1 Sequenza C Traduzione dal testo originale-->greco Nikoletta Litsardaki 1 Η συσχέτιση ελεύθερου χρόνου και βιβλίου αποκλείει αναγκαστικά αυτή μεταξύ του χρόνου και του βιβλίου. Αναφέρομαι στην ανάγνωση εφημερίδων, και θα χαρακτήριζα την ανάγνωση αυτή προς αυτή. Εκτός από τις εύθυμες εξαιρέσεις, τα κείμενα διαβάζονται σαν να αρεσαν ή σαν να μην αρεσαν στο κοινό. Στο τέλος επιλέγεται ένα κείμενο που υποτίθεται θα αρέσει στους άλλους και όχι απαραίτητα σε αυτόν που το διαλέγει. Έτσι δημοσιεύονται κείμενα που αρέσουν στους εκδότες και προορίζονται για τις προτιμήσεις και τις αρεσκείες του ευρύ κοινού το οποίο όμως συχνά τις απορρίπτει. Εξ ου και η έκκληση (προειδοποίηση), μεταξύ εγκαρδιότητας και θυμού των ίδιων των εκδοτών, που μπροστά στην αποτυχία ενός βιβλίου, αναρωτούνται: " Μα σε ποιον άρεσε?» δεν θα ήθελα ούτε καν να επιμείνω στις περιπέτειες των επαγγελματιών αναγνωστών ζαλισμένων και έκπληκτων αλλά από την ανάγνωση αυτή καθ αυτή. Έχω ήδη αφιερώσει σ αυτούς (και σε μένα) μια ιστορία όπου ένας εκδοτικός σύμβουλος ψάχνοντας σε μια σωρεία ξεχασμένων χειρόγραφων και τυγχάνει να πέσει, χωρίς να την αναγνωρίσει, σε μια αδημοσίευτη μετάφραση του γνωστού Έγκλημα και Τιμωρία. Βρίσκει το κείμενο μετρίου ενδιαφέροντος, αλλά περιορίζεται στο να παρακολουθήσει τον συγγραφέα εν όψει περαιτέρω ωρίμανσης.η ιστορία έχει ερμηνευθεί σαν μια σάτιρα και πολύ πιθανότατα είναι. Αλλά δεν λείπει πιστεύω, από αυτόν που ανακαλύπτει την ποιότητα ενός μεγάλου συγγραφέα, μια αλληλεγγύη που όταν αναμιγνύεται με άλλους αντί να τον ενισχύσουν με την σεμνότητα τους καταλήγουν με την γκριζάδα τους να μετριάσουν το φως. Ο ελεύθερος χρόνος είναι αυτός που είναι αφιερωμένος στην πραγματική κι όχι στην υποθετική ανάγνωση. Μόνο ο χρόνος μας ανήκει - όπως γράφει κι ο Σένεκα στις Επιστολές του στον Λουκίλιο. Ο χρόνος που είναι διαβρωμένος από τις πολλαπλές καταλήψεις και από αυτό που ονομάζουμε με ατρόμητο ευφημισμό δεύτερη εργασία, ενώ είναι η τρίτη ή η τέταρτη. Ο χρόνος που μας αφαιρείται από τους κλέφτες του χρόνου, τους απεικονιζόμενους παρενοχλητές του Οράτιου στην ένατη σάτιρα. Και στου οποίους ο Kraus αποθεματίζει έναν έρημο αφορισμό: Πολλοί άνθρωποι θέλουν να με σκοτώσουν. Πολλοί άνθρωποι θέλουν να πιάσουν κουβέντα μαζί μου για καμιά ωρίτσα. Από τους πρώτους με υπερασπίζεται το δίκαιο". Ελεύθερος χρόνος για το βιβλίο, σημαίνει ελευθέρωση της ανάγνωσης από παραπλανητικές φιλοδοξίες. Η πρώτη προσδιορίζεται με την πνευματική "κατοχή" ενός κειμένου. Θα έπρεπε να χειραφετηθούν, λέω ιδανικά, από την επιθυμία του κτητισμού του βιβλίου. Με τον ίδιο τρόπο η ερωτική γλώσσα μας παραπλανεί όταν το ρήμα κατέχω ακολουθεί σαν άμεσο αντικείμενο, ένα άτομο. Τίποτα δεν είναι πιο φευγαλέο από αυτόν τον τρόπο του κτητισμού. Ωστόσο, το παρανοϊκό παραλήρημα της παντοδυναμίας μας καθιστά να επιλέγουμε μεταξύ των ρημάτων, το λιγότερο επαρκές. Καλύτερα να εκθέτετε τι μας προσφέρει ένα βιβλίο, τις μεταλλάξεις που μεταμορφώνουν το ίδιο και εμάς. Δεν πρέπει όμως να τρέφουμε αυταπάτες για το πως το διαμορφώνουν σε μια σύντομη αιωνιότητα, όπως στο χρηματοκιβώτιο μιας τράπεζας που έχει μετατραπεί σε κρύπτη. Μια άλλη παθολογική κληρονομιά, μεταδιδόμενη από το σχολείο, είναι η λατρεία της πληρότητας. Είναι το ιδανικό αδύνατο, που μας δίνει την πιο διαδεδομένη και αυστηρή αφορμή για να μην διαβάζουμε. Δεν μπορούμε να ξεχάσουμε εκείνο το χαρακτήρα του νεκροταφείου

