Demetrios Kounavis Parish Priest Sunday, November 6, 2016 7th Sunday of Luke John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria - November 12 Saint John was born in 555 on the island of Cyprus in the city of Amathus; his father, Epiphanius, was a ruler of Cyprus. The Saint was consecrated Archbishop of Alexandria in 608. A man of exemplary uprightness, in his zeal for Orthodoxy he strove mightily to fight the many heresies among the Christians in Egypt; but above all, he was famous for his singular generosity, humility, and sympathy towards all, especially the poor. His mercy was so great that the report of it reached the Persian invaders of Jerusalem, who desired to see him because of it. Saint John reposed in 619, at the age of sixty-four. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
The Christian Calling - Lowliness, Meekness and Longsuffering By St. Nikolai Velimirovich " that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering" (Ephesians 4:1-2). Be not proud, be not angry, be not fainthearted; for these are unworthy of a Christian calling. This calling is so elevated and wonderful that it is difficult for a man to safeguard himself from pride; yet it is difficult to keep oneself above faintheartedness when dangers and losses occur. Against these three unhealthy states, the Apostle emphasizes three healthy states: against pride, lowliness; against anger, meekness; against faint-heartedness, longsuffering. It must be said that these three virtues - lowliness, meekness and longsuffering - do not express in full measure the loftiness of the Christian calling. But then, nothing in this world can fully express the height of the Christian calling. The preciousness and richness of this calling cannot be seen here on earth: it is like a closed chest that a man carries through this world, but only opens it and avails himself of its riches in the other world. Only someone who could raise himself to the highest heavens and see Christ the Lord in glory with the angels and the saints could assess the loftiness of the Christian calling; for there is the victorious assembly of all God's chosen ones from earth who were made worthy of this exceedingly high honor. Αν ζητούμε κάτι από τον Θεό, χωρίς να θυσιάζουμε και κάτι, δεν έχει αξία «Εγώ δε αγαπώ το παιδί μου; Από τον πέμπτο όροφο πετιέμαι κάτω για την αγάπη του παιδιού μου», μου λέει. Αν ζητούμε κάτι από τον Θεό, χωρίς να θυσιάζουμε και κάτι, δεν έχει αξία. Αν κάθομαι και λέω: «Θεέ μου, Σε παρακαλώ, κάνε καλά τον τάδε άρρωστο», χωρίς να κάνω κάποια θυσία, είναι σαν να λέω απλώς καλά λόγια. Ο Χριστός να δη την αγάπη μου, την θυσία μου, και τότε θα εκπληρώσει το αίτημά μου, αν βέβαια αυτό είναι για το πνευματικό καλό του άλλου. Γι αυτό, όταν οι άνθρωποι σας ζητούν να προσευχηθείτε για κάποιον άρρωστο, να τους λέτε να προσευχηθούν και αυτοί ή τουλάχιστον να αγωνισθούν να κόψουν τα κουσούρια τους. Μερικοί άνθρωποι έρχονται και μου λένε: «Κάνε με καλά έμαθα ότι μπορείς να με βοηθήσεις». Θέλουν όμως να βοηθηθούν, χωρίς οι ίδιοι να καταβάλλουν καθόλου προσπάθεια. Λες λ.