The life of Elder Paisios 1924-1994 Amongst the many Greeks who lived in Farasa, Cappadocia Asia Minor was a pious couple named Eznepidis, who had a son on 25 July 1924. The baby was baptized by Father Arsenios the Cappadocian a few weeks after his birth and was given the name Arsenios whilst foretelling the baby s future life as a monk. In accordance with the Treaty of Lausanne the Greeks were forced to leave Asia Minor, resulting in Father Arsenios guiding his flock of displaced and demoralised families along the 400-mile trek to Greece with the Eznepidis family eventually settling in Konitsa, Epirus, after a few stops along the way. At the age of 84, Father Arsenios reposed forty days after his group settled in Greece, as he had prophesied, leaving as his spiritual heir the infant Arsenios. Since 1970, many apparitions and miracles have occurred near his holy relics, which reside in the Monastery of Souroti. Our father among the saints Arsenios the Cappadocian (1840 1924) was recognized as a saint by the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1986 and His feast day is November 10. Arsenios the younger, grew up in Konitsa and after completing his elementary study to intermediate public school level, he learned the carpentry trade, where he worked until his mandatory military service. During the latter part of World War II and the dangerous civil war which followed, Arsenios served as a radio operator and was noted for his bravery, selfsacrifice and moral righteousness, being discharged in 1949. He had a duty to provide for his unmarried sisters future, which he achieved and was therefore free to pursue his monastic vocation at Mt Athos in 1950. Four years as a novice, Arsenios enriched his spirituality by reading soul-profiting books on the lives of Saints, the Gerontikon and the Ascetical Homilies of St Isaac the Syrian, as well as completing his obediences. Arsenios was tonsured a monk and given the name Averkio at Esphigmenou Monastery; later placing himself under obedience to the Elder Symeon who gave him the Small Schema in 1956 with the new name Paisios. Fr Paisios was asked to spend time in the region of his hometown where he supported the faithful against the proselytism of Protestant groups and in 1962 he visited Sinai, spending two years amongst the Bedouins who benefited spiritually as well as materially from his presence, as he bought them food with the income from the wooden handicraft he carved. Returning to Mt Athos in 1964 Fr Paisios took up residence at the Skete of Iviron before moving to the desert region of Katounakia where he remained for a short time, departing due to ill-health. Part of his lungs was removed in 1966 during which operation Fr Paisios needed a blood transfusion, which blood was provided by a group of novices from the monastery of St John the Theologian in Souroti (just outside Thessaloniki), for which he was very grateful. As a result, his long friendship began and he did whatever he could thereafter, to assist materially and spiritually the young sisterhood to build their monastery. Residing in the monastery of Stavronikita from 1968, Fr Paisios was blessed to be in close contact with the ascetic Elder Tikhon who lived in the Hermitage of the Holy Cross and by whose side he stayed until his repose, serving him selflessly as his disciple. During this period Elder Tikhon clothed Fr Paisios in the Great Schema and according to his wishes, after Elder Tikhon s repose, Elder Paisios remained in his hermitage where he stayed until 1979 when he moved to the hermitage Panagouda belonging to the monastery of Koutloumousiou. The sick, frail and suffering people of God gravitated to Elder Paisios as his fame grew he received them all day long, dedicating the nights to God in prayer, vigil and spiritual struggle, with minimal time for rest of his body and sleep. As a result of his ascetic life and sensitive nature Elder Paisios was increasingly prone to 4

The life of Elder Paisios 1924-1994 sickness initially with respiratory problems, later suffering from a serious hernia, making life very painful. Leaving the Holy Mountain for various periods, mostly due to his illnesses, he would continue to receive pilgrims at the women s monastery of Souroti, despite his ailing health, pain and frailty. Elder Paisios also suffered from haemorrhaging which left him very weak, often falling unconscious. For treatment in Thessaloniki Elder Paisios went on 5 October 1993, believing it was to be only for a short time. