Nevertheless, the accession to the EU apparently turns their concerns to more practical and everyday issues of interaction between the two communities (Greek and Turkish), taking into account the status quo. As a result, instead of promoting the fraternization of Greek and Turkish Cypriots, concerns arise regarding the standard of living of the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. 3 2:45 Α. Χρίστου: -Σ ό,τι αφορά γενικά τις επαγγελµατικές ανησυχίες των Κυπρίων, πιστεύω ότι δε θα έχουµε αυτήν την εισροή Ευρωπαίων επαγγελµατιών στην Κύπρο. Ούτε γιατρών, ούτε δικηγόρων, ούτε ξεναγών, ούτε µηχανικών. Αυτό δεν έχει συµβεί σε καµιά χώρα. Η τάση είναι αντίθετα: Να πηγαίνουµε εµείς προς τις χώρες που προσφέρουν καλύτερες συνθήκες απασχόλησης, ψηλότερους µισθούς και καλύτερες προοπτικές ανέλιξης. Σε σχέση µε τους Τουρκοκυπρίους... Ναι, ο Τουρκοκύπριος, ο οποίος είναι πολίτης πλέον της Ε.Ε., µπορεί να έρθει να εργαστεί στις ελεύθερες περιοχές. Αυτό όµως που ίσως υπονοείτε µε την ερώτηση, αν θα µπορεί να συνοδεύει τουρίστες στις ελεύθερες περιοχές ή εµείς αν θα µπορούµε να συνοδεύουµε τουρίστες στις κατεχόµενες περιοχές, θεωρητικά, αυτό το πράµα δεν απαγορεύεται. Όµως δεν το βλέπω να συµβαίνει τόσο εύκολα, όσο το λέµε τώρα µεταξύ µας. 3:58 Καταστηµατάρχης: -Οι τουρίστες! Άµα ανοίξουµε την Πράσινη Γραµµή, που την ανοίξαµε, και πάσι ούλλοι ποτζιεί, εµάς; Άµα πουλούν ποτζιεί µια λίρα, τζι εµείς θέλουµε τρεις λίρες, διότι το κόστος ζωής µας εν πιο ακριβό, σηµαίνει κλείουν µας τα µαγαζιά µας! 4:16 Π. ηµητρίου: -Όποια λογική κι αν βάλει ένας κάτω για να τετραγωνίσει αυτόν τον κύκλο θα δυσκολευτεί. Και... σίγουρα, εκείνος ο οποίος δεν έχει τις υποχρεώσεις που επιβάλλει η Ε.Ε. αλλά απολαµβάνει των δικαιωµάτων και των πλεονεκτηµάτων, προκαλεί εκείνον, ο οποίος, πέρα από τα δικαιώµατα, έχει και τις υποχρεώσεις. 4:44 Καταστηµατάρχης: -Γιατί εν ήρτασιν να πούσιν, κύριοι, αφού επιτρέψαµε τους τζιείνους τζιαι πάσιν ποτζιεί τζιαι εν πιο φτηνά τα πράµατα, να σας επιδοτούµε τζιαι εσάς τους µιτσιούς, για να σταθείτε; Αποτέλεσµα, ο τουρίστας που ρκετουν τζι έπιανε χρυσάφι που δαµαί πιάνει ποτζιεί... 5:03 Α. Χρίστου: -Η αγορά θα κινηθεί µε τους δικούς της νόµους, κατά τη γνώµη µου, και αυτό που θα συµβεί, είναι ότι στην Τουρκοκυπριακή Κοινότητα και οι µισθοί θ ανέβουν και οι τιµές θα προσαρµοστούν. Θα υπάρξει µία περίοδος που πιθανόν να υπάρχουν αυτές οι διαφορές του λετε. Υπάρχουν σχέδια για τις µικρές επιχειρήσεις και τώρα σύντοµα θα ιδρυθεί και µία ειδική υπηρεσία στο Υπ. Εµπορίου γι αυτό το σκοπό, όµως θα πω µία προσωπική άποψη ότι, στο βαθµό που θ αυξάνονται οι τουρίστες που θα έρχονται στην Κύπρο και στις κατεχόµενες περιοχές, όλοι θα επωφελούµαστε. 3

4 5:41 Π. ηµητρίου: -Ο Κύπριος πολίτης πρέπει να καταλάβει ότι πρέπει να λύσουµε το Κυπριακό πρόβληµα για να λύσουµε κι αυτά τα επιµέρους προβλήµατα που έχουν σχέση και µε τον ανταγωνισµό, γιατί όταν δεν έχει υποχρέωση ο Τούρκος παραγωγός παρόµοια µ αυτήν που έχει ο Κύπριος πολίτης που ζει στον, υπό έλεγχο της Κυπριακής ηµοκρατίας χώρο, ε τότε, οπωσδήποτε, ανταγωνιστικά, θα ευρίσκεται σε πλεονεκτική θέση. 6:19 Καταστηµατάρχης: -Να προσπαθήσουν να µην καταστρέψουν τον Ελληνικό τοµέα αυτοί οι Ευρωβουλευτές που να βάλουµε, για να στήσουν τον Τουρκοκυπριακό τοµέα... 