Demetrios Kounavis Parish Priest Sunday, May 29, 2016 Sunday of the Samaritan Woman St. Theodosia, Virgin-Martyr of Constantinople The Righteous Martyr Theodosia, having Constantinople as her homeland, struggled in asceticism in her own convent, which was located in that same imperial city. Filled with zeal for the veneration of the holy icons, she withstood Emperor Leo the Isaurian's impious command that the icons be destroyed. She received the martyr's crown when a soldier of the imperial guard plunged a ram's horn through her throat, about the year 717. Apolytikion of Virgin Martyr Theodosia of Constantinople in the Fourth Tone O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.

2 The Feast of Saint Nina of Georgia on June 1st On June 1, the Orthodox Church of Georgia marks the day of the entrance of St. Nina (also known as Nino), Equal to the Apostles, to Georgia. St. Nina was born in the small town of Colastri, in the Roman province of Cappadocia. She was the only child of the famous Roman general Zabulon. On her father's side, Nina was related to St. George the Great Martyr and on her mother's, to the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Houbnal I. St. Nina had a vision where the Virgin Mary gave her a Grapevine Cross and told her to preach in Iberia, the ancient name for Georgia. On her way to Iberia, passing through Anatolia into the Caucasus, Nina managed to convert some villages to Christianity in Northern Anatolia and Armenia. Saint Nina reached the borders of the ancient Georgian Kingdom of Iberia in about 323 A.D. There, she placed a Christian Cross in the small town of Akhalkalaki and started preaching the Christian faith in Urbnis and finally reaching Mtskheta (the capital of Iberia). The Iberian King Mirian III and his nation worshipped the syncretic gods of Armazi and Zaden. However, after Nina s preaching and miracles, Queen Nana, followed by King Mirian and the whole nation were converted to Christianity. In 326 A.D. King Mirian made Christianity as the official state religion of his kingdom. The Georgian Orthodox Church marks St. Nina's feastday twice a year: on June 1 - the Entrance of St. Nina to Georgia and on January 27 the day of her passing away. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!! 3 One of the most ancient cities of the Promised Land was Shechem, also called Sikima, located at the foot of Mount Gerazim. There the Israelites had heard the blessings in the days of Moses and Jesus of Navi. Near to this town, Jacob, who had come from Mesopotamia in the nineteenth century before Christ, bought a piece of land where there was a well. This well, preserved even until the time of Christ, was known as Jacob's Well. Later, before he died in Egypt, he left that piece of land as a special inheritance to his son Joseph (Gen. 49:22). This town, before it was taken into possession by Samaria, was also the leading city of the kingdom of the ten tribes. In the time of the Romans it was called Neapolis, and at present Nablus. It was the first city in Canaan visited by the Patriarch Abraham. Here also, Jesus of Navi (Joshua) addressed the tribes of Israel for the last time. Almost three hundred years later, all Israel assembled there to make Roboam (Rehoboam) king. When our Lord Jesus Christ, then, came at midday to this city, which is also called Sychar (John 4:5), He was wearied from the journey and the heat, and He sat down at this well. After a little while the Samaritan woman mentioned in today's Gospel passage came to draw water. As she conversed at some length with the Lord and heard from Him secret things concerning herself, she believed in Him; through her many other Samaritans also believed. Concerning the Samaritans we know the following: In the year 721 before Christ, Salmanasar (Shalmaneser), King of the Assyrians, took the ten tribes of the kingdom of Israel into captivity, and relocated all these people to Babylon and the land of the Medes. From there he gathered various nations and sent them to Samaria. These nations had been idolaters from before. Although they were later instructed in the Jewish faith and believed in the one God, they worshipped the idols also. Furthermore, they accepted only the Pentateuch of Moses, and rejected the other books of Holy Scripture. Nonetheless, they thought themselves to be descendants of Abraham and Jacob. Therefore, the pious Jews named these Judaizing and idolatrous peoples Samaritans, since they lived in Samaria, the former leading city of the Israelites, as well as in the other towns thereabout. The Jews rejected them as heathen and foreigners, and had no communion with them at all, as the Samaritan woman observed, "the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans" (John 4:9). Therefore, the name Samaritan is used derisively many times in the Gospel narrations. After the Ascension of the Lord, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the woman of Samaria was baptized by the holy Apostles and became a great preacher and Martyr of Christ; she was called Photine, and her feast is kept on February 26.