Τα ιδανικά που σύμφωνα με τις γνώσεις μας προσανατολίζονται στο υπόγειο του νου και μας στερούν την αίσθηση της ελεύθερης κυκλοφορίας έχουν μια απόκρυφη σχέση με παρόμοια έργα. Ωστόσο, η έννοια ενός βιβλίου δεν είναι ποτέ αυτό που είναι, αλλά αυτό που είμαστε εμείς αφού το έχουμε διαβάσει. Το βιβλίο ζει διότι μας αλλάζει. Αυτό τείνουμε να το ξεχνάμε και πρώτος εγώ φυσικά. Ωστόσο, εξακολουθεί να είναι η θεμελιώδης έννοια. Η τρέλα (στα ελληνικά μανία) της πληρότητας επιδιώκει ένα εξωπραγματικό σύνολο για να μας αναστέλλει το μόνο ανοικτό χώρο σε εμάς, αυτό της μεροληψίας. Δεν έχω επισκεφτεί ακόμα μέρη της Ελλάδας περιμένοντας να διαβάσω βιβλία που τελικά δεν θα καταφέρω να διαβάσω ποτέ. Δεν θα επισκευτώ ποτέ εκείνα τα μέρη. Αλλά η μνήμη μιας άγνωστης κοιλάδας στην Κρήτη, που την διασχείζουν τα κοράκια,είναι πιο συναρπαστικό για μένα απ ότι τα ερείπια του ανακτόρου της Κνωσσού. Υπάρχουν πολλά βιβλία που αξίζει να διαβάσετε μέχρι το τέλος, κερδίζοντας τον ανταγωνισμό των άλλων και την εμμονή του χρόνου. Καλά, αυτά τα λίγα ας τα διαβάσουμε. Για τα άλλα ας αρκεστούμε σε αυτά που μπορούμε να αποτυπώσουμε, έτσι κι αλλιώς το κάνουμε ούτως ή άλλως. Αλλά ας είμαστε ειλικρινείς, χωρίς τύψεις και χωρίς αισθήματα ενοχής. Μπορούμε ίσως να πούμε ότι εμείς δεν γνωρίζουμε την Αθήνα μόνο και μόνο επειδή δεν την επισκεφτήκαμε; Ή ότι δεν γνωρίζουμε την Ρώμη μόνο και μόνο επειδή δεν έχουμε επισκεφθεί τα μουσεία της; Ένα τοπίο όπως φαίνεται από το παράθυρο ενός τραίνου μπορεί να αφήσει κάποιο ίχνος στην μνήμη μας, ενώ κάποιες ομαδικές τετριμμένες επισκέψεις μας θυμίζουν τους βαρετούς τουριστικούς συνοδούς. Αυτό που μετράει σε ένα βιβλίο είναι να γίνει μια εμπειρία, η καθ αυτού εμπειρία, και η εμπειρία δεν μετριέται ανάλογα με την ποσότητα, αλλά με το πόσο έντονη είναι. Η πληρότητα θυσιάζει το σύνολο του μέρους προς το ανεφάρμοστο του Ολοκλήρου (του όλου). Επιμένουμε στην ανάγνωση ορισμένων βιβλίων γιατί προσπαθούμε απελπισμένα να τα τελειώσουμε. Και όμως η μνήμη των βιβλιόφιλων είναι πλούσια σε σύντομες συναντήσεις και τυχαίες σχέσεις, πιο ζωντανές απο καλλιεργημένες σχέσεις γεμάτες ανία. Μαθαίνουν από διάφορες απόψεις, αποφασισμένες όπως τα συναισθήματα σε αυτή την ζωή που αποκαλούμε μυστηριωδώς λογικά. Οι εκτροπές της πληρότητας συμβάλλουν στην βίαια επιτακτική ανάγκη που θα ήθελα χαρακτηρίσω οικονομία της ανέχειας, τυπικό των περιόδων πολέμου: μην αφήνετε τίποτα στο πιάτο. Που θα ήταν σαν να επιβάλουμε σε κάποιον που τρώει να υποχωρήσει σε μια επιλογή γεύματος. Φαίνεται σαν η κατάποση πρέπει απαραίτητα να ολοκληρωθεί κι είναι απαραίτητη για να εκφραστεί μια κρίση, ενώ ξέρουμε ότι, για παράδειγμα, για το κρασί, μπορεί να αρκέσει μόνο μια γουλιά. Μια άλλη εικόνα της γραφειοκρατικής εξομολόγησης του βιβλίου είναι αυτή του "οργάνου της εργασίας". Αφήνω την φαντασία να αξιολογήσει πόσο ελκυστική είναι μια λέξη σαν εργαλείο. Και τη δημοτικότητα της λέξης εργασία, πολύ σημαντική στην Ιταλία ή οποία δεν έχει ανάγκη από επιλογές. Συνεχίστε με έρευνες, με την διεύσθηση με διάφορες συνιζήσεις, με αλληλουχίες και συμπεράσματα. Δεν εξαιρείται ακόμα