, between a half ruin and a newly renovated building. you reach an open zone. Here is the staircase to connect the four apartments open air. In the upper levels the street facade couldn t be conserved and was replaced by a wooden grid. All four apartments are built the same way. In the entrance zone intimate sleeping zone. applied to one zone of the apartment. The view over the hill and the Douro river to Gaia is great. Arrebita! is a social project with the aim to act sustainable against the abandonment of Porto s inner city. The entrepreneurship is a panies can provide their products in a promotional effective way. Arrebita is an award-winning project because of it s special approach and effectiveness. At the moment the pilot project is under construction. We were able to visit the pilot project, which is situated in the clas- Arrebita-Team developed a master plan, which coordinates the processes, the participating companies, the design development and all other important factors. The group gathered at the Praca da Liberdade to start our day s designed by the famous architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. Its impressive structure is situated in an old quarry. We entered the building trough the players entrance in the garage and were greeted by places in the stadium. Sharing our tour guide with a group of young football players, we ascended the stands to the top. There we enjoyed the marvelous view over the landscape of Braga. mental, baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters. Located on a hill the church dominates the area. From this starting point, some of our group decided to descend the path with its stations of the cross. After picking them up at the bottom of the hill it was time for a lunch break in the beautiful city of Guimarães. After lunch in the narrow alleys of the historic city centre we got lost on the way to the meeting point. Thanks to Agnes all of us were able to continue the journey. Near Guimarães we visited the Pousada Santa Marinha.Through a restoration work by Fernando Távora, the - and its citizens. At the end of our tour on Saturday, we had the possibility to enjoy three of Álvaro Siza Vieira s masterpieces. We visited the house of his family in Matosinhos, which didn t stand out from outside. But it ncreasingly gained importance due to the additional information we and directly at the atlantic coast. You enter the building trough a most of the taller fellow students hit their heads. In one of the rooms you can also see a model for a Siza muse- At our last stop, we went to Sizas sea bath at the coast. Situated the beach. The sea basins - the most beautiful part of all - were still empty, but you could easily imagine them with many people on a hot summer day. We indulged ourselves in an ice-cream or a coffee while having a wonderful view and watching the romantic sunset. Finally, we visited the Boa Nova Teahouse and enjoyed the last warm sunrays of the day while sitting on the cliff and sum up the nice and (hard-)working week in Porto. Entwerfen Porto SS 2014 47

After a short night and a hurried breakfast we met on time and dutiful as always on Friday, April 11 th Convento de Madre Deus de Monchique. To present our conclusions and concept proposals, which we had gathered and designed inarrooms of the monastery which had become our second home The absence of our usual working mediums challenged our creativity and drawing skills when designing our presentations and posters. Some teams endured through the night partially even into the early ning challenged us quite a bit. As we welcomed Manuel Montenegro of Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto as a guest critic in addition to our supervisors Professor Nott Caviezel and Agnes Liebsch both the presentations and the subsequent discussions were conducted in English. The presentations being held in English once again demon- erally still lasting in the air, all the teams mastered the presentations to gather important feedback and critics for further alignment of the projects. The range of proposed new uses for the monastery was amazing, from historically acceptable project concepts like wine academies, shops, heritage conservation research facilities, gourmet markets and visitor centers with viewpoints but also less successful ideas such as the conversion to a swimming pool. After successfully completing our duty we enjoyed our well deserved lunch and had one last opportunity to listen to the old walls of the monastery. In the afternoon, one part of the group visited Casa de Musica by Rem Kolhaas. The other part of the group ended the day at the nearby city beach of Foz. Entwerfen Porto SS 2014 55