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer which required immediate treatment recovery was in hospital after which he transferred to the monastery at Souroti despite his fervent wish to return to his beloved Holy Mountain. For the next six months, despite his failing health, Elder Paisios received people at Souroti, listening to their sorrows, counselling them and providing spiritual guidance - his reputation grew more widely as his bodily suffering intensified. Receiving the Holy Communion for the last time on 11 July, Elder Paisios gave his soul into God s keeping on 12 July 1994 (13 days short of his 70th birthday). According to his wishes, Elder Paisios was buried at the Monastery of St. John the Theologian in Souroti, where the relics of St Arsenios the Cappadocian, his godfather also lie! Living in the modern age and at the same time living in union with God, Elder Paisios confronted the problems of our times with directness and courage. Deeply grounded in wisdom of the ancient Holy Fathers and partaking of their life of holiness and ascesis, he passed on this patristic wisdom in a manner that is down-to-earth and accessible. He was a simple man with few material needs and his teaching powerfully touches the heart, kindling in it the same divine love that abundantly filled the Elder Paisios. Things are very simple, and there is no reason why we should complicate them. If we regard matters in this way, we will feel the Jesus Prayer as a necessity and will not grow weary. We will be able to repeat it many times and our heart will feel a sweet pain, and then Christ Himself will shed His sweet consolation inside our heart. Those who come close to people in pain naturally draw near to God, because God is always by the side of His children who are in pain. Some books of his counsels have already been published and the monastery at Souroti has undertaken to publish the Elder s writings and counsels for the future benefit of all. Some epistles to the abbess and sisters include the following counsels, which can be of inestimable benefit to everyone: Kindness softens and opens up the heart, as oil opens a rusty lock. When someone gives his heart to God, then the mind of this man is also seized by the love of God. He is indifferent towards worldly things and continually thinks about the Heavenly Father and being divinely in love, he glorifies his Creator day and night like an angel. Elder Paisios, perhaps more than any other contemporary elder of our church, captured the minds and hearts of the Greek people within Greece and the diaspora including the Antipodes. 5

The life of Elder Paisios 1924-1994 My pilgrimage to the resting place of Elder Paisios Visiting the place of birth, burial grounds or churches of our Saints, kindles in pilgrims questions about their own mortality and emotions about their role and place in the world they live. On our first family holiday in June 1976 we attended the monastery of Souroti on the outskirts of Thessaloniki for vespers and prayers we were impressed with the melodic chanting of the nuns and pleasantly surprised at the number of young professional women who had chosen to devote their lives to our Lord as nuns at Souroti. Since the mid-1970s, at the invitation of our Primate Archbishop Stylianos, a number of spiritual fathers from Mt Athos visited Australia, usually during the period of Great Lent. In 1977 Elder Paisios came with Father Vasileios, the then Abbot of Stavronikita, visiting most mainland cities to heal the spiritual wounds, preach to the faithful and accept confession. They were in Adelaide on 15/16 March 1977, when our family was humbled, honoured and blessed to provide hospitality in our home to these spiritual fathers from Mt Athos. In the shadows of the Church bearing the name of his godfather, the final resting place of this holy man is very plain with a wooden cross and a kandili. Pilgrims are welcome to pray and light their candles on the grave which has a white plaque with the words: Εδώ τελείωσε η ζωή, Εδώ και η πνοή μου, εδώ το σώμα θα θαφτή θα χαίρη κι η ψυχή μου. Ο Άγιός μου κατοικεί, αυτό είναι τιμή μου. Πιστεύω Αυτός θα λυπηθή την άθλια ψυχή μου. Θα εύχεται στον Λυτρωτή νάχω την Παναγιά μαζί μου. (Μοναχός Παΐσιος Αγιορείτης) It was with the strong memory of our family pilgrimage to Souroti in 1976 and Elder Paisios visit in 1977, that I fervently wanted to pay homage at Elder Paisios final resting place seeking his blessing. On 26 June 2011, with trepidation and much humility I took my relatives to Souroti in order to pray at the place where the relics of Elder Paisios rest. It was a heart-wrenching pilgrimage - there were many people visiting this holy place, individuals and family groups, each with their own problems, thoughts and burdens. The atmosphere was quiet and serene - the pilgrims, with bowed heads and reverence prayed for forgiveness and for spiritual enlightenment. For me it was an emotionally charged pilgrimage, daring to draw on the simplicity, teachings and humility of Elder Paisios, whilst reflecting on my own life, my family, our community and the frailty of humanity. With silent prayers, seeking his blessing and guidance, I left the grave of the simple yet profound Elder Paisios a man who lived and preached in our lifetime! by Presvytera Anna Patsouris 6

