Welcome Welcome back! July was a month of change for the Community which elected its new Executive Council for 2011-2013. For those who haven t been kept abreast with the news, we provide all details on our new Council further in our editorial section. On the 15th of this month we celebrated the Assumption of Virgin Mary, with a two-day event at our Croydon church. Some even call it the Winter Easter, since it s one of the most important days in the Greek Orthodox calendar. And who could say no to the Happy Afternoon, organised by the ladies of the Greek Women s Society of SA Taxiarchis! Those who were part of it, enjoyed a lovely time with familiar faces on August 21. As we are slowly leaving winter behind, we are getting ready to welcome spring with Panagia Skiadenis BBQ at St Nicholas Church September 8 and Panagia Despoina Festival at Virginia September 11. It s a happy next couple of months for the Community so come along with us and enjoy! We are looking forward to your opinions. The Community celebrated St Irene Chrysovalantou name day Community members and other parishioners flocked at St Nicholas church on 27 and 28 July to participate in the two-day celebrative event for St Irene Chrysovalantou name day. The celebrations started on Wednesday with the Great Evening Vesper as a preface to the main event. The vesper was conducted by Archimandrite Father Prokopios Kanavas. During his preach, the Father spoke about the spiritual virtues of St Irene and how the people of today reach God by following her example. The celebrations continued on Thursday morning with the Great Divine Liturgy and the Blessing of the Bread ceremony, followed by the procession of the holy icon of St Irene around the church, presence of the Community s clergy. The two-day event concluded with lunch at the St Nicholas Community hall, prepared by the ladies of the Women s Fellowship. Good bye to little Chelsea It was only over a month ago that we organised the Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for little Chelsea s battle against cancer. But God s embrace was a more comfortable place for her. Chelsea s short journey in this life ended early July when she lost that battle. We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest and most sincere condolences to her family and close friends to whom she meant so much. At the Biggest Morning Tea we managed to raise over $7,000 and this amount will go to Chelsea s family. Five year old Chelsea s brave fight against her illness sends a message to all us, that life is precious and it s worth fighting for. This little angel is now in God s care and even though she will be missed, her legacy will be living in our memories for ever. Assumption of the Virgin Mary Our Croydon church the epicentre of celebrations Despite the wintery conditions, thousands of Hellenes across Adelaide celebrated the Assumption of the Virgin Mary day, one of the most significant events in the Greek Orthodox calendar. The epicentre of the celebrations was the Community s celebrative church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at Croydon where hundreds of people came to attend the two day religious event held on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 August. The main part of the celebrations started on Monday morning with the Great Doxology, conducted inside the church which in a matter of minutes reached full capacity. Around 10.30am as the celebration reached its peak, the parishioners participated in the procession of the holy icon along the streets that surround the church and as the tradition goes, everyone had to walk under the icon so they receive the blessing. Meanwhile a number of tents, tables, chairs and grills occupied the church s courtyard and the area next to the Community Hall, ready to kick off the annual feast which sealed its success for yet another year. Annual