Apolytikion of St. Nicholas, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. The Gospel of Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

5 Η παραβολή του Σπορέα Η Εκκλησία μας διδάσκει με τη θαυμάσια παραβολή του Σπορέα, πως ο Χριστός καλεί όλους τους ανθρώπους στη Βασιλεία του Θεού, στον Παράδεισο. Η σημερινή παραβολή μας παρουσιάζει: α) το λόγο του Θεού που σπείρεται στις καρδιές των ανθρώπων, β) τη θέση που παίρνουν απέναντι στο λόγο του Θεού οι άνθρωποι και γ) τη μοναδική και αλάνθαστη ερμηνεία της παραβολής απ ο τον ίδιο τον Κύριο.1. Ο Θεός είναι ο γεωργός και εμείς είμαστε το χωράφι Του. Ο καλός Σπορέας είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Ο σπόρος είναι ο λόγος του Θεού και το χώμα είναι η καρδιά του ανθρώπου. Ο Κύριος έσπειρε το θείο λόγο Του στις καρδιές των ανθρώπων και περιμένει να τον υποδεχτούν. Με τη σωστή καλλιέργεια η καρποφορία του θα είναι καταπληκτική. Οι διάφορες ομάδες των ανθρώπων είναι:2. 1η Ομάδα: Εδώ ανήκουν οι άνθρωποι εκείνοι που η καρδιά τους έχει γίνει τόσο σκληρή, όπως είναι ακριβώς το πατημένο χώμα. Ο σπόρος που έπεσε έμεινε στην επιφάνεια, γιατί ο άνθρωπος δε θέλησε να τον ακούσει προσεχτικά και σωστά. Αυτός ο άνθρωπος μένει συνήθως αδιάφορος για τη θρησκεία και το Ευαγγέλιο. Ονομάζει τον εαυτό του άθρησκο. έτσι ο λόγος του Θεού εξαφανίζεται, γιατί ο άνθρωπος δεν τον αφήνει να μπει στην καρδιά του.3. 2η Ομάδα: Εδώ ανήκουν οι άνθρωποι εκείνοι, που η καρδιά τους είναι γεμάτη πέτρες και αγκωνάρια. Είναι οι διάφορες αμαρτίες και αδυναμίες του ανθρώπου. Όταν ο άνθρωπος είναι ακόμη παιδί, ο λόγος του Θεού βρίσκει καλή υποδοχή. Η παιδική καρδιά είναι σ' αυτή την ηλικία μαλακή και εύπλαστη. Όσο μεγαλώνει όμως ο άνθρωπος και δε φροντίζει να διορθώνει τις ελ λείψεις και αδυναμίες του, τόσο η καρδιά του γίνεται σκληρή. Ο κίνδυνος αρχίζει να φαίνεται, όταν παραμελεί τον κυριακάτικο εκκλησιασμό, όταν δε συμμετέχει στην ιερή εξομολόγηση και στη θεία Κοινωνία. Ο λόγος του Θεού έχει αρχίσει να μαραίνεται, να ξεραίνεται, επειδή η καρδιά του ανθρώπου έχει γεμίσει όλο πέτρες (αμαρτίες, αδυναμίες, δικαιολογίες).4. 3η Ομάδα: Εδώ ανήκουν οι άνθρωποι εκείνοι, που έχουν γεμίσει την καρδιά τους μ' ένα σωρό αγωνίες, μέριμνες και υλικές φροντίδες. Είναι ο άνθρωπος που προσπαθεί να αποκτά στη ζωή του περισσότερα χρήματα, μεγαλύτερη δόξα και ισχυρή δύναμη. Αυτά τα αγκάθια, τα ζιζάνια και τα τριβόλια είναι η μεγαλύτερη παγίδα του σατανά, που προσπαθεί να μας απομακρύνει από το Θεό. Και στη μικρή ηλικία δε μας αφήνει να προσέξουμε, π.χ., στην εκκλησία το κήρυγμα του λόγου του Θεού. Εκείνη την ώρα μας βάζει να σκεφτόμαστε άλλα πράγματα. Ο νους μας τρέχει εδώ και εκεί. Αυτά τα αγκάθια πνίγουν τελικά την καρδιά του ανθρώπου και μαζί της και το λόγο του Θεού.5. 4η Ομάδα: Εδώ ανήκουν οι άνθρωποι εκείνοι, που έχουν καλή καρδιά. Αγαπούν το Θεό και τους άλλους ανθρώπους. Η αγάπη μεγαλώνει την καρδιά του ανθρώπου και έτσι ο λόγος του Θεού ριζοβολάει βαθιά. Φέρνει πολύ και σπουδαίο καρπό. Ο χριστιανός δείχνει αυτή την καρποφορία με τη δυνατή πίστη και τα εργα της άφθαστης αγάπης. εχει πια βρεθεί κοντά στο Θεό και απολαμβάνει την αγάπη Του και την αιώνια ζωή, που είναι ο Παράδεισος.