και ο ελεύθερος χρόνος να σας αντιμετωπίσει με προσφυγή. Είμαι πεπεισμένος, χωρίς να είμαι συνεργάτης καμμίας έρεσης ή σέκτας, ότι και μόνο ή φυσική παρουσία των βιβλίων σε μια βιβλιοθήκη, πράτει (δρα) σε όσους είναι κάτοχοι τους. Η ανάγνωση είναι μια τέχνη που αποκτάται με τον ίδιο τρόπο όπως και η συγγραφή. Προσπαθώ να την διδάξω, αλλά σύμφωνα με την έννοια της γαλλικής apprendre που σημαίνει ταυτόχρονα μάθηση, είναι μια τέχνη που δεν τελειώνει ποτέ να μαθαίνει. Η αίσθησης της ανάγνωσης πρέπει να αντιλαμβάνεται σαν ευτυχία, όχι σαν ενσωμάτωση: να! η παιδική ηλικία που πρέπει να βρούμε όλοι μας σαν ενήλικες. Η αναζήτηση των βιβλίων πρέπει να πραγματοποιείται με ευχαρίστηση, όχι σαν αγγαρεία. Ευχαρίστηση ανεξάντλητη, άπληστη, λαθραία. Αγαπάτε την αδηφαγία, όχι την εγκράτεια. Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε μέχρι τέλους λίγα βιβλία μέσα στο χρόνο τα οποία δεν θα είναι πάντα και τα καλύτερα. Αγοράστε διάφορα βιβλία μαζικά και διαβάζετε τα ταυτόχρονα. Ανακαλύψτε την πολυγαμία. Βέβαια, η μονογαμία μας αφήνει ανείπωτες χαρές, αλλά ίσως για αυτό συνήθως δεν εξιστορούνται και προτιμουνται οι παραβάσεις. Μερικές φορές μια εφήμερη επαφή είναι πιο επιθυμητή της συνύπαρξης. Ένα βιβλίο μπορεί να σας προσφέρει το καλύτερο μόνο σε ορισμένα μέρη του. Προσπαθήστε να τα βρείτε και σταθείτε αυτά. Δεν θέλω να σας προτείνω την αστάθεια με αυτό, αλλά την κινητικότητα. Ελεύθερος χρόνος για το βιβλίο σημαίνει : ανάγνωση που αφαιρείται με κάθε σκοπό. Σημαίνει διαβάστε στο παρόν. Μιλώ για μια εμπειρία που μου είναι σχεδόν πάντα αποκλεισμένη. Για να την πλησιάσετε και να έρθετε πιο κοντά θα πρέπει να ξεχάσετε την επαγγελματική ανάγνωση και την βιβλιοφιλία. Πιστεύω ότι η βιβλιοφιλία περιέχεται σε ένα γονίδιο που μεταδίδει την λαχτάρα και την επιθυμία της γνώσης του αλφάβητου.

Αλλά εδώ έχουμε ένα σκοπό, αν και είναι ανεύθυνος, αυτός παραμένει στη θέση του. Η κόπωση του Mallarmé ο οποίος έχει διαβάσει πολλά βιβλία αλλά δεν έχει καταφέρει να τα τελειώσει όλα, έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα στον ίδιο τον βιβλιόφιλο την απελπισία. Όπως εξηγεί και ο Νίτσε, «εξ ου και το όνειρο του να ξυπνάει κανείς το πρωί και να ανακαλύπτει την ευτυχία περπατώντας κι αφήνοντας πίσω τα βιβλία. Να μην διαβάζουμε για.. (για να μάθουμε περισσότερα, για διασκέδαση, για συγγραφή, για να σκεφτόμαστε, για να μιλάμε, για να ξεφύγουμε, για να θυμόμαστε). Στον σύγχρονο τεχνικό πολιτισμό- έγραψε ο Heschel - καταναλώνουμε τον χρόνο για να αποκτήσουμε χώρο. Αλλά ο χρόνος - πρόσθεσε - είναι η καρδιά της ύπαρξης. Νομίζω ότι αυτό ήταν το νόημα της φράσης που απεύθεινε ο Διογένης στον Αλέξανδρο οταν στάθηκε μπροστά του : "Μετακινήσου, μου κρύβεις τον ήλιο". Φράση που ερμηνεύτηκε ως επιθυμία να οριοθετηθεί η δόξα του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου. Αμφιβάλλω όμως ότι Διογένης, συκρίνωντάς τον με τον ήλιο, ότι ήθελε να τον μειώσει. Το αντίθετο μάλιστα. Η έμφαση χτυπά την ολοκληρωτική και αιώνια έννοια του παρόντος. Η μορφή του Αλέξανδρου συσκοτίζει τον ήλιο και απομακρύνει από τον Διογένη το φως. Διαβάζοντας στο παρόν, συμμετάσχουμε σε όσα συμβαίνουν. Διαβάζοντας σαν να αφουγκραζόμαστε την εσωτερικότητα, σαν να διαλογούμε με τον συγγραφέα αλλά και με τον