χ. στον άλλον: «μην τρως γλυκά, κάνε αυτήν την θυσία, για να σε βοηθήσει ο Θεός», και σου λένε: «Γιατί; Δεν μπορεί να με κάνη καλά ο Θεός;». Δεν κάνουν μια θυσία για τον εαυτό τους, πόσο μάλλον να θυσιασθούν για τον άλλον. Άλλος δεν τρώει γλυκά, για να βοηθήσει ο Χριστός όσους πάσχουν από ζάχαρο, ή δεν κοιμάται, για να δώσει λίγο ύπνο ο Χριστός σ αυτούς που πάσχουν από αϋπνίες. Έτσι συγγενεύει ο άνθρωπος με τον Θεό. Τότε ο Θεός δίνει την Χάρη Του. Εγώ, όταν μου λέει κάποιος πως δεν μπορεί να προσευχηθεί για κάποιον δικό του που είναι άρρωστος, του λέω να κάνη και αυτός μια θυσία για τον άρρωστο. Συνήθως του λέω να κάνη κάτι που θα είναι καλό και για την δική του υγεία. Ήρθε κάποτε από την Γερμανία στο Καλύβι ένας πατέρας, που το κοριτσάκι του είχε αρχίσει να παραλύη. Οι γιατροί το είχαν ξεγράψει. Ήταν ο καημένος τελείως απελπισμένος. «Κάνε κι εσύ μια θυσία, του είπα, για την υγεία του παιδιού σου. Να κάνης μετάνοιες, δεν μπορείς να προσευχηθείς, δεν μπορείς, εντάξει. Πόσα τσιγάρα καπνίζεις την ημέρα;». «Τεσσεράμισι κουτιά», μου λέει. «Να καπνίζεις ένα κουτί, του λέω, και τα χρήματα που θα έδινες για τα υπόλοιπα να τα δίνης σε κανέναν φτωχό». «Να γίνει, Πάτερ, καλά το παιδί, μου λέει, και εγώ θα το κόψω το τσιγάρο». «Ε, τότε δεν θα έχει αξία τώρα πρέπει να το κόψης πέταξε το τσιγάρο, του λέω. Δεν αγαπάς το παιδί σου;». «Εγώ δεν σου λέω να πεταχτής από τον πέμπτο όροφο κάτω, θα αφήσεις το παιδί σου στον δρόμο κι εσύ θα χάσης την ψυχή σου. Εγώ σου λέω να κάνης κάτι εύκολο. Να, πέταξε τώρα τα τσιγάρα!». Με κανέναν τρόπο δεν ήθελε να τα πετάξει. Και τελικά έφυγε έτσι και έκλαιγε! Πως να βοηθηθεί αυτός ο άνθρωπος; Ενώ όσοι ακούν βοηθιούνται. Μια άλλη μέρα ήρθε ένας που αγκομαχούσε από την πεζοπορία. Κατάλαβα ότι κάπνιζε πολύ και του είπα: «Βρε ευλογημένε, γιατί καπνίζεις τόσο; Θα πάθεις κακό». Μόλις ξελαχάνιασε και μπόρεσε να μιλήσει, μου είπε: «Η γυναίκα μου είναι πολύ άρρωστη και κινδυνεύει να πεθάνει. Σε παρακαλώ, κάνε μια προσευχή να γίνει κανένα θαύμα. Οι γιατροί σήκωσαν τα χέρια». «Την αγαπάς την γυναίκα σου;», τον ρωτάω. «Την αγαπώ», μου λέει. «Τότε γιατί δεν κάνεις κι εσύ κάτι, για να την βοηθήσεις; Αυτή έκανε ό,τι μπορούσε, οι γιατροί έκαναν ό,τι μπορούσαν, και τώρα έρχεσαι εδώ, για να μου πεις να κάνω κάτι και εγώ, να προσευχηθώ, για να βοηθήσει ο Θεός. Εσύ όμως τι έκανες, για να βοηθηθεί η γυναίκα σου;». «Τι μπορώ να κάνω εγώ, Γέροντα;», με ρωτάει. «Αν σταματήσεις το κάπνισμα, του λέω, η γυναίκα σου θα γίνει καλά». Σκέφθηκα ότι, αν ο Θεός δη ότι δεν συμφέρει πνευματικά στην γυναίκα του να γίνει καλά, τουλάχιστον θα γλιτώσει αυτός από το κακό που κάνει το τσιγάρο. Ύστερα από έναν μήνα ήρθε χαρούμενος να με ευχαριστήσει. «Γέροντα, σταμάτησα το κάπνισμα, μου είπε, και η γυναίκα μου έγινε καλά». Μετά από ένα διάστημα ξαναήρθε αναστατωμένος να μου πει ότι ξανάρχισε κρυφά να καπνίζει και η γυναίκα του έπεσε πάλι βαριά άρρωστη. «Το φάρμακο τώρα το ξέρεις, του είπα. Κόψε το τσιγάρο». This means that only baptized, chrismated and observant Orthodox faithful receive communion in our churches. At the same time, we warmly welcome all non-orthodox to join us in prayer and celebration, and humbly offer to all present the Antidoro bread of fellowship at the end of the service. We offer this important symbol instead of the Gifts, in the words of the Apostle Paul, Till we all come to the unity of the Faith (Eph. 4.13).
