Sunday of The Prodigal Son The Sunday of the Prodigal Son is the second Sunday of a three-week period prior to the commencement of Great Lent. On the previous Sunday, the services of the Church began to include hymns from the Triodion, a liturgical book that contains the services from the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, the tenth before Pascha (Easter), through Great and Holy Saturday. As with the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, the theme of this Sunday is repentance, and the focus on the parable of the Prodigal Son leads Orthodox Christians to contemplate the necessity of repentance in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. 1

ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ. Κυριακή του Ασώτου, Α Κορινθίους 6,12-20 Nαι, σωστά, «όλα μου επιτρέπονται, μα όλα δε συμφέρουν. Nαι, πράγματι, «όλα μου επιτρέπονται», μα εγώ δε θ αφήσω τίποτε να με εξουσιάσει. Nαι, είναι αλήθεια πως «τα φαγητά προορίζονται για την κοιλιά και η κοιλιά για τα φαγητά», μα και αυτήν και αυτά ο Θεός θα τα καταργήσει. Tο σώμα, όμως, δεν προορίστηκε για την πορνεία, αλλά για να δοξάζει τον Kύριο, ώστε και ο Kύριος να δοξάσει το σώμα. Kαι πραγματικά, ο Θεός και τον Kύριο ανέστησε και εμάς θα μας αναστήσει με τη δική του τη δύναμη. Δεν ξέρετε ότι τα σώματά σας είναι μέλη του Xριστού; Tα μέλη λοιπόν του Xριστού να τα πάρω και να τα κάνω μέλη πόρνης; Aδύνατο! Ή μήπως δεν ξέρετε πως αυτός που έρχεται σε σαρκική επαφή με πόρνη, γίνεται ένα σώμα μαζί της; Γιατί, όπως λέει η Γραφή: «Oι δύο θα γίνουν ένα σώμα». Eκείνος, όμως, που προσκολλιέται στον Kύριο, γίνεται ένα πνεύμα μαζί του. Mακριά από την πορνεία λοιπόν! Όποιο άλλο αμάρτημα κι αν διαπράξει ο άνθρωπος, δεν το διαπράττει ενάντια στο σώμα του. Eκείνος, όμως, που πορνεύει, αμαρτάνει ενάντια στο ίδιο του το σώμα! Ή μήπως δεν ξέρετε πως το σώμα σας είναι ναός του Aγίου Πνεύματος, που βρίσκεται μέσα σας, και ότι είναι από το Θεό δοσμένο σε σας κι επομένως δεν ανήκετε στους εαυτούς σας, αφού αγοραστήκατε με πληρωμή τιμήματος; Δοξάστε, λοιπόν, πραγματικά το Θεό και με το σώμα σας και με το πνεύμα σας, τα οποία ανήκουν στο Θεό. Ανάγνωσμα: Λουκ. 15, 11 32 Είπε ο Κύριος αυτή την παραβολή: «Κάποιος άνθρωπος είχε δύο γιους. Ο μικρότερος απ αυτούς είπε στον πατέρα του: Πατέρα, δώσε μου το μερίδιο της περιουσίας που μου αναλογεί κι εκείνος τους μοίρασε την περιουσία. Ύστερα από λίγες μέρες ο μικρότερος γιος τα μάζεψε όλα κι έφυγε σε χώρα μακρινή. Εκεί σκόρπισε την περιουσία του κάνοντας άσωτη ζωή. Όταν τα ξόδεψε όλα, έτυχε να πέσει μεγάλη πείνα στη χώρα εκείνη, και άρχισε και αυτός να στερείται. Πήγε λοιπόν κι έγινε εργάτης σε έναν από τους πολίτες εκείνης της χώρας, ο οποίος τον έστειλε στα χωράφια του να βόσκει χοίρους. Έφτασε στο σημείο να θέλει να χορτάσει με τα ξυλοκέρατα που έτρωγαν οι χοίροι, αλλά κανένας δεν του έδινε. Τελικά συνήλθε και είπε: «Πόσοι εργάτες του πατέρα μου έχουν περίσσιο ψωμί κι εγώ εδώ πεθαίνω της πείνας! Θα σηκωθώ και θα πάω στον πατέρα μου και θα του πω: πατέρα, αμάρτησα στον Θεό και σε σένα δεν είμαι άξιος πια να λέγομαι γιος σου, κάνε με σαν έναν από τους εργάτες σου». Σηκώθηκε, λοιπόν, και ξεκίνησε να πάει στον πατέρα του. Ενώ ήταν ακόμη μακριά, τον είδε ο πατέρας του, τον σπλαχνίστηκε, έτρεξε, τον αγκάλιασε 4