School Dance-Teachers and students took us to a space odyssey For parents and teachers, it was an out of this world dance. For our Greek Schools students, it was a magical journey in space through their imagination and creative spirits. The Annual School Dance, themed The Solar System was held at Olympic Hall on Saturday August 6 at 7.30pm with the attendance of almost 400 Community members. From planets, to stars and space ships, this year s theme was depicted all around Olympic Hall s spacey decoration with our young students living it up. The students creativity and imagination as well as their talent produced an amazing show with poem citations, sketches and musical performances, all revolving around the solar system. Meanwhile, and for the first time in the Annual School Dance s history, students received awards of Excellency sponsored by The Tramountanas Association. The three students who received the awards were Maria Aslanidis (Year 2 Group), John Pappas (Year 3-7 Group) and Kyriakos Nikias (Year 8-12 Group). The students performances and award presentations gave way to some serious dancing as the students of Olympic Dance Group showed some talent and skills on the dance floor. The fun continued until late in the night with everyone making it to the dance floor as Trio Meraki band played popular Greek songs for every taste. New Executive Board After the recent elections that took place on Sunday 3 July at Olympic Hall, the following 17 candidates were elected to form the new Committee: Stan Psaltis, Peter Tsonis, Nick Portellos, Stephen Aggelis, John Ninos, Sylvia Cassoudakis, George Vasilias, Nick Saripasoglou, Hellas Lucas, Peter Labropoulos, Trevor Kokkinakis, Thea Sarris, Bill Vagenas, Jack Gazecimeon, Evan Bogias, John Lesses, Elias Mavrogiorgis. The recently elected Executive Committee of the Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc, convened on Tuesday 5 July 2011 to appoint the Executive Officers of the Board. At this first meeting, the Executive Committee appointed: Mr Nick Portellos Mr Evan Bogias Ms Sylvia Cassoudakis Mr Peter Tsonis Mr Elias Mavrogiorgis Mr John Ninos President Vice-President General Secretary Treasurer Assistant Secretary Assistant Treasurer Profiles: Stephen Aggelis is a new member of the Executive Council and he works at SA Water. Evan Bogias is one of the longest-running members of the Community. He has been General Secretary of the Executive Council in the past and he runs his own fur products company at Royal Park. John Lesses is another long-running member of the Community and the Executive Council, he has been Vice President in the Executive Council in the past and he also was the Industrial Relations Commissioner. George Vasilias has been involved with the Community for a number of years and has been an on-going member of the Executive Council. He works for a VIP Electrical. Nick Portellos has been previously a member of the Executive Council and an on going member of the Greek Orthodox Community. Sylvia Cassoudakis has been the General Secretary for the Community for the last four years and an on-going member of the Executive Council. She is a pharmacist and she runs her own business. Thea Sarris has been previously a member of the Executive Council. She is an architect and she is a member of architect and interior design firm JPE. Hellas Lucas has been an on going member of the Executive Council, she has been the chair of the Cultural Committee for a number of years and she runs her own catering business. Peter Tsonis has been a member of the Community s Executive as well as the Building Committees for a number of years and he is a semi-retired architect John Ninos is an active member for the Koimisis Theotokou Committee, has been an on-going member of the Executive Council and he drives a taxi. Nick Saripasoglou is of the longest-running members of the