εαυτό μας. Ένα μεγάλος συλλέκτης έργων τέχνης μου είχε πει ότι η μεγαλύτερη ευχαρίστηση του ήταν ναι μεν να κατέχει αυτά τα έργα αλλά η μεγαλύτερη ικανοποίηση του ήτανότι θα μπορούσε να τα μελετήσει με την ησυχία του όποτε ήθελε. Δεν είχε άλλο σκοπό. Όπως ο μοναχός που προσεύχεται όχι για να αποκτήσει ή να ζητήσει αλλά για να ευχαριστήσει που προσεύχεται. Διαβάζοντας στο παρόν θα ανακάλυπτε την πιο σημαντική αίσθηση του χρόνου και της ανάγνωσης. Χρησιμοποιώ την υποθετική γιατι είναι δύσκολος προορισμός. Ομως άρχισα να την παρακολουθώ. Ίσως, όταν γίνω διακόσιασαράνταδυο χρονών, την φτάσω. Σημειώνω δε, ότι διαβάζοντας στο παρόν, βλέπω επιτέλους την σύγκλιση μεταξύ ευτυχίας και in Greco di Nikoletta Litsardaki

I have already dedicated a story to them (and me), in which a publishing advisor looking among a lot of forgotten writings he comes across, without recognizing it, to an unpublished translation of the famous Crime and Punishment. He thinks of the text as of mediocre interest and he just decides to follow the writer in case he matures more. This story has been interpreted as a joke and most probably it is. I believe though that a person that discovers the quality of an important writer feels a fellowship towards others, who instead of enhancing him with their modesty, they end up moderating the light due to their grayness. Free time is the one which is dedicated to the real and not hypothetical reading. We own only time as Seneca states in his Letters to Lucilious. Time, which is corroded by numerous conquests and by what we call second job, where it is third or forth. Time which is taken from us by the time thieves, the depicted disturbers from Horace in the 9 th Satire.To which Kraus dedicated a aphorism: Many people want to kill me. Many people want to have a chat with me for like an hour. From the first ones I am protected by law. Free time for the book means liberating reading from misleading ambitions. The first one is defined by the legal occupation (copyright) of the text. They should be emancipated, I think ideally, from the desire to own a Sequenza C - Greco-->Inglese1 - Katerina Karvounari book. However, the meaning of a book is never what it is, but what we are after we have read it. The book is alive because it changes us. This is what we tend to forget and first of all I tend to forget. However, it still is the fundamental meaning. The mania of completeness aims at an unrealistic whole in order to suspend the only open space to us, this of partiality. I haven t still visited places in Greece, waiting to read books, which in the end I will never manage to read. I will never visit these places. But the memory of an unknown valley in Crete, which is crossed by ravens is more exciting for me that the ruins of Knossos palace. 1