4 ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΟ... "Ας γυμναζόμαστε για τον καιρό του μαρτυρίου. Περιφρόνησαν εκείνοι τη ζωή τους, περιφρόνησε συ τίς αμαρτωλές άπολαύοεις. Έριξαν εκείνοι τα σώματα τους στη φωτιά" ρίξε εσύ χρήματα στα χέρια των φτωχών. Πάτησαν εκείνοι πάνω σε αναμμένα κάρβουνα, σβήσε εσύ της κακής επιθυμίας τη φλόγα... Όπως οι Μάρτυρες και συ μην κοιτάς τα παρόντα δυσάρεστα, αλλά τα μέλλοντα ευχάριστα. Όχι τα δεινά πού σε πιέζουν, αλλά τα αγαθά πού ελπίζουμε να απολαύσουμε. Όχι τα παθήματα, αλλά τα βραβεία. Όχι τους κόπους, αλλά τα στεφάνια. Όχι τους ίδρωτες, αλλά τίς αμοιβές. Όχι τους πόνους, άλλα τίς ανταποδόσεις. Όχι τη φωτιά πού καίει, αλλά τη μέλλουσα βασιλεία. Όχι τους γύρω δήμιους, αλλά το στεφανοθέτη Χριστό. Ιερού Χρυσοστόμου ''Έγκώμιον εις τους Αγίους Παντας'' Το κορμί σας ας το καύσουν, ας το τηγανίσουν τα πράγματα σας ας σας τα πάρουν μη σας μέλλει" δώσατε τα δεν είναι ιδικά σας. Ψυχή και Χριστός σας χρειάζονται. Αυτά τα δύο όλος ό κόσμος να πέσει δεν ημπορεί να σας τα πάρει, εκτός και τα δώσετε με το θέλημα σας». Άγιος Κοσμάς ό Αιτωλός Μη νομίζεις ότι μάρτυρες είναι εκείνοι μόνο πού τους έκοψαν το κεφάλι μία φορά, επειδή δεν αρνήθηκαν το Χριστό. Είναι και άλλοι, πού δεν αρνούνται την αρετή, την υπομονή. Οι πρώτοι μία φοράν έμαρτύρησαν, ενώ οι δεύτεροι κάθε λίγο μαρτυρούν. «Έλογίσθημεν ως πρόβατα σφαγής. Ένεκα σου θανατούμεθα όλην την ήμέραν» (Ρωμ. η' 36), λέει ή θεία Γραφή. Είναι οι αναίμακτοι μάρτυρες, τη προαιρέσει μάρτυρες. Οι αφανείς μάρτυρες στον κόσμο, αλλά φανεροί στο Θεό. Από το βιβλίο «Γέροντας Έφραίμ Κατουνακιώτης» «Είναι φανερό ότι δεν υπάρχει εκείνος πού να μπορεί να τρομοκρατήσει και να υποδουλώσει εμάς, πού σε όλη τη γη έχουμε πιστέψει στον Ιησού. Ενώ βέβαια αποκεφαλιζόμαστε και σταυρωνόμαστε και ριχνόμαστε στα θηρία, στις φυλακές, στη φωτιά και σ' όλα τα άλλα βασανιστήρια, είναι φανερό ότι δεν παύουμε να διακηρύττουμε με θάρρος την πίστη μας" αλλά όσο πιο πολλά άπ' αυτά τα άνοσιουργήματα συμβαίνουν, τόσο πιο πολλοί άλλοι γίνονται πιστοί και θεοσεβείς με τη βοήθεια του Ιησού. Όπως ή κληματαριά, από την οποία θα κόψει κανείς τα κλαδιά πού έκαμαν καρπό, ξαναβλαστάνει και βγάζει άλλα κλαδιά θαλερά και καρποφόρα, το ίδιο γίνεται και σ' εμάς. Γιατί το αμπέλι πού φύτεψε ό Θεός και Σωτήρας Χριστός είναι ό λαός Του»,