Executive Council, he has been the chair of the Schools Committee and he is an electrician. Peter Labropoulos is the youngest of the Executive Committee. He has been part of the Youth Committee and now its Chair, and he is a lawyer. Elias Mavrogiorgis is also a long-running member of the Community, he has been a General as well as Assistant Secretary at the Executive Council and he is the Chair of the Central Church Committee. Stan Psaltis is an honorary member of the Community. He is architect and he designed the Cathedral of Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Trevor Kokkinakis has been involved with the Building and Finance Committee, he is an engineer and he is a partner of TMK Engineering. Bill Vagenas has been involved with the Greek Orthodox Community s affairs for a number of years. He has been previously a member of the Executive Council and he is a lawyer. Jack Gazecimenon has been a member of the Community for quite a while and he has been a volunteer at St Nicholas church for a number of years. Note: Not all members are present in the above photo. Έχει πολυετή δράση στις Κοινοτικές υποθέσεις και έχει υπηρετήσει στο Δ.Σ. για αρκετά χρόνια στο παρελθόν. Ιάκωβος Χατζησυμεών: Επί πολλά χρόνια μέλος της Κοινότητας και εθελοντής στον Άγιο Νικόλαο. Βαγγέλης Μπόγιας: Είναι από τα πιο παλιά μέλη με πάρα πολύ μακρόχρονη δράση και συμμετοχή. Επιχειρηματίας με δικό του εργαστήριο γουναρικών. Επί πολλά χρόνια Γενικός Γραμματέας της Ε.Ο.Κ.Ν.Α. Γιάννης Λεσσές: Έχει επίσης μακρόχρονη υπηρεσία και συμμετοχή στα Κοινοτικά και στο Δ.Σ. Έχει υπηρετήσει Α- ντιπρόεδρος της Κοινότητας και ήταν Επίτροπος Εργασιακών Σχέσεων. Ηλίας Μαυρογιώργης: Επί πολλά χρόνια μέλος της Κοινότητας. Έχει υπηρετήσει Γενικός και Βοηθός Γραμματέας στο Δ.Σ., και είναι Πρόεδρος της Κεντρικής Εκκλησιαστικής Επιτροπής.

Ετήσιος Σχολικός Χορός Μια «Οδύσσεια του Διαστήματος» Για τους γονείς και εκπαιδευτικούς ήταν ένας χορός «από το υπερπέραν». Για τους μαθητές μας, ήταν ένα μαγικό ταξίδι στο διάστημα μέσα από την φαντασία τους και τη δημιουργικότητά τους. Ο Ετήσιος Σχολικός Χορός της Κοινότητας λοιπόν, με θέμα «Το Ηλιακό Σύστημα» πραγματοποιήθηκε το Σάββατο 6 Αυγούστου στις 7.30 το βράδυ σ τ ο γ ν ω σ τ ό Ο λ ύ μ π ι κ Χ ω λ, φ ι λ ο ξ ε ν ώ ν τ α ς 400 περίπου καλεσμένους. Πλανήτες, αστέρια, διαστημόπλοια και άλλες δημιουργίες αποτελούσαν τα κύρια στοιχεία της διακόσμησης του Ολύμπικ Χωλ, με τους μικρούς μαθητές να το απολαμβάνουν στο μέγιστο. Η δημιουργικότητα και η φαντασία καθώς επίσης και το ταλέντο των νεαρών μαθητών και μαθητριών δημιούργησαν ένα φανταστικό θέαμα με ποιήματα, σκετσάκια και μουσικές παραστάσεις, όλα γύρω από το Ηλιακό Σύστημα. Στο μεταξύ, και για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του Ετήσιου Σχολικού Χορού, πραγματοποιήθηκε και η απονομή Βραβείων Αριστείας σε μαθητές των σχολείων μας. Οι τρεις μαθητές που βραβεύτηκαν ήταν οι Μαρία Ασλανίδη (γκρουπ 2 ης Τάξης), Iωάννης Παππάς (γκρουπ 3 ης -7 ης Τάξης) και Κυριάκος Νικίας (γκρουπ 8 ης -12 ης Τάξης) ενώ τα βραβεία ήταν χορηγία του Συλλόγου Γεωργίου Τραμουντάνα. Τις μαθητικές παραστάσεις και την απονομή βραβείων ακολούθησαν χορευτικές παραστάσεις από τους μαθητές της Σχολής Χορού της Κοινότητας, οι οποίοι εντυπωσίασαν με το ταλέντο και τις ικανότητές τους. Η διασκέδαση συνεχίστηκε μέχρι αργά το βράδυ με την ορχήστρα «Τρίο Μεράκι» να παίζει δημοφιλή Ελληνικά τραγούδια για κάθε γούστο, ενώ η πίστα γέμισε από τους φίλους του ελληνικού χορού. Το θέμα της «Οδύσσειας» 2011 είναι: «Ξανασμίγουμε με τις Ρίζες μας», και καθ όλη τη διάρκεια του Φεστιβάλ, το Ολύμπικ Χωλ θα είναι επίκεντρο ποικίλων εκδηλώσεων, φιλοξενώντας εκθέσεις, διαλέξεις, πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις, εργαστήρια για παιδιά κατά τις διακοπές του σχολικού τριμήνου, καφετέρια και πολλά άλλα ακόμα. Καλωσήρθατε Σας χαιρετούμε και πάλι. Ο Ιούλιος ήταν μήνας αλλαγής για την