6 There are many books which worth reading till the end, winning the competition and the persistence of time. Ok, these few we can read them. For the rest, let s be happy with what we can remember. We do it anyway. But let s be honest, without remorse and feeling guilty. Can we say that we don t know Athens just because we haven t visited it? Or that we don t know Rome just because we haven t visited the museums? A scenery, as we see it though a train s window, could leave a trace at our memory, where some group common visits reminds us of boring touristic guides. What is important in a book is to become an experience and experience is not measured according to quantity, but according to how intense it was. The completeness sacrifices the whole of a part towards the inapplicable Whole. We insist on reading some books just because we try desperately to finish them. Indeed, the memory of book lovers is rich in brief meetings and random relationships, and more alive than deep relationships full of boredom. They learn from several opinions, decided by feelings in this life which we call mysteriously sensible. The diversions of the completeness contribute to the violent imperative need, which I would like to describe as economy of poverty, typical for a war period: don t let anything on the plate. It would be like forcing someone who eats to retreat in the choice of a meal. It looks like the swallowing must be necessarily completed and it is necessary in order to express a crisis, while we know that, for example, when it comes to wine, only a ship can be enough. Additionally, you shouldn t read books just to judge them but to enjoy them. Longanesi used to simulate the literature critics when they criticized a text with the policemen when they interrogate a suspect. Along with the worship of completeness is the worship of Introduction. School has made us to postpone the reading of a brilliant book for another one more mediocre. The result is to stop reading the first one and never start the second. Boredom makes us many times to change route. Reading is an art which is acquired with the same way as writing. I am trying to teach it, but according to the French meaning apprendre, which means at the same time learning, it is an art which never stops to learn. The feeling of reading must be conceived as happiness, not as incorporation: there! Childhood that all as adults must find. The search for books must be done with pleasure and not as an obligation. Inexhaustible, greedy, stealth pleasure. Love voracity, not temperance. You can read till the end few books within time, which won t always be the best. Buy book massively and read simultaneously. Discover polygamy. Of course, monogamy leaves us with unspeakable joy, but maybe therefore most of the times it is not told and violations are preferred. 8 Sequenza C - Inglese1-->Italiano - Massimo Malizia&Cinzia Agostinetto&Debora Serrentino 1 La relazione tra tempo libero e un libro impedisce inevitabilmente il collegamento tra il tempo e questo libro. Mi sto riferendo alla lettura dei giornali e vorrei proprio descrivere la lettura in sé. A parte qualche felice eccezione, si leggono i testi valutando se possano piacere o meno al pubblico. Di conseguenza si sceglie il testo pensando ai gusti del lettore e non è detto che corrispondano necessariamente a quelli di chi aveva scelto quel dato testo per la pubblicazione. Così si pubblicano i testi che erano piaciuti agli editori ritenendo che siano nelle corde del grande pubblico, che invece molto spesso li ignora. Alla fine gli editori stessi, meravigliandosi di fronte all'insuccesso di un libro, si