6:26 Π. ηµητρίου: -Χρειάζεται να είµαστε προσεκτικοί ώστε να µη δηµιουργήσουµε την εντύπωση ότι εµείς, που σεβόµαστε το Ευρωπαϊκό Κεκτηµένο, εφαρµόζουµε διακρίσεις εις βάρος οποιουδήποτε πολίτη, είτε αυτός είναι Τουρκοκύπριος είτε Ελληνοκύπριος. 7:04 Ερώτηση: -Θέλω να µάθω τα δικαιώµατα των Τουρκοκυπρίων στις ελεύθερες περιοχές, όσον αφορά τις περιουσίες, τις δικές τους τις περιουσίες. Κι αν... που θ αποταθούν για τις αποζηµιώσεις τους, αν δικαιούνται ή αν δε δικαιούνται. 7:18 Α. Χρίστου: -Επειδή δεν έχουµε λύση του Κυπριακού προβλήµατος, οι περιουσίες θα συνεχίσουν να τυγχάνουν αξιοποίησης από τους πρόσφυγες οι οποίοι τις χρησιµοποιούν. Ο Τουρκοκύπριος µπορεί να ζητήσει είτε τη γη του είτε αποζηµιώσεις αν έχουµε λύση, ή αν έρθει να εγκατασταθεί µόνιµα στις ελεύθερες περιοχές. Όµως, σε τέτοια περίπτωση, εµείς φροντίζουµε να του δώσουµε άλλες διεξόδους, άλλη γη, άλλο σπίτι, και να µην ξεσπιτώσουµε κανένα πρόσφυγα. 8:00 Π. ηµητρίου: -Χρειάζεται λίγη κατανόηση και υποµονή και να µη βλέπουµε απλώς το δέντρο και να χάνουµε το δάσος. Και το δέντρο µπορεί να είναι τα µικροπροβλήµατα που υπάρχουν, αλλά το δάσος πρέπει να είναι πάντοτε στο νου µας, το ότι η Κύπρος πρέπει να επανενωθεί, ώστε να µπορέσουν και Ελληνοκύπριοι και Τουρκοκύπριοι να ζήσουν ειρηνικά, απολαµβάνοντας εξίσου τα ευεργετήµατα που προσφέρει η Ε.Ε. 4

Demetriou: -Based on the Treaty of Accession, we are obligated to apply the Community Acquis in the territory under the control of the lawful government of the Republic of Cyprus. An inhibition of that applies to the territories under the control of the Turkish occupational forces, until such time as the Cyprus issue is resolved. 1:42 Citizen: -What will change for the Cyprus issue and the divided Cyprus after our accession to Europe? Please be specific 1:51 P. Demetriou: -I must say that the European Parliament will certainly not give more time beyond a discussion so as to legislate anything to do with the particular issue of the movement of products, services and persons within the specific conditions of partition existing in Cyprus. 2:13 Citizen: -One of the prevailing issues, I believe, in people s minds is everyday life and the political problem of Cyprus. 2:34 Question: -I work as a guide. I would like to know, will we be able to go to the occupied areas for guided tours? Will the Turkish Cypriots come to this side on guided tours? Will the tourist guides be European? These questions are most prominent in our minds. 2:45 A. Christou: -As regards the professional concerns of Cypriots, it is my belief that there will not be an influx of European professionals in Cyprus - neither doctors, nor lawyers, nor guides, nor mechanics. This has not happened in any country. There is, however, an opposite trend: for us to go to the countries offering better employment conditions, higher salaries and better prospects for advancement. As regards the Turkish Cypriots Yes, the Turkish Cypriot citizens of the EU can come to work in the free areas. What your question might be implying, however, is whether they will be able to accompany tourists in the free areas or whether we will be able to accompany tourists to the occupied areas. Theoretically, this is not prohibited. On the other hand, I don t see it happening easily. 5

