Sunday, March 2, 2014 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world. St. Vasilios Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Apoluti/kion tou Agi/ou Basilei/ou Kontakion O Master, Prudence, Guide of Wisdom, Instruction to the foolish and Defender of the poor, strengthen my heart and grant it discernment. Give me words, Word of the Father, for behold, I shall not keep my lips from crying out to You, "O Merciful One, have mercy on me who has fallen." 2 15

Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 4. Psalm 75.11,1 Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel. St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand. 14 3

Forgiveness Sunday (Cheesefare) The Gospel of Matthew 6:14-21 The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." KIDS TO CAMP The Parish Assembly and the Parish Council have established a program that any child of a Parishioner in Good Standing, is invited to attend ONE WEEK (their choice of week) at the Metropolitan Boston Camp in Contoocook, New Hampshire, the summer following their completion of 6 th grade in our Church School or 6 th grade in our Greek School FREE OF CHARGE. With generous donations from various organizations, ministries, individuals and bequests we are able to fund this worthwhile endeavor. It is our belief that we must support the amazing camping ministry of our Metropolis and in addition, recommit and reconnect our children to the faith and fellowship of Orthodoxy. We invite others that share our commitment to donate to the Kids to Camp Fund to maintain this valuable undertaking. If your child is interested in participating please fill out the following form and submit it to the church office by April 1, 2014, so we may budget appropriately. In addition, we will continue to help those needing financial assistance to send their children to camp. Please see Fr Chris for this confidential support. Child Parent(s) Donations for Lent and Holy Week It is our custom to decorate the icon of Theotokos for the Akathist Services on Friday evenings during Great Lent. PLEASE PRAY FOR: Nina, Eva, Eleni, Pat, Charles, Serena, James, James, Diane, Harriet. If you wish to add or remove a name from the list, please call the Church Office. CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So, if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also, families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. The Church School Staff Of St. Vasilios Church School Cordially invites all parishioners To celebrate Our Annual Godparents Sunday Communion Breakfast WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. MEMORIALS: We commemorate today the blessed memory of the following Members of our parish who have fallen asleep in the Lord: 40 day Thomas Goodridge 40 day Constance Lalikos 40 day Praskuta Makridis 1 yr. Palm Sunday schedule The First Divine Liturgy on PALM SUNDAY will be held, as is our custom, in the Auditorium of the Educational Center at 9:00 a.m. Orthros will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Church, followed by the Second Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. The faithful of our parish who cannot attend regular morning services to receive Holy Communion during Holy Week because of their work schedules, may receive at two early Divine Liturgies. These liturgies are on Holy Thursday at 6:00 a.m. and on Holy Saturday at 7:00 a.m. In addition to these two Divine Liturgies, we will also celebrate three Presanctified Liturgies, on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday, with 3 additional opportunities for the faithful to receive Holy Communion. OUR LENTEN RECIPES On March 3, 2014, Monday after Cheesefare Sunday, we celebrate Clean or Pure Monday ( Kathari Deftera). It is the beginning of our trip to Holy Easter through the Saracosti or Forty days of Lent, prayer and preparation. Lent is a period of strict fasting. However, physical fasting from food is only one aspect of Lent. It should not excessively dominate our thinking. It is worthless without spiritual fasting from evil. Spiritual fasting is the breaking with sin through repentance and the practice of positive discipline such as prayer, daily reading on the Bible, regular worship and frequent Holy Communion. ( A year of our Lord) However when we do all the above and guide our families through the spiritual fasting the question arise: "What am I going to cook today?" Every Sunday through Lent we will try to give you two recipes that you might find helpful. They will also be on one page that you might remove and save. If you have any question please call Kristi, 781 334 4043. LENTEN SPANAKOPITA 5 Lb. spinach ( no baby spinach) 1 bunch of fresh dill 1 bunch of curly parsley 1 large onion 8 spring onions 1-2 leeks 2 stalks of celery 3/4 cup olive oil 1 package of phyllo. Use choriatiko (thicker) if available Salt and pepper. Wash the first 3 ingredients, drain them well and fold them tightly in a towel. Turn the oven to 350 degrees. Oil a 15 x 10 pan. Chop the onion, green onions, leeks and celery and sauté them in the oil. Chop the well drained vegetables, put them in a bowl. Remove the onions from the oil with a slotted spoon, reserving the oil, and add them to the vegetables. Line the pan with sheets of phyllo brushing each one with the reserved oil. Leave an overlap of 2 inches of phyllo outside the pan rim all around. Lay half of the phyllo sheets. Spoon in the spinach mixture and spread evenly. Fold the overlap phyllo over the mixture. Lay the rest of the phyllo over the mixture brushing each sheet with the reserved oil. With the back of a knife tack the phyllo in all around the pan and brush the remaining oil between the pan and the pita. Brush the top with oil and a little of water. Score the top into serving size squares ( 4x8 or 4x6 ). Bake for one hour in the middle of the oven. Let it stand for half an hour or longer before you serve. My secret: use the flavored oil from sautéing the onions to oil the phyllo. 8 9