chiedono un po' spietatamente e un po' con irritazione ma a chi era piaciuto? Non voglio nemmeno menzionare a quello che pensano i lettori abituali, che leggono tali libri con una sensazione di stordimento e sorpresa. Ho già dedicato a loro (e a me) una storia, in cui un consulente editoriale, cercando in mezzo ad una serie di manoscritti dimenticati, trova per caso, senza riconoscerlo, una traduzione non pubblicata del famoso romanzo Delitto e Castigo. Ritiene che il testo sia di modesto interesse ma decide di tenere d occhio lo scrittore in caso egli cresca stilisticamente. Questa storia è stata vista come una barzelletta e molto probabilmente lo è. Credo tuttavia che quando qualcuno scopre le qualità di uno scrittore importante comincia a sentire simpatia nei confronti di altri scrittori, ma la loro pochezza non aumenta il valore dello scrittore dotato, il cui splendore, anzi, ne esce attenuato dal loro grigiore. Il tempo libero è quello dedicato alla lettura effettiva e non ipotetica. Possediamo solo il tempo come afferma Seneca nelle sue lettere a Lucilio. Il tempo, che è corroso da molteplici conquiste e da quello che chiamiamo secondo lavoro, se non anche terzo o quarto. Il tempo che ci è sottratto dai ladri del tempo, descritti da Orazio nella nona satira. Il tempo, al quale Kraus dedicò un aforisma: Molte persone vorrebbero uccidermi e molte altre vorrebbero conversare con me per un ora. Dalle prime mi protegge la legge. Avere tempo libero per un libro significa liberare la lettura da ambizioni ingannevoli. Una, ad esempio, è definita dall occupazione legale (il diritto d autore) del testo. Le persone si dovrebbero emancipare, idealmente, dal desiderio di possedere un libro. Egualmente il linguaggio d amore ci illude quando il verbo occupare si riferisce, come a un oggetto, a una persona. Nulla è più effimero di questo possedere. Eppure il nostro insano delirio di onnipotenza ci impone di scegliere, tra i verbi, il meno appropriato. Sarebbe meglio parlare di quello che un libro ci offre, i cambiamenti sia di noi stessi che del libro. Non ci dovremmo fare illusioni per come si trasforma in una breve eternità, come la cassaforte di una banca che si trasforma in una cripta. Un altra eredità patologica, che è trasmessa a scuola, è l adorazione della completezza. E l ideale dell impossibile che ci da la più perfetta e comune scusa per non leggere. Non si può dimenticare quel personaggio, dal Cimitero di Lee Masters, che disse di non aver mai preso una decisione così importante come quando, da ragazzo, decise di leggere l intera Enciclopedia Britannica. Le aspirazioni, che in base alle nostre conoscenze portano al profondo della nostra mente e ci impediscono di possedere il senso della libera circolazione, hanno una correlazione segreta a simili lavori. In ogni caso il significato di un libro non è mai in quello che è, ma in quello che siamo noi dopo averlo letto.il libro è vivo perché ci cambia. Questo è quello che tendiamo a dimenticare; io per primo. Ne rappresenta però il significato più importante. La mania di completezza mira ad un intero irrealistico che interrompe la comunicazione con l unico spazio aperto, che è quello della nostra parzialità.