ΕΠΤΑΕΤΕΣ ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΟ ΤΟΥ ΜΑΚΑΡΙΣΤΟΥ ΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΥ ΜΑΔΑΓΑΣΚΑΡΗΣ ΚΥΡΟΥ ΝΕΚΤΑΡΙΟΥ Την Κυριακή 11η Σεπτεµβρίου 2011 στον Ιερό µας Ναό ετελέσθηκε το επταετές µνηµόσυνο του αειµνήστου πρώτου Επισκόπου Μαδαγασκάρης ΝΕΚΤΑΡΙΟΥ Κελλή. Ο αείµνηστος Επίσκοπος Νεκτάριος είχε τραγικό θάνατο στις 11 Σεπτεµβρίου 1994 όταν το Ελικόπτερο Σινούκ µε το οποίο µετέβαινε στο Άγιο Ορος µε τον Μακαριώτατο πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής Πέτρο Ζ και άλλους συνοδούς, για αγνώστους λόγους συνετρίβη στη θάλασσα µε αποτέλεσµα να βρουν τραγικό θάνατο όλοι οι συνεπιβαίνοντες σε αυτό. Ο θάνατος του µακαριστού Νεκταρίου δεν τον στέρησε µόνο από την οικογένειά του και σε όλους εµάς εδώ στην Αδελαΐδα που τον είχαµε γνωρίσει, αλλά και στο ποίµνιό του στη Μαδαγασκάρη που υπήρξε πρώτος Επίσκοπός της και εργάστηκε υπεράνθρωπα και ακούραστα για το εκεί Ιεραποστολικό έργο. Adelaide Airport Noise Insulation Program Επειτα από πέντε µηνών συνεχούς εντατικής εργασίας στην Εκκλησία µας για το Αdelaιde Airport Noise Insulation Program φθάσαµε στο τέλος και καλώς εχόντων των πραγµάτων θα λειτουργήσουµε µέσα στον ανακαινισµένο ναό µας την Κυριακή 2 Οκτωβρίου. Οι βροχερές καιρικές συνθήκες της περιόδου καθυστέρησαν τις εργασίες δύο περίπου εβδοµάδες από τον προγραµµατισµένο χρόνο. εν υπάρχει καµιά αµφιβολία ότι τόσο το εσωτερικό όσο και εξωτερικό του Ναού έχει αλλάξει ριζικά. Ευχαριστούµε όλους για την κατανόηση και υποµονή καθ όλη την διάρκεια των εργασιών. 8

Adelaide Airport Noise Insulation Program On 17 May 2011, the Church of Saint George was emptied of its furniture and reverently relocated to the newly fashioned temporary church in the Community hall, so that the renovations could commence for the noise abatement program funded by the Australia Government. Negotiations had commenced for this project a couple of years ago due to the fact that our church building and its small hall were within the flight path to Adelaide Airport. It was suggested that the project would be completed quicker if the company had full access to the building, making it a worksite and closing it off completely (instead of attempting to progress it whilst regular church services were being conducted). Realising the inconvenience and hardship for the Community, the College and the parishioners, the Executive Committee determined the total closure of the Church for 4 months was more desirable than having services in an ongoing live worksite for 10+ months. As weddings and christenings are planned and booked months and years in advance, it became necessary, with the full agreement of those involved, to relocate some of these ceremonies to other Churches. We thank those parishioners involved, for their understanding and co-operation, as well as the other parishes of our Archdiocese for their support. The College community of students, teachers and parents were affected with worksite noises and parking problems, which issues were kept to a minimum, as a result of good planning and prior advice to all involved. The Senior Citizens refrained from having their regular meetings, and the Byzantine Choir was partially affected during this period - we thank them for their support and understanding. The inclement weather, which is beyond our control, has thrown the project off-target by a few weeks, which completion date now appears to be the first week in October. As can be observed through the perimeter fencing, the Church s appearance has improved aesthetically, with minimisation of aeroplane noise having been achieved. The vastly improved Church has reinforced walls and roof structure, can withstand earthquakes, with new electrical and electronic wiring and an upgraded air conditioning system. We are grateful to all our parishioners and visitors to our Church and College, for their support, understanding, patience and co-operation during these four months of renovation. We acknowledge the hard work of the crew, who were very conscientious and with reverence undertook the renovations. We sincerely thank the Australian Government for funding this project. 9

