The voting that took place was in favour of continuing until November 2014. The votes were 71 in favour and 54 against. Στις 21 Σεπτεμβρίου θα πραγματοποιηθεί η προβολή του ιστορικού ντοκμαντέρ ΣΜΥΡΝΗ Η ΚΑΤΑΣΤΡΟΦΗ ΜΙΑ ΚΟΣΜΟΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΗΣ ΠΟΛΗΣ. Το ντοκυμαντέρ αποτελεί κινηματογραφικό αφιέρωμα σε μια πόλη που αποτέλεσε στις αρχές του προηγούμενου αιώνα το κέντρο του διαμετακομιστικού εμπορίου όλης της Νότιας Μεσογείου και η οποία δυστυχώς έπεσε θύμα ανώφελων εθνικών επάρσεων και πολιτικοθρησκευτικών αντεγκλήσεων.οι δημιουργοί του ντοκυμαντέρ μας χάρισαν στο πρόσφατο παρελθόν έγκριτα δείγματα του ταλέντου τους και της δουλειάς τους ( Το Ταξίδι - για τους Έλληνες μετανάστες στις ΗΠΑ, Ανταλλαγή πληθυσμών μεταξύ Ελλάδας Τουρκίας, 1922-1924 ). ΣΑΒΒΑΤΟ 21 ΣΕΠΤΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ 2013, 7:00 μ.μ. / SATURDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2013, 19:00 ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΗ ΑΙΘΟΥΣΑ / HELLENIC COMMUNITY HALL, 106 WESTERN SPRINGS Having carried out four years of research, the director and curator, Maria Iliou, and the historical consultant, Alexander Kitroeff present their work on Smyrna via previously unseen visual materials from archives from the US and Europe. The historical documentary and exhibition have special importance not only because they present these previously unknown images of Smyrna but also because Iliou and Kitroeff bring a new perspective; a perspective that keeps its distance from both an excessive nationalistic narration of the tale, and from more recent attempts to conceal the tragic events of the disaster, thereby distorting the truth. Even though the cosmopolitan city of Smyrna was destroyed, through this work it continues to live on in some way. It continues to be an idea that has to do with cosmopolitanism, with joie de vivre and with disaster. 90 years after the disaster, this documentary and the photographic exhibition pay tribute to the world which was lost in 1922 while at the same time paying tribute to the discipline of history. The documentary and photographic exhibition of the same name document the events using rare photographic and cinematographic materials selected from archives in the US and Europe. For the first time unknown images of Smyrna from private collections such as those of Pierre De Gigord and the archives of the Library of Congress, the universities of Princeton and Harvard, Near East Relief, the Imperial War Museum, Pathe, the Albert Kahn Foundation and other foundations in Greece and abroad are being presented. Celebration of the 28th of October This year s celebration will be held on Saturday the 2nd of November at our Hall after 5.00 pm. The event will be organised by the school and our teacher Elias will select a group of young children that attend Greek classes to say some patriotic songs and poems that are relevant with our OXI day. The format of the day will be one of a fundraising event. Some of our members have volunteered to cook for the guests and as so there will be an entrance fee of $20 for the adults and children under 10 years old will attend for free. (All vounteers welcome, please contact Mr Kritos). There will also be a bar for drinks purchase and all proceedings from the evening will go to our community. Obviously after the formal part and the always exceptional food there will be music and dancing until late. Εορτασμός της 28ης Οκτωβρίου Η φετινή γιορτή θα πραγματοποιηθεί το Σάββατο 2 Νοεμβρίου στην αίθουσά μας μετά τις 5.00 μμ. Η εκδήλωση θα διοργανωθεί από το σχολείο και ο δάσκαλος μας Ηλίας θα επιλέξει μια ομάδα παιδιών που παρακολουθούν μαθήματα ελληνικής γλώσσας για να απαγγείλουν μερικά πατριωτικά τραγούδια και ποιήματα τα οποία έχουν σχέση με την επέτειο του «ΟΧΙ». Μερικά από τα ακούραστα μέλη της κοινότητας προσφέρθηκαν να μαγειρέψουν για να μπορέσουμε να κάνουμε την επέτειο μια αφορμή για να ενισχύσουμε και τα οικονομικά της κοινότητας. There is a rich history behind the icons of our Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Auckland, and in this second of a two-part article, Fr Paul Patitsas introduces a number of the icons and their origins. The Icons of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Auckland [Part 2] Three, possibly four icons of the Sacred Naos of Holy Trinity are the work of the family of iconographers, Anikitos (+1995) and Sozon Giannoudis, who later went on to teach art at the prestigious Athens School of Fine Arts. Anikitos was mentored by none other than the renowned Byzantine Iconographer