9 Sequenza C - Inglese1-->Italiano - Massimo Malizia&Cinzia Agostinetto&Debora Serrentino Per esempio io non ho ancora visitato alcuni posti in Grecia perché prima vorrei leggere dei libri al riguardo, libri che alla fine non riuscirò mai a leggere come del resto non visiterò mai quei posti in Grecia. Ma la memoria di una valle sconosciuta a Creta, sulla quale volano incrociandosi i corvi, è molto più affascinante per me delle rovine del palazzo di Cnosso. Ci sono dei libri che vale la pena leggere fino alla fine, vincendo una gara ostinata contro il tempo: va bene, questi (pochi) libri li possiamo leggere fino all ultima riga. Per il resto, cerchiamo di farci bastare quello che riusciamo a ricordare: vi assicuro che è sufficiente. Ma suvvia siamo onesti, lasciando perdere rimorsi e sensi di colpa: possiamo dire di non conoscere Atene solo perché non l abbiamo visitata? O che non conosciamo Roma perché non abbiamo visto tutti i suoi musei? Un paesaggio, visto attraverso il finestrino di un treno, potrebbe lasciare una traccia nella nostra memoria, come invece non succede con le solite visite in comitiva che al massimo risvegliano in noi il ricordo di guide turistiche noiose. L'importanza di un libro si determina dalle sensazioni che ci stimola, sensazioni che non sono misurate quantitativamente, ma in base all'intensità. Invece la completezza sacrifica l'interezza di una parte per ottenere un Intero inattuabile. Infatti l'unico motivo che ci spinge di solito a leggere certi libri è quello di voler disperatamente arrivare all'ultima pagina. La memoria degli amanti dei libri si è arricchita di brevi incontri e relazioni casuali ed è molto più viva di quella che si è soffermata in una relazione stabile e profonda, ma piena di noia. Essi dunque imparano leggendo opinioni diverse, da cui ricavano delle impressioni che sono ritenute misteriosamente di buon senso dal comune sentire. Le storture derivanti dalla necessità di completezza partecipano a quel bisogno imperativo presente in un' economia povera tipica di un periodo di guerra: non lasciare niente nel piatto. Sarebbe come costringere chi si accinge a mangiare a rinunciare alla scelta di cosa mangiare. Come se dovessimo ingoiare necessariamente tutto il cibo per far vedere che abbiamo fame e che ci stiamo sfamando, mentre sappiamo benissimo che, per esempio, per il vino, può essere sufficiente un sorso. Inoltre, non si dovrebbero leggere libri solo per esprimerne un giudizio, ma per trarne godimento. Longanesi era solito paragonare i critici letterari che recensivano un testo ai poliziotti che torchiano un sospettato. Va di pari passo con la venerazione della completezza anche quella per l' introduzione. La scuola ha fatto in modo che noi posponessimo la lettura di un libro brillante per uno più mediocre. Il risultato è smettere di leggere il primo per non iniziare mai il secondo. La noia ci costringe a cambiare strada molte volte. Groucho Marx chiese ad un autista di studiare l'ulisse di Joyce. Più avanti, nel libro di Gilbert, l'autista si interrogava chiedendosi del perché le note richiedevano più spiegazioni del testo in sé. Un altro tassello in questa disamina burocratica del libro è quello di essere uno strumento a servizio dei compiti per casa. Lascio alla vostra immaginazione l impegno di valutare il fascino delle parole strumento e compiti per casa, quest ultimi di importanza capitale in Italia, e che si è costretti ad eseguire, senza alternative. D'altra parte la pubblicità che promuove i libri, la prima a dubitare del valore di quello che deve offrire, non fa che ripetere ossessivamente l'ovvio. A questo punto è meglio definire il libro come strumento, termine che un tempo veniva dato anche al seno in quanto fonte di nutrimento e piacere, perché alla fine quello che i libri offrono sembra essere sempre la stessa cosa. Esistono delle strategie professionali per leggere libri. Tutti lo sappiamo, altrimenti non avremmo mai letto tutti i libri che abbiamo letto. Procedi con le ricerche, con... lungo numerose scorciatoie, trovando sequenze e conclusioni. Il tempo libero a nostra disposizione non ci esime dal confrontarci con espedienti. Sono convinto, senza scadere nel fanatismo di culto o di setta, che la sola presenza dei libri in una libreria produce effetti benefici sui padroni di casa. 2

