1 Ο ΟΡΘΡΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΠΑΣΧΑ THE MATINS OF PASCHA Μέχρι, ἀλλά μὴ συμπεριλαμβανομένου, τοῦ Εξαποστειλαρείου καὶ τῶν Αἴνων Up to, but not including, the Exapostilarion and the Praises

2 The Order of the Vigil and Matins of Pascha The Service begins as follows: Blessed is our God.* Trisagion. Lord have mercy. (12) Glory; Both now. O come, let us worship. Psalm 50. * Heavenly King is not said at the beginning of a Service until Matins of Monday of the Holy Spirit. Immediately, the Canon, He that once had hidden is chanted in the Plagal of Second Tone, Heirmologic, from Δι (G). Following the Ninth Ode of the Canon, He that once had hidden, the Choir straightway chants, softly and very reverently, the Resurrection Dismissal Hymn, When Thou didst descend unto death, in the Second Tone. All the lights in the Church are extinguished by the end of this hymn. The senior-ranking (High)Priest then emerges through the Beautiful Gates, carrying a lit candle, and chants, in the Plagal of First Tone: Come, receive ye light from the Unwaning Light, and glorify Christ, Who is arisen from the dead. The Choir then repeats the same hymn twice more, beginning in the language not chanted by the (High)Priest. After this has been chanted a total of three times, the Chanters chant the troparion, Angels in the heavens, O Christ our Saviour in both Greek and English, while the clergy and the faithful lead a great procession to the appointed place outside the narthex of the church. Note: All the text and music for the above portion of the Service through When Thou didst descend is contained in a separate Choir book. The music and text for the rest of this Service (from Come, receive ye light through the end of the Paschal Canon) is contained in this book. The (High)Priest then reads the Gospel according to St. Mark (16:1-8), in at least Greek and English, and, following the Choir responses, Glory to Thee, O Lord; glory to Thee, intones the exclamation: Glory to the holy and consubstantial and life-creating and indivisible Trinity, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Choir: Amen

3 And straightway, the clergy, faithful, and Choir chant in alternating languages the troparion, Christ is risen, in the Plagal of the First Tone. The troparion is chanted first three times without verses, and then once after each verse intoned by the (High)Priest, beginning with Let God arise through Both now and ever. Christ is risen is then chanted once more without a verse and with a final ending. Immediately, the Deacon intones the Litany, followed by the Choir responses, Lord have mercy in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone. After the traditional exclamations of Christ is risen! by the (High)Priest, and the response Truly He is risen! by the faithful, in various languages, the clergy and faithful process back into the Church while the Chanters and Choir begin the Paschal Canon, It is the day of Resurrection, alternating between Greek and English, and chanting the refrain, Glory to Thy holy Resurrection, O Lord before each troparion (not including the Heirmos). The Choir, chanting in English, alternates the Paschal Canon with the Chanters, who chant the Canon in Greek. All the responses of the small litanies are chanted by the Choir, as well as the Hypakoë of Pascha. The Chanters read the Greek Kontakion, Oikos, Synaxarion of the Menaion, and Synaxarion of Pascha. The Choir then reads the English Kontakion and Oikos and Synaxarion of Pascha, and then chants Let us who have beheld the Resurrection of Christ three times, alternating the languages. The Service continues with the chanting of the rest of the Canon as before until the Exapostilarion, which is chanted all three times by the Chanters. The Chanters continue, chanting the Praises, in the First Tone, and the first four troparia of the Resurrection in the First Tone from the Octoëchos. At this point, the Choir begins chanting the Stichera of Pascha, Let God arise A sacred Pascha in both languages, starting with the Greek. The Choir chants all the rest of Matins and the Divine Liturgy.

28 KONTAKION Though Thou didst descend into the grave, O Immortal One, yet didst Thou destroy the power of Hades, and didst arise as victor, O Christ God, calling to the myrrh-bearing women, Rejoice, and giving peace unto Thine Apostles, O Thou Who dost grant resurrection to the fallen. OIKOS The myrrh-bearing maidens anticipated the dawn, seeking, as it were day, the Sun Who was before the sun and Who had set in the tomb, and they cried out one to another: O friends, come, let us anoint with sweetsmelling spices the life-bringing and buried Body, even that Flesh which raiseth fallen Adam, who lieth in the grave. Let us go hence, let us make haste, like the Wise Men, and let us adore and offer before Him myrrh as it were a gift to Him, Who is no longer wrapped in swaddling bands, but in a winding sheet. And, let us make lamentation and cry aloud in exclamation: Arise, O Master, Thou Who dost grant resurrection to the fallen. The Synaxarion of the Menaion is now read, then the following: On this, the holy and great Sunday of Pascha, we celebrate the lifebringing Resurrection of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
