HARRY DANALIS President Greek Orthodox Community of NSW This year the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales presents the 28th Greek Festival of Sydney. The continuing success of the Festival is a tribute to our community and the public which has over the years supported us both financially and by their presence at the various events held during the Festival Such success is also evidence of our Community s commitment to the maintenance of our language, culture and identity. The diverse range and quality of the events this year in all the areas of the arts is evidence of the rich local talent which exists and which seeks to take part in the Greek Festival of Sydney. This year we must pay a special tribute to the generous support of all our sponsors who in difficult economic times have stood by us. The Chair of the Festival Miss Ourania Karteris and the Festival Committee must be congratulated for tirelessly working to present to us the cultural feast which is the 28th Greek Festival of Sydney. I commend the program to all, and hope to see a wide participation of our community in all of the Festival events. NIA KARTERIS Chair Greek Festival of Sydney The 28th Greek Festival of Sydney salutes our cultural duality, the artistic energy of creation, the ingenious investigation of the world we live in and our standing as the most distant relatives of the Greek Diaspora family. The renowned Greek Fest, Darling Harbour where more than 200,000 people attended last year, will once again witness the Official Opening of the largest community festival. This year we will be joined by the North Eastern Aegean Islands Lesvos, Chios & Samos who bring with them their unique products, colours and flavours. Ten weeks of festival celebrations should be an emotional odyssey in any which way you choose. Look, listen, learn, dance, sing and socialise. The involvement of many young Australians of Greek origin is not purely coincidence. It is the result of hard work of many people. On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the State Government, Hellenic Government, Sponsors, Media, Artists and Volunteers for their efforts and support of our cultural campaign in Australia society. THE Honourable KEVIN RUDD MP Prime Minister of Australia Over the past three decades, the Greek Festival of Sydney has become one of the most popular and prestigious Greek- Australian cultural events in New South Wales. Each year, the Festival provides an opportunity to celebrate the continuing significant contribution to Australian society and culture made by the Greek- Australian community. I congratulate the organisers for their dedication and wish all those attending the 28th Greek Festival of Sydney 2010 an enjoyable and successful event.

EVENTS 3 9 APR DIGGERS AND GREEKS BY DR MARIA HILL Launched by The Honourable Bob Carr Reading Diggers and Greeks, I am reminded of the remarkable rapport between the Australian army and Greek citizens in World War II: Young Australian soldiers battling to protect Greek independence against the odds, ultimately failing but achieving an unprecedented friendship between a native people and an overseas army. Maria Hill tells a compelling story of the relationship that emerged between Australians and Greeks for the first time in the detail it deserves and with a scholar s command of the material, while not neglecting the Greek perspective but with a great feel for the emotions involved... EVENTS 10 16 APR THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE OF GREEK COMMUNITY THEATRE A Presentation by Eleni Tsefala For over sixty years, community theatre has offered entertainment and much more: it has served the community s need to define its identity, to transmit language and culture to future generations, and to combat racism and all kinds of prejudice. But what does community theatre mean today? How does it address the present needs of its audience? Who are its audience and what are their needs? What is the effect of using English? Eleni Tsefala has worked in theatre, cinema and television, and is writing a thesis on bilingual Greek theatre in Australia. Her talk will be followed by discussion. EVENTS 10 16 APR Homer Day Homer and Greek Religion Homer is not only the father of European literature but also the first important religious thinker of the West. In an era like ours when religious tension and fundamentalism are rife, Homer s stories and myths indicate both the origins of religious violence and redemption. In this series of lectures academics discuss the significance of the anthropomorphic gods of Homer and the ways that his poetry expressed the relations between humans and gods. They also discuss Homer s understanding of the afterlife and human destiny and his influence on the development of the religious pantheon of the ancient world. EVENTS 10 16 APR RIDING THE BLACK COCKATOO An evening with the author John Danalis John Danalis grew up with an Aboriginal skull nicknamed Mary on his family mantelpiece. He never questioned why it was there or who it belonged to, until 2005 when he was gripped by a compulsion to return it to its rightful owners. Thanks to Mary, John experienced a remarkable awakening and journeyed deep into the spiritual heart of Indigenous Australia. His book Riding the Black Cockatoo is the extraordinary account of the skull s return to country, and shows the transformative and healing power of true reconciliation. John Danalis will read extracts from his book and discuss it with the indigenous actor and storyteller, Dharug Yellamundie Richard Green. EVENTS 17 23 APR Palimpsest Book Launch Kathryn Koromilas first novel Palimpsest is a book about high ideals and low obsessions, truth and identity, immigration, nationality and race; about what we believe and what happens when belief degenerates into fanaticism. It s a story about a daughter and a father. Both are philosophers: the father an academic, the daughter an autodidact. When the story opens, the father has died and the daughter travels from Australia to Greece to bury him. Thus begins the unravelling of the death and life of her father, of what he believed and why he called himself the village philosopher. Academics Vrasidas Karalis and Edward Spence will join Kathryn for the launch of Palimpsest. It offers an interesting fusion of Balkan music encompassing different genres: traditional, gypsy and contemporary. Balcano crosses cultural and political boundaries, blending brass and violin with bouzouki and baglama to deliver a big sound with exciting dance rhythms. Helene Doukas vocals add a special flavour. Book early to avoid disappointment, as George s concert sold out in previous years and is sure to again! Café Carnivale website: www.cafecarnivale.com.au Greece Odyssey Launched by the Hon. John Hatzistergos This exhibition, with notable works of art by eight artists from Greece, is the result of Penelope Bistaros ten-year personal odyssey of discovery and adventure on the Greek islands and mainland. At the age of twenty-three, she embarked on a journey to the patrida (homeland) of her parents and ancestors, to learn about her Greek roots and heritage. The discovery of such a rich history and heritage enthralled and inspired her to begin collecting examples to bring to Australia for the enrichment and appreciation of all. This passion became a dream, and six years on it has become a reality.