ΔΙΔΑΓΜΑ:Ο σπόρος εστίν ο λόγος του Θεού» (Λουκά η' 11). Ε' ΚΕΙΜΕΝΑ ΕΚΚΛ. ΠΑΤΕΡΩΝ-«Λοιπόν όσοι έχουν σκληρό το νου τους, δεν αφήνουν να μπει μέσα τους ο θείος και ιερός λόγος του Θεού, ώστε να μπορούν να καρποφορήσουν με τα έργα της αρετής. Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι έχουν γίνει πατημένος δρόμος. Δεν μπορούν να θρέψουν τον εαυτό τους με τους καρπούς της αγιότητας, γιατί έχουν άγονη και σκληρή καρδιά» (Άγιος Κύριλλος, Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας). Prophet Hosea On October 18 the Church remembers the Prophet Hosea. He is one of the group sometimes called the Minor Prophets because their books are shorter (not less valuable) than those of Major Prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Hosea, like the slightly earlier prophet Amos, preached to the Northern Kingdom, Israel. But Amos was from the Southern Kingdom, Judah. Hosea was from the Northern Kingdom, and so he was preaching to his own people. His whole life, and the difficult spiritual effort God asked of him, was lived out in full sight of those people.in the second verse of Hosea's prophecy we read what that spiritual effort was to be. God commands Hosea to "Go, take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry, for the land commits great harlotry by forsaking the Lord." Hosea's marriage is to reflect the unfaithfulness of Israel toward God.The prophet obediently marries the prostitute Gomer, who then bears three children. Their very names are chilling indications of God's anger at faithless Israel: the Lord tells Hosea that the second child, a daughter, is to be called "Not to Be Pitied." About the third child, a son, God says, "Call his name Not my People, for you are not my people and I am not your God (1: 9).The people of Israel, like Gomer, have ignored, or perhaps refused to acknowledge, the goodness of their loving husband, who is God Himself. He says, "And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished upon her silver and gold which they used for Baal" (2: 8). He accuses the people of setting up kings and princes who were not godly, and of worshipping idols. He threatens that they "sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind" (8: 7).But that is not the end of the story. God tells Hosea to buy back his wife from the man who holds her as his lover. Hosea is to tell Gomer she must be faithful, and is to pledge his faithfulness to her. In the same way, though God will discipline the children of Israel, "they shall come in fear to the Lord and to His goodness in the latter days" (3: 5b).In one of today's readings Saint Paul warns the Ephesians against those who are "darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart; they have become callous and have given themselves up to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of uncleanness" (4: 18-19). He reminds them: "You did not so learn Christ!"If we have "learned Christ" as Paul wants us to, we, like Gomer, will realize that the best thing for us is to "return to my first husband, for it was better with me then than now" (Hosea 2: 7). God awaits that return; it is never His will that we should be so ignorant and hard of heart that we end up reaping the whirlwind.
