TEXTUAL VARIANTS Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament, 27 th Edition King James Version New International Version 1 Καὶ ὅτε ἐγγίζουσιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς And when they near into Jerusalem into Bethphage and Bethany toward τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν, ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ 2 καὶ the hill of the olives he delegates two of the learners of him and λέγει αὐτοῖς ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κώμην τὴν κατέναντι ὑμῶν, καὶ he says to them go off into the village the over against you and εὐθὺς εἰσπορευόμενοι εἰς αὐτὴν εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφʼ immediately traveling into into it you will find colt having been bound on ὃν οὐδεὶς οὔπω ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ φέρετε. which no one not yet of men sat loose it and bring 3 καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ τί ποιεῖτε τοῦτο ; εἴπατε ὁ And if some to you might say why you do this Say the κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει, καὶ εὐθὺς αὐτὸν ἀποστέλλει πάλιν ὧδε Master of it need has and immediately it he delegates again here. 4 καὶ ἀπῆλθον καὶ εὗρον πῶλον δεδεμένον πρὸς θύραν ἔξω ἐπὶ And they went off and found colt having been bound toward door outside on τοῦ ἀμφόδου καὶ λύουσιν αὐτόν. 5 καί τινες τῶν ἐκεῖ the street and they loose it And some of the ones there ἑστηκότων ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον ; having stood were saying to them why do you loosening the colt 6 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς καθὼς εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἀφῆκαν The ones but said to them just as said the Jesus and they sent off αὐτούς. 7 καὶ φέρουσιν τὸν πῶλον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ them And they bring the colt toward the Jesus and ἐπιβάλλουσιν αὐτῷ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπʼ αὐτόν. they throw on it the clothes of them and he sat on it 8 καὶ πολλοὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν ἔστρωσαν εἰς τὴν ὁδόν, ἄλλοι δὲ And many the clothes of them spread in the way others but στιβάδας κόψαντες ἐκ τῶν ἀγρῶν. 9 καὶ οἱ προάγοντες καὶ leafy branches having cut out of the fields And the ones leading before and 1 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, 2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. 4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, The Triumphal Entry 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.' " 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying that colt?" 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna!" Comment [K8]: The King James construction of this phrase is awkward and confusing and does not seem to reflect the meaning of the Greek text. Comment [K1]: It does not state that the leaves were of a palm tree, yet the holiday celebrating this event is called Palm Sunday Further word study will need to be done on this subject.

οἱ ἀκολουθοῦντες ἔκραζον the ones following were shouting ὡσαννά εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου hosanna being well spoken the one coming in name of master 10 εὐλογημένη ἡ ἐρχομένη βασιλεία τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν being well spoken αυίδ ὡσαννὰ ἐν τοῖς ὑψίστοις David hosanna in the highest the coming kingdom of the father of us 11 Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ περιβλεψάμενος And he went into into Jerusalem into the temple and having looked around πάντα, ὀψίας ἤδη οὔσης τῆς ὥρας, ἐξῆλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν μετὰ all evening already being of the hour he went out into Bethany with τῶν δώδεκα. the twelve 12 Καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐπείνασεν. And in the tomorrow having come out of them from Bethany he hungered 13καὶ ἰδὼν συκῆν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔχουσαν φύλλα ἦλθεν, εἰ ἄρα And having seen fig tree from from far having leaves he came if then τι εὑρήσει ἐν αὐτῇ, καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐπʼ αὐτὴν οὐδὲν εὗρεν εἰ some he will find in it and having come on it nothing he found except μὴ φύλλα ὁ γὰρ καιρὸς οὐκ ἦν σύκων. 14 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς [n/a] leaves the for season not it was of figs And having answered εἶπεν αὐτῇ μηκέτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἐκ σοῦ μηδεὶς καρπὸν φάγοι. he said to it no longer into the age from you no one fruit may eat καὶ ἤκουον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ. And were hearing the learners him 15 Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα. * Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν And they come into Jerusalem And having gone into into the temple ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ τοὺς ἀγοράζοντας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ he began to throw out the ones selling and the ones buying in the temple saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. 12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: 13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. 14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it. 15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; 16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, saying unto "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" 10 "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest!" 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. Jesus Clears The Temple 12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it. 15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: " 'My house will be called a Comment [K2]: This word can mean praise or blessing, which are quite different. Further word study will need to be done. Comment [K9]: Brief word study will need to be done on of the hour and on eventide Comment [K12]: A full word study will need to be conducted on pot in order to understand why it would be so offensive to carry it through the temple.

