You just have to put on the shirt and skirt (or trousers) that you (63). Well, (64) you have to decide if you need a clean shirt or not. Secondly, you don t have to worry that what you have chosen is not the right thing to wear these days, and nobody (65) that they have more money than everybody else. When I was a girl, I (66) my own school uniform: that was because its color was green, and green was a color that I didn t like (67). In the winter we wore a white shirt and skirt (not more than two inches, or about five centimeters, (68) the knee), and in summer we could wear a dress that was green and white. This was better for me, because I chose dresses that had more white (69) green. It s better than going to the gym, I said to myself. Besides, while you are walking, you can also (78). I looked in the store windows until I saw something that I knew I had to have. Try (79) what it was. A pair of walking shoes? No. A new car? Nice try, but no. A fish dish, of course! Reading #1 Last month, on a cold, rainy, windy weekend, there was a competition held at our school, with over 300 students taking part. As I walked down the hallway, a visiting teacher came up to me and said, I was outside a few minutes ago, and I saw a cat on the roof of a small building. I spoke to the secretary in the building, and she told me the cat had been there for three weeks. It s raining, and the cat is getting wet, and it s crying. I don t think it can get down and it might be hungry. I was looking for the nurse for a student who had a stomach ache, and I was too busy to worry about a wet cat, but I remembered that we had a teacher at school who loved animals and who might be able to help. So I took our visitor downstairs, introduced him to Alexandra, and asked him to tell her about the cat. Later in the day, I saw Alexandra coming into the school with a wet coat on, so I asked her what she had done about the cat. Well, she replied, we found a ladder, and placed it next to the building, so the cat can climb down it if she wants to. I just hope that the children don t start climbing onto the roof. That made me a little worried, and I decided to go and see what was going on. Two children were trying to make the cat climb down the ladder, but she didn t seem to want to. We thought about what we should do next, and when we looked up again the cat had disappeared from the roof (we looked on both sides, too). The children looked at each other, surprised. Where did it go? they asked me when they saw me standing there, perhaps thinking that since I was a teacher, I would know everything. Well, I said, maybe she. How do you know it s a she? asked one of the children. Because she has three colors, orange, white and black. Only she-cats have more than two colors. It s a strange fact of nature. But where did she go? the smaller child asked. There must be a way for her to get under the roof, I replied. Let s go inside the building and check. Inside we saw a way up some old stairs into an area under the roof. We climbed up and looked in. It was dark. But since I am always prepared for everything, I took out a flashlight (which my English friends call a torch). Oh, look! shouted the smaller child, with eyes wide open. Lying on a pile of leaves was our cat, and next to her were five beautiful kittens. When I told Alexandra what we had found she said, Oh, the poor thing. She was crying because she needed some help. We must bring her some food. She has five kittens to feed. She went into the school dining-room and took a plate of chicken, which she brought to the cat, who ate it all very quickly.

B) she thought the cat would get hurt. C) she was afraid the children might use it themselves. D) she was afraid someone would walk under it. 103. Reading #2 Hernando de Soto of Spain was the first white man to see it, in 1542, but the name he gave to it was one he borrowed from the Indians. And the Ojibwe Indian word for "big river" is Mississippi. It is big. In some places it's over a mile wide (that's about one and a half kilometers). And it's almost 4,000 miles long. When it rains on the east side of the Rocky Mountains, the water flows east in streams and smaller rivers until it meets the Mississippi itself. The same thing happens on the other side of the river, only this time the water flows west from the Appalachian Mountains. All that water meets right in the middle of the country, making the Mississippi the largest river in America and one of the largest in the world. The rain from all or part of 31 American states and two parts of Canada goes there. Here are some more facts about the Mississippi. Its water isn't very clear. It's more like a brown soup (though the catfish like it). That's because it's carrying a lot of dirt: good, clean dirt that the river picks up as it goes along. When the river slows down at its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico (which is the sea), the dirt falls to the bottom of the river and, when there's enough of it, it makes new land, in the shape of the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet: a delta. That kind of land-building happens slowly, of course. Other changes happen fast. A town that was on one side of the river one day may be on the other side the next day! We know that happened in 1811 after an earthquake (σεισµός) that took place in the middle of the night. When the sun rose, the people who lived in the little town of Reverie in the state of Tennessee were surprised to find that the river had moved five miles to the east overnight, leaving them on the other side in the state of Arkansas! They didn't know whose laws to follow, Tennessee's or Arkansas'. Some things that were allowed in one state weren t allowed in the other. The great American writer Mark Twain was born in a town on the Mississippi River in 1835 and wrote several books about it. He and his friends enjoyed playing in boats and taking trips to some of the islands in the river. One day they decided to camp on one of the islands. They hadn't told their parents, however. So when they hadn't returned in three days, their parents thought the boys were probably lying at the bottom of the river. The boys learned that everyone was worried about them, and when they suddenly returned, everyone was so pleased to see them that no one shouted at them for not telling their parents where they were going. That's funny, isn't it? If you're an hour late, your parents get angry, but if you're three days late, they're so glad to see you that they cry. And if your parents are in America when they cry, their tears may become part of the Mississippi River.