6 3: 58 Shop Owner: -The tourists! What will happen if we open the Green Line? which we have, and all the tourists go to the other side? What will happen to us? If on the other side they charge one pound for something and we charge three, because we have a higher cost of life, this will mean that we will have to close down our shops! 4:16 P. Demetriou: -Whatever logic we use trying to square this circle, we will have their job cut out for us! And, certainly, those who are not burdened with the obligations imposed by the EU but at the same time enjoy all the rights and privileges provoke those who, beyond rights, have obligations as well. 4:44: Shop owner: -Why did they not come and say, Gentlemen, since we allowed people to go to the other side where everything is cheaper, we will subsidize you small businessmen, so as to be able to continue standing on your feet? With the result being that the tourists, who used to buy their gold from here, now are buying it from the other side 5:03 A. Christou: - In my opinion, the market will move governed by its own laws, and what will happen is that salaries will rise and prices will be adjusted in the Turkish Cypriot community as well. There will be a transitional period in which these differences you talked about will exist. There are plans regarding small businesses. Soon, a special department in the Ministry of Trade will be established for this purpose. I will give you my personal view, though, which is that we will all benefit from the increase of tourism coming to Cyprus even when visiting the occupied areas. 5:41 P. Demetriou: -The citizens of Cyprus must realize that we must resolve the Cyprus problem so as to be able to resolve these particular problems that regard competition; because, if the Turkish growers do not have the same obligations as the Cypriot citizens living in the territory, which falls under the control of the Republic of Cyprus, then certainly, antagonistically, they will find themselves in an advantageous position. 6:19 Shop Owner: -The members of the European Parliament that we ourselves elected, should try not to destroy the Greek Cypriot side so as to bolster the Turkish Cypriot side 6

Demetriou: -We have to be very careful so as not to give the impression that we, the persons that respect the acquis Communautaire, discriminate against any citizen, either Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot. 7:04 Question: -I would like to be informed of the rights of the Turkish Cypriots in the free areas, as regards property, their own property. And where will they apply to for compensation and whether they are entitled to compensation or not. 7:18 A. Christou: -Because the Cyprus Problem is not yet resolved, the properties will continue to be utilized by the refugees using them. The Turkish Cypriot owners may ask for either their land back or for compensation, in the event of a solution (to the Cyprus Problem), or in the event of taking up permanent residence in the free areas. However, in such cases, we offer them alternatives: some other piece of land, some other residence, so as not to evict any refugees. 8:00 P. Demetriou: -We must show some understanding and a degree of patience; we should not lose the forest for the trees. This tree might be the small problems existing, the forest, however must be always on our mind, the fact that Cyprus can be re-united, so that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots may live in peace, equally enjoying the benefits offered by the EU. 7
