Αδελφοί μου, σήμερα Κυριακή της παραβολής του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου, αρχίζει και η περίοδος του Τριωδίου. Αυτή η περίοδος κορυφώνεται με το μέγα γεγονός της πιστεώς μας, την Ανάσταση του Κυρίου. Όπως έχουν προβλέψει οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας, για να φτάσουμε στο γεγονός της Αναστάσεως, χρειαζόμαστε να προετοιμαστούμε σωματικά και πνευματικά. Δεν μπαίνουμε κατευθείαν στην Τεσσαρακοστή και στην νηστεία, αλλά σιγά-σιγά. Αυτή η προετοιμασία γίνεται σταδιακά. Ως αρχή της περιόδου του Τριωδίου, οι Πατέρες τοποθέτησαν πρώτα δύο Κυριακές, που αναφέρονται στις πνευματικές αρετές που χρειάζονται για να αρχίσουμε το πνευματικό βάδισμα προς το Πάσχα. Η πρώτη Κυριακή, αναφέρεται στην παραβολή του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου και η δεύτερη Κυριακή στην παραβολή του Ασώτου. Και οι δύο παραβολές μας αποδεικνύουνε ποιο είναι το θετικό αποτέλεσμα όταν, αντιμετωπίζουμε με ταπείνωση την σχέση μας με τον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο. Σπουδαία και αναγκαία η αρετή της ταπείνωσης. Μετά τις δύο εβδομάδες, όταν έχουμε αρχίσει ψυχολογικά να προετοιμαζόμαστε, αρχίζουμε να προετοιμαζόμαστε και σωματικά. Η σωματική προετοιμασία αρχίζει με την Κυριακή της Απόκρεω, που είναι και η τελευταία ημέρα κατά την οποία μπορούμε να φάγουμε κρέας. Μέχρι το Πάσχα κατά τους κανόνες της Εκκλησίας μας, όσοι μπορούν και θέλουν, κάνουν αποχή από όλα τα κρέατα. Επιτρέπονται μόνο ψάρια, όλα τα προϊόντα γαλακτερά, αυγά και τα παρόμοια για μια εβδομάδα ακόμα, δηλαδή μέχρι την Κυριακή της Τυρινής. Βλέπουμε ότι, και η νηστεία αρχίζει σιγά σιγά και όχι απότομα. Μάλιστα η Κυριακή της Απόκρεω, είναι αφιερωμένη στην Δευτέρα Παρουσία του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού. Η

Κυριακή αυτή αφιερώνεται στην Δευτέρα Παρουσία, για να μας θυμίσει πως κάθε πράξη που κάνουμε σε αυτή την ζωή είναι κάτι για το οποίο θα δώσουμε λόγο όταν έρθει ο Κύριος στην Δευτέρα Παρουσία, <<εν δόξῃ>>. Η Δευτέρα Παρουσία θα είναι ημέρα κρίσεως και αναπόφευκτη για κάθε ψυχή. Εκείνη την ημέρα δεν θα χωρούν ούτε λόγια, ούτε δικαιολογίες. Την ίδια στιγμή, έχοντας στον νουν μας ότι, είναι αναπόφευκτη η Δευτέρα Παρουσία, αυτό γίνεται αιτία να μένουμε σταθεροί στην πίστη μας. Η Τέταρτη Κυριακή του Τριωδίου είναι της Τυρινής. Από αυτή την Κυριακή αρχίζει οριστικά η νηστεία, με την αρχή της Τεσσαρακοστής. Από την επόμενη ημέρα, την Καθαρά Δευτέρα, έχουμε αποχή από όλα τα κρεατικά, ψάρια, γαλακτερά και όλα τα προϊόντα που προέρχονται από ζώα. Πέρα από την νηστεία, η Κυριακή της Τυρινής είναι αφιερωμένη εις την ανάμνηση της εξορίας των πρωτοπλάστων από τον Παράδεισο. Το γεγονός αυτό μας υπενθυμίζει, τι πρόκειται να πάθουμε εάν δεν υπακούμε στις εντολές του Κυρίου. Η εξορία των πρωτοπλάστων μάλιστα, ήταν και η αιτία για να έρθει ο Ιησούς Χριστός στην γη, για να επαναφέρει στον Παράδεισο τον άνθρωπο και να βρει την σωτηρία του. Ο Παράδεισος όμως, δεν είναι κάτι δεδομένο, αλλά εξαρτάται από την δική μας θέληση, υπακούοντας σε ό,τι μας προστάζει ο Κύριος. Η νηστεία, η σωματική και η πνευματική, είναι αυτό που μας δίνει την δυνατότητα και την δύναμη να αντιμετωπίσουμε κάθε δοκιμασία και τους πειρασμούς του διαβόλου και είναι αυτό που μας καταξιώνει ενώπιον του Θεού. Επιστρέφοντας στην σημερινή Κυριακή, της παραβολής του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου, είναι ενδεικτικό πως η πνευματική μας πορεία μέσα στην εκκλησία, αρχίζει από την αρετή της ταπείνωσης. Η ζωή μας και ο πνευματικός αγώνας μας, πρέπει να χαρακτηρίζονται από την ταπείνωση. Αυτή η αρετή είναι βασικό χαρακτηριστικό κάθε χριστιανού. Ο εγωισμός και η