ΕΟΡΤΗ ΤΟΥ ΠΑΤΕΡΑ - FATHER S DAY 4/9/11 Εορτάσθηκε και αυτή τη χρονιά η «Εορτή του Πατέρα Father s Day». Τιμήθηκαν και εφέτος δύο πατέρες ένας ηλικιωμένος ο κ. Σπύρος Παπαεμμανουήλ και ένας νέος ο κ. Αντώνιος Κακάς. Ο π. Διογένης ευχήθηκε σε όλους τους πατέρες χρόνια πολλά και πρόσφερε εκ μέρους της Φιλοπτώχου στους δύο τιμωμένους πατέρες ένα μικρό δώρο, τονίζοντας ότι στο πρόσωπο τους τιμούμε, σεβόμεθα και αγαπάμε όλους τους πατέρες για τους κόπους, τις φροντίδες, τις θυσίες και την προσφορά τους στην οικογένεια και κοινωνία. CELEBRATION OF FATHER S DAY 4/9/11 It is said that the father is the head of the family and the mother is the neck together they bring to the world their offspring, nurture and guide them to adulthood. They are the first role models for their children and it is from them that children learn about life and their place within the wider community. On Sunday 4th September 2011, red carnations were presented to each father upon entry into the church, whilst two fathers (an elder and a younger) were honoured as representatives of all the fathers in the congregation. Mr Spyros Papaemmanouel from Rhodes is in the twilight years of his life - he has raised four sons and has many grandchildren. For many years he has made the crosses distributed on Palm Sunday at Saint George Church, for which we grateful. Mr Anthony Cacas is a lawyer with one child, whose Kastelorizean grandmother, Arhondissa Maria Cacas was a financial supporter of our Church, choosing the name St George in 1960. Very Rev Diogenis Patsouris presented a small gift to the elder Spyros and the younger Anthony, wishing them good health and prosperity with their families, whilst acknowledging and applauding the important role undertaken by all the fathers. LAUNCH OF THE SAINT GEORGE COLLEGE OLD SCHOLARS ALUMNI on 2nd September 2011 Saint George College is in its 28th year of operation with many graduates progressing through tertiary education to their chosen profession and careers. There was merriment and glees of recognition as old scholars rekindled friendships and acquaintances. It was amazing how quickly the intervening years faded and business cards were exchanged! Mr Peter Piliouros, lawyer and Mr Bill Gonis Physiotherapist are old scholars of our College and are members of the Board of Governors, which manages the operations of Saint George College. The creation of an Old Scholars Association Alumni is the next step within the College s Strategic Plan. Peter and Bill have undertaken a leading role in the development of the Old Scholars Association since becoming members of the Board in 2009. In the presence of over 70 invited old scholars, Peter and Bill outlined the purpose and role of the Alumni. The Principal, Mr George Panagopoulos gave a detailed overview of the history of the College to date, the growth and its current enrolment profile. He advised on building projects in progress and highlighted the importance of the Old Scholars to the future plans. He asked graduates to advise ex-scholars of the establishment of the Alumni and to keep abreast of developments through internet, where membership enrolment forms are available. In concluding the launch, Very Rev Diogenis Patsouris was moved when reflecting on his personal memories of the initial hardships 30 years ago, whilst glowing in his comments about the current position of the College. He fervently invited those present to make every effort to get involved with Peter and Bill in the establishment of the Organising Committee; asking old scholars to promote in a positive way and to re-connect with your College, thereby playing a pivotal role in its future. Father Diogenis finished by saying You are the fruit of Saint George College, you are its ambassadors. The College s continued success rests in your hands as the future leaders of this Community you are invited to take action now! 12

SAINT GEORGE COLLEGE SPORTS DAY 15/9/2011 On Thursday 15th September 2011, Santos Stadium was ablaze in red, blue, yellow and green with students anxious to win their specific sporting endeavour aiming for their team to achieve the coveted Trophy. In the presence of a large number of excited and proud parents and grandparents, under glorious 24C+ sunshine, the teachers marshalled the athletes into their organised events. With much enthusiasm, the students were challenged to beat their own best records, as well as those of the other teams in the friendly annual athletic competitions. The day ultimately belonged to the blues Pella Alexander the Great team excelled; followed by Sparta with Olympia third and then Athens. Because it was also the national RU OK? day students were reminded to be vigilant, aware of people around them and to provide support and comfort wherever possible. ΙΕΘΝΕΙΣ ΕΞΕΤΑΣΕΙΣ ΠΙΣΤΟΠΟΙΗΤΙΚΟΥ ΕΛΛΗΝΟΜΑΘΕΙΑΣ Στις 10 και 11 Μαΐου διενεργήθηκαν εξετάσεις για το «Πιστοποιητικό Ελληνοµάθειας» που γίνονται κάθε χρόνο από το Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας του Υπουργείου Παιδείας της Ελλάδας. Οι µαθητές διαγωνίστηκαν σε τέσσερις γνωστικούς τοµείς: στην κατανόηση του γραπτού λόγου, στην κατανόηση του προφορικού λόγου, στην παραγωγή του γραπτού λόγου και στην παραγωγή του προφορικού λόγου. Τους συγχαίρουµε και τους ευχόµαστε άριστα αποτελέσµατα στις εισιτήριες εξετάσεις στο πανεπιστήµιο. Οι µαθητές είναι ο Ζήσης Βαγγέλης, η Μπίρη Ελένη, η Σιάπαντα Αθηνά, η Χαµπή Κυδωνία και η Αποστόλου Σταυρούλα. Άριστα αποτελέσµατα είχε στις ίδιες εξετάσεις που έλαβε µέρος και δάσκαλος του Κολλεγίου µας Γιάννης Σαριδάκης. Συγχαίρουµε όλα τα παιδιά µας και είµαστε πολύ υπερήφανοι γι αυτά.
