A Letter from Father Costa Dear Parishioners: July 2006 DON T FORGET ABOUT YOUR SOULS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS! ALWAYS STRIVE FOR THE SPIRITUAL. Paradise is not a far distant reality. Rather, it is here and now for us to grasp, embrace and make it our permanent homeland. This mystical dwelling place is the Church of God. It is the Eucharistic setting where God the Son permeates our beings in the form of His Sacred Body and Blood. Allow the Spirit of Truth and Righteousness to bind you indissolubly to the context of the Church, and to enable you to do all things unto the glory of God. For, the human being was created by God for the sole purpose of glorifying Him. Let us live out our full potential as liturgical beings. Allow all our endeavors in this life to be to this end and to the service of our fellow human being. SEE YOU IN CHURCH! The Lord s servant, Dear Parishioners: PRESIDENTS COLUMN We have good reasons to rejoice and celebrate! Greek Festival -2006 was the most successful ever, both in gross income, net income and, most important, in parishioners involvement and especially youth participation. Every phase of the Festival, during the food preparation through the week of the Festival, and every single booth or work station was better organized and performed far better than ever before beyond our best expectations or dreams. The 16% increase in gross sales, compared to the previous best Festival year, was very significant and each one of you who contributed to this incredible success need to feel happy and proud of what we have achieved. When we all work together as a big happy family, there is nothing we cannot achieve. This space is too small for me to identify and thank all of you who contributed so much. But please allow me to briefly break of my rule: Nick Vouras was the force, the link connecting all the segments, the inspiration and the soul of this Festival. We are so lucky to have him. Tom Lempesis and his small but most dedicated and competent food preparation Team performed better than ever. We are truly grateful. John Koninis Jr., as always, coordinated the Herculean task of setting up and breaking down the grounds for our Festival. The GOYA youth did a magnificent job in managing the water and sodas booth. We are so proud of them. How can we describe the joy and pride of the entire parish as we watched those sixty young dancers, with their colorful Greek costumes, dance with such genuine pride of our traditions to the melody of Greek music! As successful as this Festival was, we are still looking for improvement ideas. Please share with us your recommendations. As we discussed in the past, our aging facilities are in great need for major repairs and upgrading. Thanks to the great success of this Festival, we will be in better position to address these needs. I hope each one of you and your families will have a healthy and happy summer. PROKOPIOS THE GREAT MARTYR & HIS MOTHER THEODOSIA THE MARTYR July 8 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful. Kontakion in the Second Tone Devoutly aflame with godly zeal for Christ thy Lord, and armed with the strength and power of the precious Cross, thou didst cast down headlong thy foes' exalted pride, O Procopius, exalting Christ's holy Church, advancing in faith and shedding light on us. Reading: The holy Martyr Procopius was born of a pious father named Christopher, but his mother Theodosia was an idolater. After Christopher's death, she presented Neanias - for this was the Saint's name before - to Diocletian, who was at Antioch in Syria. Diocletian made him Duke of Alexandria, and sent him there to punish the Christians. On the way to Alexandria, our Lord spoke to Neanias as once He had to Saul, and turned this new persecutor to faith in Him. Neanias turned back to Scythopolis, and preached Christ. He was betrayed by his own mother, and was arrested and tormented in Caesarea of Palestine. While he was in prison, the Lord appeared to him again and gave him the new name of Procopius (which is derived from the Greek word meaning "progress, advancement"). He was brought out of prison and taken to worship the idols, but at his prayer, the idols fell; many then believed in Christ and suffered martyrdom, among them certain soldiers, twelve women of senatorial rank, and the Saint's own mother, Theodosia. Saint Procopius, after further torments and imprisonment, was beheaded about the year 290. PANTELEIMON THE GREAT MARYTR & HEALER July 27 Apolytikion in the Third Tone Panteleimon, saintly champion and healer, intercede with our merciful God to grant our souls remission of sins. Kontakion in the Plagal of the First Tone O Champion and Martyr of God, imitating the Merciful and bearing from Him the grace of healing, cure our spiritual ills by your prayers, and set free from the temptation of the eternal enemy those who ceaselessly cry out, "Save us, O Lord." Reading: This Saint, who had Nicomedia as his homeland, was the son of Eustorgius and Eubula. His father was an idolater, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors. It was through her that he was instructed in piety, and still later, he was catechized in the Faith of Christ by Saint Hermolaus (see July 26) and baptized by him. Being proficient in the physician's vocation, he practiced it in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines. Thus, although his parents had named him Pantoleon ("in all things a lion"), because of the compassion he showed for the souls and bodies of all, he was worthily renamed Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful." On one occasion, when he restored the sight of a certain blind man by calling on the Divine Name, he enlightened also the eyes of this man's soul to the knowledge of the truth. This also became the cause for the martyrdom of him who had been blind, since when he was asked by whom and in what manner his eyes had been opened, in imitation of that blind man of the Gospel he confessed with boldness both who the physician was and the manner of his healing. For this he was put to death immediately. Panteleimon was arrested also, and having endured many wounds, he was finally beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian. Saint Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the Martyrs. President, Tony Roustopoulos AHEPA NEWS Message from AHEPA Chapter 95 This past week, the AHEPA achieved yet another significant milestone in its goal to establish the first Greek language immersion and mathematics focused public charter elementary school in Delaware. The Odyssey Charter School hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the school's newly renovated building on 3821 Lancaster Avenue in Wilmington. This occasion marked the fulfillment of Odyssey Charter School's final of many State of Delaware and local school district requirements before opening for classes in August 2006. Among the nearly 200 event attendees, over a dozen prominent US, State, County, and City dignitaries offered the Odyssey Board praise and tributes for providing the children of Delaware an opportunity to learn the Greek language and to be exposed to the history and culture of Greece which have all helped to make America great! The Holy Trinity community and Philhellenes throughout the region may take and share special pride in what is being accomplished by our local AHEPA membership.