σφικτά και τον καταφιλούσε. Τότε ο γιος του τού είπε: «Πατέρα, αμάρτησα στο Θεό και σε σένα και δεν αξίζω να λέγομαι παιδί σου». Ο πατέρας όμως γύρισε στους δούλους του και τους διέταξε: «Βγάλτε γρήγορα την καλύτερη στολή και ντύστε τον φορέστε του δαχτυλίδι στο χέρι και δώστε του υποδήματα. Φέρτε το σιτευτό μοσχάρι και σφάξτε το να φάμε και να ευφρανθούμε, γιατί αυτός ο γιος μου ήταν νεκρός και αναστήθηκε, ήταν χαμένος και βρέθηκε». Έτσι άρχισαν να ευφραίνονται. Ο μεγαλύτερος γιος του βρισκόταν στο χωράφι και καθώς ερχόταν και πλησίαζε στο σπίτι, άκουσε μουσικές και χορούς. Φώναξε, λοιπόν, έναν από τους υπηρέτες και ρώτησε να μάθει τι συμβαίνει. Εκείνος του είπε: «Γύρισε ο αδελφός σου, κι ο πατέρας σου έσφαξε το σιτευτό μοσχάρι, γιατί του ήρθε πίσω γερός». Αυτός τότε θύμωσε και δεν ήθελε να μπει μέσα. Ο πατέρας του βγήκε και τον παρακαλούσε, εκείνος όμως του αποκρίθηκε: «εγώ τόσα χρόνια σου δουλεύω και ποτέ δεν παράκουσα καμιά εντολή σου κι όμως σ εμένα δεν έδωσες ποτέ ένα κατσίκι για να ευφρανθώ με τους φίλους μου. Όταν όμως ήρθε αυτός ο γιος σου, που κατασπατάλησε την περιουσία σου με πόρνες, έσφαξες για χάρη του το σιτευτό μοσχάρι». Κι ο πατέρας του τού απάντησε: «παιδί μου, εσύ είσαι πάντοτε μαζί μου κι ό,τι είναι δικό μου είναι και δικό σου. Έπρεπε όμως να ευφρανθούμε και να χαρούμε, γιατί ο αδελφός σου αυτός ήταν νεκρός κι αναστήθηκε, ήταν χαμένος και βρέθηκε». GOSPEL: Sunday of the Prodigal Son The Gospel according to Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. «Πάτερ Αγαθέ, εμακρύνθην από σου, μη εγκαταλίπεις με, μηδέ αχρείον δείξης της Βασιλείας Σου. Ο εχθρός ο παμπόνηρος εγύμνωσέ με και ήρε μου τον πλούτον, της ψυχής τα χαρίσματα ασώτως διεσκόρπισα» (Δοξαστικό Αίνων Κυριακής του Ασώτου). Βρισκόμαστε ήδη στη δεύτερη Κυριακή του Τριωδίου. Από την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα έχουμε εισέλθει στην ευλογημένη αυτή περίοδο των εβδομήντα ημερών πριν από το Πάσχα, που σκοπό έχει να μας προετοιμάσει να συμπορευθούμε μαζί με το Χριστό στο Πάθος και την Ανάστασή του. Αφού την προηγούμενη Κυριακή με την παραβολή του Τελώνη και του Φαρισαίου διδαχτήκαμε την μέγιστη αξία της ταπεινοφροσύνης, με τη σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή του Ασώτου Υιού ή αλλιώς του Σπλαχνικού Πατέρα διδασκόμαστε τη βαρύνουσα σημασία της μετάνοιας και τη χωρίς όρια ευσπλαχνία του Θεού. Οι Γραμματείς και οι Φαρισαίοι, βλέποντας πως ο Ιησούς Χριστός δεχόταν τους αμαρτωλούς και έτρωγε μαζί τους, διαμαρτύρονταν έντονα (Λουκ. 15, 2). Έτσι ο Κύριος παίρνει την αφορμή και, αφού λέει την παραβολή του χαμένου προβάτου (Λουκ. 15, 3-7) και της χαμένης δραχμής (Λουκ. 15, 8-10), εκφωνεί τη θαυμάσια αυτή παραβολή του Ασώτου. Τρία είναι τα κύρια πρόσωπα της παραβολής: ο φιλεύσπλαχνος πατέρας, ο νεώτερος και ο πρεσβύτερος υιός. Ο μικρός γιός πιστεύει πως θα αποκτήσει την πλήρη ελευθερία του όταν εγκαταλείψει το πατρικό σπίτι. Ζητά έτσι το μερίδιο της περιουσίας που του αναλογεί και εγκαθίσταται σε χώρα μακρινή, όπου