And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.".
Wonderworker and Unmercenary Cyrus & John 31 January Saint Cyrus was a noted physician in the city of Alexandria, where he had been born and raised. He was a Christian and he treated the sick without charge, not only curing their bodily afflictions, but also healing their spiritual infirmities. He would say, Whoever wishes to avoid being ill should refrain from sin, for sin is often the cause of bodily illness. Preaching the Gospel, the holy physician converted many pagans to Christ. During the persecution by Diocletian (284-305), St Cyrus withdrew into Arabia, where he became a monk. He continued to heal people by his prayer, having received from God the gift to heal every sickness. In the city of Edessa at this time lived the soldier John, a pious Christian. When the persecution started, he went to Jerusalem and there he heard about St Cyrus. He began to search for him, going first to Alexandria and then to Arabia. When St John finally found St Cyrus, he remained with him and became his faithful follower. They learned of the arrest of the Christian woman Athanasia and her three young daughters. Theoctiste was fifteen; Theodota, was thirteen; and Eudoxia, was eleven. Sts Cyrus and John hastened to the prison to help them. Learning of this, the ruler of the city arrested Sts Cyrus and John, and seeing their steadfast and fearless confession of faith in Christ, he brought Athanasia and her daughters to witness their torture. The tyrant did not refrain from any form of torture against the holy martyrs. The women were not frightened by the sufferings of Sts Cyrus and John, but courageously continued to confess Christ. They were flogged and then beheaded, receiving their crowns of martyrdom. At the same place they executed the Holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John. Christians buried their bodies in the church of the holy Evangelist Mark. In the fifth century the relics of Sts Cyrus and John were transferred from Canopis to Manuphin. Later on their relics were transferred to Rome, and from there to Munchen (Munich) (another account is located under June 28). Sts Cyrus and John are invoked by those who have difficulty in sleeping.

Οἱ Ἅγιοι Κύρος καὶ Ἰωάννης οἱ Ἀνάργυροι Οἱ Ἅγιοι Μάρτυρες Κύρος καὶ Ἰωάννης ἄθ ησαν κατὰ τὴν ἐποχὴ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανοῦ (284 305 μ.χ.). Ὁ Ἅγιος Κύρος καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴν Ἀ εξάνδρεια, ἐνῶ ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰωάννης καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴν Ἔδεσσα τῆς Μεσοποταμίας. Ὅταν ξέσπασε ὁ διωγμὸς τοῦ Διοκλητιανοῦ, ὁ Ἅγιος Κύρος πῆγε σὲ ἕνα παραθαλάσσιο τόπο τῆς Ἀραβίας καί, ἀφοῦ περιεβ ήθηκε τὸ μοναχικὸ σχῆμα, κατοίκησε στὸν τόπο αὐτό. Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰωάννης πῆγε στὰ Ἱεροσό υμα καὶ ἐκεῖ ἄκουσε γιὰ τὰ θαύματα ποὺ ἐπιτελοῦσε ὁ Ἅγιος Κύρος. Στὴν συνέχεια μετέβη στὴν Ἀ εξάνδρεια. Ἀπὸ ἐκεῖ, ἀφοῦ ἀπὸ διάφορες φῆμες ἔμαθε ποῦ διέμενε ὁ Ἅγιος Κύρος, πῆγε καὶ τὸν βρῆκε καὶ ἔμεινε μαζί του. Τὰ θαύματα τῶν Ἁγίων Ἀναργύρων συνέγραψε ὁ Ἅγιος Σωφρόνιος, Πατριάρχης Ἱεροσολύμων ( 11 Μαρτίου), διότι οἱ Ἅγιοι θεράπευσαν τὰ μάτια του. Κατὰ τὴν περίοδο τοῦ διωγμοῦ συνελήφθη καὶ ἡ Ἁγία Ἀθανασία, ποὺ ἦταν χήρα, καθὼς ἐπίσης καὶ οἱ τρεῖς θυγατέρες της Θεοδότη, Θεοκτίστη καὶ Εὐδοξία. Ἡ εἴδηση τάραξε τὸν Κύρο καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννη. Ἔτσι οἱ Ἅγιοι, ἐπειδὴ φοβήθηκαν μήπως αὐτὲς δειλιάσουν ἀπὸ τὴν σκληρότητα τῶν βασανιστηρίων, ἐξαιτίας τῆς ἀδυναμίας τῆς φύσεως τῆς γυναίκας, ἔσπευσαν κοντά τους καὶ ἔδιναν σὲ αὐτὲς θάρρος, ἐνῶ παρά