5 Ιουστίνου Φολοσόφου και Μάρτυρος προς Μάρκον Αυρήλιον Ό ποιητής Χρηστοβασίλης έγραφε για έναν Εθνομάρτυρα από τους πρόσφατους: «Χαρά στο Θάνατο Σου. Δεν είναι θάνατος αυτός, είναι ζωή καθάρια, τέτοιος θάνατος λογιέται αθανασία». Μας δίδαξαν στα σχολεία ότι έχουμε πέντε μόνο αισθήσεις. Άπέκρυψαν την αίσθηση την πολύ πιο σπουδαία της ψυχης. Έτσι δημιουργήσαμε μια γενιά αισθησιακή, όπου λειτουργούν μόνο οι σωματικές αισθήσεις. Υποτιμάμε τον πνευματικό κόσμο. Τη φωνή των μαρτύρων και των αγίων. "Αλλου είδους αυτιά όμως χρειάζονται για να την ακούσουν. Ό ίδιος ό Κύριος μας, το επισήμανε: «ό έχων ώτα άκούειν, άκουέτω». Και ή φωνή τους αυτή μας είναι τόσο αναγκαία. Επειδή μας υπενθυμίζει καθήκοντα λησμονημένα, Ότι χωρίς θυσίες τίποτε δεν μπορεί να ευημερήσει. Οι άγιοι και οι μάρτυρες για τη θυσία τους ζητάνε ως αντάλλαγμα μιμητές ανάμεσα μας. Όχι για να χύσουμε άσκοπα το αίμα μας, τα πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει από εκείνη την εποχή. Ζητούν από τον καθένα μας να υποστηρίζει την αλήθεια, να ζει την αλήθεια, να διακηρύττει την αλήθεια προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις. Κάθε πιστός να γίνει μάρτυρας με το παράδειγμα του, κυρίως όμως με τα έργα του. Ό τόπος μας πολλά ακόμη χρειάζεται. Κυρίως όμως χρειάζεται νέους ανθρώπους, αυθεντικούς, όχι κίβδηλους και νοθευμένους. Να θέτουν σέί πράξη και έργα ό,τι πιστεύουν. Να ζουν όπως προσεύχονται και να προσεύχονται όπως ζουν. Με τέτοιο βίωμα συνέπειας και πιστότητας μπορούμε να αναδειχθούμε μάρτυρες Μητρ. Σηλυβρίας,Αιμιλιανού Τιμιάδου Μοϋλεγε προχτές ένας χαριτωμένα οργισμένος νεαρός. - Μιλάτε για μάρτυρες. Μα μόνο οι χριστιανοί έχουν; Τί είναι αυτοί πού σφαγιάζονται σ' όλο τον κόσμο για άλλες ιδέες; Πρέπει να ομολογήσετε, αν είσαστε τίμιοι, πώς αυτές οι ιδέες έχουν περισσότερους. Το ερώτημα του παιδιού μου τριβέλλιζε το μυαλό. Αλήθεια, μόνο εμείς οι χριστιανοί έχουμε μάρτυρες; Ρώτησα ένα σοφό άνθρωπο. Ρώτησα, ας πούμε έναν ειδικό που ξέρει να ξεχωρίζει το γνήσιο από την απομίμηση. - "Άκουσε, μου είπε. Ξέχασε ό νεαρός σου μια λεπτομέρεια. Μάρτυρες έχουν κι άλλοι. Οι μάρτυρες όμως της Εκκλησίας μας ήταν οι μόνοι πού πέθαναν συμφιλιωμένοι με το δήμιο τους. Οι δικοί μας μάρτυρες δεν πέθαναν με το μίσος στην καρδιά. Γαλάτεια Γρηγοριάδου -Σουρέλη