και αναζητεί το κρασί της ευτυχίας. Εκεί διασκορπίζει την πατρική περιουσία φτάνοντας στον έσχατο ξεπεσμό, σε μια χωρίς όρια άσωτη ζωή. Έρχεται στη συνέχεια μεγάλη πείνα, αρχίζει να στερείται. Γίνεται χοιροβοσκός και επιθυμεί να χορτάσει με τα χαρούπια που τρώνε οι χοίροι. Τελικά συνέρχεται, συναισθάνεται την άθλιά του κατάσταση και παίρνει την απόφαση της επιστροφής στο πατρικό σπίτι. Ο πατέρας, που όλα τα χρόνια της αποδημίας τον περίμενε με αγωνία, μόλις τον βλέπει από μακριά τρέχει και τον χώνει στην αγκαλιά του. Τον αποκαθιστά και διοργανώνει φαγοπότι για τη χαρά της επιστροφής του γιού του. Ο Πατέρας της παραβολής είναι ο ίδιος ο Θεός και τα δύο παιδιά του είναι οι δίκαιοι και οι αμαρτωλοί. Ο Θεός λοιπόν δίνει τα αγαθά Του, «το επιβάλλον μέρος της ουσίας», εξ ίσου στους ανθρώπους, «βρέχοντας επί δικαίους και αδίκους» (πρβλ. Ματθ. 5, 45). Τέτοια αγαθά είναι π.χ. το αυτεξούσιο, η φρόνηση, ο φυσικός νόμος της συνειδήσεως, ο γραπτός νόμος των εντολών του Θεού, ακόμα και οι φυσικές δυνάμεις του σώματος. Ο νεώτερος όμως γιός, μακριά από το Θεό και την Εκκλησία Του, διασκορπίζει όλα αυτά τα χαρίσματα, προτιμώντας την αμαρτία. Στη συνέχεια, βιώνει έντονα την εγκατάλειψη της θείας χάριτος. Τότε ο Άσωτος, στην έσχατη κατάπτωσή του, θυμάται τη θαλπωρή του πατρικού του σπιτιού. Σκέφτεται ότι ακόμα και οι έμμισθοι υπάλληλοι του πατέρα του «περισσεύουσιν άρτων», ζουν δηλαδή ευτυχισμένοι, πλούσιοι από τα χαρίσματα και τη χάρη του Θεού. Τότε ευτυχώς δεν κατρακυλά στο βάραθρο της απόγνωσης, αλλά μετανοεί αληθινά για τις πράξεις του και παίρνει αμέσως την απόφαση της επιστροφής στο Θεό Πατέρα. Ο Θεός, επειδή είναι πέρα για πέρα εύσπλαχνος και φιλάνθρωπος, συγχωρά αμέσως το μετανοούντα γιό Του, δίνοντάς του πλήρη άφεση αμαρτιών. Διατάζει τους δούλους Του και φορούν στον πρώην Άσωτο τη στολή του υιού, που συμβολίζει τη στολή της καθαρότητας και της αγιοσύνης. 6

Τί γίνεται όμως με το μεγάλο γιό, που καθώς επιστρέφει από τα χωράφια ακούει μουσικές και χορούς στο πατρικό σπίτι; Αφού ρωτά και μαθαίνει τα καθέκαστα, οργίζεται με την επιείκεια του Πατέρα και αρνείται να λάβει μέρος στο συμπόσιο. Ο Πατέρας τον παρακαλεί να συμμετάσχει στην χαρά τους, αλλά αυτός διαμαρτύρεται πως αν και πάντα εφάρμοζε το πατρικό θέλημα, ούτε καν ένα κατσίκι δεν του δόθηκε για να χαρεί με τους φίλους του. Όπως προαναφέραμε, αφορμή της εκφώνησης της παραβολής αυτής ήταν ο γογγυσμός των Φαρισαίων και των Γραμματέων επειδή ο Ιησούς Χριστός δεχόταν τους αμαρτωλούς. Έτσι λοιπόν, ο πρεσβύτερος υιός παραβάλλεται κατά κύριο λόγο με τους Γραμματείς και τους Φαρισαίους, οι οποίοι θεωρούνταν από τους ανθρώπους δίκαιοι. Αυτοί όμως ήταν υποκριτές και στερημένοι ακόμα και από τις πιο μικρές δωρεές του Θεού, που συμβολίζονται με το κατσίκι. Έτσι ο Θεάνθρωπος τους καλεί να συμμετάσχουν κι αυτοί στη Θεία Χάρη και στη χαρά της πνευματικής ανάστασης των αδελφών τους, αφήνοντας κατά μέρος τη σκληροκαρδία και τυπολατρία τους. Η παραβολή του Ασώτου αποτελεί ένα ύμνο στη δύναμη της μετάνοιας και στο μεγαλείο της θείας αγάπης και μακροθυμίας. Ο Γέροντας Σωφρόνιος του Έσσεξ, στον «Περί Μετανοίας» λόγο του, αναφέρει: «Η μετάνοια