SAINTS AND FEASTS Ephraim the Syrian - January 28 Saint Ephraim was born in Nisibis of Mesopotamia some time about the year 306, and in his youth was the disciple of Saint James, Bishop of Nisibis, one of the 318 Fathers at the First Ecumenical Council. Ephraim lived in Nisibis, practicing a severe ascetical life and increasing in holiness, until 363, the year in which Julian the Apostate was slain in his war against the Persians, and his successor Jovian surrendered Nisibis to them. Ephraim then made his dwelling in Edessa, where he found many heresies to do battle with. He waged an especial war against Bardaisan; this gnostic had written many hymns propagating his errors, which by their sweet melodies became popular and enticed souls away from the truth. Saint Ephraim, having received from God a singular gift of eloquence, turned Bardaisan's own weapon against him, and wrote a multitude of hymns to be chanted by choirs of women, which set forth the true doctrines, refuted heretical error, and praised the contests of the Martyrs. Of the multitude of sermons, commentaries, and hymns that Saint Ephraim wrote, many were translated into Greek in his own lifetime. Sozomen says that Ephraim "Surpassed the most approved writers of Greece," observing that the Greek writings, when translated into other tongues, lose most of their original beauty, but Ephraim's works "are no less admired when read in Greek than when read in Syriac" (Eccl. Hist., Book 111, 16). Saint Ephraim was ordained deacon, some say by Saint Basil the Great, whom Sozomen said "was a great admirer of Ephraim, and was astonished at his erudition." Saint Ephraim was the first to make the poetic expression of hymnody and song a vehicle of Orthodox theological teachings, constituting it an integral part of the Church's worship; he may rightly be called the first and greatest hymnographer of the Church, who set the pattern for these who followed him, especially Saint Romanos the Melodist. Because of this he is called the "Harp of the Holy Spirit." Jerome says that his writings were read in some churches after the reading of the Scriptures, and adds that once he read a Greek translation of one of Ephraim's works, "and recognized, even in translation, the incisive power of his lofty genius" (De vir. ill., ch. CXV). Shortly before the end of his life, a famine broke out in Edessa, and Saint Ephraim left his cell to rebuke the rich for not sharing their goods with the poor. The rich answered that they knew no one to whom they could entrust their goods. Ephraim asked them, "What do you think of me?" When they confessed their reverence for him, he offered to distribute their alms, to which they agreed. He himself cared with his own hands for many of the sick from the famine, and so crowned his life with mercy and love for neighbor. Saint Ephraim reposed in peace, according to some in the year 373, according to others, 379. Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone With the rivers of your tears, you have made the barren desert fertile. Through sighs of sorrow from deep within you, your labors have borne fruit a hundred-fold. By your miracles you have become a light, shining upon the world. GIVING YOUR LIFE TO CHRIST Sunday of Zacchaeus Do you know you need Christ? Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10) was searching for something - he climbed a tree to get above the crowd to see Jesus. He knew something was missing in his life. He knew he needed Jesus. Do you know? Like Zacchaeus, there s something bothering us and weighing on our conscience. First, there s our moral conscience. Zacchaeus method of collecting taxes was bothering him. He knew something was wrong. What s on your moral conscience? Maybe you re not treating your friends and family the way you should. Maybe you re not being true to your spouse. Maybe you re not conducting your business the best way. And then there s an emptiness conscience. Is this all there is to life? Many people wonder: they are married, nice job, beautiful home, etc yet still not happy why? Friends, something is stirring in our conscience. It s because we all need Christ in our lives. We are helpless and hopeless without Him. I went to see a movie recently with my family. And all the previews were about end of the world themes. My young son whispered over to me, Dad, what s up with all this post-apocalyptic stuff. (before answering, I jokingly said, first of all, when did you start using five syllable words in your everyday language? ) But I think it reflects the pulse of many people today: there s no hope, no future. The world is going to end. There s a sense of despair and hopelessness because there s no faith, no Jesus in their lives. Now, the crowd was keeping Zacchaeus from getting close to and seeing Jesus. It s the same today. What represents the crowd in your life keeping you from Christ? Is it your over busy schedule. Is it work. Is it influence of friends, politics, media. What s crowding out Christ from your life? And so to overcome the crowd Zacchaeus did something crazy. He climbed up that tree he made that effort toward Christ and that changed everything! I m going to ask you to do something crazy right now. Rather, something that may only seem crazy in this modern, secular sophisticated culture). I m going to ask you to make that effort toward Christ and truly give your life to Him. That s what the Church asks you, and that s what Jesus yearns for. You see, we all have that moral conscience and that emptiness conscience. We all know something s missing. It doesn t matter how wealthy, well educated or successful we are. I m going to ask you to do something crazy, and invite Jesus Christ into your heart and make Him the center of your life. You say, why? Because, that s how we re supposed to live. We are called to be connected to Christ. That s what being human means, and that s why we were created. And that is only what will give our life purpose and true meaning. Will you do that today. You say what does truly giving my life to Christ mean? It means, like Zacchaeus did, realizing that we are sinners that we need His forgiveness. It means being truly sorry for our sins and receiving His love and renewal in your life. Then it means placing Christ first : reading the Bible coming to Church staying connected to Christ through prayer, the Sacraments, and through friends in the faith - and making the effort to keep that relationship with Him alive. Beloved, the Church keeps knocking on the door of our hearts every Sunday Liturgy with that same message. giving our lives to Christ: Remembering our most holy, pure blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, with all the Saints let us commit ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ, our God. Do it today. Give your whole life over to Him. Jesus Christ is a life altering experience. He can completely change you and fill you with peace, joy and happiness. Therefore, the tax savings for donating rather than selling the stock would be $1,500 (10,000 x 15%). In addition, you can claim a charitable deduction of the market value of the donated shares -- the full $20,000 -- as a charitable donation deduction. If you are in the 25 percent federal tax bracket, this could generate another $5,000 (20,000 x 25%) in tax savings. This brings your total tax savings to $6,500. If you are in a higher tax bracket, your donation deduction will be even more. Also consider this: you are giving a gift of $20,000 which is two times what it originally cost you. So as you can see your tax benefits from making a donation of appreciated stock versus cutting a check can be substantial. But be careful here: this will not work if the stock has NOT been held for more than a year. So, if you are considering the donation of appreciated stock, you need to make sure that the shares have been held for more than one year.