Κοινότητα, με την εκλογή νέου Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου για την περίοδο 2011 2013. Για όσους δεν έχουν προλάβει να ακούσουν όλα τα νέα, παραθέτουμε όλες τις λεπτομέρειες για το νέο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο παρακάτω. Στις 15 του μηνός γιορτάσαμε την Κοίμηση της Παναγίας με διήμερη εκδήλωση στην εκκλησία μας στο Κρόϋντον. Μερικοί λένε τη γιορτή αυτή «Το Πάσχα του Χειμώνα», αφού είναι μια από τις πλέον σημαντικές μέρες του ελληνορθόδοξου εορτολογίου. Και ποιος θα μπορούσε να αρνηθεί το «Χαρούμενο Απόγευμα» που διοργάνωσαν ο Σύλλογος Κυριών και Δίδων «Ο Ταξιάρχης»; Όσοι έλαβαν μέρος πέρασαν ευχάριστες ώρες με γνωστά πρόσωπα στις 21 Αυγούστου. Καθώς αφήνουμε πίσω σιγά σιγά τον χειμώνα, ετοιμαζόμαστε να καλωσορίσουμε την άνοιξη με το μπάρμπεκιου για την γιορτή της Γέννησης της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου στις 8 Σεπτεμβρίου στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου και το Πανηγύρι της Παναγίας Δέσποινας στην Βιρτζίνια στις 11 του ιδίου μηνός. Πλήθος μελών της Κοινότητας, καθώς και άλλοι ενορίτες, γέμισαν την εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου στις 27 και 28 Ιουλίου για το εορταστικό διήμερο της Αγίας Ειρήνης Χρυσοβαλάντου. Οι εορτασμοί άρχισαν την Τετάρτη με τον Μέγα Εσπερινό. Τον Εσπερινό τέλεσε ο Αρχιμανδρίτης Πατήρ Προκόπιος Κανάβας, ο οποίος, κατά το κήρυγμά του, μίλησε για τις ιερές αρετές της Αγίας Ειρήνης και για το πώς θα μπορεί ο σημερινός κόσμος να πλησιάσει πιο κοντά στον Θεό ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα της Αγίας. Οι εορτή συνεχίστηκε την Πέμπτη πρωί με Πανηγυρική Θεία Λειτουργία και Αρτοκλασία, και μετά ακολούθησε περιφορά της εικόνας της Αγίας Ειρήνης γύρω από την εκκλησία, παρουσία του κλήρου της Κοινότητας. Το διήμερο έληξε με γεύμα που ετοίμασαν οι κυρίες της Φιλόπτωχου στην αίθουσα του Αγίου Νικολάου. Στερνό αντίο στην μικρή Τσέλση Δύο μήνες μόλις πέρασαν από τότε που οργανώσαμε το «Μεγαλύτερο Πρωινό Τσάι» για να κάνουμε έρανο και να βοηθήσουμε την μικρή Τσέλση στον αγώνα της με τον καρκίνο. Αλλά η αγκαλιά του Θεού ήταν πιο άνετος τόπος για την Τσέλση, και το μικρό ταξίδι της σε τούτη τη ζωή έφτασε στο τέλος του στις αρχές Ιουλίου όταν έχασε τη μάχη. Απευθύνουμε βαθύτατα συλλυπητήρια στην οικογένειά της και στους στενούς της φίλους. Στο «Μεγαλύτερο Πρωινό Τσάι» συλλέξαμε πάνω από $7,000 τα οποία θα δοθούν τώρα στην οικογένεια της Τσέλση. Ο ηρωική μάχη που έδωσε η πεντάχρονη Τσέλση με την επάρατη ασθένειά της δίνει μήνυμα σε όλους μας: ότι η ζωή είναι πολύτιμη και ότι αξίζει να παλεύουμε για αυτή. Το μικρό αγγελουδάκι είναι πια στα χέρια του Θεού, και ενώ θα μας λείψει πάρα πολύ, θα ζει στην μνήμη μας για πάντα. Με λαμπρότητα γιορτάστηκε ο Δεκαπενταύγουστος Αψηφώντας την βροχή και το κρύο, χιλιάδες ομογενείς γιόρτασαν την εορτή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου, μια πιο σημαντικές γιορτές της Ορθοδοξίας. Επίκεντρο των εορτασμών ήταν ο ομώνυμος Ι. Ναός Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου της Κοινότητας που βρίσκεται στο Croydon όπου εκατοντάδες μέλη της παροικίας πήραν μέρος στο διήμερο θρησκευτικό πανηγύρι στις 14 και 15 Αυγούστου, παρουσία στελεχών της πολιτικής ηγεσίας. Οι εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις του Δεκαπενταύγουστου συνεχίστηκαν την Δευτέρα το πρωί με τη Πανηγυρική Δοξολογία μέσα στον Ι. Ναό ο οποίος μέσα σε θέμα λεπτών κατακλύστηκε από πιστούς. Γύρω στις 10.30 το πρωί ο εορτασμός κορυφώθηκε και οι πιστοί ακολούθησαν τη λιτανεία της ιερής εικόνας της Παναγίας στους δρόμους γύρω από την εκκλησία ενώ τηρώντας την παράδοση, περνούν κάτω από αυτήν για καλή τύχη και ευημερία. Εντωμεταξύ ο εξωτερικός χώρος του ναού είχε στολιστεί κατάλληλα, ενώ τέντες, τραπέζια και ψησταριές είχαν στηθεί από νωρίς, έτοιμα για το γλέντι που ακολούθησε και το οποίο σφράγισε την επιτυχία του για ακόμη μια χρονιά.