είναι ανεκτίμητον δώρον προς την ανθρωπότητα. Η μετάνοια είναι το θείον θαύμα διά την αποκατάστασιν ημών μετά την πτώσιν. Η μετάνοια είναι έκχυσις θείας εμπνεύσεως εφ ημάς δυνάμει της οποίας ανυψούμεθα προς τον Θεόν, τον Πατέρα ημών, ίνα ζήσωμεν αιωνίως εν τω φωτί της αγάπης Αυτού. Διά της μετανοίας συντελείται η θέωσις ημών. Τούτο είναι γεγονός ασύλληπτου μεγαλείου». Όντως! Αν δεν υπήρχε η μετάνοια, τότε όλοι θα ήμασταν καταδικασμένοι! Ποιος μπορεί να πει ότι δεν αποδημεί σε «χώραν μακράν», λίγο ή πολύ, συχνά ή πιο σπάνια; Aς μιμούμαστε λοιπόν το παράδειγμα της μετάνοιας και της επιστροφής του Άσωτου υιού. Sunday of The Prodigal Son The name for this Sunday is taken from the parable of our Lord Jesus Christ found in Luke 15:11-32. The parable is the story of a man and his two sons. The youngest of the sons asks his father to give him his inheritance. The father does this, and soon after the son leaves and journeys to a distant country (vv. 11-13). After the younger son arrives, he squanders all of his possessions with prodigal living. Within a short period of time, he wastes everything. A severe famine comes, but he has nothing and falls into great need (vv. 13-14). He is able to find work feeding swine, but this does not improve his situation. The Scriptures say, He would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, but no one gave him anything (vv. 15-16). The parable says that in the midst of his dire conditions, he came to himself. He realized that his father s hired servants have enough to eat and food to spare, while he perishes with hunger. He says, I will arise and go to my father and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants (vv. 17-19). He arose and returned to his father. But as he approached, his father saw him at a great distance. The father had compassion on his son, ran to meet him, embraced him, and kissed him. The son admitted his sinfulness and his unworthiness to be called a son, but in his joy at the return of his son, the father called his servants to bring the best robe, a ring for his son s finger, and sandals for his feet. He also called for the fatted calf to be killed for a feast. He exclaimed, For this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found (vv. 20-24).While they were feasting and celebrating the return of the prodigal son, the older son comes and inquires about what is happening. He is told that his brother had returned and that his father has received him with a feast. The older brother becomes angry and will not go in to the feast. The father comes out and pleads with him, but the older son answers by saying he has been faithful to his father for many years and yet the father never gave him the opportunity for such feasting. He expresses his anger and jealousy over his brother who was received in such a manner after he squandered his inheritance (vv. 25-30). The father responds by telling his oldest son, You are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found (vv. 31-32). The parable of the Prodigal Son forms an exact icon of repentance at its different stages. Sin is exile, enslavement