Greece tries to make (62) a nice place to visit, and tries to show people in other countries what a wonderful place it is so that they will spend some time and money! here. In countries like Britain, Sweden, France, and (63), Greece advertises on TV. People in those places see a country (64) the sun is always shining and people with blond (65) and white skin are having a good time at the beach or at museums. In these TV advertisements, people are eating Greek food in beautiful tavernas by the sea and are 66) to the kind of music that you know so well, but which is something different to them. Sometimes a couple is shown, sometimes a family. If it is a couple, you can be sure that (67) ; if it is a family, everybody is having a great time, there are never any fights (68) the children, and the mother is always smiling. Gap-filling #2 People of all ages collect different objects, including stamps, stickers, matchboxes and even erasers. You probably have a collection or two yourself. Why (71) so much money and time on such hobbies? There are (72) answers to this question. In the first place, we like to be able to show our friends and guests our (73) and sometimes colorful collections. Here the problem is that those people that should admire what we show them finally do not (74) much attention and we are (75). Why don t they share our feelings for our wonderful collection of last summer s seashells? A second reason is that we want to feel that we own a collection that is better and bigger (76) everybody else's. Again we are unhappy realizing, usually too late, that the perfect, complete collection is only a dream. A third reason is that we may believe that some or all of the objects we have are or, one day, will be valuable and make us (77). (78), the truth is that those with collections that are worth a lot of money lock them up in boxes where nobody can admire them because they are always afraid (79) thieves! Unfortunately, it looks as if the objects we collect with such enthusiasm are finally forgotten and gather dust on shelves or hide in drawers. Reading #1 5 10 15 20 25 30 Can animals talk? Of course they can. You just don t understand their language, or rather languages. Like people, they don t all speak the same language.there s Dog, Cat, Elephant, and many others. Birds have many different languages. They speak as many languages as humans do (and humans have at least 3,000). For example, a hen in the farmyard doesn t speak the same language as the songbird in the garden. Parrots (παπαγάλοι) talk, and a few of them even speak English. A few years ago, one of them actually took the Anatolia Entrance Exam. Not really: that was a joke. You ve probably heard a parrot speak English, at least in the movies. They don t always learn very good English, however, from the sea captains and pirates that keep them. A famous parrot named Alex, who died last year at the age of 31, was kept not by a sea captain or a pirate but by a scientist (επιστήµονας), Dr. Alice Pepperberg, who tried very hard to teach him to speak English. Alex learned over 100 words and could say short phrases with real meaning. He was said to be as smart as a four-year old child. He could say the names of fifty different things and count up to six. He could recognize seven colors and five shapes, and he understood "bigger", "smaller", "same", and "different." When he was tired of being tested, he said I m gonna go away, and if Dr. Pepperberg seemed disappointed, Alex said I m sorry. If he said Wanna banana, but was given a nut instead, he asked for the banana again, or took the nut and threw it at Dr. Pepperberg! When he was asked questions on tests, he gave the correct answer about four times out of five (that s good enough to pass this exam, and that s no joke). When Alex died, newspapers told the story of his life right next to stories about famous people who had died. If you have a pet, you ve certainly heard him or her say things you ve understood. When your dog barks or your cat meows, you can tell what your pet means, can t you? Rff, says your dog. That means I want to go out now, doesn t it? Rrrffff I want to play outside now. Five minutes later, another louder bark means Now let me in. (Dogs don t say please ). Of course, dogs also talk with their tails, and ears, and teeth. When you see teeth, it probably means I am not happy with what is happening right now. If things don t change I may bite you. Don t argue just do as the dog says, especially if it is not your own. Of course, if you know Dog, you can explain in Dog. Maybe the dog is thinking, If a parrot can learn 100 English words, why can t you learn 100 Dog words and just tell me what you want?

101. In lines 2-3, the words Dog, Cat, Elephant are the names of A) wild animals B) pets C) animal languages D) animals who know languages 102. Alex the parrot spoke good English. Why can t some other parrots do that? A) because they could not pass the Anatolia Entrance Exam B) because they haven t had good teachers C) because Alex could also recognize colors and shapes D) because they are not famous like Alex 103. Which of the following could Alex not do? A) take tests B) give tests C) count up to at least the number of shapes he could recognize D) say what he wanted 104. OK, Alex didn t speak very politely sometimes. Look at the second thing he said in line 18 and choose the most polite (and correct) way of saying it: A) Me want a banana, please. B) I want a banana. C) Please to give me a banana. D) I would like a banana, please. 105. Look at the fourth paragraph (lines 24-33). Only one of the following is true? A) Your dog didn t go out to play. B) Dogs can only talk by barking. C) Dogs speak better English than parrots. D) Your dog asked to go out and to come in.

Reading #2 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 Annie Oakley was born in Ohio in America in 1860 and had six brothers and sisters. When he was six years old her father died and her mother remarried, had another child, then became a widow (χήρα) again. She could not take care of all the children, so she sent Annie to live on a "poor farm" a farm for poor people. From there she was hired to work for a family who were very cruel to her. She later called them "the wolves". Sometimes they would lock her out of the house when it was snowing outside. She spent two terrible years with them, then returned to the poor farm. She was back with her mother when she was 15 years old. Her mother had remarried, but life was still so hard for the family that they were about to lose their farm. To help, Annie taught herself to shoot a gun and hunted small animals, sold them and made 200 dollars which she gave to her mother to save the farm. One of the favourite hobbies of that time was taking part in shooting matches. Such a match was made to see if Frank Butler, a well-known shooter, was better than Annie, a tiny, thin 15-year-old girl. To everybody's surprise, she won the match. The loser was so attracted to her and she to him that they fell in love and were married in 1876. She and Frank started travelling together giving shows. For the performances Annie wore costumes she made herself. She had learnt how to do this at the poor farm. Frank quickly saw that she was better than him and became her manager. Soon after, the famous showman Buffalo Bill Cody, whose Wild West Show was very popular in the United States, invited her to perform and she became a great favourite with audiences not only in her own country but all over Europe as well. What a show she put on! She would throw six glass balls up into the air and shoot them before they fell to the ground. She could shoot something while looking into a mirror, and even cut in half a playing card (τραπουλόχαρτο)! The great Indian chief Sitting Bull, also in the Show, wanted her to be his daughter and gave her the name Watanya Cecilia, which means Little Sure Shot. Unfortunately, she was badly hurt in car and train accidents, and found it more and more difficult to perform. At the same time, the cinema was becoming very popular, and fewer people were going to see the Wild West Show. The result was that she and Frank stopped working in 1913. Annie Oakley was special not just because of being able to shoot well. She was one of the first to believe that women should get equal pay for equal work, and she also wanted women to be able to defend themselves. That is why she taught thousands of them how to shoot. She died in 1926 at the age of 66. Frank, who had been her husband for fifty years, followed her just 18 days later. Through the great American musical "Annie Get Your Gun", which tells the story of her life, her Cinderella (Σταχτοπούτα) story is remembered to this day.