φιλοδοξία, δεν έχουν χώρο στην πίστη μας. Αντιθέτως, μας σπρώχνουν μακριά από τον θεό. Ο Ιησούς αναφέρει τον Τελώνη και τον Φαρισαίο, διότι στην κοινωνία των Ιουδαίων ήταν οι δύο ακραίες τάξεις. Οι Τελώνες θεωρούντο οι πιο αμαρτωλοί, διότι συνήθως εκμεταλλευόντουσαν την θέση τους, για να κλέβουν αυτούς από τους οποίους έπαιρναν τον φόρο. Αντιθέτως, οι Φαρισαίοι θεωρούντο οι διδάσκαλοι του νόμου των Ιουδαίων. Ο Τελώνης αναγνώρισε την αμαρτία του και με σκυμμένη την κεφαλή προσευχόταν στον Θεό λέγοντας: << Ὁ Θεός, ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ>>, ζητώντας έλεος από τον Θεό. Ενώπιον του Θεού έφυγε από τον Ναό <<δεδικαιωμένος>> όπως μας λέει η Γραφή. Ενώπιον του Θεού όλοι μας είμαστε αμαρτωλοί. Ο Θεός δεν αναγνωρίζει αξιώματα και θέσεις. Από όλους απαιτεί μετάνοια και ταπείνωση. Όπως και στις ημέρες του Ιησού, έτσι και σήμερα, υπάρχουν Φαρισαίοι οι οποίοι δεν ζητούν το έλεος του Θεού, αλλά την δόξα. Πρέπει όμως, να γνωρίζουμε πως μόνο ο Θεός είναι σε θέση να κρίνει τον κάθε άνθρωπο. Ο Τελώνης δεν ασχολήθηκε με κανένα άλλο παρά με τον εαυτόν του και δικαιώθηκε από τον Θεό. Ας ασκήσουμε και εμείς στην δική μας ζωή την αρετή της ταπείνωσης, για να βρούμε και εμείς δικαίωση ενώπιον του Θεού. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord. Verse: Oh God, hear my cry. Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every

way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. The Triodion Period: We begin this three week period of the Church s calendar on Sunday Feb. 27 th -10 weeks before the Glorious Feast of Pascha. These three Sundays prepare us for the Great Lent (March 18 th Clean Monday) and are characterized with parables in each of these Gospel readings of those 3 Sundays-The Publican and the Pharisee, The Prodigal Son and Judgment Sunday. But what is a parable? In short, they are word-stories that reveal to us a profound spiritual lesson that we are called to put into practice! We can only do so if we truly listen to its meaning and apply it (put it into practice) to our daily lives. So if we have ears to hear, let us hear their message and be responsive to them! Ηπειρωτών Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for wealth's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humblemindedness. Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights. It is located in Litchfield, Conn. There are four weekly sessions being offered July 1-7, July 8-14, July 15-21 and July 22-28. The cost is about $600 per week. The camp is located on a lake, so there are aquatic activities (boating, tubing, swimming) as well as arts and crafts, a ropes course, softball/soccer fields, basketball courts and there is a weekly barbecue, campfire and talent show. There are two daily Chapel services (morning and evening), Sunday Divine Liturgy, as well as discussions with every age group about our Orthodox faith led by our priests from the area making the experience totally Christ centered. There is a full time nurse on staff 24 hours a day and the camper to counselor ratio is about 6 to 1 or lower. February 25 - Tarasios, Patriarch of Constantinople - This Saint was the son of one of the foremost princes in Constantinople, and was originally a consul and first among the Emperor's private counselors. Then, in 784, he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople by the Sovereigns Irene and her son Constantine Porphyrogenitos. He convoked the Seventh Ecumenical Council that upheld the holy icons, and became the boast of the Church and a light to the clergy. He reposed in 806. The current Archbishop of South America is named Tarasios.