to strangers, hunger. Repentance is the return from exile to our true home; it is to receive back our inheritance and freedom in the Father s house. But repentance implies action: I will rise up and go (v. 18). To repent is not just to feel dissatisfied, but to make a decision and to act upon it. In the words of our Lord, we also learn of three things through this parable: the condition of the sinner, the rule of repentance, and the greatness of God s compassion. The reading of this parable follows the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee so that, seeing in the person of the Prodigal Son our own sinful condition, we might come to our senses and return to God through repentance. For those who have fallen into great despair over their sins thinking that there is no forgiveness, this parable offers hope. The Heavenly Father is patiently and lovingly waiting for our return. There is no sin that can overcome His love for us. Finally, this parable offers us insight into the world in which we live. It is a world where the activities of people are disconnected and not ordered toward the fulfillment of God s divine purpose for life. It is a world of incoherent pursuits, of illusory strivings, of craving for foods and drinks that do not satisfy, a world where nothing ultimately makes sense, and a world engulfed in untruth, deceit and sin. It is the exact opposite of the world as created by God and potentially recreated by his Son and Spirit. There is no cure for the evils of our age unless we return to God. The world in which we live is not a normal world, but a wasteland. This is why in the Slavic tradition of the Orthodox Church the reading of Psalm 137 is added to the Matins service for this and the the following two Sundays. This nostalgic lament of the Hebrew exiles states: "By the streams of Babylon we sat and wept as we remembered Zion. On the willows we hung our harps, for how could we sing the Lord s song in a strange land (Psalm 137). Here we can see the challenge of life in this world and the alienation from God that can happen when sin reigns in our lives. As a result of sin in our lives, we lose the joy of communion with God, we defile and lose our spiritual beauty, and we find ourselves far away from our real home, our real life. In true repentance, we realize this, and we express a deep desire to return, to recover what has been lost. On this day the Church reminds us of what we have abandoned and lost, and beckons us to find the desire and power to return. Our Heavenly Father is waiting and ready to receive us with His loving forgiveness and His saving embrace. 8

Coffee Sponsorship It is amazing how a modest offering of pastries and coffee after Liturgy on Sundays can provide the spark for so much fellowship and community feeling! Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Typically, our coffee hours are hosted by Philoptochos and various ministries. But families or groups of friends may consider hosting one as well. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, jello, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup.
