PTA VASILOPITES FUNDRAISER The PTA extends a huge thank you to Evangelia Bilalis, Mathoula Bilalis, Lemonia Chouzouri, and Eleftherios Ioannidis for making the delicious vasilopites and to the parishioners of Holy Trinity Cathedral for supporting the fundraiser. It was a sell out! YOUTH HYMNOLOGY PROGRAM During December Sunday School students will learn the Communion Hymn "Ainete ton Kyrion Praise the Lord." This is chanted while the priest says inaudible prayers and prepares the Holy Communion. Immediately after Communion all students will proceed to the gymnasium for this instruction and then go to their classrooms. Director Viki Moustoukas and the Sunday School staff are very happy that many parents and grandparents also attend this brief class. They wish to thank them for their support, sitting with the children and helping the young choir members follow along. Please contact Viki Moustoukas (vmoustouka@aol.com) with any questions about this program. AHEPA All AHEPANS are asked to remit their 2013 dues as soon as possible. Payments, which must be received no later than December 31, 2013, may be mailed to the Cathedral office or to Manoli Ioannidis at 4725 Toulouse Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Your immediate attention is greatly appreciated. ANGEL TREE All Angel Tree gifts are due back today, December 15. Diana Moustoukas Peterson and Viki Moustoukas will be available in the Coffee Room after services to assist. PHILOPTOCHOS SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Senior citizens enjoyed a festive Christmas luncheon at Austin s Restaurant last week. Our gracious hosts were Anthoula and Paris Malachias and Irene Papazis. We wish to thank them for making this annual event so very remarkable. Seniors enjoyed a delicious four course meal followed by coffee and entertainment. The tables were decorated with gleaming Christmas tree favors and set amid the glow of the restaurant s Christmas lights and holiday wall décor. This year as Cathy Vial read the story of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, she gave prizes to the seniors, who held the card with the winning word. It was an enjoyable afternoon for everyone. VASILOPTITA SUNDAY In the fourth century Saint Basil the Great established various philanthropic institutions and distributed money to the poor in a discreet manner by placing gold coins in sweetened bread. The recipients cutting the bread were surprised to find the gold coin, which provided them with material sustenance. These special loaves became known as the bread of Saint Basil, or Vasilopita. This year, the beautiful tradition of our Orthodox faith, the Cutting of the Vasilopita, will be held following church services on January 5, 2014. All proceeds from this annual celebration are sent to the Academy of Saint Basil, a home away from home for Orthodox young people, who come from broken homes or are victims of poverty, abuse, or abandonment. Thanking you in advance for your consideration, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. MEMBERSHIP The New Year also means the Philoptochos Membership drive begins. We encourage membership renewals and gladly welcome new members throughout the year. Our next meeting is Saturday, January 4, at 10:30 am in the Coffee Room. If you are interested in joining, please contact Membership Chairperson Cathy Vial. PILGRIMAGE TO ROME AND CONSTANTINOPLE Fathers Buddy Noel and Maximos Pafilis will direct a special ecumenical pilgrimage to Rome and Constantinople September 8-18, 2014. The trip will include the Vatican museums and Hagia Sophia. Detailed flyers are available in the Cathedral office.

HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL EPIPHANY CROSS SWIM AND 150TH ANNIVERSARY KICK OFF Sunday, January 12, 2014 The Holy Trinity Family is invited to observe the Epiphany Cross Swim along Bayou St. John, directly in front of the Cathedral, following Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 12, 2014, and afterward to attend the 150th Anniversary Kick Off Celebratory Luncheon in the Hellenic Cultural Center. The traditional Epiphany Cross Swim commemorates the Baptism and the Holy Theophany of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The fortunate individual, who recovers the Cross, will receive a gift from the community and will be recognized at the luncheon. Male members of Holy Trinity Cathedral, who are age 16 or older and who desire to be a part of this meaningful Orthodox tradition, are asked to complete a Swim for the Cross Application Form, as well as a Permission Form. Both documents, which are available in the Cathedral office, MUST be completed and returned to the office no later than Sunday, January 5, 2014. Also, to assure the success of this event, the 150th Anniversary Committee is asking for assistance in covering the costs associated with the endeavor. Sponsorship Forms are enclosed. Please consider a sponsorship level in support of the Epiphany festivities. For further information on all Epiphany related questions, contact the Cathedral office, Nick Chronis, Costa Vennis, or Barbara Wolf. ARCHIVES CHRISTMAS MUSEUM STORE Don't forget to visit the Christmas Boutique in the foyer today. The Archives Committee has unique historic Christmas gifts for sell, which include note cards with images of our venerated icons, reproductions of the original 1872 icons with authentication certificates (examples at left), 2001 Consecration keepsake ornaments, and other archives items. All proceeds go directly to the conservation and preservation of our collection. Maggie Maag will be happy to assist you. It is by offering our blessings back to God that He will be able to continue His forgiving, healing, liberating, empowering, transfiguring, loving ministry through the Church. For God, Infinite though He be, has chosen to work through us, through our gifts, to continue His saving work in the world today. - Father Anthony M. Coniaris The 2014 Stewardship packets will be mailed to your homes soon. To update Cathedral records, each steward, individual or family, is asked to complete a 2014 Commitment Card and return it to the office. Moreover, stewards are strongly encouraged to submit the completed forms by January 24, 2014, to assist with upcoming budget planning. Your cooperation on this matter is greatly appreciated. PLEASE NOTE: The Cathedral staff asks that all parishioners refrain from watering plants in the church and the Hellenic Cultural Center. A schedule has been established for this task.

POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS To purchase a Christmas poinsettia in honor or in memory of someone, please fill out a form and return it to the Cathedral office no later than tomorrow, Monday, December 16, 2013. Cost is $10 each. As in the past these plants decorate the solea during the Nativity season. Holy Trinity Cathedral Greek Orthodox Community of New Orleans 1200 ROBERT E. Καὶ παραγενόμενος ὁ δοῦλος ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα. EPISTLE 2 Timothy 1:8-18 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me? TIMOTHY, my son, do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, and among them Phygelos and Hermogenes. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphoros, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me - may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesos. THE GOSPEL Luke 14:16-24, Matthew 22:14 The Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"