and Iconologist Photios Kontoglou, who gifted to him a copy of his famous book in two volumes, Ekfrasis. Anikitos hailed from Lemesos, Cyprus and under the tutelage of Photios Kontoglou moved away from Renaissance style, Italianate icons, to icons painted according to the Byzantine rhythmos. They produced these icons in 1981 shortly after the church was purchased by the Greek Orthodox Community. These icons are: the icon of the Mystical Supper which is positioned above the Beautiful Gate in the iconostasis, the icon of the Aghion Mandilion (the Holy Napkin) which is on the Western wall of the nave, and the icon of the Panaghia Odhigitria (Panaghia Directress) which is positioned on the Southern wall of the nave above the doors that pass to the office and hospitality area of the church complex. One additional icon that may also be the work of either Sozon or Anikitos Giannoudis is the icon of the Stavromeno or Christ Crucified. All four works are works of exceptional skill and artistry. The composition of the Mystical Supper has a unique layout as it is painted into a perfect semi-circle. Christ is positioned at the top of the icon, seated at a semi-circular table with His disciples. He is depicted slightly larger than the disciples and he alone has a photostefano (halo). True to the Byzantine tradition only Judas is depicted in profile, his arm and torso stretched out over the table, reaching to dip his bread in the dish. In Byzantine symbolism when a face is depicted in profile it indicates some distortion of the inner person. Two other icons also appear to be the work of the Stavrovouni Monastery in Cyprus: the icon of St. John the Baptist and the icon of the Annunciation which are positioned on the Western and Eastern walls of the nave respectively. These icons as the two Archangel icons are completed in the Italianate style popular in the 1940's. Both icons are evocative, the one of St. John clearly expressing his humility and the one of the Annunciation rendering the humility and awe of both the Virgin Maria and the Archangel Gabriel. These two icons were commissioned by Ioannis and Eutyhia Kathistidos. On the iconostasis are several additional icons, also in the Byzantine rhythmos, all are mounted paper reprints, the festal icons depicting the twelve great feasts are the work of St. Theophanes (Strylitsas) the Cretan and date to1546, the icons of the Apostles are of unknown authorship. Two other icons that feature prominently in the Sacred Naos of Holy Trinity, Auckland, are the large framed icons adjacent to the iconostasis and flanking it both on the right and on the left. They are the icons of St. Nektarios and of St. George. Both are the work of the Iconographer and Parish Priest Rev. Fr. George D. Politakis of Morwell, Victoria, Australia. The icon of St. George was completed in April of 1974, and the icon of St. Nektarios in August of the same year. These are not the work of a skilled artist, however, the icon of St. Nektarios specifically renders the saint approachable and with a penetrating gaze. It is a nearly life size depiction of the beloved Saint Nektarios who was about five foot tall. On the proskynitarion at the front of the church and before the steps which lead up to the iconostasis and the iero, on the left hand side of the Beautiful Gate there is an icon of the Panaghia Portaitissa. The images itself is covered with an artistically executed riza done in silver. It is also rendered according to the Byzantine rhythmos. The dating for the icon has not been determined with any accuracy but it seems to be several hundred years old. This icon was donated to the church by Maria Finnigan. The icon had been a part of many years. One final icon worthy of special note is the icon of the Panaghia that adorns the proskynitarion of our beloved Holy Trinity Church. It is titled Rodon to Amaranton ( Unfading Rose ), a name which derives from a stanzas of the Akathist Hymn authored by St. Romanos the Melodist in the early sixth century and who is known as the Pindar of rhythmic poetry. In his hymn, St. Romanos refers to the Virgin Maria with these words: Hail to you who alone blossomed forth the Unfading Rose. The Virgin Mother Maria is thus depicted holding in her right hand a pink rose blossom while in her left she cradles a large rose bloom upon which stands the child Jesus Christ, dressed in royal robes. This icon though seemingly not completed by a skilled artist's hand with its large eyed, folk rendering of the Theotokos and the Divine Son, depicts the Lord and His Mother with great tenderness and beauty. 4