Sto cercando di insegnarlo, ma così come dice la parola francese apprendre, che significa contemporaneamente imparare ed insegnare, è un arte che non si finisce mai di apprendere. Il sentimento della lettura deve essere collegato alla gioia, non all imposizione: è quell infanzia che ogni adulto dovrebbe ritrovare. La ricerca dei libri deve essere vissuta come un piacere non come un obbligo. Un piacere inesauribile, avido, segreto. La voracità della passione, non la temperanza. Nel tempo è possibile leggere, fino alla fine, alcuni libri che non sempre saranno i migliori. Comprate libri in massa e leggeteli contemporaneamente. Scoprite la poligamia. Certo la monogamia ci lascia una gioia indicibile, ma il più delle volte le trasgressioni sono meglio. Talvolta un contatto fugace è preferibile alla convivenza. Un libro può offrire il meglio in alcune delle sue parti. Cercate di trovarle e soffermatevi su queste. Con questo non voglio suggerire instabilità, ma mobilità. Tempo libero per un libro significa: leggere sottraendosi a qualsiasi motivazione. Significa leggere il presente. Sto parlando di un esperienza che è spesso preclusa. Per raggiungerla e avvicinarla devi dimenticare la lettura professionale e la bibliofilia. Credo che la bibliofilia sia inclusa in un gene che trasmette la brama e il desiderio di conoscere l alfabeto. In occasioni più serie, e questa è una di quelle, è la sensualità che risucchia l universo attraverso i libri. Ma qui abbiamo una causa, che benché non sia responsabile, la sostituisce. Il male di vivere di Mallarmé, che ha letto molti libri ma non ne ha terminato alcuno, ha come risultato la stessa bibliofilia di essere disperato. Come ha spiegato Nietzsche: il sogno di qualcuno di svegliarsi una mattina e scoprire la felicità camminando e lasciandosi dietro i libri. Non leggere per uno scopo imparerai, ti divertirai, scriverai, penserai, parlerai, evaderai, ricorderai di più. Nella civiltà tecnica contemporanea ha scritto Heschel consumiamo il tempo per ottenere spazio. Ma il tempo aggiunge è il cuore dell esistenza. Credo che questo sia il significato della frase che Diogene disse ad Alessandro che stava di fronte a lui: Spostati, che mi fai ombra. Una frase che è stata interpretata come il desiderio di delimitare la gloria di Alessandro il Grande. Tuttavia dubito che Diogene lo stesse paragonando al sole, lo voleva svilire. Il contrario. L enfasi colpisce il completo ed eterno significato del presente. La figura di Alessandro che nasconde il sole e copre la luce a Diogene. Leggendo il presente noi prendiamo parte a tutto quello che accade. Leggere è come provare l interiorità, come discutere con lo scrittore ma anche con noi stessi. Un grande collezionista d arte mi ha raccontato che il suo più grande piacere era ovviamente possedere tutte quelle opere d arte, ma che la sua più grande soddisfazione era poterle studiare in pace ogni volta che desiderava farlo. Non aveva alcun altro scopo. Come il monaco che non prega per ottenere o domandare, ma perché è grato di pregare. Leggendo nel presente avrebbe scoperto la percezione più importante del tempo e della lettura. Sto utilizzando una frase ipotetica perché è una destinazione difficile. Ma ho iniziato osservandola. Forse quando avrò 242 anni la raggiungerò.