ηλα προετοιμάζονταν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι γιὰ τὸ μαρτύριο. Καὶ πράγματι, συνελήφθησαν καὶ αὐτοὶ καὶ ὁδηγήθηκαν στὸν ἡγεμόνα. Ἐκεῖ διακήρυξαν μὲ παρρησία καὶ θάρρος τὴν πίστη τους στὸν Θεό. Μάταια ὁ ἡγεμόνας ζητοῦσε νὰ κάμψει τὴν ἀνδρεία τῆς μητέρας, δείχνοντας σὲ αὐτὴ τὶς θυγατέρες της καὶ ἐπιρρίπτοντάς της τὴν ἐνοχή. Ἐκείνη, ἀφοῦ στράφηκε πρὸς τὶς θυγατέρες 31 Ιανουαρίου της, τὶς ἐνίσχυε λέγουσα ὅτι ἡ σωματικὴ ὡραιότητα εἶναι πρόσκαιρη, ἐνῶ στὴν αἰωνιότητα διατηρεῖται ἡ ὀμορφιὰ τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀθάνατη. Αὐτὲς δὲ ἔ εγαν πρὸς τὴν μητέρα τους ὅτι αἰσθάνονταν μεγά η χαρά, ἐπειδὴ ἔμε ε νὰ φύγουν ἀπὸ τὸν μάταιο αὐτὸ κόσμο μαζί της γιὰ τὴν ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ νὰ μὴν χωρισθοῦν ποτὲ ἀπὸ κοντά της. Ὁ ἡγεμόνας ἐξαγριώθηκε καὶ διέταξε νὰ τοὺς ὑποβά ουν σὲ πο ὰ καὶ σκληρὰ βασανιστήρια. Μετὰ ἀπὸ τὰ βασανιστήρια ἀποκεφά ισαν διὰ ξίφους τὸν Ἅγιο Κύρο καὶ τὸν Ἅγιο Ἰωάννη, τὸ ἔτος 292 μ.χ.. Ἔτσι μαρτύρησαν καὶ ἡ Ἁγία Ἀθανασία μὲ τὶς τρεῖς θυγατέρες της. Τὸν βίο καὶ τὸ μαρτύριο αὐτῶν ἔγραψε ὁ Σωφρόνιος ὁ Σοφιστής. Ἡ Σύναξη αὐτῶν ἐτελεῖτο στὸ Μαρτύριο ποὺ εἶχε ἀνεγερθεῖ πρὸς τιμήν τους καὶ βρίσκεται στὴν περιοχὴ Φωρακίου. Ἀπολυτίκιον. Ἦχος δ. Ὡς Ἀθ οφόροι εὐκλεεῖς τοῦ Σωτῆρος, καὶ ἰατῆρες τῶν ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων, Ἀνάργυροι ἐκλάμπετε ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ, νόσων μὲν ἰώμενοι, ἀνωδύνως τὰ βάρη, χάριν δὲ πορίζοντες, τοῖς βοῶσιν ἀπαύστως χαίρετε κρῆναι θείων δωρεῶν, Κῦρε θεόφρον, καὶ Ἰωάννη ἔνδοξε. FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: On Tuesday, February 2, we will commemorate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Ypapanti) at the Chapel in Brookline. Orthros will start at 8:00 am and Divine Liturgy at 9:00 am. Please note the earlier times. GODPARENT SUNDAY: On Sunday, February 7 we will honor the godparents of our Cathedral with Godparent Sunday. Godparents will sit with their godchildren in church during the Divine Liturgy and then will attend Sunday school class with their godchildren. If a godparent cannot attend, yiayiades, papoudes, aunts, uncles or cousins are invited to attend! APOKREATIKO LUNCHEON: Join us on Sunday, March 6, 2016 for an Apokreatiko (Meatfare) Luncheon immediately following the Liturgy in the Davis Hall. Tickets for adults are $25 and $5 for kids under 12. The menu includes Mezedakia, Lamb Shanks and Chicken Tenders for the kids. Music by D.J. Ανακοινώσεις ΚΑΛΩΣOΡΙΣΜΑ: Για όσους επισκέπτονται την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία για πρώτη φορά, θα πρέπει να γνωρίζουν ότι η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι το σύμβολο της ενότητας της πίστεως, το οποίο προσφέρεται μόνο σε όσους έχουν βαπτιστεί ή χριστεί Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί. Όλοι οι παρευρισκόμενοι ωστόσο, είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι να λάβουν το Αντίδωρο (ή ευλογημένο ψωμί), το οποίο διανέμεται μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας. Ο Όρθρος θα αρχίσει στις 8:00 πμ και θα ακολουθήσει η Θεία Λειτουργία στις 9:00 πμ. ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΑΝΑΔΟΧΩΝ: Την Κυριακή, 7 Φεβρουαρίου θα τιμήσουμε τους Αναδόχους (Νονούς) του Καθεδρικού Ναού. Οι Ανάδοχοι θα καθίσουν μαζί με τα βαφτιστήρια τους στην εκκλησία κατά τη διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας και στη συνέχεια, θα παρακολουθήσουν μαζί τους το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Εάν κάποιος από τους αναδόχους δεν μπορεί να παραστεί, τότε ένας από τις γιαγιάδες, παπούδες, θείες, θείους, ή εξαδέλφια καλείται να συμμετάσχει.
