SEISMIC RISK PERCEPTION AND COMMUNICATION ΑΝΤΙΛΗΨΗ του ΣΕΙΣΜΙΚΟΥ ΚΙΝΔΥΝΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΕΠΙΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Seismic risk communication is strongly influenced by the risk perception of people. In order to develop effective information and risk communication strategies, we need to understand and explain risk perception
Seismic Risk Communication Επικοινωνία Σεισμικού Κινδύνου Risk communication can influence the risk awareness of communities and people s risk decision making and behaviour Disseminates scientific knowledge in a simple, easy-to understand manner, without any loss of accuracy Objectives are: Make communities aware of the risks, in order to develop their capacities Prevent and reduce risks Enhance communication among them and resilience to respond to crisis events
Πρόγραμμα PACES Ομάδα Στόχος PACES Project Target groups PACES Target Groups are only people with immediate involvement in crisis management, such as: Decision makers Practitioners Volunteers Scientists Civil Protection Staff NO general public, teachers, people with disabilities, etc.
Επικοινωνία Σεισμικού Κινδύνου Risk Communication Strategy THE PURPOSE OF (RISK) COMMUNICATION IS TO ASSIST PEOPLE TO OBTAIN THE INFORMATION THEY NEED TO MAKE INFORMED CHOICES ABOUT THE POSSIBLE RISK THEY FACE. (Wade, C R, Molony, S T, Durbin, M E, Klein S H, and Wahl L E, (1992), P1) Actual Risk (αντικειμενικός κίνδυνος - τεχνικός κόσμος) Communication Strategy (επικοινωνία σεισμικού κινδύνου) Perceived Risk (αντίληψη κινδύνου απλός πολίτης)
Αντικειμενικός Κίνδυνος σε μια περιοχή Actual Risk ΣΕΙΣΜΙΚΟΣ ΚΙΝΔΥΝΟΣ (Seismic Risk) Επιπτώσεις (Consequences) Επικινδυνότητα Hazard (seismicity, tectonics) Τρωτότητα Vulnerability (structural/economic/social conditions) Έκθεση στοιχείων Exposure (people, assets)
Επικοινωνία Σεισμικού Κινδύνου Risk Communication Strategy People overestimate the risk that is not frequent and underestimate the risk that is frequent (Oltedal et al, 2004) Feelings People are more likely to accept what is regarded as a natural hazard (inevitable risk) Knowledge Risk Perception Experience People overestimate or underestimate the risk according to their perception or understanding of the impact of the risk on their own lives (Peter O Neil, 2004) Attitudes Values

Conclusions Applying a communication strategy in predisaster phase, using data from the analysis of risk perception is able to produce useful indications to design seismic risk reduction activities, launch campaigns of awareness and improve risk education Time and recent experiences affect the seismic risk perception and thus the communication strategy
