SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 12307 S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL 60463 WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Catechism 101 Last month s article mentioned how our community is primarily a family of worship. Every activity, ministry, and function of our parish emanates from a prayerful liturgical life. As we begin the new ecclesiastical year, we are making plans for our schools, our dinner dances, our various fundraisers, youth activities, athletics, Metropolis events, and much more. At the center of it all is our worship life. Everything begins with us worshipping our loving Lord and remembering our saints. Everything leads to us coming together as God s family, to sharing in the heavenly banquet of Holy Communion, to giving thanks to God for all His blessings, to entreating Him for His mercy and continued goodness upon us all. Likewise, our worship ministry should be at the center of our life in general. Our family life, our work, our activities and hobbies, should be placed in the context of our relationship with God. With this in mind, every Sunday should be kept as the Lord s Day. As Orthodox Christians, we should stand up to the demands from work, sports, even 97th Annual Community Dinner Dance Sunday, October 19th, 2014

Altar Boys John Angelos... Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. friends and family, that keep us from making this day truly the Lord s Day. A fellow priest wrote recently that what the Roman persecutions and four hundred years of Ottoman occupation failed to accomplish, has been achieved today by Sunday morning sports and other activities. Fathers, mothers, children, the young and the old alike should honor the Lord s Day. We are Orthodox not by rite but by belonging to our Orthodox family, spending time together in worship, sharing in the Lord s banquet, and keeping our values. Answering the call to the Lord s house, to the Lord s table, on the Lord s day is what qualifies to live as the Lord s family. While the Lord s day is so central to our Orthodox liturgical life, we know that our worship is not limited to the first day of the week. Our calendar of feasts and services extends beyond Sunday with many opportunities to answer the call to prayer. In particular, at Saint Spyridon s we celebrate numerous feast day liturgies along with Paraklesis every Monday night and Vespers every Saturday night. It is understandable that a secular work and school environment prevents us from fully celebrating weekday feasts and evening services. However, there is a way that we may still give thanks to God together as a parish family. The key is being aware of the liturgical calendar. Look to the weekly bulletin, the monthly Voice, the parish Google Calendar, and be aware of when services take place. Then, wherever you may be, at work, school, or on the road, offer a prayer at the time that the church service is scheduled to begin. For example, on Monday, September 8 th, we will celebrate the Nativity of the Theotokos. We will begin Orthros at 8am. At that time, make the sign of the cross and remember what we are celebrating. In that way, it will be as if you were present in the church yourself. There is a story that a monk described to his elder about his visions of the Panagia. He would see her occasionally coming out to offer incense within his monastic congregation. The Holy Mother would cense the monks in their seats, but then she would skip some of the brothers while censing some of the empty seats. The Virgin explained to the monk that some of the brothers who were physically present were absent minded and therefore she skipped them. Some of the brothers who were missing and whose seats were empty, were present in her eyes because of their prayers and their true desire to be present, and therefore she was censing them as if they were there. Our worship life brings together heaven and earth, men and angels, the living and the dead, all come to be present when that is our true desire. It is understandable and unfortunate that our secular life often keeps us from physically being present in our house of worship. For the Lord s Day we should fight for our right to come together as a family to our parish home. On every other day, we can direct our spirit, our heart and desire to the liturgical event of the day, so we may be filled with the joy of the feast and the company of one another as God s family in celebration. Then, we shall truly be a community of worship, live up to the sacrifices of our predecessors, and challenge with hope and faith the generations to come. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos

All of these icons have already received partial donations but we are looking to have them fully pledged by the time they installed in August 2015. For more information on the iconography project please consult the brochures available at church or contact Fr. Tilemahos. FESTIVAL 2014 We wish to thank everyone who helped at this year's festival. As you can see from the Preliminary results in the comparative table below our church had a successful festival. Although profit was lower than last year it was above our average. Raffle revenue decreased from the prior year contributing to the decrease in raffle Profit. Profit from Fest Operations also decreased primary due to higher rides expense and higher Equipment rental expense. More detail to Festival Results is available to any Steward who Contacts the Church Office. St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 17