Fr. Costa & the Festival Committee Gratefully thank all those parishioners who, as good stewards, gave of their time to help make the 2006 Festival a great success!

Greek School Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Nowadays something is missing from the community. Monday and Wednesday afternoons are not the same anymore. They are silent. The only noises come from the vehicles, which pass by the parking lot of the church in a hurry, and the birds on the trees of the yard of the church. The classrooms are deserted. Without the human presence, even beautiful buildings are ugly. The students have already gone. Few have already graduated. Their troubles are over! However, the rest of them will return to school in September. The summer vacation season has begun. I suggest to the students who will be vacationing in Hellas during the summer NOT TO HESITATE to speak Greek. They may be hesitant to speak Greek because they may not feel comfortable with the Greek language yet and they may be afraid that they will make many mistakes. In addition, they may be afraid that their relatives and friends will make fun of them. What it is important though is not the mistakes they will make when they speak Greek but the improvement of their language skills and knowledge. The school trip to Dorney Park, the first ever in the history of the Greek School, was a big success. Fortyfive people altogether, young and old, participated in the trip. Everybody had fun. Despite the not so hot day, the bravest dared to swim in the various swimming pools and to play with the cold water. However, the real gain was that we began to know each other better. The trip organizer, Eleni Karakasidis, did a great job and we all thank her for her efforts. Every beginning is difficult. We promise that next year s trip will be even better! HAVE A NICE SUMMER! GRADUATES DO NOT FORGET US! Greek School Trip to Dorney Park

To the Holy Trinity Family: July 2006 ~ Bulletin Arrival It has been brought to my attention that some of you have not been receiving your monthly bulletins in a timely manner. I was told this has been an on-going problem. I called the Post Office to try to find out what the problem is and how we might rectify the situation. As per my conversation with the supervisor in charge of bulk mail at the drop-off sight for this parish, this was what I found out: Bulk Mail usually takes anywhere from 5 to 15 days to be delivered. This is because it takes a backseat to all other mail. The timing of delivery depends on the amount of 1 st class, media, air, priority, and certified mail, at any given time. It also depends upon the amount of bulk mail they receive at the same sight at any given time. It takes the backseat because of the price we pay. We get a large discount on bulk mail. The average cost, per piece, for the bulletin is roughly 19 cents. The normal rate for mailing the bulletin is roughly 99 cents per piece. For letters the average cost per piece is 14 cents vs. 39 cents. The Supervisor assured me that the majority of the bulk mail they receive at this sight is out of their hands within three days. It then gets shipped to a warehouse (on the same property), and from there it goes to the individual state s main postal site, and then on to each city s individual site. Then each city delivers it accordingly. There is really nothing that can be done to hurry them along! She did mention that if I could track the problem to a particular zip code that she could look into it further, and find out where the delay is happening. We have thought about sending the bulletin and other mail via regular, 1 st class mail, but this really is not a feasible idea as the parish consists of 715 families and would cost the church roughly $300.00 for every letter that is sent, and the cost of mailing the bulletin would be over $700.00 per month. This is also the reason why the deadline for bulletin articles is the 15 th of each month. I try to ready the bulletin for mailing between the 20 th to the 24 th. This assures that the bulletin will arrive in your homes within the first week of the month. For the next few months I will place a mail date on the bulletin by the mailing label. Please note that date, and if you do not receive your bulletin within 5-15 days from that date, please fill out the form below and send it to me at the church office. You can also call the office at (302) 654-4446 to let me know the date you receive it. Please remember to include your zip code, as this is how they will track its process. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause and assure you that I will do everything possible to get your bulletins to you ASAP!