, καὶ τὰς τραπέζας τῶν κολλυβιστῶν καὶ τὰς καθέδρας τῶν and the tables of the money changers and the seats of the πωλούντων τὰς περιστερὰς κατέστρεψεν, 16 καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν ἵνα ones selling the doves he turned over and not he was allowing that τις διενέγκῃ σκεῦος διὰ τοῦ ἱεροῦ. 17 καὶ ἐδίδασκεν καὶ some might carry through pot through the temple And he was teaching and ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς οὐ γέγραπται ὅτι saying to them not it has been written that ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς κληθήσεται πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ; the house of me house of prayer will be called to all the nations ὑμεῖς δὲ πεποιήκατε αὐτὸν σπήλαιον λῃστῶν. You but have made it cave of robbers 18 Καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἐζήτουν And were hearing the ruler priests and the writers and they were seeking πῶς αὐτὸν ἀπολέσωσιν ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ αὐτόν, πᾶς γὰρ ὁ how him they might destroy they were fearing for him all for the ὄχλος ἐξεπλήσσετο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ. crowd was astonished on the teaching of him 19 Καὶ ὅταν ὀψὲ ἐγένετο, ἐξεπορεύοντο ἔξω τῆς πόλεως. And when evening became they traveled out outside the city 20 Καὶ παραπορευόμενοι πρωῒ εἶδον τὴν συκῆν ἐξηραμμένην ἐκ And traveling along in morning they saw the fig tree having been dried out from ῥιζῶν. 21 καὶ ἀναμνησθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος λέγει αὐτῷ ῥαββί, ἴδε roots And having been reminded the Peter says to him Rabbi look ἡ συκῆ ἣν κατηράσω ἐξήρανται. 22 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ the fig tree which you cursed it has been dried out And having answered the Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς ἔχετε πίστιν θεοῦ. 23 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι Jesus says to them have trust of God Amen I say to you that ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν who - might say to the hill this be lifted up and be thrown into the θάλασσαν, καὶ μὴ διακριθῇ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀλλὰ πιστεύῃ sea and not he might doubt in the heart of him but he might trust them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. 19 And when even was come, he went out of the city. 20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'" 18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19 When evening came, they went out of the city. The Withered Fig Tree 20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!" 22 "Have faith in God," Jesus answered. 23 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins." Comment [K13]: Brief research will need to be done to understand why the NIV uses the phrase teachers of the law rather than scribes/writers which is written in the Greek text. Comment [K10]: This phrase might be a story telling technique or a widespread idiom and needs to be looked into. Comment [K3]: This word needs to be studied carefully because its meaning can range from faith to belief to trust. Comment [K11]: Faith/belief/trust is repeated a few times in this passage.

ὅτι ὃ λαλεῖ γίνεται, ἔσται αὐτῷ. 24 διὰ τοῦτο λέγω that what he speaks becomes it will be to him Through this I say ὑμῖν, πάντα ὅσα προσεύχεσθε καὶ αἰτεῖσθε, πιστεύετε ὅτι to you all as much as you pray and you ask trust that ἐλάβετε, καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν. 25 Καὶ ὅταν στήκετε προσευχόμενοι, you received and it will be to you And when you stand praying ἀφίετε εἴ τι ἔχετε κατά τινος, ἵνα καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν send off if some you have against some that also the father of you ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἀφῇ ὑμῖν τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν. the in the heavens might send off to you the trespasses of you 27 Καὶ ἔρχονται πάλιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα. καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ περιπατοῦντος And they come again into Jerusalem And in the temple walking around αὐτοῦ ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ him come toward him the ruler priests and the writers and οἱ πρεσβύτεροι 28 καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ the older men and they were saying to him in what kind authority ταῦτα ποιεῖς ; ἢ τίς σοι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἵνα these you do Or who to you gave the authority this that ταῦτα ποιῇς ; 29 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐπερωτήσω these you might do The but Jesus said to them I will ask on ὑμᾶς ἕνα λόγον, καὶ ἀποκρίθητέ μοι καὶ ἐρῶ ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ you one word and you answer me and I will say to you in what kind ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ 30 τὸ βάπτισμα τὸ Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ authority these I do the immersion the of John out of heaven ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ; ἀποκρίθητέ μοι. 31 καὶ διελογίζοντο was or out of men You answer me And they were reasoning πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ διὰ toward themselves saying if we might say out of heaven he will say through τί [ οὖν ] οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ ; 32 ἀλλὰ εἴπωμεν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ; what then not you trusted him But we might say out of men - ἐφοβοῦντο τὸν ὄχλον ἅπαντες γὰρ εἶχον τὸν Ἰωάννην ὄντως They were fearing the crowd all for held the John really any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. 27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, 28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things? 29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. 31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? 32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. 33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. The Authority of Jesus Questioned 27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?" 29 Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John's baptism was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!" 31 They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' 32 But if we say, 'From men'..." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet). 33 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things." Comment [K4]: The Greek seems to mean that if your faith measures the same as your request than it will be granted while the English suggests that if you believe, you will get whatever you ask for in prayer. Comment [K5]: A word study is needed. Comment [K6]: Writers/scribes/teachers of the law appears multiple times in Mark 11. Comment [K7]: Another occurrence of faith/belief/trust.
