Text #1 -- Don t get your dress dirty, Franklin Little Franklin, two and a half years old, sits on a chair with his white skirt spread over his legs. His hands are holding a hat with a feather. His hair comes down to his shoulders and he is wearing shiny black shoes. In 1884, when Franklin was photographed, boys wore dresses until age six or seven, when they also had their first haircut. For hundreds of years, boys and girls wore white dresses when they were little children. Although white cotton got dirty easily, it was also easy to clean. (83). That s why it was useful not to have different clothes for boys and girls. In the early 20 th century, pink was a boy s color, because red was said to be a boy s color too. Blue was for girls. (84). In the middle of the 20 th century, after the war, things changed. Boys were expected to wear blue from the time they were babies, and girls to wear pink. Dresses for boys were definitely out. Part 5B, continued Ακολουθήστε τις ίδιες οδηγίες όπως για το Text #1. Text #2 Happy Birthday! Why do we celebrate birthdays with gifts and wishes? People believed that bad luck would come to people on their birthdays. To protect them, friends and family came over to be with the birthday person and bring good wishes. (87). This is how birthday parties began. Birthday traditions such as birthday candles, which carry wishes up to God, are quite similar in many parts of the world. (88). (89). The birthday child hits the object until it breaks open, and all the children share the chocolates and sweets. In many Asian countries birthdays go with traditions to bring good fortune to the birthday child. First birthdays in China are very important. (90). Then they tell the child s future based on which object the child picks up. In most parts of the world we share a common tradition. A person s birthday is celebrated by a party with a specially made cake with candles. The birthday child makes a silent wish and tries to blow out the candles in one breath; if the child is successful, it means the wish will come true. A) Parents may place their one-year-old in the center of a group of objects B) Giving gifts would keep the bad luck even further away C) For example, in Mexico, the piñata, a decorated paper doll or animal, is filled with candy and hung from the ceiling or a tree D) Some traditions belong to certain countries, however.

The giant sat in the forest all day and watched things grow. He didn t care when the rain fell on his head or when the fox shared his bed. He was the last of his kind. He tells me that all this, everything I m telling you, is true. I believe him. I also believe the witch was an ordinary person though her mind was like a broken mirror. The giant, too, was as human as you or me. He was gentle and never hurt a fly. But they both lived in a

Reading #2 (the following article is from a magazine for teenagers) 5 You've heard of Elvis Presley -- haven't you? By the way, the first "e" in "Presley" is pronounced like the "e" in "red", not the "e" in "pretty". He's one of the most famous singers of all time. No one has sold more records and CDs than Elvis, not even Michael Jackson. Elvis also acted in many movies, though few people watch them nowadays. He still earns about $50 million each year, and he has been dead (or maybe not!) for 35 years. He was born in the U.S. state of Mississippi is 1935, and he died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1977 at the age of 42, probably of a heart attack. That home, called Graceland, is now the second most visited home in America, second only to the White House. It's a kind of Elvis museum. Unlike the White House, though, you have to pay to see it. 10 Elvis died rich but he came from a poor family. He often went to church with his parents, even as a baby, where he heard a style of singing called "gospel". Gospel songs are full of love for God, and they come from the heart. People who go to church often sing them along with the singers in the choir (χορωδία). Elvis later sang romantic love songs, but he said he had sung love songs all his life. 15 Elvis also listened to African-American singers when he was young, and he was also influenced by this "black music." When his songs were first played on the radio, people didn't know whether the singer was black or white. They had never heard anyone quite like Elvis before, and he was simply introduced as "a new singer, Elvis Presley." His first big hit, "It's All Right, Mama," was first sung by a black singer named Arthur Crudup. Elvis sang the same song in his own special way, and that way would soon have a new name: rock and roll. American teenagers went crazy for it, especially girls, since Elvis was very good-looking and shook his body while he sang. 20 Many fans refused to believe that he had really died. That is one reason that the phrase "Elvis Lives!" became so popular, and many people even now think that they have seen him in public (he would now be 77 years old!). Probably they have simply seen someone who looks like the young Elvis. That's quite possible, because many people try to look like Elvis (and sing like Elvis and dance like Elvis). Some of these men -- and women! -- even appear on stage as "Elvis impersonators." Some of them are so good at it that it is actually their job to perform as Elvis, and they're well paid,

25 too. One of them has written a book called Be Elvis!, in which he teaches others how to do it. There are contests every year at Graceland, where Elvis lives on in the acts of his impersonators. 30 35
